2025 Helsinki Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)

🗓️September 19, 2025 - September 29, 2025 I traveled to six cities in four countries over 11 days and nine nights! Since I was only planning to stay at a hotel this time, I narrowed down my search based on convenient location, affordability, and bathroom facilities (cleanliness, water-resistant floors, etc.). Single beds in Scandinavia are all narrow. lol All my reservations were room-only. (The hotel in Stockholm included free breakfast.) 🏨 Scandic Helsinki Aviacongress 📍Vantaa, Finland🇫🇮 (Around Helsinki Airport) Since my first day's plan was to arrive in Helsinki and visit the sauna I had reserved, and I was leaving for Copenhagen early the next morning, I found a hotel near the airport and stayed here. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, running from early in the morning. Although it's far from downtown Helsinki, there's a bus stop near the hotel, which I used to get to the city. The room was clean and spacious. The price was reasonable, so I recommend it to anyone with a similar schedule. 🏨 Copenhagen Island Hotel 📍Copenhagen, Denmark🇩🇰 Hotel prices in Copenhagen were generally higher than in other cities, perhaps because it was a Saturday or perhaps just because. I planned to take the bus to Stockholm the next day, so I chose this hotel, which was nearby the bus terminal and reasonably priced. The hotel was close to the station and bus stop, and it was only one stop to Central Station, so travel was easy. I only passed through it on my way to the station because I didn't have much time, but there's a shopping mall next to the hotel. The room was clean and tidy. 🏨 Queen's Hotel by First Hotels 📍Stockholm, Sweden🇸🇪 I searched for a budget hotel close to Stockholm Central Station. I was a little worried because it seemed a bit far to walk from the station and the hotel seemed a little old, but I booked it anyway, thinking it would be fine since I was only staying there for one night. As it turned out, it was perfectly within walking distance even with a carry-on bag, and the roads weren't too bumpy, so I got around without any issues. The room was simple but clean, with plenty of space to spread out my luggage. The elevator was an old-fashioned manual elevator, which added to the European feel. I also appreciated the free breakfast included. 🏨 Ivalo River Camping 📍Ivalo, Finland🇫🇮 During my three-day aurora viewing trip, I wanted to stay at an aurora hut on the last day, so I wanted to keep costs as low as possible for the first two nights. I chose this hotel because it had good reviews. I'd never stayed in a cottage before, and I was a little worried about what the shared facilities would be like, since the toilets and showers were outside the cottage. However, they were very well maintained and I had no problems using them. As noted on the reservation page, bed linens and towels are charged separately from the accommodation fee, so be aware of that. (€12/person - pricey!) There's also a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, so I was able to do my laundry. (€15/3 hours - I brought my own, so I didn't use it, but detergent and other items were available.) Unfortunately, the weather was bad the night I stayed, and I couldn't see the aurora, but there was a river across the road in front, and I was able to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset. 🏨 Holiday Village Inari 📍Inari, Finland🇫🇮 I booked this Aurora Hut, which I'd always wanted to stay at. The rooms face Lake Inari, are spacious, and have a luxurious atmosphere. There are also supermarkets and souvenir shops nearby. The room was fully stocked with cutlery and other amenities, which was convenient when eating food from the supermarket. I needed to call the staff to confirm something about a tour I'd booked personally, and they were very accommodating. Our aurora tour the day before was canceled and we had to reschedule our stay here, so we didn't have much time to relax in our room. However, when we returned from the aurora tour, the aurora was in full bloom, and we were able to see it from our room. It was truly a dreamlike experience! 🥹🤍 🏨 Scandic Simonkenttä 📍Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 It's located right behind Kamppi Chapel. It's directly connected to Kamppi Station, but you can also walk to Helsinki Central Station. The tram stops right in front of the hotel, so it was convenient for getting to the ferry terminal in one go when going to Tallinn. Kamppi Station is home to Kamppi Center, a large shopping mall with a Marimekko store and a supermarket. The supermarket was open fairly late, which was helpful since I was short on time. There is also a 24-hour supermarket closer to the central station. The hotel is in a great location, making it easy to get to anywhere, so I highly recommend it for sightseeing in Helsinki. Here is my guide for one day in Helsinki! Trust me, it does not have to be too expensive. Start off your day at Senate Square (Senaatintori). This spot is very central in Helsinki and has beautiful architecture! Take some time to take it all in. Then, move up the stairs and step inside the iconic Helsinki Cathedral – it has a minimalistic, Scandinavian design and I loved it. Snap some pics; this place is aesthetic. Next, stroll over to the Uspenski Cathedral, the Russian church with all the dramatic domes. The architecture really stands out from the rest of the city. Worth a visit! Walk along the outdoor saunas (because, hello, Helsinki essentials) toward Vanha Kauppahalli (Old Market Hall). Grab a great coffee from Restaurant Story and get it to go. Step outside and enjoy the views by the water – the perfect spot to recharge and people-watch. Once you're caffeinated, head to Esplanade Park, the green heart where locals hang out in style! I went to a restaurant called "maritori" in Helsinki, Finland! It's a staff cafeteria and cafe located inside the Marimekko headquarters building. The interior and space are so lovely that it's hard to believe it's a staff cafeteria, and we had a stylish lunch there!! Even non-staff members are welcome to enter during opening hours! Everything except the main course is buffet-style, and you can have seconds, but the main course was quite filling!! I planned this because Finland was the first country I represented in Model United Nations in high school, so I had to check it out. I flew from New York for 7.5 hours and arrived at 2:00 PM. Immigration was super smooth. Border control asked a few questions about where I was going and how long I would stay, and then let me through. They didn't check any documents at all, and it wasn't as strict as the internet said. I took the P train to Central Station in half an hour. I bought a 4.20 euro A/B zone ticket, valid for 90 minutes. You can buy it on the HSL app or on the train. I rode it three times without encountering a ticket inspector. 🚄 I entered the city at 3:00 PM and started walking the city. It was incredibly hot. I first visited the Sibelius Monument. It's so remote, I felt like I'd just been there. Back in the city center, I checked the White Church and the Red Church. At 5:15 PM, I sat on the beach. I had booked a 6:30 PM boat tour, but since there wasn't much to see, I decided to eat at the nearby Finlanda Caviar Oyster House. They have a 34 Euro tasting menu featuring all French oysters, including a 6 Euro Girardot No. 3. Sure enough, there are more European oysters than American ones! You can even pay with WeChat! After eating, I went on a boat across the street. I realized that Helsinki still looks better from the sea, but it's not so good in the summer because the White Church is under renovation and you can't see the whole thing. 😭 The second time I went was during a layover, specifically for the Vietnamese pho I missed last time. The broth was amazing! We also went to the Central Market, but both times I felt the same—Helsinki is just too "rustic." It was my least favorite city on this trip, and I probably won't be back.

Helsinki Ode Central Library has three floors: The first floor is mainly for exhibitions and rest, and there is also a cinema and a cafe. The second floor is mainly for the office and research space of the staff of the Central Library, and the multimedia room, meeting room and Living Lab are planned. The third floor is the main reading space. I chose to go Finland during Autumn time,because i want to walk more and don't want to walk under sunny day. What you can do in Helsinki, if you only have one day ? Take a bus to city from airport is easy.Route: Bus line 600 operates between the airport and Helsinki city center. You can take train as well, but nothing much to see from train. Travel time: The bus ride takes about 40-50 minutes. Train is about 35 minutes. Please join the free walking tour,just gave the tips at the end of the trip. The experience starts in the heart of the city, where the guide (i had Lara, who was warm and really funny!) leads you through some of Helsinki’s most iconic sights, from the neoclassical splendor of Senate Square to the colorful charm of Katajanokka’s Art Nouveau buildings. But the real treat is what you’ll taste along the way. Inside the historic Old Market Hall, we got to sample smoked reindeer and bear, traditional rye bread, salty-sweet caviar, and even some local chocolate. What i loved most was how our guide tied each flavor to a piece of Finnish culture or history. From learning why rye bread is such a staple to discovering the story behind Finland’s obsession with all things sweet and salty, we learned something new with every dish. This is a walking tour with a relaxed pace and plenty of opportunities to sit or linger. It’s a great intro to Helsinki, especially for first-timers or anyone curious about the local food scene. After the walking tour i went to Temppeliaukio Church, Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki Cathedral, and Sibelius Park. I visited 'St. George Bakery,' a bakery located in Helsinki, Finland. This bakery also serves as the breakfast restaurant for the St. George Hotel. ✔︎ Cinnamon Roll ✔︎ Cardamom Roll I ordered these two items. The bread had a delightful aroma of cinnamon and cardamom even before eating, which made me feel so happy. The crispy texture of the dough was absolutely delicious! Although I opted for takeout this time, the interior of the shop had a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, with beautiful decor.
