Some places enter your heart only after you have seen them. Others begin to feel familiar long before you ever arrive. For me, that place is the Dome of the Rock, glowing above the heart of Al-Quds, Jerusalem’s Old City. One day, Insha’Allah, I hope to see it with my own eyes, not through a photograph or a screen. I hope to stand on that ancient ground and quietly take in a place my heart has travelled to many times before my feet ever could. The Golden Dome Many People Misunderstand Before dreaming about that moment, there is one detail worth clearing up. Many people see the famous golden dome in photographs and assume it is the main congregational prayer hall of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The golden, octagonal building is actually Qubbat al-Sakhra, better known as the Dome of the Rock. The long building with the dark grey dome, standing to its south, is Al-Qibli Mosque. This is the principal prayer hall where the imam leads daily congregational prayers, Jummah prayers and Tarawih during Ramadan. That does not mean the Dome of the Rock is separate from Al-Aqsa. Both buildings stand within the wider Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as Al-Haram al-Sharif. In Muslim usage, Al-Aqsa often refers to this entire sacred precinct rather than only one building inside it. Once you know the difference, photographs of the compound become much easier to understand. The golden dome belongs to the Dome of the Rock. The dark grey dome marks Al-Qibli Mosque. Both are part of Al-Aqsa. Dome of the Rock at a Glance 📍 Location: At the centre of the Al-Aqsa compound in Al-Quds, Jerusalem’s Old City 🕌 Arabic name: Qubbat al-Sakhra 📅 Completed: Around 691 to 692 CE 🏛️ Design: An octagonal Islamic shrine ✨ The dome: Covered with gold-plated copper panels, not made from solid gold 🏅 Heritage: The Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site A Meaning Deeper Than Gold I do not dream of seeing the Dome of the Rock simply because its golden roof looks beautiful in the sunlight. What draws me closer is the sacred rock at its centre, the faith connected to it and the layers of history gathered around it. Surah Al-Isra in the Qur’an tells of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ Night Journey from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa. Islamic tradition connects Al-Aqsa deeply with Isra and Mi’raj, and associates the rock enclosed by the Dome of the Rock with the Prophet’s ﷺ ascension to the heavens. The golden-domed structure standing today was built decades after the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime. The Qur’an refers to Masjid al-Aqsa, not directly to this later building. The Dome of the Rock was constructed afterwards around the sacred rock and became one of the defining monuments of early Islamic architecture. Al-Aqsa was also the first qibla for Muslims and is regarded as Islam’s third-holiest sanctuary after Makkah and Madinah. The more I learn about it, the less the Dome of the Rock feels like somewhere I want to visit merely for a beautiful photograph. More Than 1,300 Years Above Al-Quds The Dome of the Rock was built between 688 and 692 CE under the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik. It is one of the earliest and most important surviving monuments of Islamic architecture. It has not watched over Al-Quds only during peaceful years. It has lived through changing dynasties, conflict, earthquakes, restorations and the rise and fall of rulers. During the Crusader period, it was used as a church. After Salah al-Din, commonly known in the West as Saladin, recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, the building was returned to Islamic use. Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman rulers all left their mark through later restorations. Much of the blue glazed tilework seen on the exterior today is connected to renovations ordered by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The dome itself has also been restored several times and is now covered with gold-plated copper panels. Reading those dates in a history book is one thing. Standing before a building that has carried all those centuries is something else entirely. If I am blessed to reach it, I know I will not be looking only at the gold. I will be thinking about everything it has survived. What I Hope to Notice Up Close The golden dome captures your attention from a distance, but it is the smaller details I want to see slowly. I want to notice the balance of its eight-sided form, the blue and turquoise tiles, the floral and geometric patterns, the Arabic calligraphy and the mosaics glowing inside. I do not want to arrive, take one photograph and hurry away. I want to walk into the courtyard quietly, listen to the sounds around me and give the place time to settle in my heart. If I am blessed with the chance to pray there, I want to lower my head not merely as a traveller passing through, but as a Muslim standing in one of the places he has long prayed to see. What to Know Before Visiting The Dome of the Rock is more sensitive than an ordinary tourist attraction. Access and visiting conditions can change at short notice because of prayer times, religious occasions and the security situation. Before travelling, check the latest official travel advice and confirm on-site arrangements with local Waqf staff or a trusted local guide. 📍 Getting there: The Dome of the Rock stands inside the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem’s Old City. One natural approach is to enter through Damascus Gate, walk through the Muslim Quarter and continue towards the compound. The gate available to you can depend on the rules in place that day, and the Old City’s narrow lanes can be confusing, so allow extra time. ⏰ When to go: Early morning is usually more comfortable, with softer light and less heat. Always check prayer times and access conditions first. Fridays and major religious occasions can be especially busy. 🪪 Carry identification: Keep your passport or relevant ID within easy reach and allow time for security checks. Muslim visitors may sometimes be asked questions or requested to confirm their faith, so remain calm and follow the instructions given at the entrance. 👕 Dress respectfully: Wear clean, modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. This is an active place of worship, not simply an Instagram photo stop. 📷 Photograph with care: Photography may be permitted around parts of the courtyard, but never take close photographs of people praying without their permission. Respect restricted areas, prayer times and every instruction from the staff. 🕌 Do not assume interior access: Entry inside the Dome of the Rock is generally reserved for Muslims, but even then it is not guaranteed. Access depends on current conditions and the decision of those responsible on the day. If you cannot enter, seeing it respectfully from within the Al-Aqsa grounds can still be a deeply meaningful experience. I would allow at least one and a half to two hours to explore the compound without rushing. Leave some flexibility in your schedule too, as security checks or an unexpected closure may change your plans. A Prayer That Feels Bigger Than a Journey For me, the Dome of the Rock is not another box waiting to be ticked on a bucket list. I do not want to return with only a beautiful image on my camera. I want to reach a place where faith, history and hope have stood together for centuries. If I am allowed into that courtyard one day, the first thing I want to do is not take a photograph. I want to pause on the stone pavement, look up at the golden dome and quietly say, “Alhamdulillah, I finally made it.” One day, Insha’Allah, the golden dome I have seen so many times in photographs will finally be standing before my own eyes. Until that day comes, I will keep praying for peace in Al-Quds and for everyone who longs to visit and worship there to reach it safely. #domeoftherock #qubbatalsakhra #aiaqsamosque #aiquds #jerusalem #palestinetravel #islamicheritage #muslimtravel #sacredjourney #historicalplaces #unescoworldheritage #middleeasttravel #travelinspiration #bucketlisttravel #tripmoments

The narrow streets of Old Jerusalem led me to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was unusual to see its gates without the usual throng of pilgrims—only the occasional shadow gliding across the ancient stones. Entering, I froze: silence, broken only by the whisper of my own footsteps, enveloped the vaults. It seemed as if time itself had slowed. The Edicule, usually surrounded by a line, waited alone. My heart beat faster as I crossed the low threshold. Lamps burned inside, casting flickering reflections on the yellowish marble slab—the very one that preserves the memory of the three-day repose. The air was thick with the scent of wax and incense, and the silence was so dense that I could hear my own heartbeat. In this tiny space, where millions had prayed for centuries, there was now no one but me. I touched the cool stone and suddenly realized: here, in the void, time merged with eternity. There was no past or future—only a quiet dialogue with what remained beyond words. When I emerged, the sun was already setting, casting its last rays onto the church dome. And in my soul, despite the emptiness around me, an unusual sensation remained—as if I had briefly touched something infinitely greater than I had imagined. #israel #jerusalem #jerusalem #churchoftheholysepulchrechurch #easter2026 #jerusalem #holysepulchrechurch #israel

🇮🇱 Jerusalem|Explore the Holy Land of the Three Religions on foot, a millennia-old sacred city carrying faith and history! ✨The glory of God shines over this city! Even the air here carries the weight of faith✨ A three-thousand-year-old holy city, every step a miracle Jerusalem means "City of Peace" in Hebrew, but today it has become a place of conflict. The separation wall at the Israel-Palestine border is covered with graffiti, filled with resentment and sorrow! 📍Must-visit spots in the Old City: 1️⃣ Western Wall Plaza (Wailing Wall) The spiritual center for Jews worldwide! Write your wishes on a paper slip and tuck it into the cracks of the stones. The Wailing Wall is a remaining section of the ancient Jewish Second Temple's retaining wall. Countless Jews scattered around the world return to Jerusalem and quietly pray before this wall, sharing the hardships of their exile, hence the name "Wailing Wall." 📸 Best time: early morning for fewer crowds and beautiful light and shadow Women must wear headscarves to enter; men and women pray separately on different sides. 2️⃣ Church of the Holy Sepulchre The holiest site in Christianity! It is the place where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and resurrected, witnessing Jesus carrying the heavy cross and walking the "Way of the Cross" to the execution site. Many Christians come here to touch the Stone of Anointing under dim candlelight. 💡Tips: The monks in black robes make great photo subjects, but please keep quiet. 3️⃣ Al-Aqsa Mosque The third holiest site in Islam! Alongside the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, it stands on the Temple Mount, with its golden dome shining brilliantly in the sunlight. ⚠ Note: Non-Muslims can only visit the exterior, and conservative dress is required. 🍴 Food Recommendations: 🔸 Hummus with pita bread (any small alley shop in the Old City is excellent) 🔸 Pomegranate juice! Freshly squeezed and super sweet (beware of staining clothes) 🔸 Jewish pastries Baba/bourekas with fragrant cheese filling 🚶‍♂️ Hidden Experiences: · Visit Mahane Market before the Friday Sabbath to see the bustling Jewish shopping scene · Capture panoramic sunset shots of the Golden Gate silhouette from the Mount of Olives · Join the free Western Wall tunnel tour (advance booking required) 💣 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: · The Old City’s stone pavements are very slippery! Wear non-slip shoes · Bargain in the market starting from one-third of the asking price · Public transport stops during the Sabbath (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset)

“We think this is where World War III will begin.” Alla____hu Akbar! Alla_____hu Akbar! At the Dome of the Rock, groups of men shouted this repeatedly. Meaning “God Allah is Greatest,” this phrase often preceded terrorist attacks in the West. Located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock is the holiest of the holy for three theistic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. While the general areas outside of the mosque were open to tourists and the Jewish people, the Golden Dome and the mosque only permitted Muslims for worship. At the public area, the Jewish people often encountered animosity. The Arab worshipers that gathered in groups would chant, “alla____hu akbar!” to shoo them (and the secular and the religious tourists) away. Our tour guide stressed again and again: no Bibles! Security at the Dome of the Rock had to do with the presence (or actually, the forced absence) of the Bible. The rule was very strict. That was just one of the many ways that tension expressed itself at the holiest of the holy. The Muslims believed that Prophet Mohammed ascended to Heavens from the foundation rock at the Dome. The Jewish people and the Christians believed that this was the site where Abraham sacrificed his son Isaac. The Arabic chant notwithstanding, the area surrounding the dome was serene. I walked around in the wonderful weather, sun-soaked. Although I fancied a sneak-in for a look, I dared not temper with Muslim religious decrees. Nor would I stretch the limits of our Arabic Christian tour guide’s explicit warnings. A close view of the architecture served all my purposes. Furthermore, the Muslim-Jewish tension at play opened my eyes. Their interactions here were representative of the centuries-old strife between these peoples. Construction for the Golden Dome completed in 691 A.D., by the Muslim Caliph Abd Al Malik. It stood at the former site of a Roman temple, which was built on the yet former site of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. With the Roman invasion came the destruction of the Second Temple in 70A.D. n the Dome’s long history, many religious administrators have overseen and restored the structure. The most notable was the Jordanian Arabs. They shouldered the funds necessary for the gold-plated dome. The Muslim religious trust is the current administrator overseeing the Dome, after years of contentions. The three religions all laid claims on the Dome’s sacredness and significance. Lavish mosaics line the interior of the Dome. The photographs online were the second-best option for me as I did not dare going inside. #jerusalem #islam #abraham #christianity #judaism #israel #religion #travel

Jerusalem: A Legendary City of Three Major Religions 🏰Jerusalem is an ancient city located in the Palestinian region of West Asia, known as the holy city of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It has a long history and a splendid culture, and the city is full of many relics with profound religious significance. 🏤In Judaism, Jerusalem is the capital of the ancient Jewish kingdom, with the famous Wailing Wall, a symbol of Jewish faith and unity. For Christianity, this is where important events such as the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus took place, and buildings such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are of great significance. Islam regards Jerusalem as the third holy city, with important religious sites such as the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The unique religious status of this city makes it occupy a very important position in the world history and cultural map, and it has also become the focus of global attention due to complex religious and geopolitical factors.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary refers to the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary by her parents St. Anne and St. Joachim. The Catholic Church celebrates Mary’s birthday on September 8th, nine months after the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated on December 8th. The Feast, like the Assumption of Mary, originated in Jerusalem. It began in the fifth century as the Feast of the “Basilica Sanctae Mariae ubi nata est”, now called the Basilica of St. Anne. In the seventh century, the feast was celebrated at Rome as the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The scene was frequently depicted in art, as part of cycles of the Life of the Virgin Mary. These late medieval depictions are often valuable records of domestic interiors from their period, and were often in a wealthy household. Apostolic tradition places Mary’s birthplace either in the Church of Saint Anne in Jerusalem, or in Tzippori, Israel where St. Anne once lived. We as Catholics, celebrate the birth of Mary, as this is truly the “Birth of Salvation”. We know that Mary went on to give birth to Jesus, our Savior. Many faithful throughout the world hold a birthday party for Mary, and celebrate to commemorate that beautiful event. Here is a prayer that can be said on this Feast Day. Prayer Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Of course, one of the places you will visit while staying in Israel is the holy city of Jerusalem. This time, I went to the Western Wall, a holy site for Judaism, for the first time. Jerusalem is about 40 minutes by train from Tel Aviv. The city of Jerusalem has a European atmosphere and has been developed into a tourist destination, so it is not that difficult to travel there. After walking inside the Jerusalem walls for about 10 minutes, you will find the famous Western Wall. #Israel #Jerusalem #Wailing Wall #Holy Site #Middle East Travel #Overseas Travel

Praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel 🇳🇮 One of the holiest places on Earth Jesuralem was destroyed and rebuilt many times but the wall remained intact. It is believed that God never leave the wall and it will never be destroyed. It is said placing a prayer notes at the western/wailing wall, prayers will be heard and granted.🙏 Twice a year these prayer notes are collected and buried in the Jewish cemetery on the Mount Olives.

Located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City, Jesus' tomb was sealed in 1555 and remained shuttered for centuries. The tomb is in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. According to traditions dating back to the 4th century, it contains two sites considered holy in Christianity: the site where Jesus was crucified,[2] at a place known as Calvary or Golgotha, and Jesus's empty tomb, which is where he was buried and resurrected

#summerbreak History of Fairytale? Let’s find out this summer! the Church of Holy Schelpure is this mind-blowing place that's straight out of a fairy tale. Located in a hidden corner of a mystical forest, this church is a sight to behold. The architecture is unlike anything you've ever seen, with its intricate carvings and towering spires. And the vibe inside? It's pure magic, my friend. The air is filled with a sense of peace and serenity that'll make you forget all your worries. Whether you're a believer or not, this place has a way of touching your soul. So, if you're up for an enchanting experience, make sure to visit the Church of Holy Schelpure. It's like stepping into a world where dreams come true. There’s so much to see and you wouldn’t want to leave!

First of all, be careful not to arrive on a Saturday - it is a holiday and pretty much all shops and restaurants are closed except McDonalds. In case you have no choice, then you can wait until 7 pm when a few smaller shops will open. Most people book a tour to experience Jerusalem. However, if you are not into listening to historic details, just explore by yourself. The Old City is not large and there are no entrance fees to most attractions. If you leave the Old City and walk out West at the Jaffa Gate, you might get Jerusalem city Wifi. It is a bit spotty but helps. Staying overnight is pricey and low cost options are few and can be dicey. I almost wanted to book a bed at the Cinema Hostel as there were vacancies. Thank God I did not but thought to check it out first. On arrival there I stood at a looked door and the voice per speaker told me no vacancies. So be careful, check the places out before you book. If you want to take a local bus to Bethlehem or even to Hebron, go to the Damascus Gate.

The most ICONIC site in Jerusalem belongs to the Dome of the Rock! It has got to be the highlight of my trip getting up close to the shrine! Dome of the Rock is a significant Islamic shrine in Jerusalem. It is one of the most sacred sites to both Jews and Muslims! However, before visiting the site, you must do some homework first! While there are multiple entrances to the dome of the rock, you can ONLY enter the dome of the rock as a non muslim from the Western Wall! The entrance is only open for 1-2 hours from Sunday to Thursday and they’ll let you go on a bridge! Also, since it is a religious site, dress as modest as you can! Cover your knees~ #jerusalem #israel

Jerusalem is one of the prettiest cities in the Middle East! There are plenty of things to do there such as visiting the old town, going to local markets or taking strolls in the many public parks. The food in Jerusalem is amazing with vegetarian food being very easy to find and access. There are a small number of bars in the city centre including one which has a tribute to Abba and The Eurovision Song Contest! #israel #jerusalem #mountainview #urbanexplorer

This is the holiest site in Christianity as it contains the site of Jesus's crucifixion and his tomb where rose on the third day. I am not religious but I could feel the weight of history as I entered the church. It is very popular with tourists and pilgrims so be prepared for a long wait at times. The church is located just a few hundred metres from holy Muslim and Jewish sites in the old city.

When wandering the old city of Jerusalem, I stumbled upon the Cotton Merchants market. This is the joy of getting lost! it is a beautiful lane that leads to the Al Aqsa mosque, and will amaze passers by with the array of items on sale. The market has a history that goes back centuries and is noted for its diverse sweets and food on sale. Be aware that non Muslims are not allowed to visit Al Aqsa at certain times.

The holiest site in the Jewish faith is the Western Wall, located in the old city of Jerusalem. This ancient limestone wall has a history that dates back two thousand years. The Via Dolorosa, also known as the Way of the Cross, is the most sacred road in the hearts of Christians. This road refers to the last section of the road that Jesus walked after carrying the cross. It starts near the Lion Gate and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was finally crucified. It passes through fourteen stations in between and is about 500 meters long. Although today's Via Dolorosa is only a pilgrimage route designed in the 16th century for Catholics, it has not hindered believers from making pilgrimages. Every Friday at 3pm, Franciscan priests will give free guided tours, leading devout groups to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. The 14 Stations of the Cross are listed below: The first stop is near the lions, which was once the Roman governor's palace and is now a school for Palestinian Arabs. Jesus was sentenced to death here. The second stop is now the Franciscan Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross and the Church of Flagellation, where Jesus carried the cross. The third stop is at the Polish Chapel on the corner, where Jesus fell for the first time. The fourth station is very close to the third station and is now an Armenian Catholic chapel where Jesus met the Virgin Mary. The fifth station is now the Franciscan chapel, where Simon of Cyrene was forced to help Jesus carry the cross. A small convent chapel has now been built at the sixth station. At the sixth station, a woman named Veronica wiped the sweat and blood off Jesus' face with a towel. The towel is now kept in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Continuing along the souk, you will reach the seventh stop, which is now also the Franciscan Chapel, where Jesus fell again. The eighth station is located next to the Greek Orthodox church, where Jesus comforts the women of Jerusalem and advises them not to cry for themselves. The place where Jesus fell for the third time in the ninth station is now an Orthodox church. The tenth to fourteenth stations are all located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They are Station 10: Jesus was stripped of his clothes; Station 11: Jesus was crucified; Station 12: Jesus died on the cross; Station 13: Jesus was unloaded and his body was cleaned; and Station 14: Jesus was buried and resurrected here. Although the Via Dolorosa has fourteen stations, it is only 500 meters long, so it is not difficult for tourists who travel light. However, some of the stone roads have some height differences and dark slopes, which may not be very comfortable to walk on. However, this journey was extremely difficult for Jesus, who was carrying a cross weighing hundreds of pounds. There are now many souvenir shops on both sides of the Via Dolorosa, selling holy objects and souvenirs related to Jesus or Christianity. The author couldn't help but buy a few wooden crosses with the seals of the fourteen stations on them, which are very worth collecting.
