Kandy Royal Botanic Gardens
Getting There - There is bus running frequently from Kandy city to the southern gate of Botanic Gardens during the day. Just hop on one the them and head out for this once in a lifetime walk.
Highlight - The Royal Botanic Gardens is on its own a reason to visit Kandy. It is the largest of the botanical gardens of Sri Lanka and arguably the finest of its kind in Asia.
The garden is about 58 hectares large and hosts more than 4,000 different sorts of plants. Colourful orchids, pleasant winds, tall trees. and proximity with the Mahaweli river is a beautiful treat for t he eyes.
The garden is also the best place to experience and witness local lives in this historic city. When I visited there years back, I saw kids running around freely and wildly in the park, couples spending intimate time together and laughing at each other’s jokes, family enjoying quality time while having bountiful food. It was wonderful to see this amazing park filled with such a lively atmosphere.

A Gem in Sri Lanka - Lake Kandyan
The Kandy Lake is in the heart of the city and is considered a sacred relic of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.
Highlight - The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and a picturesque mountain stands tall right behind this beauty.
When I visited there years back, I spent half of the day just walking and gazing at the enchanting body of water, absorbing the daily life around it.
At the side of the Lake lies the Sacred Tooth Relic - it is always a busy place with foreign tourists, school children and hundreds of devotees clad in white who throng to venerate the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Make sure to visit there when passing through.

The Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic
Kandy City is located in the Central Highlands, virtually dead center of Sri Lanka's small island. The legendary Sri Dalada Maligawa, popularly known as the Temple of the Tooth, is the city's crown treasure. The word ‘Maligawa' means ‘palace,' and the shrine is part of the palace complex. The entire edifice is at least three centuries old and has witnessed numerous kings come and go. It has experienced brutal conflicts and tranquil reigns, and it is one of the island's most historically significant locations.
The Temple of the Tooth is a must-see for art and history buffs. The enormous carved entrance arch with elephants on either side greets visitors as they approach the entrance gates, which lie above the moat. A carved ‘welcome mat,' also known as a ‘moon stone,' sits on the ground in front of the entryway.
The shrine's interior is adorned in intricate and finely detailed artwork. The temple transports visitors to a previous era when monarchs walked the Sri Lankan earth, with low curved ceilings of hallways and paved flooring polished by a million feet.

Sri Lanka Kandy Lake Royal Botanical Garden.
Today, I want to share a particularly meaningful travel experience with you, which is finding the tree planted by Premier Zhou and his wife in the Royal Botanical Garden in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This botanical garden is truly a real-life version of the Wizard of Oz!
Attraction Introduction
The Royal Botanical Garden in Kandy (Peradeniya Botanical Gardens) is one of the most famous botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, located about 5.5 kilometers southwest of Kandy City, covering an area of about 147 acres. It is home to plants from all over the world, especially many rare tree species. Walking into the botanical garden is like entering a green world, with various plants blooming and a faint fragrance of flowers in the air, making you feel relaxed and happy.
Special Recommendation: The Tree Planted by Premier Zhou and His Wife
During our visit to the botanical garden, we found the commemorative tree planted by Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife, Ms. Deng Yingchao. This tree is located in a prominent position in the park, with a detailed introduction board recording this historical story. I was really excited when I saw this tree because I know many friends have been here but couldn't find it. The tree planted by Premier Zhou and his wife 🌳 is in the Memorial Area. I suggest you get a visitor guide before entering the park, which clearly marks the area 31. Just follow the map 🗺, and you'll find many trees 🌳 planted by national leaders in that area.
Practical Information
Tickets:
The adult ticket price is 3,000 rupees (about 15 US dollars).
Opening Hours:
The botanical garden is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Best Visiting Time:

Transportation:
You can take a bus or taxi from Kandy city center, which takes about 20 minutes. The botanical garden also provides parking, which is very convenient for self-driving tourists.

Since you need to walk a lot, it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and lightweight clothing. Remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water to stay hydrated.
3. Photography Tips:
The botanical garden is picturesque and a great place for photography. It is recommended to bring a camera or a high-pixel phone and take photos from multiple angles, especially panoramic and detailed shots of the commemorative tree.

Known as the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean,' Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, an independent island nation in the Indian Ocean, is shaped like a teardrop and is also called a tear of God and the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean.'
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has an economy primarily based on agriculture. Its most important export product is Ceylon tea, and it is also a gem-rich island, ranking among the top five gem-producing countries in the world.
Sri Lanka also boasts endless beaches, timeless ruins, hospitable people, fresh tea gardens, a pleasant climate, and the romance of seaside trains. The mystery of this Buddhist country makes it like a maiden behind a sari, sparking the desire of tourists to explore.
The most recommended tourist attractions in Sri Lanka are:
Lion Rock: Here, you can admire the world-famous Sigiriya 'Heavenly Maidens' frescoes through a spiral staircase and climb to the summit to see the sunset's glow covering the land.
Temple of the Tooth in Kandy: The Kandy Lake reflects the Temple of the Tooth, and the Temple of the Tooth embellishes Kandy Lake, creating the most beautiful scenery in the ancient city of Kandy.
Horton Plains: This is the only national park in Sri Lanka that allows tourists to hike. The 'World's End' cliff and Baker's Falls are the most famous tourist spots here.
British Tea Gardens: Located in the highlands of Nuwara Eliya at an altitude of 2000 meters, it has vast tea gardens and a pleasant climate. The tea produced here is of top quality in color, aroma, taste, and texture, known as the 'Champagne of Tea.'
Stilt Fishing: Fishermen sit on wooden stilts waiting for fish to bite. From a distance, they look like a group of stilt walkers standing in the sea, requiring good balance and enduring both sea winds and sunlight, making it one of the iconic scenes of Sri Lanka.

The Temple of the sacred tooth relic of Buddha in Kandy Sri Lanka
As the sun rose over the misty hills of Kandy, I made my way to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a place steeped in history and spirituality. The air was thick with the scent of incense, and the sound of drums echoed through the courtyard, setting a reverent tone for the day.
Entering the temple, I was struck by the intricate wood carvings and the sense of serenity that pervaded the space. Pilgrims, dressed in white, moved slowly, their hands clasped in prayer, as they approached the shrine that houses the sacred tooth of Buddha. The golden canopy glinted in the soft light, a testament to the devotion and craftsmanship that have preserved this relic through the ages.
As I joined the line to offer my respects, I felt a deep connection to the spiritual heritage of Sri Lanka. The energy within the temple was palpable, a mix of awe, devotion, and peace. After paying my respects, I took a moment to sit by the tranquil lake outside, reflecting on the significance of this sacred site.
The visit left me with a profound sense of calm and reverence, a reminder of the rich cultural and spiritual tapestry that defines this beautiful island.#srilanka #travel #asia #srilankatravel #kandy #buddhism #travelguide #localguides #historicallandmarks

I really enjoyed visiting this famous botanical garden. Many varieties of plants and native trees here. You also can watch a lot of monkeys running around. There are some interesting palms and it’s nice walking around. I could only spend an hour but one could easily spend more time relaxing in the lawns. It’s right next to the river.
I highly recommend this place to visit whenever you’re in Kandy.

Sri Lanka will steal your heart❤️
Sri Lanka was the destination we chose for my Husband and I to meet my cousin and his wife after not seeing them for almost 1.5 years. It was the perfect country for a perfect reunion. We traveled from Colombo to Kandy and back again and thereafter from Colombo to Galle. We visited an Ayurveda garden, gemstone warehouse, tea factory, watched a Cultural Show, 2ent to the Buddha's Tooth relic temple, and visited a Sea Turtle conservation center.
The hotels we stayed at:
Granbell Hotel, Colombo
The Trees, Kandy
The Araliya Redort and Spa, Galle.
Tips:
1. Book a private driver to take you around as it is convenient and they will serve as a tour guide.
2. If you want to do the Blue train you would have to book well in advance. We opted not to do it as based on my research it usually takes 8-9hours (as opposed to the 6-7 hours stated online) from Kandy to Ella and we unfortunately did not have a lot of time in Sri Lanka.
3. The locals are absolutely friendly and so helpful. They do appreciate tips in Sri Lanka.
4. Private tours usually result in the driver taking you to tourist type spots, which can be pricy. Try to visit local malls and supermarkets to get better prices.
5. Check whether any fasts will be observed as we found out that alcohol is not served nationally on a Full Moon Day which is referred to as "Poya."
6. Download the Pick Me App as it can be very useful and convenient to get around.
7. Try to allocate 2 weeks or more to get the best out of your travel to Sri Lanka.
8. For tea Lovers, Sri Lanka is heaven, enjoy the plantations and factories.
9. Driving between the major tourist spots like Colombo to Kandy or Colombo to Galle takes at least 3-4 hours if not more depending on whether you stop along the way, be prepared for these long drives.
I will definitely return to Sri Lanka as there is so much more to do and see!#srilanka #colombo #galle #traveltips
