📍 Kusatsu 396, Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, 377-1711, Japan
Kusatsu Onsen: One of Japan's Top Three Hot Springs
Location: Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan
Kusatsu Town is located in Gunma Prefecture in the Kanto region and is renowned for its hot spring resorts. 🏖️ Atmosphere/Facilities: In the town center, you'll find the Yubatake hot spring source, which is sometimes illuminated depending on the season. Surrounding it are four public baths and several foot baths where tourists can soak their feet and enjoy the rising steam from the hot spring water. Nearby, there is the traditional Goza no Yu bathhouse. Around Yubatake, there are many souvenir shops where you can enjoy street food and then relax in a foot bath to experience something out of the ordinary! To the west, the active volcano Mount Kusatsu-Shirane towers over the area, with a volcanic lake (Yugama) at its summit that features green acidic hot spring water. In the southwest, the Kazawa-Yunomaru Plateau is covered with azalea fields that bloom all at once during the season, creating a stunningly beautiful landscape!
Note: Public baths do not provide towels or soap, so be sure to bring your own face towel and bath towel.
【Kusatsu City】Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen is known as one of Japan's three famous springs. In the center of the hot spring town, which is filled with the scent of sulfur, there is a Yubatake (hot water field). Every minute, 4,000 liters of hot spring water gushes out, and steam is always rising.
There are also footbaths and hand baths around the Yubatake, and you can enjoy strolling around.
Indeed, there are many foreigners, and the area around the Yubatake is crowded with stylish eateries and souvenir shops. The streets are narrow and sloped, and it can get very crowded depending on the time of day.
The hot spring water, being rich in sulfur, felt very effective.
As expected of one of Japan's three famous hot springs, a two-day soaking diary at Kusatsu Onsen~
Located in Kusatsu, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, it is a famous hot spring resort destination, boasting the number one natural hot spring output in Japan, reportedly ranking first for 16 consecutive years. As soon as you step into this place, there is a smell of sulfur, but that is exactly its charm!
🚉Transportation tips:
If you're not in a hurry, I recommend taking the bus directly from Shinjuku Station. Without traffic, it takes about four hours to get there~
After leaving Shinjuku Station, cross the street and go up to the third floor, where the bus terminal is located. It's best to buy your ticket the day before and take the opportunity to stroll around Shinjuku~
❤Reasons to recommend:
The scenery along the bus ride is beautiful, and if you're lucky, you can even see Mount Fuji, which is one of the reasons I recommend taking the bus. Once you arrive at Kusatsu Bus Terminal, it's just a two or three hundred meters walk to Yubatake, where the entire street is steaming, and footbaths can be found all over the small town, along with many public hot springs. The most famous is probably Otakinoyu, which costs only 1100 yen. It has both indoor and outdoor baths, and is fully equipped with toiletries, but you need to bring your own towel~
🏨Hotel environment:
We stayed at Kusatsu Hotel Unkai Onsen this time. This hotel not only has three bath pools but also offers one night with two meals~ We booked a Japanese-style deluxe room which was very spacious, and the garden view from the window was also super beautiful. We went for a soak in the afternoon of our arrival day, where the toiletries were super complete. After changing into a yukata, we could take pictures around the hotel. We had dinner reserved for 18:30, and after a lovely meal, we went for a stroll around Yubatake to digest, where a local specialty store was very nice to shop at, and I accidentally started a shopping spree
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we soaked in another bath pool, then enjoyed a free freshly ground coffee at the third-floor book bar, and checked out with great satisfaction ^_^
💰Average cost:
We went during a long holiday, and the hot spring hotel was over 3000 per night, about 1500 per person, but it included meals and hot spring baths, which was quite a good deal. On weekdays, it's probably only about 2000 per night, and besides shopping, there's basically no need to spend extra money.
If you have a sufficient budget, you can also choose Kusatsu Onsen Nara-ya, which is right next to Yubatake. The cafe is a popular spot for people to check in, and the meals are even more exquisite~

Japanese hot spring hotel recommendation: Kusatsu Onsen's Kiroha, high cost performance, private hot spring
Here is my review of the hot spring hotel 'Kiroha':
First, let me introduce the location of this place. The hotel is located in Kusatsu Onsen, Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. The address is 464-241 Kusatsu Shirane, Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture.
How to get to the hotel? If you are departing from Tokyo, I suggest you take a train. First, take the express train 'Kusatsu' to Nagano Kusatsu-guchi Station, then transfer to a bus to Kusatsu Onsen. Upon arrival, you can take the hotel's shuttle bus to the hotel. If you drive, it takes about 3 hours to get to the hotel from Ueno Station.
Why do I think the hot spring service of this hotel is cost-effective? This is because the hotel's private hot spring (no extra charge) is unlimited, you can use it at any time. Moreover, there are three different hot springs to choose from, all of which are of very good quality. If you go as a couple, you will definitely have a different experience. I mainly recommend 'Iwamuro' and 'Takeza'. Sometimes you need to queue up, but if the light is on, it means someone is using the hot spring.
About the price of the hotel, the price of a single room is between 13,000 and 17,000 yen (800-1000 RMB), I think this price is very reasonable.
Finally, I want to remind everyone that no matter which price plan you choose, the hot spring includes 23 hot spring pools, two large baths, and three private hot springs. The only difference is accommodation and breakfast. If you only care about the quality of the hot spring, then the cheapest plan is enough.
Hot Spring at Kusatsu Onsen Town
#fallishere
This is an amazing onsen town! Kusatsu is one of the most famous in the country centered around its voluminous spring,
Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts and is blessed with large volumes of high quality hot spring water said to cure every illness but lovesickness.
I enjoyed the boardwalk around the entire spring that has endless photo opportunities in this unique environment. It’s surrounded by cute shops and cafes. We enjoyed some snacks like yakitori & beef skewers.
We had a traditional onsen at Ohtaki No Yu. its crazy hot but relaxing. Afterwards we enjoyed some cold milk in the cafe to cool down.
Overall, it’s an interesting town and very beautiful. Should visit if you are nearby.
Kusatsu Onsen (One of Japan's best onsen)
Located in the mountainous region of Kanto area, Gunma, you'll be stunned by the beauty of this small town where onsens dated back in Edo era are highlighted. You can also have a foot bath while drinking a can of beer next to the main stream, Yubatake area. Can be visited all year round but the winter season will make your photos more dramatic creating a beautiful contrast with their ancient houses. Book one of the ryokans or traditional inn and grab their free yukata clothing during your stay and wear it while roaming around the town. And don't forget to watch their traditional kneading of thermal water known as Yumomi.

Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts and is blessed with large volumes of high quality hot spring water said to cure every illness but lovesickness.
Well known as a hot spring resort for many centuries, Kusatsu's fame was further boasted by German doctor Erwin von Baelz, who served at the imperial court in the late 1800s and recommended Kusatsu for its water's health benefits. #wintergetaway

It was first slipped in the Kusatsu Ski Resort in Japan in 2019, and it is only a two-minute drive from the Kusatsu Modern Onsen Hotel.
It doesn't matter if you don't have a snowboard with a snowboard. A full set of ski equipment can be rented here, and both the snowsuit and the snowboard are very good.
The snow is very delicate, and the primary road is really suitable for my newbie. Although it has also fallen N, it is still very slippery.
