If you've visited half of these hidden gem cities, consider yourself a winner
Once you're tired of crowded places, you'll appreciate the charm of less-traveled spots. Don't always focus on the popular attractions; some places are just a 2-hour high-speed train ride away, offer incredible value, and boast unique, wild scenery. If you've been to half of these 8 places, I truly commend your travel savvy.
1️⃣ Qiqihar | Heilongjiang
When visiting Zhalong Wetland, don't just focus on the red-crowned crane release. ⏰ At 6:30 AM, before the mist has fully lifted, dewdrops cling to the reeds, and the cranes wade in the shallows. That scene is ten times more serene than the release show. Locals won't tell you this, but if you turn right out of the scenic area's main gate, there's a "Xinxin Family BBQ" restaurant. 🥩 Large slices of beef sizzle on the iron plate, and the dipping sauce, with fermented bean curd and sesame, makes every bite a carb-filled delight. ⚠️ Never go to the wetland at noon; there's no shade from the scorching sun, and the cranes will have sought shelter. If you're with seniors or children, consider the 4:00 PM slot, when the light is softer and the cranes are more active.
2️⃣ Suqian | Jiangsu
Hongze Lake Wetland is an underrated treasure. My mistake was only sticking to the main paths. 🍓 If you go in May, be sure to turn into the poplar forest deep within the wetland. The ground will be covered with wild strawberries, sweet and tart, much more flavorful than those sold in supermarkets. Take the small train through the metasequoia forest, and your ears will be filled with birdsong. ⏰ It's best to go the day after it rains; the humidity will be perfect, mushrooms will be popping up, and if you're lucky, you might see flocks of egrets. Locals often go to the "Chu Street" area for dinner, ordering a plate of small fish potstickers. The crispy bottom of the potstickers soaked in fish soup is so good, I could eat three servings. ⚠️ The boat rental at the scenic area closes at 5:00 PM, so if you want to row, go early.
3️⃣ Xinzhou | Shanxi
Xinzhou is a place where "one city hides three wonders." If you only have one day, my recommendation is to first rush to Yanmen Pass, then see Laoniuwan. The steps at Yanmen Pass are so steep they'll make your legs weak, but standing on the pass tower, watching the Great Wall snake along the ridge with banners fluttering in the wind, the desolate grandeur is something a phone camera can't capture even a tenth of. 🏔️ Laoniuwan is quieter; the Yellow River makes a turn here, like a ribbon wrapped around the waist of the Loess Plateau. In the evening, find a farmhouse restaurant, order a pot of Yellow River carp, and the fish meat will be so tender it falls apart with a chopstick. ⚠️ Wutai Mountain is far from the city, a 2-hour drive. If you're short on time, it's better to eat a bowl of knife-cut noodles in Xinzhou city. The noodles, freshly cut by the restaurant owner, and the sour, fragrant broth will warm you from head to toe. 🚄 A taxi from Xinzhou West Station to Yanmen Pass costs about CNY 50; carpooling is more economical.
4️⃣ Yulin | Shaanxi
The beautiful scenery here is like the Earth's folds, each one hiding a story. The rocks of Wave Valley resemble flowing waves. ⏰ It's best to go after 4:00 PM, when the sunlight hits from the side, making the rock patterns look like paintings outlined in gold. To avoid crowds, walk deeper; there's a wild path leading to "Yixiantian" (A Line of Sky), where the rock walls are so narrow only one person can pass, and you look up to a sliver of sky. 🌊 Xianglu Temple, by the Yellow River in Jia County, is built on a giant rock, with the Yellow River flowing beneath. I sat at the temple entrance, watching a boat go upstream, the boatman's chants echoing through the valley. 🍜 Locals love to go to "Saishang Fanzhuang" and order a "Pisanxian," a stew of lamb, potatoes, and vermicelli that warms you to the core. ⚠️ The cliff carvings at Hongshixia are worth seeing, but be aware of mosquitoes.
5️⃣ Jinhua | Zhejiang
Jinhua is an underrated carb paradise. Hengdian World Studios is too big to explore in one day. My suggestion is to head straight to the "Qingming Shanghe Tu" scenic area and watch the "Bianliang Yimeng" performance; it's more interesting than watching other film crews. 🏯 You must lie down in a boat to enter Shuanglong Cave. With your body flat, the rock walls pass by your nose, feeling like you're traveling through time. Outside the cave, at the "Old Li Bing" shop at the foot of the mountain, the pastry crust is crispy, and the meat filling is juicy; one bite can burn your tongue. ⏰ If you want to see Jinhua River in the morning mist, go to the "Bayong Road" ancient street at 5:00 AM. There will be no one around, and the old camphor trees will appear faintly in the fog. ⚠️ Hengdian tickets are expensive. If you're only visiting one scenic area, it's recommended to check the performance schedule online in advance to string together shows for better value.
6️⃣ Luoyang | Henan
Luoyang is a place where history weighs heavily on your feet. You have to see the Lushena Buddha at Longmen Grottoes with your own eyes to understand what "the smile of a thousand years ago" means. ⏰ At 5:30 PM, as tourists disperse, the setting sun bathes the Buddha statues in warm gold, and their shadows stretch across the Yi River. In that moment, you'll feel that all your efforts were worth it. 🥟 The "Old Luoyang Noodle Shop" in the city center serves sour paste noodles. The sourness is intense, but with chives and chili oil, it gets more delicious with every bite. At Guanlin Temple, the ancient cypress trees are over 400 years old, with red ribbons tied to their trunks, rustling in the wind. 🏔️ The top of Laojun Mountain is extremely cold. If you're bringing elders, be sure to rent thick coats, otherwise, waiting for the sunset at "Jinding" will leave you shivering. ⚠️ The peony exhibition at Wangcheng Park is at its peak only in mid-April. If you go at other times, you'll mostly see buds.
7️⃣ Qingdao | Shandong
Qingdao is more than just beer and shrimp. The area around Laoshan Taiqing Palace has ancient trees reaching to the sky, providing dense shade. ⏰ Go at 8:00 AM for peace and quiet, and you can hear the Taoist priests chanting. 🍻 At "Wangjie BBQ" near Zhanqiao Pier, the grilled squid tentacles are crispy, brushed with a sauce that includes minced garlic. A bite of skewer with a sip of beer is the perfect way to enjoy summer. The Olympic Sailing Center light show is best viewed from "Lover's Dam," with the sea breeze blowing and the lights scattering across the waves. ⚠️ Never go to Zhanqiao Pier on a July weekend; it's so crowded you can barely move. To take panoramic photos without people, go at 6:00 AM, when the seagulls are still idling on the mudflats.
8️⃣ Xianning | Hubei
Xianning is Hubei's refreshing little gem. The Ancient Chibi Battlefield isn't as grand as imagined, but standing before the "Cliff Carvings" and watching the river water hit the banks, you can still feel the heroic spirit of "Zhou Yu's Chibi." 🍃 Outside the scenic area, there's an old street where you must try "Chibi Fish Cake." The fish is mashed into a paste and steamed, making it as tender as tofu. ⏰ In the evening, take a walk by "Lushui Lake." The sunset paints the water orange, and someone singing on a boat, their voice softened by the wind, drifts over. ⚠️ There's a "Jinluan Palace" in the Chibi scenic area that feels very artificial; if you're short on time, you can skip it.
Of these 8, I personally recommend Xinzhou and Yulin the most, for their desolation and tranquility. Which ones have you visited? Let me know in the comments.
