The island features windmill fields, traditional stone houses, and glass walkways. Cycling around the island is the ultimate way to explore it. 📍 Location: Pingtan County, Fuzhou City, accessible via direct high-speed rail from Fuzhou · -- 🌲 Arxan, Inner Mongolia | The Little Switzerland of the East In autumn, Arxan transforms into a sea of golden birch forests, and the Tuofengling Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is so blue it looks surreal. In winter, it turns into a vast snowscape of forests. It's recommended to visit for the autumn scenery between late September and mid-October. Daily visitor limits apply, so advance reservations are a must. 📍 Location: Arxan City, Hinggan League, fly to Ulanhot or Hailar and transfer · -- 🏯 Shaxi Ancient Town, Yunnan | The Only Surviving Ancient Market on the Tea Horse Road Without the hustle and bustle of Lijiang, it only features cobblestone streets, ancient performance stages, and the murals of Xingjiao Temple. Go check it out before it completely blows up! 📍 Location: Jianchuan County, Dali Prefecture, about a 2-hour drive from Dali · -- 🏔️ Kanas, Xinjiang | God's Private Reserve Autumn here is like a painter's palette—golden birches, red maples, and dark green spruces reflect in the emerald waters of Moon Bay. The best time to catch the morning mist at Shenxian Bay is between 7:00 and 9:00 AM. 📍 Location: Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, fly to Altay and transfer · -- 🗻 Mount Kailash, Tibet | The Center of the World Standing at an altitude of 6,656 meters, Mount Kailash is a sacred peak recognized by Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism alike. The kora (circumambulation) trek is about 52 kilometers and takes 2 to 3 days. Even if you don't do the trek, simply gazing at its pyramid-like silhouette from Darchen will fill you with an awe that transcends religion. ⚠️ A border permit is required, and joining a guided tour is recommended. 📍 Location: Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, about a 4-day drive from Lhasa · -- 🌊 Nanji Island, Zhejiang | Oceanic Meadows and Seashell Beaches As detailed previously—cliffside meadows, seashell beaches, and "Blue Tears." Daily visitors are capped at 1,500, so getting a ticket is all about having fast fingers. 📍 Location: Pingyang County, Wenzhou City, a 2-hour boat ride from Aojiang Pier · -- 📍 General Tips · The "National Geographic" selection highlights "must-visit in a lifetime" places, not "only visit once in a lifetime" places. They are worth returning to over and over again. · Most of the selected destinations are in remote areas, so be sure to plan your transportation and accommodation well in advance. · Respect the local culture and natural environment, and make sure to take all your trash with you. · For peak seasons, it is absolutely essential to book your flights and accommodations 3 to 6 months in advance. Making the "National Geographic" list isn't the reason they are beautiful; rather, they have always been stunning, and now the world has finally noticed them. Some landscapes simply must be seen with your own eyes. 🌍

For many people visiting Tibet for the first time, the prayer flags are captivating. Whether at mountain passes, by the roadside, or at the foot of snowy mountains, you can always see strings of colorful prayer flags fluttering high in the wind. Red, yellow, blue, green, and white stand out vividly against the plateau's blue sky, making every snapshot a great photo.📸 Especially when the wind is strong, the prayer flags keep fluttering, and the sound is very clear. Standing nearby and watching for a few minutes, it's easy to lose track of time. They are commonly seen in the streets of Lhasa, on the way to Yamdrok Lake, or along the Ali route. They are also one of the most memorable scenes for many people after arriving in Tibet. Many tourists initially just think "the colors are beautiful," but the farther they go and the more they see, the more they realize— the prayer flags have become part of Tibet's landscape. Blue sky, snowy mountains, grasslands, and the prayer flags fluttering in the wind, this is probably what Tibet looks like in many people's memories.🏔️

The most healing way to travel the Ali West Line: embrace the vastness of nature by day, and understand the profound heritage of the plateau by night. Connecting the natural wonders of the Zanda Earth Forest with the millennia of human history at the Ali Museum is the right way to unlock the secrets of the "Roof of the World." The Zanda Earth Forest National Geopark is definitely the visual highlight of Ali. Millions of years of wind and rain erosion have carved out layers of earth forest gullies, with continuous clusters of earth pillars spread out in a scattered, vast, and majestic display that is visually striking. In the distance, snow-capped mountains are covered in snow year-round, clear and sacred. The warm yellow earth forest and pure white snow mountains in the same frame—one weathered, one pure—outline the ultimate wilderness scenery unique to Ali. You can park for free at the observation decks along the way to take photos. It is recommended to visit in the afternoon; the soft light captures the delicate textures of the earth forest, creating a perfect atmosphere. After taking in the mountain and sea scenery, be sure to visit the Ali Museum in Shiquanhe Town to settle your mind. As the world's highest-altitude comprehensive museum, it holds the complete timeline of Ali's history. The seven exhibition halls inside follow a progressive order, showcasing the story of this "Roof of the World" from plateau geological evolution and the ancient Zhangzhung civilization to the rise and fall of the Guge Kingdom and intangible cultural heritage. The museum's treasures—the golden mask, ancient scriptures, and replicas of thousand-year-old rock paintings—are truly stunning. With traditional costumes, folk artifacts, and other collections, you can quickly grasp Ali's millennia of history and cultural depth. ✅ Practical travel tips 1. Required documents: You must carry your border defense permit throughout the trip, as inspections at checkpoints along the way are strict. 2. Altitude sickness reminder: The entire region is at an altitude of 4,000m+, so move slowly, avoid strenuous exercise, and take measures to protect against wind and sun. 3. Sightseeing pace: Visit the Zanda Earth Forest and photograph the panoramic snow mountain views during the day, and visit the museum in the evening to avoid harsh light and enjoy a quieter, less crowded experience. 4. Supply tips: There are no supermarkets on the wilderness sections, so prepare drinking water and dry food in advance. The romance of Ali is half vast natural scenery and half the weight of millennia of human history. This loop trip is both healing and unforgettable.

Visiting Zada in Ngari, the most classic short trip is to combine the million-year-old earth forest landscape with the thousand-year-old Tholing Monastery. Half is the vast wilderness of mountains and rivers, and half is the Tibetan cultural heritage accumulated over a millennium. These are also the two most representative and photogenic routes in Zada. Zada Earth Forest National Geopark is a must-see highlight of the Ngari West Line. Millions of years of wind, rain, and lake erosion have carved out rolling gullies and earth forests, with clear, three-dimensional layers stretching vast and magnificent to the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The yellowish-brown texture of the earth, paired with the distant snow-capped peaks, is both desolate and sacred. There are free viewing platforms along the entire route, allowing you to stop and take photos at any time. The afternoon sunset is the best time; the warm light hits the folds of the earth forest, creating beautiful layers of light and shadow, giving every shot a cinematic quality. After taking in the magnificent nature, head to Tholing Monastery in Zada County for an instant shift to a tranquil atmosphere. Built over a millennium ago, this ancient temple is the oldest in Ngari and a core sacred site of the later diffusion of Tibetan Buddhism, standing quietly by the Xiangquan River. The red walls and ancient halls are simple and weathered. Inside, the temple preserves a large number of exquisite thousand-year-old murals, with colors that remain bright and delicate, and brushstrokes that are vivid, hiding the religious heritage of the Guge Kingdom. Outside the temple, white stupas line the river, prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the environment is peaceful and healing—perfect for a slow, meditative walk and quiet photography. ✅ Practical self-drive guide 1. Route: Tholing Monastery in the county town → Earth forest viewing platforms along the way. It's a smooth route with no backtracking and a relaxed pace. 2. Documents: A border pass is required for the entire journey and will be checked at the Zada checkpoint. 3. Altitude is 3,700m+. Slow down, avoid strenuous exercise, and take measures against wind and sun. 4. Duration: About 1 hour for Tholing Monastery, and 2 hours is enough to walk and take photos along the earth forest route. The romance of Ngari lies in the vast wilderness paired with the serenity of ancient temples. This short trip to Zada allows you to see the wonders of the earth while understanding the thousand-year-old stories of the plateau.

[Introduction] On October 21, Yamdrok Lake is cloudy, 0–10°C, with light winds—this is the clearest season of the year to see the "Yamdrok blue." As the summer peak tourist season fades, the lakeside meadows turn deep golden yellow, and the Kamba La snow mountains begin to accumulate snow. The lake water is even bluer than in summer: the high-altitude lake surface at an elevation of 4,441m displays three layers of color—royal blue, emerald green, and peacock blue—under the low-angle autumn sun. Shannan is the birthplace of Tibetan culture. This trip covers the first palace in Tibet and the first monastery to feature the Three Jewels of Buddhism. The altitude is much gentler than in Ali or Shigatse, making it a perfect second stop for your Tibet trip. [Itinerary] 🛬 D1: Lhasa → Kamba La Pass (4,998m) → Yamdrok Lake viewing platform → Lakeside road → Karola Glacier → Gyantse (stay), approx. 300km, 4.5-hour drive. D2: Gyantse → Nagarze → Puma Yumtso (5,010m) → Tuowa Village → Dalong Town (stay), approx. 180km, 3.5-hour drive. D3: Dalong Town → Samye Monastery → Tsetang → Yumbulagang → Return to Lhasa, approx. 260km, 4-hour drive. [Must-visit attractions] ⛺ Kamba La Pass: The best spot to overlook the entire Yamdrok Lake. The light is best around 10:00 AM, when the blue layers of the lake bays are most distinct. It is 0°C at the pass with strong winds; it gets foggy five minutes after getting out of the car, so plan accordingly. Yamdrok Lake: There are many unnamed scenic bends along the lakeside road. The abandoned Ritro Monastery stands alone on a small island in the lake and is more photogenic than the paid viewing platforms. Karola Glacier: A massive glacier tongue reaches right to the roadside. It is already covered in a thin layer of snow in autumn. It is a convenient stop when coming from the direction of Gyantse. A 20-minute visit is enough. This is a rare "zero-distance glacier" at an altitude of 4,000m. Puma Yumtso + Tuowa Village: The world's highest administrative village at an altitude of 5,010m. In late October, the lakeshore begins to freeze with thin ice. Blue ice paired with the Kula Kangri snow peaks makes for a great view, and Tuowa Village itself is also scenic. Samye Monastery: Built according to the layout of a Buddhist mandala. The four-colored Buddha halls on the top floor of the central main hall each occupy one side. A walk around helps you understand the cosmology of Tibetan Buddhism. The light is best after 3:00 PM. Yumbulagang: The first palace in Tibet. A small red and white castle on top of a hill. Learn the story of the "first Tibetan king" with thousands of acres of highland barley fields at your feet. [Must-try food] 🍩 Nagarze: Yamdrok dried fish (local lake fish, air-dried then pan-fried, served with highland barley wine) and yak meat buns. Gyantse town: Tibetan-style curry rice, pengbi (buckwheat jelly, sour and spicy, appetizing), and butter tea with tsampa. Average cost: 30–50 yuan per person. Tsetang: Yarlung Tibetan cuisine, potato buns, and yogurt. Average cost: 40–60 yuan per person. Finish your trip in Lhasa with sweet tea and Tibetan noodles for a filling meal at just over 10 yuan per person. [Accommodation guide] 🏨 Gyantse town (altitude 4,040m) is the most comfortable place to sleep on the entire route. There are hotels equipped with oxygen generators, costing 120–220 yuan per person. If you want to see the morning view of Palcho Monastery, stay near the old town. Dalong Town (by the shore of Puma Yumtso, approx. 5,000m) only has simple guesthouses. It is over -10°C at night, but you can see snow mountains and blue ice right outside your window. It costs 80–150 yuan per person. If you are sensitive to the cold, choose an oxygen-equipped room in Cuomei County or Nagarze town as a backup. Tsetang (altitude 3,700m) has many hotel options and is suitable for the last night. [Transportation guide] 🚌 From Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake, take the airport expressway and then turn onto National Highway 349. The Kamba La Pass section has continuous hairpin turns with a speed limit of 40 km/h. The shaded bends at the pass already have black ice this season, so do not brake hard when cornering. The road from Karola to Gyantse is easy to drive, but there are occasional falling rocks in the glacier area, so park away from the cliff walls when stopping on the side of the road. Fill up your gas tank before leaving Lhasa. There are gas stations in Nagarze, Gyantse, and Tsetang. There are no supplies for about 40–50km after passing Dalong Town in the direction of Puma Yumtso, so refuel whenever you see a station. The lakeside road of Yamdrok Lake has many sections with an 80 km/h speed limit and mobile speed cameras, so don't let the scenery make you drive too fast. [Tips] 🧡 Clothing: Today, Yamdrok Lake is 0–10°C, and the perceived temperature at Kamba La and Karola is 3–5°C lower. Dress in "fleece + thick jacket/light down jacket." For Puma Yumtso and Tuowa Village, dress for deep winter: down jacket + hat + gloves. A scarf is more effective than an extra layer when it's windy. Equipment: Sunscreen SPF50+ and sunglasses are a must (the lake water reflects light, doubling the intensity). Physical stamina varies on high-altitude sections, so carry 2 cans of portable oxygen (take a few puffs before taking photos at Puma Yumtso). The ice surface at Puma Yumtso is unstable during the initial freezing period; stay away from the ice edge when getting out of the car to take photos, and do not go onto the ice. Itinerary suggestions: The golden hours for Yamdrok Lake and Kula Kangri snow peaks are 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset. If it is cloudy, cultural sites like Samye Monastery and Yumbulagang are completely unaffected, so save the lake views for the next sunny morning. Shannan will be mostly sunny to cloudy over the next week, with occasional sleet on the southern edge, so keep half a day of flexibility in your itinerary. The steps at Yumbulagang are steep and high, so wear non-slip shoes and take your time going up and down.

You must visit Ngari. These four places are the most soul-stirring essence of Tibet. We don't recommend rushing through; slow down to truly understand the vastness of Ngari, the land in the sky. This route connects the four essential spots. You can refer to this map for the overall order of the locations. Mount Kailash Known as the sacred mountain at the center of the world, its pyramid-like peak is capped with white snow, with clouds swirling around it. The moment you see it in person, you will feel an inexplicable sense of inner peace. Don't force yourself to complete the full kora; it's over 50 km and physically demanding. For most travelers, viewing it from near Darchen is breathtaking enough. We recommend waking up early to see the "golden mountain" at sunrise, when the morning light hits the snow-capped peak, bathing it in golden-red hues—the atmosphere is incredible. After that, you can choose a short, light hike. If you get tired, just stop, catch your breath, and watch the prayer flags fluttering in the wind; there's no need to push yourself. Stay in Darchen for the night and get some rest; avoid staying up late. Lake Manasarovar One of the three holy lakes in Tibet, its water has incredible clarity. On sunny days, the lake surface displays rich layers of blue. On windless days, the lake becomes a giant mirror, perfectly reflecting the distant snow-capped mountains. A mountain and a lake gazing at each other from afar—this is the unique romance of Ngari. Don't just rush through for a quick photo. Find a high spot by the lake, take a slow walk, and sit quietly to watch the water. The afternoon light is soft and perfect for photography. If you're lucky enough to encounter a windless morning, the reflections will be even more beautiful. It is very windy by the lake, so be sure to wear a thick coat and don't stay out for too long without proper clothing. Zanda Earth Forest A geological wonder carved by millions of years of wind and rain, the entire landscape resembles the surface of Mars, with countless earth pillars and castles stretching to the horizon. The most beautiful moment in the Earth Forest is at sunset. We recommend arriving in the late afternoon to leave enough time to explore the viewing platforms at a leisurely pace. As the sun sinks, warm golden light sweeps across the gullies of the Earth Forest, turning the earthy-yellow mountains into a rich golden-orange and revealing the three-dimensional contrast of the ravines. Standing on the high ground and looking out, you'll see nothing but vast, boundless scenery. After watching the sunset, return to Zanda County for the night; the altitude there is relatively manageable, allowing for a good rest. Guge Kingdom Ruins These thousand-year-old ruins sit atop the Earth Forest. Once a glorious kingdom, now only caves, pagodas, and broken palace walls stacked against the mountain remain. When visiting, don't rush up the stairs; climbing at high altitude is physically demanding, so take a break every few steps. Walk slowly up the stairs, observing the remaining architecture and murals along the way. From the top, you can overlook the entire Earth Forest valley. We highly recommend visiting during dusk, when the sunset dyes the earthy-yellow ruins in warm gold. The silhouettes of the ruins are particularly evocative, and standing here, you can almost hear the wind from a thousand years ago. To get a direct feel for the atmosphere of these four major spots, check out this video. Comfortable, slow-paced itinerary D1 Arrive in Darchen, visit Lake Manasarovar in the afternoon, walk by the lake, return to Darchen in the evening to rest. No high-intensity activities. D2 Morning "golden mountain" view of Mount Kailash, optional short light hike, stay in Darchen. No rushing. D3 Drive from Darchen to Zanda, visit Zanda Earth Forest in the afternoon, wait for the sunset, stay in Zanda County at night. D4 Visit Guge Kingdom Ruins in the afternoon, climb slowly, wait for the dusk light, return to Zanda to rest after viewing. Helpful tips Ngari is at a high altitude, so move slowly throughout your trip and avoid running or jumping. A windbreaker, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are musts. Try to choose accommodation with a good oxygen supply, and shower less at night to avoid catching a cold. Don't try to cram every spot into your schedule. These four sacred mountains, holy lakes, and ancient ruins already capture the most moving aspects of Ngari. Once you've seen the snow mountains, lakes, and ruins of Ngari, you'll truly understand the saying: "Without Ngari, there is no Tibet."

D5 Sapu — Return to Lhasa Grasslands and wilderness along the way, snap photos with the same vibe as Mount Kailash, take a group photo on the roof of the off-road vehicle, and end the trip. 📍Long route option | 9-day Ngari loop Choose this if you want an in-depth exploration of Tibet! Visit Mount Kailash and the holy Lake Manasarovar, explore the Guge Kingdom that vanished overnight in the Zanda Earth Forest, encounter Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys on the road, and be awestruck by the wilderness starry sky. ✅Essential travel tips 1. Documents: Everest, Ngari, and Sapu are all border areas; get your border permit in advance. 2. Altitude: Prepare oxygen tanks, sunscreen, and thick jackets. The temperature difference between day and night is huge, so make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. 3. Travel method: We recommend small off-road groups of 4–6 people per vehicle. You can stop whenever you want, and the photography guide will help you take photos—this is the biggest difference from regular tour groups. Beds are limited during the peak season (July–September), so no last-minute bookings are accepted. Be sure to book in advance. 4. Outfits: Red long dresses, denim jackets, and red hats look great in photos with snow-capped mountains and lakes. 💡Food notes Tibetan noodles, sweet tea, and yak hot pot—savor them slowly on the streets of Lhasa and experience the taste of Tibet.

Many harbor a dream of the high plateau. Only after traveling across vast distances to reach these snowy heights do you realize that Tibet is more than just scenery—it is a spiritual cleansing. Upon arriving in Lhasa, you are greeted by brilliant sunshine. Slow your pace to acclimate to the altitude, then enter the Potala Palace. This thousand-year-old fortress stands atop Red Hill, its white walls, red halls, and golden roofs gleaming under the plateau sun. As you climb the stone steps, you will find halls filled with ancient murals and statues. Touching the thick walls, you can feel the weight of Tibet's thousand-year history. Looking out from the palace, the entire city of Lhasa unfolds across the valley, framed by rolling mountains in the distance, while the wind carries a pure, solemn air. Descend to the Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street. The Jokhang Temple houses the life-sized statue of the 12-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha and is a sacred site for countless Tibetan pilgrims. On the kora path, believers walk slowly in a clockwise direction, holding prayer wheels and chanting softly—a silent yet powerful display of faith. Surrounding the temple is Barkhor Street, lined with traditional Tibetan houses. The air is filled with the scent of Tibetan incense and yak butter, while shops selling Tibetan jewelry and souvenirs are tucked away in every corner. Locals and tourists walk side by side, blending ancient traditions with modern life. Leaving Lhasa, head toward Yamdrok Yumtso, commonly known as Yamdrok Lake. The mountain road winds upward, and as you cross the pass, a vast blue lake suddenly comes into view. The water resembles a giant sapphire ribbon winding through the mountains, shifting in shades of blue with the changing light. The wind ripples across the surface, while snow-capped mountains stand silently in the distance. Where the water meets the sky, the scene is so serene it leaves you speechless. Continue your journey to Namtso. The Nyainqentanglha Mountains guard this sacred lake, its deep blue waters stretching to the horizon. Along the shore lies the vast Northern Tibetan grassland, dotted with grazing cattle and sheep. Standing by the lake, watching the white clouds drift across the water, you feel small yet peaceful in the face of such grand nature. If you have extra time, visit Nyingchi. Unlike the vast, rugged landscapes of northern Tibet, Nyingchi is known as the "Jiangnan of Tibet." The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is deep and magnificent, with the distant Namcha Barwa Peak often shrouded in mist. The Lulang Forest is dense with spruce trees, and pastures dotted with traditional Tibetan wooden houses create a lush, green landscape—a rare, gentle sight on the plateau. Along the way, you will see Mani stone piles and colorful prayer flags everywhere. As the flags flutter in the wind, each movement is a prayer. If you meet local Tibetans, a bowl of warm butter tea and a bite of chewy yak meat—simple and rustic—will reveal the unique warmth of the plateau. The beauty of Tibet lies in the magnificence of its snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes, and grasslands, as well as the depth of its faith, culture, and daily life. On this journey, as you take in the plateau's landscapes, you also learn to slow down, respect nature, and honor faith. The winds of the snowy plateau will carry away your worries, and its light will remain deep in your memories. Practical travel tips 1. Altitude acclimation: Avoid strenuous exercise and do not bathe immediately for the first 2 days after arriving in Lhasa to prevent colds. For mild headaches, rest and take glucose supplements. If you experience severe altitude sickness, seek medical attention immediately; do not try to tough it out. 2. Documents: Carry your ID card with you at all times. If traveling to border areas such as Mount Everest or Ngari, you must obtain a border permit in advance. 3. Sun protection and warmth: UV radiation on the plateau is extremely strong, so bring SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, so pack a warm jacket even in summer. 4. Religious etiquette: Photography is prohibited inside most temples. Maintain silence when entering, do not step on the threshold, and respect local customs. 5. Suggested route: Lhasa city (Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street) > Yamdrok Yumtso > Namtso. If you have more time, you can add Nyingchi and Mount Everest to your itinerary.

9 photos aren't enough to capture it all 😭 I have to give a huge shout-out to everyone on the team!! Background: Two of us visiting Tibet for the first time. At first, we planned to do all the research ourselves, but there are just so many routes in Tibet. After two months of looking, we were still completely lost. We looked into other guides, but because it was a long trip, we had to sign contracts and buy insurance plans. The contract terms were a mess, and checking them line by line was exhausting. In the end, we decided to book a tour through Trip.com, which really saved us so much time! The team mainly consisted of three guides: Sumu, who handled pre-trip planning and hotel bookings; Jiaojiao, who answered any questions we had during the trip; and Yu, who led the team. During our trip, we ran into heavy snow in the Ali region. If we had stuck to the original plan, we might have been snowed in on the road. When we saw the news and got really anxious, the three guides actively consulted and immediately provided backup plans A, B, and C. Plus, on our first day in Lhasa, Yu firmly insisted that we get our border permits sorted out. Because of that, we were able to successfully reroute to Mount Everest and Peiku Co. We also got lucky with great weather, making these the best days of our trip! I feel like if they hadn't helped us figure things out, we would have been oxygen-deprived and clueless, probably just stuck in our hotel wasting our precious vacation time 😭! When we went to chase the golden sunrise on the mountain, the hotel shuttle couldn't make it at the last minute. As time was ticking away, we asked for help in the group, and Yu arrived in 3 minutes to take us from the hotel straight to the visitor center. We found a bus there, so we successfully caught the sunrise. There were so many times we felt the agility, professionalism, and attentiveness of these three guides! Every time we ran into an issue and asked for help, they responded super fast! Amazing! Besides Mount Everest and Peiku Co, we did the Ali small loop, bypassing the snowed-in areas and Mount Kailash. We visited about 1–3 attractions each day, plus countless views along the way. Yu drove very steadily without even needing navigation, and he was very accommodating of our request to start late so we could sleep in. We seemed to be late every day, leaving Yu waiting downstairs for us—so sorry about that 🙏🏻 (but Yu's smooth driving skills completely made up for our late starts, hahaha). The drone shots turned out great too, so satisfied!! Plus, having all the attraction tickets, hotels, car fees, and gas costs included really saved us a lot of trouble 😭🙏🏻 so touched.

The Guge ruins are located on a hill in Zanda County. The entrance fee is 65 yuan, and a round-trip shuttle bus costs 20 yuan. Taking the bus up the mountain is highly recommended to save energy. From the red-walled temple complex at the foot of the mountain, ascend the thousand-year-old stone steps. The murals in the meditation caves still retain their colors. The climb to the summit takes about 40 to 60 minutes, at an altitude of 3,800 to 4,000 meters. Walk slowly, don't rush. From the summit, you can overlook the earthen forest valley, where the earth resembles solidified waves. The best lighting is between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, making it easier to take good photos of the earthen forest and ancient castles. After descending the mountain, return to the county town for a bowl of hot Tibetan noodles, then visit Toling Monastery, only one kilometer from the town. Its murals are of extremely high historical value. A windproof jacket is essential, as the morning wind is biting. Also, bring an oxygen cylinder, as climbing mountains is more physically demanding than on flat ground. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

I always thought Nyingchi was only worth visiting for the peach blossoms in spring, but once I arrived, I realized autumn in Nyingchi is a hidden gem. The water of the Nyang River is crystal blue, and the trees on both banks layer out from green to yellow to red. The chances of seeing Mount Namjagbarwa are also much higher than in summer. However, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme; you can wear short sleeves for photos during the day, but you'll need a fleece as soon as the sun goes down. ☀️ Weather & Packing Daytime temperatures are 5–18°C, dropping to single digits at night, with a diurnal temperature range of up to 15°C. It's mostly sunny with clear air, and the chances of seeing Namjagbarwa are higher than in summer. The UV radiation on the plateau is extremely strong, so wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. ✔️ Quick-dry long-sleeve base layer (avoid cotton; it gets cold and clammy when you sweat) ✔️ Fleece or thin sweatshirt as a mid-layer ✔️ Windproof shell jacket as an outer layer—essential for blocking the wind when viewing Namjagbarwa and at Sejila Pass ✔️ Long pants for easy walking on boardwalks and in canyons ✔️ Non-slip hiking shoes (the Nanyi Valley boardwalk is damp year-round, and regular sneakers are slippery) ✔️ Hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and lip balm—don't forget any of these 📍 Itinerary 📍 Day 1: Basum Lake The emerald lake reflects the snow-capped mountains. There's a thousand-year-old temple on Zhaxi Island in the center of the lake, and the Jieba Village viewing platform offers great panoramic shots. Return to Bayi Town in the afternoon to stay overnight and enjoy a stone pot chicken dinner to warm up. 📍 Day 2: Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon + Suosong Village Follow the canyon to see the river and snow-capped mountains in the same frame. Suosong Village is a great spot to view Namjagbarwa; whether you catch a glimpse depends on luck, but the village itself is worth exploring at a leisurely pace. 📍 Day 3: Lulang Forest + Sejila Mountain Cross Sejila Pass for a distant view of the snow-capped mountain range. In autumn, the leaves in Lulang Forest begin to change color. Enjoy the alpine pastures and Tibetan-style houses, and have stone pot chicken for lunch to warm up. 📍 Day 4: Nanyi Valley → Departure Take a walk along the primeval forest boardwalk in Nanyi Valley. The air is fantastic. Explore for half a day before heading back. 📝 Travel Tips ❶ The average altitude of Nyingchi is about 3,100 meters. The oxygen content is much higher than in Lhasa, so most people don't experience altitude sickness, but avoid running or jumping—take it slow. ❷ Afternoon showers are frequent, so bring a raincoat. Try to view Namjagbarwa in the morning; the clouds get too thick in the afternoon, and you won't see anything. ❸ The scenic spots are far apart, so chartering a car is convenient. It takes 1.5–2 hours one way from Bayi Town to Basum Lake and the Grand Canyon. ❹ Lulang stone pot chicken is a must-try. The soup is fresh and warming—perfect for a cool autumn day. ❺ If you want to see Namjagbarwa, staying in Suosong Village is convenient. You can see the snow-capped mountains as soon as you open your window in the morning, saving you the commute. ❻ Nyingchi is more humid than Lhasa in autumn, so bring moisturizer, though it's not as dry as Ngari.

If you are visiting the Guge Kingdom ruins for the first time and are worried about your return plans being disrupted by road conditions or unexpected changes, it is best to schedule the main Guge tour for the middle day, leaving the days before and after for Toling Town and the Zanda Earth Forest. This way, you won't need to make Guge a mandatory stop on your return day. For accommodation, start by basing yourself in Toling Town, where the county government and main tourist resources are concentrated. Zhaburang Village is located at the foot of the Guge Kingdom ruins and has previously hosted tourists in guesthouses, but be sure to confirm whether they are currently accepting guests and how to arrange arrival and departure before deciding to stay in the village. Day 1 | Settle in Toling Town, visit Toling Monastery first After arriving in Toling Town, settle into your accommodation and keep your plans for the day within the town. If you have the time and energy, visit Toling Monastery. The main tourist attractions in Zanda include Toling Monastery, the Guge Kingdom ruins, and the Zanda Earth Forest. Focus on the monastery itself; there is no need to rush into Guge on the same day. Eat in Toling Town and get some rest to ensure you have a full day of sightseeing for the next day. Day 2 | In-depth tour of the Guge Kingdom ruins Make the Guge Kingdom ruins the only major destination for the day. The Guge capital was built into the mountainside and features historical remains such as caves and murals. Follow the on-site access and guidance while exploring, and allow yourself plenty of time to observe the ruins. Zhaburang Village is located at the foot of the ruins; if you have confirmed accommodation and plan to stay in the village, you can check in nearby after your tour. If you are still staying in Toling Town, return to the town to rest after the tour and do not add any Earth Forest excursions. Day 3 | Zanda Earth Forest, plan based on your return schedule If you have plenty of time for your return trip and your transportation is confirmed, spend the morning at the Zanda Earth Forest. The Earth Forest is vast with rugged terrain; choose a section that fits your schedule rather than trying to see it all at once. Afterward, return to Toling Town to pick up your luggage and depart according to your confirmed transportation. If your return time is early or your connections are uncertain, skip the Earth Forest and depart directly from Toling Town, leaving the entire day for your return journey. Before you go, check local official channels for opening hours and visiting requirements for the ruins and monastery, and confirm your transportation arrangements for the day.

Driving into Zada, the landscape changes in an instant. Millions of years of wind and rain have sculpted the Zada Earth Forest. Endless peaks of yellow earth rise and fall, crisscrossed by gullies, resembling a giant castle rising from the ground. When the sun hits at an angle, the interplay of light and shadow across the earth forest creates a desolate yet majestic scene that instantly captivates you. Continue on to the Guge Kingdom ruins. The ancient fortress, built into the mountainside, rises in tiers, with caves, pagodas, and crumbling walls scattered across the slopes. A once-prosperous dynasty was buried in the dust of history overnight. As you walk through the ruins and gaze at the surviving murals, imagining the incense and bustle of a thousand years ago, you are left with a profound sense of the passage of time. Standing at the top and looking out, with the earth forest surrounding Guge, the vastness of the landscape and the weight of history are overwhelming. Wait for the sunset over the earth forest in the evening. The setting sun dyes the entire landscape a golden red—majestic yet gentle—making it a highlight of Zada that you cannot miss. Following Trip.com's recommendation, I chose this 10-day, 9-night private tour of Tibet's Ngari region and Everest Base Camp. Although the trip has ended, I'm still reminiscing and couldn't wait to share this unforgettable experience. I had a bit of a cold when I set off, and unfortunately, heavy snow closed National Highway 219, requiring last-minute itinerary changes. Thankfully, my Trip.com travel consultant, Jiaojiao, checked in on me thoughtfully throughout the journey and answered all my questions. When we had to change the itinerary, she and Haohan quickly planned a new route for me. Even though I didn't make it to my original dream destination, the new route was full of beautiful scenery and constant surprises. Our driver, Mr. Fan, was incredibly attentive. He drove steadily and efficiently over hundreds of kilometers each day, planned our time well, and made sure we had a relaxing and enjoyable trip. This was an amazing experience! I will definitely return to Tibet for the destinations I haven't reached yet! Finally, a few tips for everyone: make sure you're in good health before heading to Tibet and try to recover from any colds beforehand; communicate with your travel consultant promptly if weather changes affect your route; and choosing a reliable team is crucial to ensure both safety and a great experience.

Bamucuo (also known as Bamucuo) is a niche, free highland hidden gem in northern Tibet. It offers a relaxing experience and is very photogenic, making it perfect for a quick stop along your route. 📅 Best time to visit May–Oct: Mild climate, ice-free lake, vibrant lake colors, green grasslands, and blooming wildflowers. This is the golden period for photography and road trips. Nov–Apr: The lake freezes to form a unique blue ice landscape. There are very few tourists, but temperatures drop to -20°C. Infrastructure is limited, making it suitable only for deep travelers seeking ultimate tranquility. 🚗 Transportation guide There is no direct public transportation to Bamucuo. The main ways to get there are: Self-driving (highly recommended): Depart from Lhasa, take G109 to Damxung, then turn onto G317 toward Bangoin. The total distance is about 300 km, taking 4.5–5.5 hours. The entire route is paved, and standard cars can pass through easily. Chartered car/carpooling: Charter a car from Lhasa or Nagqu. Choose an SUV or minivan. Drivers are familiar with the route and can flexibly connect surrounding attractions, making it suitable for groups. Tips: Some sections of the lake area have no mobile signal, so be sure to download offline maps in advance. You must carry snow chains if traveling in winter. 🎫 Basic information Address: Qinglong Township, Bangoin County, Nagqu City, Tibet Autonomous Region Opening hours: 08:00–19:00. Accessible all day Admission: Free. No entry fees Recommended duration: 1–2 hours. No need to rush; just take your time and enjoy the lake view 📸 Key photo spots Lakeside pasture: In July and August, the lakeside is covered in purple-red Artemisia flowers. You can capture reflections of yaks drinking water by the lake, creating a great atmosphere. G317 roadside viewpoint: You can overlook the entire color-changing lake without leaving the main road, easily capturing the effect of a highland "palette". Lakeside shallows: Drive along the dirt road to the shore to see the layers of lake water transitioning from light green to deep blue up close, with almost no tourists around. 🗺️ Classic routes Bamucuo is a must-visit node on the northern shore of Namtso and the Northern Ali route. Here are two recommended, well-established routes: Namtso + Bamucuo 2-day route: Day 1: Lhasa → Bangoin County (stay in an oxygen-supplied hotel to acclimatize); Day 2: Bangoin → Bamucuo → Holy Elephant Heaven Gate → Damxung → Lhasa. No backtracking. Northern Ali route finale: Bangoin → Bamucuo → Namtso → Nagenla Pass → Nyainqentanglha Mountain Viewpoint → Lhasa. See the two sister lakes of northern Tibet in one go. ⚠️ Highland travel tips The lake is at an altitude of 4,555 meters, nearly 1,000 meters higher than Lhasa. Move slowly upon arrival, and prepare portable oxygen and glucose in advance to prevent altitude sickness. The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is extreme. Even in summer, bring a thick windproof jacket. The wind is strong and UV rays are intense by the lake, so take sun protection measures. Respect local herder customs, do not cross pasture fences at will, and take all trash with you to protect the highland ecosystem.

Suitable for those who can arrive in Zanda by Friday night and have only one full day to explore on the weekend. Stay in the same place for two nights, focus on the Guge ruins on Saturday, and return on Sunday. Avoid cramming a short trip by rushing between different areas. Day 1 | Stay in Tsaparang on Friday night After arriving in Zanda, stay directly in the Tsaparang village area. The village is right at the foot of the Guge ruins, and there are local guesthouses. If you can book a suitable room, it will save on transportation to and from the ruins the next day. Eat dinner at your accommodation or ask about nearby options, then rest—don't plan any more sightseeing. If you cannot find suitable accommodation, choose a place in Zanda County and confirm transportation to and from the ruins for the next day with your host in advance. Day 2 | Dedicate Saturday to the Guge Kingdom ruins After breakfast, head to the Guge Kingdom ruins. Follow the open routes from the foot of the mountain upwards to explore the caves, palace sites, and watchtowers built into the mountainside. The ruins are vast, so don't rush through the murals and architectural remains just to check them off your list. The White Temple, Red Temple, and Small Scripture Hall contain recorded murals; whether you can enter depends on on-site arrangements. The altitude is high here, so pace yourself while climbing and bring water. For lunch, you can bring a light meal or return to Tsaparang village to eat and rest, then decide based on your energy levels whether to continue walking the designated trails. Return to your accommodation in the evening and have dinner in the village; don't make a detour to the county seat. Day 3 | Sunday check-out and return After breakfast, check out and leave Zanda according to your confirmed transportation arrangements. If staying in Tsaparang, arrange for the driver to pick you up at the village entrance; if staying in the county seat, depart from there. Do not add the Earth Forest or Tholing Monastery to your itinerary today to avoid compromising your return travel connections just to see one more spot. Saving money mainly relies on not changing accommodation for two nights and only planning for the Guge area on your full day of sightseeing. You can inquire about prices and whether meals are included at Tsaparang village guesthouses in advance. There is no reliable schedule information for transportation between Zanda and the village, so ask about pick-up/drop-off or chartered car arrangements when booking your room. Before you set off, check the scenic area's opening status, trail conditions, and road conditions through the Zanda Culture and Tourism Bureau.

This 3-day, 2-night trip to the Guge Kingdom ruins is perfect for those with limited time who want to focus their budget and energy on the ancient city. The itinerary features the Guge ruins as the sole main experience. By staying in Zhaburang Village at the foot of the ruins, you save on costs and travel time associated with visiting other attractions around Zanda. Day 1 | Arrive in Zanda, stay at the foot of the ruins Experience: After arriving, settle into your accommodation in Zhaburang Village to ensure you have a full day for exploring the Guge ruins tomorrow First, arrive in Toling Town, then head to Zhaburang Village to check in. Zhaburang Village is located at the foot of the Guge Kingdom ruins and offers local guesthouses. Choosing to stay here allows you to focus your trip on Guge without needing to schedule an extra day for surrounding attractions. Do not add visits to Toling Monastery or the Zanda Earth Forest to today's itinerary. You can inquire about meals and accommodation with local hosts in Zhaburang Village; confirm availability and meal arrangements before you depart to finalize your booking. Day 2 | Dedicate your time to the Guge Kingdom ruins Experience: Take your time exploring the city walls, caves, watchtowers, and pagodas within the ruins, with a special focus on the murals in the White Temple, Red Temple, and the Small Scripture Hall Travel from Zhaburang Village to the Guge Kingdom ruins; this is the only main attraction scheduled for today. The ruins are located within the Zanda Earth Forest, with city walls, caves, watchtowers, and pagodas forming the remains of the ancient city. The White Temple, Red Temple, and Small Scripture Hall contain murals, so you can focus your visit on these sites without needing to squeeze in other locations. The scenic area provides services such as ticket sales, visitor information, dining, and security. Check opening hours and tour arrangements through the scenic area or local official channels before you depart. On-site, you can ask staff about which areas are open for visitation that day. Bring water and comfortable walking shoes, and allow plenty of time to explore the ruins. Day 3 | Return to Toling Town from Zhaburang Village Experience: Pack your bags and leave Zanda via Toling Town, dedicating your final day to your actual travel arrangements Depart from Zhaburang Village to return to Toling Town, then continue with your own travel arrangements for the return trip. If your accommodation can assist with luggage storage, confirm this before planning any activities for the day. This budget-friendly route does not include the Zanda Earth Forest or other attractions, preventing your return day from becoming an extra day of rushing.

This 3-day Guge Kingdom ruins tour is perfect for those with three days who want to understand the ancient city without rushing every day: dedicate a full day to Guge, and use the other two days for Toling Town, Zanda Earth Forest, and other nearby areas. Day 1 | Toling Town and temple ruins In the morning, settle into Toling Town, then visit Toling Monastery to see the temple architecture and the surrounding stupas, caves, and temple ruins to understand the history of the Zanda area. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll around Toling Town and observe the settlement and river valley environment. Toling Town is located in the Guge Kingdom ruins area, making it a suitable base for these three days. For meals, you can choose local restaurants in town; check if they are open before you head out. In the evening, return to town to rest and save your energy for the next day. Prioritize accommodation in Toling Town for easier access to Guge and the Earth Forest. When booking, confirm their reception status and arrangements for visiting the scenic spots. Day 2 | In-depth exploration of Guge Kingdom ruins In the morning, head to the Guge Kingdom ruins and focus your energy on the site itself. The Guge Royal Palace is built into the mountain. Follow the open routes to observe the layered ruins, caves, palaces, and temples, and take your time to see how the architecture unfolds along the mountain terrain. In the afternoon, continue exploring the Guge Kingdom ruins. Follow the designated trails as indicated on-site, and do not leave the tour area to add extra stops. The terrain is uneven, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, bring water, and allow enough time for walking and sightseeing. In the evening, return to Toling Town to rest. Focus your activities on Guge for the day and do not add distant attractions. Check official channels for opening status and on-site tour requirements before you depart. Day 3 | Zanda Earth Forest and departure In the morning, head to the Zanda Earth Forest to see the rugged earth forest landscape. The earth forest is distributed in areas like the Zanda Canyon. When visiting, stick to accessible and permitted viewing locations for the day, and do not drive or walk into closed areas along the way. In the afternoon, if time and road conditions permit, you may choose to visit the Piyang Dongga Cave ruins as another cultural stop. Like Guge, it is a ruin site around Zanda; whether you visit depends on actual opening and road conditions. Recent official announcements indicate that some road sections may have snow, standing water, or slippery conditions. Follow designated trails and pay attention to on-site safety information. In the evening, depart from the Zanda area according to your travel plans. If you need to return to Toling Town to pick up your luggage, remember to factor the return time into your itinerary for the day.

Shishapangma Peak sits on the border between Nyalam County and Gyirong County in Shigatse, at the heart of the central Himalayas. It is also an important part of the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve. The mountain consists of three closely connected snow peaks with a pyramidal, steep ridge. The north slope stretches for kilometers with ice towers carved into a breathtaking crystalline ice garden, and intersecting glacier patterns create a powerful visual impact. In Tibetan legend it is a guardian mountain, meaning “a place of severe climate and abundant resources.” 📍Core elevations Shishapangma main peak 8,027m; regular roadside viewing platform 4,700m; Peiku Tso lake surface 4,590m; north slope trekking base camp 5,120m. Fee details (easy to confuse) 1. Roadside sightseeing is free: the national highway viewpoint, the Peiku Tso lakeside, and the summit lookout have no entrance or viewing fees, and are open 24 hours 2. Voluntary fees for deep trekking: entering the core of the protected area via the north slope on foot is CNY 180 per person. Vehicle entry fee is CNY 400 per vehicle. These are for photo stops only 3. Mandatory documents: border pass + ID card, both required. You can apply for free at your place of household registration; in the remarks write Shigatse Nyalam County, Gyirong County. Border checkpoints along the route perform strict checks and will turn you back if you have no documents 4. Optional charges: prayer flags at the lake and herder parking fees are CNY 20. There is no mandatory guide service or bundled selling 🚗Getting there 1. Self-drive (most recommended) Search navigation for "Peiku Tso Shishapangma viewing platform" and take G219 Ali south line, which is fully paved; ordinary family cars can pass easily. Only the local village dirt roads require slowing down—there are many curves, so watch for oncoming traffic. Typical route: Shigatse → Gangga Guandi Temple → Gawu La pass → Mount Everest → Shishapangma Peak → Gyirong town, following the road without backtracking. Most mountain sections have no cell signal, so download offline maps in advance and fill your tank before departure 2. Private hire / carpool (best for those who prefer not to drive) From Shigatse city, a 4-day G219 Ali south line loop with a private car for 4 people costs CNY 1,200–1,500 per vehicle, about CNY 300 per person. Local experienced drivers know border road conditions and landslide spots in the rainy season, will stop at the best photo locations, and you avoid high-altitude long-distance driving yourself, making this the safest option 💯Recommendation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ngari South-South + Central-North mini loop Day 2📍Baimalin Lake counter-clockwise loop The weather recently hasn't been cooperating. I originally thought just seeing Kula Kangri would be enough to be thankful for🙏 But when I arrived at the Baimalin Lake parking lot, it turned out to be a sunny day! My luck was incredible✨ Kula Kangri in the morning was top-notch! Standing on the small pavilion on the right, the three peaks of Karjiang and Kula Kangri were completely unobstructed! The mist swirling in the middle added an ethereal feel~ The biggest surprise was that the triangular snow mountain on the far left, which looks just like the King's Peak, also showed its face🏔️ Once again, I was so moved by the magnificence of the snow mountains that I wanted to cry😭 That kind of soul-stirring emotion, it was just so stunning and beautiful! Everything was worth it!! 📸 After checking in at the same photo spot as Li Xian at the viewing pavilion, Xiao Yang chose to give up due to altitude sickness, so I set off alone! The first half of the counter-clockwise loop is really easy to walk! The closer I got to the lake, the more I realized the beauty of Baimalin Lake. That transparent blue-green lake surface clearly reflected the Karjiang snow mountain. Every shot I took was a stunning photo🏞️ When I reached the center point of the lake loop, I felt the snow mountains were so close they were within reach, as if I could walk to the summit in just a few steps! The second half started to test my willpower... The constantly ascending sections were simply crushing😫 In the last 3 km, my energy was nearly exhausted, and I had to stop and rest every few steps. For a long stretch, it was just me and a herd of yaks. Besides the sound of the wind, all I could hear was my own racing heartbeat💓 But!! I successfully completed the counter-clockwise loop in the end! I was even an hour ahead of the original plan! ⚠️ Tips: 📍Baimalin Lake is located in Se Township, Lhozhag County, Shannan City, open all year round 📍Kula Kangri Snow Mountain is located in Zhari Township, Lhozhag County, Shannan City, open all year round 📍Shalang King's Peak is located in Yare Township, Zhongba County, Shigatse City Without taking a single puff of oxygen, alone at an altitude of 4,500+ meters, completing an 11 km plateau hike in 6.5 hours—I'm pretty awesome, right!💪
