Blue Ice Cave in Iceland
Blue ice caves are natural caves formed inside glaciers. When the glacier melts, the water flow erodes the ice layer at the bottom of the glacier, creating space. The ice inside the glacier absorbs light of various colors, and because the penetration power of blue light waves is stronger, what we see now is blue. Blue ice caves are usually the most spectacular during the winter freezing period and early spring thaw.

Ice Hiking Adventure at Vatnajokull
and my last treat for ice was at #vatnajökull where i had my unforgettable glacier hike on Iceland's largest glacier and Europe's largest glacier mass (area of roughly 8300 sq. km). I was also introduced to using crampon & ice axe for the first time.
My advice, to save all the hassle just hop on the tour bus from Reykjavik & they'll bring you to the Skaftafell entrance. You are now ready to embark on a fascinating hike among the glacier tongue! Say hello to the majestic ice sculptures, ridges, deep sinkholes (Moulin) & "dirt cone"- pyramid form of ashes from volcanic eruptions

Exploring the inside of a glacier is one incredible experience. Here the entrance is close to the surface illuminating the cave.
Hverir is a truly otherworldly experience that stands out even in a country known for its unique natural landscapes. We went to this area this August and this geothermal area is a vivid testament to the raw power of the earth beneath our feet, offering you an intense sensory experience.
As you approach Hverir, the first thing that hits you is the strong smell of sulfur. This may be off-putting to some, but it’s a small price to pay for what you’re about to witness. The landscape is surreal—an expanse of bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant mineral deposits in shades of red, yellow, and orange. The ground hisses and boils, with steam rising from cracks in the earth, creating a scene that feels almost alien.
I declare! This is the coolest experience in Iceland!
Glacier hiking + blue ice cave is definitely one of the coolest experiences in Iceland.
🌹 'How to participate' You can sign up for this project in both Solheimajokull and Vatnajokull.
If you plan to experience it, remember to book online in advance, especially in winter when tickets are very tight, and Iceland requires you to join a local legal travel agency to sign up for the glacier and blue ice cave.
🌹 'Experience content' You can just participate in glacier hiking, or add a blue ice cave adventure. It depends on your preference. Personally, I suggest glacier hiking + blue ice cave for a richer experience. If you are a hiking enthusiast, you can try the extra-long (5h) hiking project.
Basically, the guide will lead everyone to hike on the glacier for a while, then go to the blue ice cave, give a brief introduction, take photos, and then return the same way. The content is simple, but the scenery you can admire up close is really superb
🌹 'Wear and equipment' The glacier hiking company will provide the corresponding hiking equipment, usually crampons are essential, as well as safety helmets and headlamps, and some routes will also provide ice axes to assist in hiking. You just need to pay attention to dress lightly and keep warm (especially the legs) - when the weather is good, glacier hiking is not even cold😊
In short, glacier hiking + blue ice cave is definitely the experience I recommend the most, and it's something you must try when you come to Iceland~
2024 latest! Best vacation destinations in March
March is a relatively hot season for travel, without extreme heat or crowded crowds, it is most suitable to go abroad for travel.
【Greece】
The two parishes in Greece, on the eve of Easter every year, both churches will hold a competition to "shoot" at the spire of the other church, called rouketopolemos starting around 8 pm (nearby churches start shooting thousands of fireworks, causing the town's sound to rise with comets and rocket explosions, the scene is very spectacular)
【Canada】
At the end of March, cherry blossoms gradually bloom in Vancouver, until they turn this city into a beautiful garden. Every year in April, a grand cherry blossom festival is held here. Riding a bike under the blooming cherry blossoms is really wonderful.
【Morocco】
In the spring of Marrakech, the blue and white town of Chefchaouen is decorated with flowers like a poem, visiting is like being in a fairy tale world of One Thousand and One Nights.
【Turkey】
The spring in Istanbul is like a melodious poem, with suitable temperature, cherry blossoms blooming on the side of the Bosphorus Strait, the blend of ancient and modern atmosphere is impressive.
【Iceland】
The early spring in Iceland is the ideal season to capture the spectacle of ice and fire. Stepping on the crystal clear blue ice cave, driving on the snow-covered wilderness, watching the aurora dance in the sky, and finally washing away the fatigue in the geothermal hot spring, a magical journey awaits you.
God knows how wonderful the Mýrdalsjökull ice cave is
It's so beautiful that words fail me. We drove a special vehicle to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and saw the naturally formed large blue ice cave in the rare good weather! Each layer is a different degree of glacier layers stacked on top of each other, and then eroded and melted by the stream flowing below, gradually forming the current hollow shape. I admire the magic of nature! It's too shocking! Standing in front of the big ice cave and looking at the horizon in the distance, I have a feeling of sudden enlightenment. It's much more mysterious than the round window in Kyoto, Japan! Words fail me!!!
Winter in Iceland is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed
Winter in Iceland is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I spent two weeks capturing and narrating the beautiful scenery of the journey through my lens.
ROAD-TRIPPING IN ICELAND? DON’T MISS THIS!
Hverir, nestled in the northeastern region of Iceland, is a geological wonder often overshadowed by its more renowned neighbors. This underrated spot boasts a surreal landscape dominated by steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and vibrant mineral-rich pools. The area's stark contrast to the surrounding barren terrain creates an otherworldly ambiance that captivates adventurous souls seeking a unique experience.
Visitors to Hverir are greeted by an ethereal symphony of hissing steam and gurgling mud, providing a sensory immersion into the Earth's geothermal activity. The dynamic geothermal features, shaped by the intense subterranean forces, create a mesmerizing tableau of colors and textures. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow, caused by mineral deposits, paint an artistically compelling backdrop against the stark Icelandic landscape.
One of Hverir's standout attractions is the colossal Hverfjall volcano, an imposing structure that adds a dramatic element to the area. Adventurous hikers can embark on a journey to the volcano's rim, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding geothermal wonders and the vast expanse of the Myvatn region.
Despite its captivating allure, Hverir remains a hidden gem, often overshadowed by the more famous attractions in Iceland. This underrated spot beckons to those willing to venture off the beaten path, promising an immersive encounter with the Earth's raw power and a visual feast for those seeking a deeper connection with Iceland's natural wonders.

What brings you thousands of miles to Iceland in winter? Isn't it for this unique blue ice scene? 😍😍😍 Only by experiencing it in person will you know that everything is worth it. 😀😀😀
A trip that only happens in winter every year, put on your claws, step on the ice, and embark on this blue ice cave journey in the middle of the crunch. Be sure to wear warm and keep warm. 🤓🤓🤓
🌟Highlights:
Only when you come here will you know that the blue ice cave is divided into black, white and blue. You can see this unique landscape of ten thousand years of freezing from the ice surface. It's really worth the ticket price. There is no such place elsewhere. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
The End of the Earth: A Wonderful Journey in Iceland
Iceland's scenery is indeed unique, its own unique tourism resources and characteristics make it extremely charming and attractive, especially in winter, there are many tourists following the aurora. The photos here are of the blue ice cave, the glacier lake and the diamond beach. You can see its unique natural landscape and beautiful environment. It is very suitable for self-driving travel, of course, you need to consider the impact of ice and snow weather and the limitation of viewing time due to polar night in winter.
Wow, self-driving in Iceland is really great
Car rental is convenient, parking at attractions is also very convenient, and the road conditions are good, you can stop to enjoy the scenery at any time. A total of one day in Reykjavik at the beginning and end, you can see churches, streets and buy souvenirs. Food recommendations include Sjávargrillið Icelandic lobster taco, freshly caught fish with salad and special sauce every day, and the specially recommended Fine rice for Chinese stomach.
Day2's itinerary includes snorkeling in Thingvellir National Park, park sightseeing, Gesir Geyser, Golden Waterfall and Volcano Lake. There is a best hot dog called Pylsuvagninn in the town of Selfoss. I was surprised to see the aurora when I went to the supermarket that night! It's more shocking than what I saw in Norway .
Day3's itinerary includes Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Black Sand Beach. Be sure to wear waterproof clothes and pants. If you go forward from Seljalandsfoss, you will see more spectacular niche waterfalls. The black sand beach looks lonely on cloudy days, and it looks like a scene in a sci-fi movie when you go out on a sunny day near sunset🌈.
😎Day4's itinerary includes Diamond Beach and Glacier Blue Ice Cave (Glacier Hiking). For details on Diamond Beach, see the previous post. The guide was very good during the glacier hike, took us to the blue ice cave, and created many experience projects on the glacier.
Day5 originally planned to drive to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, but decided to go horse riding at the last minute! Icelandic horses🐴 are very gentle, and there are non-mainstream oblique bangs. The whole journey is really full of surprises and exclamation!
Icelandic Braveheart Game Series Three
✙Iceland's winter can make you realize how precious sunshine is~
✙Diamond Beach, girls' favorite~
✙Jiegu Salon Iceberg Lake, if lucky, you can see cute seals~
✙Still eating despite being so fat~
✙Astronauts who are going to the moon will be sent here first to experience the feeling of the moon in advance~
✙Famous Blue Ice Cave~
✙Local characteristic thatched church, does it look like a hobbit's small house
✙Strange and eerie cemetery demon tree~
✙The small cemetery next to the chapel~ Visiting at night may cause disturbance~
This blue hole is located in the scenic area of Mi Lake. Remember the mysterious cave where Jon Snow & Ygritte was playing in The Game of Rights? Its here. Grjtagj used to be a thriving bath.
However, a lot of geological activities occurred in 1975-1984, causing the water temperature in the cave to rise so high that it was not suitable for bathing. Every year, the Icelandic government will announce the rising temperature of the hole. It is said that it has reached 43 degrees now. It is a bit hot for the hot springs, because I saw a German family come here to make hot springs. Almost only the edge part can enter the water. Its really hot.
Don't know how the scene of "The Game of Rights" was filmed at the time?
TIPs: Grjtagj has two holes to climb in. The inside is figured out, but climbing up and down is a bit dangerous. The advice of not being healthy is to go in from the two entrances to enjoy the scenery.
After visiting the Blue Cave, remember to go to the Lake of Mihu to soak in the hot springs. There are obviously no more people in the Blue Lake, and you can enjoy a private space.
This is a small volcanic cave Grjotagja Cave in the Mihu area of northern Iceland. There is a fascinating natural hot spring in the cave. This is the love nest of Snow and Ygritte in The Game of Rights. All the unspeakable dramas are here.
Although the space inside the cave is particularly small, it is definitely worth it, and it is necessary to come early, otherwise it will be overcrowded. After all, there are still a lot of fans who come to check in.
The morning sun slanted into the hole, shining on the mist, forming a light beam, taking advantage of the atmosphere of the secret environment, the photos taken will bring their own genius~ Dont forget to bring a beautiful skirt
This volcanic cave was once a popular bathing place. However, due to the active activity of the earth's crust and the increase in water temperature, hot springs have long been banned in the cave.

Lake Mi is the most exotic place in Iceland. Snow has almost drowned the surface, and it seems to be in a white planet. The volcanic crater is like a crater on the surface of the moon. Therefore, in the 1960s, the crew of Apollo 11 was arranged by NASA to go to the special training before the moon, familiar with the lunar landscape. The most attractive scenery of the Mimi Lake area is bubbling mudflats, craters, and new lava. The geothermal activity of Lake Mi is very rich. There are many steam ports around the circumference of the lake. The steam column ejected from the surface is a common sight in this area. The continuous geothermal energy not only creates the wonder of steam transpiration, but also everywhere. It is a geothermal heat, and there is a smell of sulfur in the gap. There is no shortage of hot springs in places with geothermal heat. There is also a hot spring in Mihu Lake. The blue lake like Reykjavik is more natural than Blue Lake. If you are in a bad weather, you can have a hot spring here as we did the day before. After visiting the Lake Mihu, you can drive to Husavik. There is snow left on the road, and the car is slowly moving in the white planet like a foreign space.
The Vatna Glacier is Iceland's largest glacier and the largest glacier in Europe, the third largest glacier in the world.
After arriving at the camp on foot, the staff will send everyone equipment, crampons, hail, helmets, and then take the bus to the place to hike. After getting off at
, the car is divided into several teams, each team has a different team leader. The
glaciers often rain, and when there are sunny days, the weather outside is not the same as the weather on the glaciers. Therefore, the glacier raincoats must be brought on, and it is better to wear the jacket.
When you get on the glacier, the team leader will guide you through the crampons, and the crampons will be tied to the shoes. Hiking glaciers must wear crampons, otherwise the ice will be very slippery.
The route of each team on the glacier is different. The hiking glacier has no requirements for the hiking experience. The difficulty coefficient is very low. Just wear the crampons and follow the leader's footsteps on the ice and step on each step. Just fine.
Our hiking route is the first experience, there is no deep glaciers, so it won't be too tired, going back and forth for almost two hours.
The Vatna Glacier hike
general glacier squad is about 10 people. We were the most late tour of the day.
Vatna's glacier walks are mainly carried out by two travel companies. They are icelandic mountain guides (www.mountainguides.is) and glacier guides (www.glacierguides.is). (Remember that the suffixes of both sites are is
The Vatnajokull ice sheet, the largest glacier in Europe, accounts for 8% of the total area of Iceland. The crater and hot lake are distributed under the ice sheet, which is the most vivid song of ice and fire. At this moment it was silent, and even the wind stopped. Standing in front of it, still feels far away. The farthest stop in Iceland, staying for too long, on the way back, the car quickly entered the night and night.
