Odda travel guide and discussion

#photovsrealitytravel When you see photos of Trolltunga on social media, it looks like an otherworldly sanctuary! a lone wanderer perched on a sliver of rock suspended in mid-air, gazing out over a tranquil fjord surrounded by rugged, snow-capped peaks. The air looks perfectly crisp, and the atmosphere feels like an quiet communion with nature. After dragging my body up the mountain for miles, grinding through steep ascents, rocky switchbacks, and relentless wind, I reached the summit expecting that exact moment of serene isolation. The view itself is 100% real: Ringedalsvatnet lake below glows in a deep, electric blue, and the sheer scale of the cliff drops away into nothingness beneath your feet. It is undeniably one of the most breathtaking sights on the planet. Then came the reality check. Right behind the camera lens, there’s a queue of 50 to 100 hikers huddled along the rocky ridge, wrapped in windbreakers and patiently awaiting their turn to step onto the ledge. I spent nearly two hours shuffling forward in a single-file line, watching people strike poses, swap spots, and hurriedly snap photos before running off so the next person could step up. There’s an unspoken mountain etiquette where the person behind you in line becomes your photographer, so you hand over your phone, walk out onto the tongue, lift your arms in triumph, and try to look effortlessly solitary while a crowd watches your every move. It’s funny, surreal, and a bit jarring after hours of pure wilderness, but honest: everyone is up there enduring the same wait for that exact iconic shot. Despite the queue, standing on that ledge makes every single step worth it. The trick is going into the experience knowing what to expect so you don't let the crowds ruin the magic. If you want to beat the massive lines or just soak in the view without rushing, consider wild camping up on the plateau near the rock. Pitching a tent nearby meant I could watch the fog roll through the valley in total peace, sit by the cliff edge when the day-hikers had all cleared out, and catch the morning light hit the fjords before the new crowd arrived. It turns a chaotic photo line into an unforgettable wilderness experience. Local Logistics & Travel Breakdown Getting There: Base yourself in Odda or Tyssedal. #adventuretrips Let me start with the verdict: This hiking trail is absolutely stunning! Totally worth the trip! (But you gotta have good fitness, check the weather, and make sure you have enough time - all three are a must!) Where to find Trolltunga: It's in the Hardangertjord area in southern Norway, near the town of Odda. We stayed in Odda and drove from Oslo - took us about 6 hours with our rental car. Getting ready for the hike: 1. Weather is super important! Try to avoid rainy days. I mean, it's a 22km trek, and getting into trouble in heavy rain would be pretty dangerous since there's not much infrastructure along the way. So definitely check Windy right before you head out. 2. You'll need proper gear - hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and a hat are non-negotiable. Go for that three-layer system. 3. Pack enough food for two meals. We only brought one, and we were starving on the way down, so we just had chocolate. 4. Book your parking spot! If you're driving, you should reserve the P3 parking. (It's 600 NOK on the booking site, and you need to book 2-3 weeks ahead or you won't get a spot). If you don't book P3, you'll have to walk an extra 6km round trip or take a longer bus ride. The buses stop running pretty early in the afternoon, so you won't have much flexibility. The hike details: It's 22km total with a 900-meter climb. Most of the climbing happens between the 3-5km mark, and after that, it's pretty flat. The scenery changes a lot - you'll see waterfalls, fjords, tundra, and even snow. When you get to the end, the cliffs are just breathtaking with clouds rolling around. The hike itself takes about 8 hours, but with photo stops and sightseeing, plan for around 12 hours So try to get to P3 by 8 AM. You'll need to climb down some rocks to get to the photo spots, so be careful. There weren't many people in line when we went, so we only waited a few minutes. Standing on the cliff at the end makes your legs go weak, but the view is absolutely epic. No wonder it's ranked as one of the top 10 day hikes in the world on some lists. #Lake #adventure #hike

1. Beginner Friendly · Norway in Miniature (3 days 2 nights, easy check-in at Sogne + Hardanger) This is the official beginner route recommended by Norway, connecting the essence of two major fjords, and you can enjoy it without driving: · Day 1: Oslo → Myrdal → Flåm Take the train from Oslo to Myrdal, then transfer to the Flåm Railway (one of the most beautiful railways in the world), passing through snowy mountains, waterfalls, and canyons, arriving at the fjord town of Flåm, and stay at a cabin hotel in the town. · Day 2: Flåm → Gudvangen → Voss → Lofthus Take a cruise to explore the Nærøyfjord branch of the Sognefjord, then transfer by bus to Voss. In the afternoon, head to the Hardangerfjord town of Lofthus, check in at the Hotel Ullensvang from your photos and the reindeer sculpture, and watch the fjord sunset. · Day 3: Lofthus → Bergen In the morning, stroll through the town’s orchards. In the afternoon, take a bus and ferry back to Bergen, visit Bryggen wooden houses and the fish market to end the trip. 2. In-depth Self-drive · Four Major Fjords + Three Famous Rocks (7 days 6 nights, suitable for self-driving enthusiasts) · Day 1: Stavanger → Lysefjord (Preikestolen hike) Arrive in Stavanger and stay one night. Get up early the next day to hike Preikestolen (round trip about 4 hours), overlooking the full view of Lysefjord. · Day 2: Stavanger → Odda (Trolltunga) Drive to the town of Odda to prepare for the Trolltunga hike on the third day (recommended to stay in town and start early the next day). · Day 3: Odda → Lofthus (Hardangerfjord) Hike Trolltunga (round trip 10-12 hours). After finishing, drive to Lofthus and relax in the hotel’s fjord pool to relieve fatigue. · Day 4: Lofthus → Flåm (Sognefjord) Drive to Flåm, take a Sognefjord cruise in the afternoon, and stay overnight in Flåm town. · Day 5: Flåm → Geirangerfjord Drive along the fjord road, passing Eagle Road and Trollstigen, arriving at Geiranger town, and stay at a hotel by the fjord. · Day 6: Geiranger → Molde Take a Geirangerfjord cruise to see the Seven Sisters Waterfall, then head to the Atlantic Ocean Road in the afternoon to photograph the famous sea road. · Day 7: Molde → Return to Oslo/Bergen 🏨 Accommodation Recommendations (by fjord) | Fjord | Recommended Accommodation | Highlights | |-------------------|----------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Hardangerfjord | Hotel Ullensvang (Lofthus) | The hotel from your photos, fjord view rooms + outdoor pool, iconic reindeer sculpture in the garden is a must-see spot | | Sognefjord | Fretheim Hotel (Flåm) | Century-old hotel, walking distance to Flåm train station, windows overlook fjord and snowy mountains | | Geirangerfjord | Union Hotel (Geiranger) | Facing Geirangerfjord directly, some rooms have views of the Seven Sisters Waterfall, fully equipped | | Lysefjord | Preikestolen BaseCamp (Stavanger) | Dedicated base camp for Preikestolen hike, close to the trailhead, cost-effective | 💡 Practical Tips to Avoid Pitfalls 1. Transportation · Self-driving: You can use a Chinese driver’s license with a translation. Fjord roads are mostly mountainous with ferries; check ferry schedules in advance (booking recommended in peak season), watch speed limits and roadside cattle and sheep. · Public transport: Use Skyss.no to check buses and ferries in western Norway. Services are limited, so buy tickets in advance during peak season. 2. Hiking · For hikes like Trolltunga and Preikestolen, wear anti-slip hiking shoes, bring enough water and snacks, and carry a raincoat even in summer (mountain weather is changeable). · Beginners are not advised to attempt difficult routes alone; join local hiking tours where guides provide equipment and route guidance. 3. Prices · Norway is very expensive; a cup of coffee costs about 50 NOK (≈35 CNY), a simple meal about 200 NOK (≈140 CNY). It’s recommended to buy snacks and bottled water in advance. · Accommodation prices double in peak season (July-August), so book 2-3 months ahead. Small town guesthouses offer better value. 4. Other Tips · Bring an international credit card; most small towns do not accept cash. · Bring a thick jacket even in summer; fjords have large temperature differences between morning and evening, and mountain temperatures are even lower.

🇳🇴 🏡💚 It's filled with clusters of cozy houses straight out of a fairy taleꔛ This is a small town where you basically have to stay if you're planning a full-day trek at Trolltunga, and the lake view right in front of it is absolutely stunning! It's actually not a lake, but rather a waterway flowing between the fjords. However, it's so calm and crystal clear that it's the perfect spot to grab a packed lunch and enjoy a picnic.ᐟ 📍Odda, Norway

📍 Odda, Norway 💦 Låtefossen Waterfall Located just 15 minutes from Odda Standing at a height of 165 meters, this powerful waterfall splits into two streams as it cascades down. You can experience the mist up close, as it feels like it's touching your face. Downside: Situated right by the national road, parking is limited and may require waiting. · -- 🎥 Travel Tip Using a drone to capture footage will give you a full view of the waterfall's grandeur. During high water seasons, the roaring sound of the waterfall provides an exhilarating and refreshing experience! · -- 🚗 Trolltunga and Odda Most travelers planning a trek to Trolltunga pass through Odda. Unless you're heading directly to Trolltunga from Bergen, Odda is a must-stop town. "Not necessarily a destination on its own, but a great base camp before or after visiting Trolltunga."

📍 Odda, Norway The small town of Odda, with a population of 7,000, serves as a gateway to Norway's top three trekking courses, including Trolltunga. · -- 🏡 Accommodation Though the entrance is semi-basement, the interior offers an open view! Perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in a tranquil atmosphere. · -- 🚶 Strolling Around the Town Almerket free parking lot & Odda Church, a Lutheran church ⛪. Most shops are closed on Sundays 😅. However, souvenir shops are open, so you can grab postcards/magnets! Trolltunga is a rock formation situated about 1,100 metres above sea level in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The cliff juts horizontally out from the mountain, about 700 metres above the north side of the lake Ringedalsvatnet. Popularity of the hike to Trolltunga and rock formation itself has exploded in recent years. The increased popularity has turned Trolltunga into a national icon and a major tourist attraction for the region. Until 2010, fewer than 800 people hiked to Trolltunga each year. In 2016 more than 80,000 people hiked the 27-kilometre (17 mi) round-trip from the village of Skjeggedal, making it one of Norway's most popular hikes. #hiking

After walking for six hours, we finally arrived at trolltunga😍 Actually, troll is the giant in the legend of the Norwegian forest. It just so happens that this strange stone is protruding from the side of the mountain like his 👅 so there is the name of the devil's tongue Because it takes about 10-12 hours to walk we have to start leaving at 7 am At first there is a Z-shaped uphill to see some cars are able to go up and skip this uphill but we did not know there was this option 🤣 Although the temperature to go in early September is only 5-6 degrees, it will be even colder in the morning But my outfit is just a short sleeve tshirt with a thin down plus a windbreaker Also halfway through the Z section I had taken off my down jacket😂 Then every 1km there will be instructions to let you know how far you are from your destination Certain sections will be more gravel or have running water so be especially careful You have to queue up to take this photo when you get to trolltunga My place was like queuing for about 30 to 45 minutes The main thing is to test everyone's endurance and leg strength I still remember walking back down the hill at the end of the crazy downhill that really made my legs tremble🙈 #travel abroad #kol photo hotspots #travel inspiration #attraction photography guide #coolest travel experience #nature wonders #OverseasTravel

Odda, the gateway town before hiking Trolltunga. I stumbled upon this unexpected beauty; this is Norway, another side of the famous hiking regions like Trolltunga and Preikestolen, which are the highlights of Norway's natural wonders. I drove all the way to the town of Odda to prepare for my hike. Along the way, I encountered waterfalls by the road and stunning scenery. It was so beautiful that I had to pull over and take a walk. The sight of golden yellow leaves contrasting against the lakeside views made it even more magical. 🍂 I booked an affordable one-night stay at a local hillside home. The view from the backyard was incredible—definitely worth the short stay before heading out for my hike at 5 AM tomorrow. The further you travel, the more beauty you find. That’s the true charm of traveling, and I can honestly say that Norway’s nature is absolutely breathtaking. 🇳🇴

I recently had the chance to stay at a cozy little treehouse in Norway, Odda, which truly felt like living out my childhood dream. The atmosphere was magical, surrounded by nature, and the treehouse itself was charming and comfortable, with a stunning view. You have to hike for 20-40 minutes up to the hill before you reach the treehouse. It was interesting and makes it even like staying in the nature. There was a brief water outage during my stay, but the staff, Torstein, handled it proactively and with great care, ensuring it didn’t affect the overall experience. Their attentiveness and professionalism made me feel well taken care of. Overall, it was a memorable and delightful stay. I would definitely recommend this unique experience to my friends and anyone looking for something special in Norway.

Some places impress you. Others make you slow down. Odda is one of those places. Tucked between towering mountains and the Hardangerfjord, it feels like you’re standing inside a postcard no matter which direction you look. Waterfalls crash down the cliffs, clouds drift across the peaks, and even a simple drive becomes part of the adventure. A few tips if you’re visiting: · Give yourself more than a day, there’s a lot more to explore than just the famous hikes. · Pack layers. The weather can change from sunshine to rain and back again in an hour. · Don’t rush between viewpoints. Some of the best moments happen when you stop and simply take in the scenery. · Keep your camera ready: you’ll find photo opportunities around almost every corner. Have you ever visited a place that made you slow down and appreciate the moment a little more? 🌿🇳🇴

#winterescape 🌲 Nature’s Power Unleashed: Tjørnadalsfossen in Odda 🌊 Get ready to be awestruck by the roaring Tjørnadalsfossen waterfall, nestled deep in Odda’s lush mountain embrace! This hidden gem is perfect for travelers chasing misty vibes, dramatic landscapes, and peaceful moments where nature takes center stage. Take the scenic boat ride across the lake—just like in your photo, with clouds and fog swirling above, mountains and trees framing the water (insta-worthy shot alert: capture the boat against the misty backdrop for a true Nature-Vision snap!). Once you reach the waterfall trailhead, follow the marked path winding through dense forests and rocky terrain. Don’t miss that awe-inspiring view as the water crashes down—a must-do experience and a top photo spot. Must-do: Arrive early morning to catch the fog lingering for mystical scenes. If possible, pack a light picnic and enjoy the tranquility right by the lake’s edge. The sound of the waterfall and birds makes for a total relaxation moment. Practical Visiting Tips: The route can be slippery, especially with the fog and frequent moisture—wear sturdy hiking boots and waterproof gear. The area is open all day, year-round, but weather changes quickly here; I found a raincoat way better than an umbrella (the wind just sweeps them away!). Remember there’s limited cell signal—let someone know your plans. Precautions: Keep a safe distance from fast-moving water, especially if hiking with kids. Stick to marked paths; some rocks can be mossy and slick. #Odda #NorwayNature #Waterfalls #LakeViews #TravelTips

Started off with some shopping in Odda. The town in a narrow valley between mountains and a lake. It is also tourist hub were many people start off their hiking to world famous Trolltunga-Rock. 🍲Siderhuset Ola K - we had lunch here. Not too far of a drive from Odda on the west side of the fjord. There is this beautiful restaurant by the water. It was raining so we opted to sit inside. We had a delicious fish soup. 🏨 Ullensvang hotel - After lunch we took the small ferry boat from Utne to Kinsarvik. We stayed one night at the hotel here. Beautiful experience by the fjord. 🥂 Cider tasting at Opedalstunet - super nice experience with the apple farmer and his son giving us the tour of the farm where we ended up tasting some of their own produced cider from Hardanger. Låtefossen - we stoped by one of the spectacular waterfalls on the way back home again. April is a good time to catch the apple farms in bloom. Although we had rain it was a beautiful roadtrip. #norway #familytrip #localguides #Ullensvang #odda #Hardanger
