Pinghu travel guide and discussion

Hey everyone! The ultimate hidden gem for autumn in Shanghai is here! Enjoy a 300-mu red maple forest for free, just a 1.5-hour drive from the city center. These stunning autumn colors only last for 20 days a year—miss it and you'll have to wait until next year! 🍂 📍Location: Jinshan Maple Leaf Island (Xinjianjiang Group 4, Shantang Village, Langxia Town, part of Langxia Country Park area) 💰Admission: Free! Free! Free! I'll say it three times because it's important. 🚗Transportation Guide (Driving recommended) ▪️City center → G15 Shenhai/Tingfeng Expressway → Caolang Highway → Langhua Road, navigate to "Jinshan Maple Leaf Island" or "Langxia Country Park P2 Parking Lot" ▪️The whole trip takes about 1–1.5 hours. On weekends after 10:00 AM, the official parking lot fills up easily, so navigate to "Shantang Village Committee Parking Lot" instead (free, 5-minute walk). ▪️Public transit: Take the Lianlang Special Line from the North Square of Lianhua Road Station on Metro Line 1 → Langxia Station, then take a 10-minute taxi ride. ⏰Best time to visit 📅Mid-to-late November to early December. Early December is when it's fully red and most spectacular! Golden hours for the day: 9:00–11:00 AM (soft light, no backlight) and 3:00–5:00 PM (slanting sun shines through leaves, creating a golden-red glow). ⚠️On weekends, it's recommended to arrive before 8:30 AM! During peak red season, there may be temporary crowd control, so arrive early to secure the best photo spots! 📸Photo tips (must-read for great shots) 🌟Three core photo spots: 1️⃣ Lakeside reflection area—wait 10 minutes for no wind to capture symmetrical, oil painting-like shots. 2️⃣ Maple path/red leaf tunnel—walk slowly sideways for candid shots; the light spots on your shoulders are amazing! 3️⃣ Observation deck overhead shot—layered yellow, red, and green colors for a perfect drone-like effect. 👗Outfit tips: ✔️ Off-white, apricot, or light blue solid-colored coats/sweaters look best in photos. ✖️ Definitely don't wear red or orange! You'll clash with the maple leaves and regret it. 💡 Beret + scarf + holding fallen leaves = ultimate aesthetic. 🎯Camera settings: ▫️ For portraits, use a large aperture to blur the red leaves in the foreground. ▫️ For leaf veins, use backlight spot metering. ▫️ Use a wide-angle lens to shoot upwards at the sky + light filtering through the maple canopy. 🎒Must-have gear: Non-slip flat shoes (fallen leaves in the forest can be slippery), bring your own water (small stalls in the park are a bit pricey), mosquito repellent (autumn mosquitoes are still around!). 🏞️Nearby attractions (worth a stop while you're there) ▫️ Langxia Country Park (5-minute drive, free): Rice paddy art + cute pets + fruit picking, top choice for families. ▫️ Mingyue Shantang (ancient village on the Shanghai-Zhejiang border, free): Bluestone paths + old teahouses + roasted sweet potato aroma, one bridge crosses two provinces. ▫️ Shantang Village farmhouse restaurant: Boiled Langxia lamb + tabing (flatbread) for 5 yuan each; a meal for four is about 120 yuan, super affordable. ▫️ Lüxiang Fruit Park (No. 3988 Jinshi North Road, free): Pick and eat strawberries in December, 30 minutes away. ▫️ Fengjing Ancient Town: Stop by on your way back; thousand-year-old water town + zongzi + Ding's pig trotters; autumn nights in the ancient town are amazing. 💫Classic one-day itinerary: 8:00 AM Depart → 9:30 AM Maple Leaf Island (2 hours for lakeside + maple path photos) → 12:00 PM Eat lamb and tabing in Shantang Village → 1:30 PM Walk in Langxia Country Park → 3:30 PM Pick oranges in Lüxiang → 6:00 PM Return.

Honestly, Waipushan is truly a hidden gem of a small island by the sea in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai area! No crowds, the mountain and sea atmosphere is fully immersive, perfect for taking half a day off on the weekend to relax, take photos, and watch the sea. The pace is slow and unhurried, just follow the guide and you won’t go wrong! Basic must-know info (remember in advance to avoid wasted trips) 1. Location & Navigation: Just search for "Waipushan Scenic Area (Pinghu Zhapu)," it’s part of the Jiulongshan Resort Area. Follow the GPS directly, no detours. 2. Tickets & Hours: Adult tickets are 30 RMB, buying online in advance is about the same price as on-site, very cost-effective; the scenic area opens at 8:30 AM, stops admitting visitors at 4:30 PM, and closes at 5 PM. I sincerely recommend going between 1 PM and 3 PM to avoid the midday sun and catch the gentle seaside sunset. 3. Parking: The scenic area parking lot charges 10 RMB per visit with no time limit, very high cost-performance, easy to park if driving. 4. Duration: 2-3 hours of pure sightseeing is just right, perfectly fits a half-day trip, no need to get up early or rush, very relaxing. Outfit & Essentials (key tips to avoid pitfalls) Absolutely do not wear high heels or dress shoes! The island is full of stone steps and rocky paths, some steep and slippery, so non-slip sneakers are a must. The seaside wind is strong and will mess up your hair; even on sunny days it’s a bit chilly, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Sun protection is a must! Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses because the UV rays by the sea are very strong and you can get sunburned quickly. There are very few small shops on the island and prices are high, so it’s recommended to bring a bottle of water and some snacks—just enough for the trip. Step-by-step half-day itinerary (no detours, all must-see spots) The whole route is a single loop, just follow it without backtracking, very worry-free! First stop: Tongtian Bridge (the first iconic photo spot right at the entrance) Just a few steps in is Waipushan’s signature internet-famous suspension bridge, a 200+ meter cross-sea bridge without pillars. It gently sways when you step on it, creating a full atmosphere. Below your feet is the rolling sea water, with panoramic mountain and sea views on both sides, the view is very wide. Wearing light-colored clothes makes for the best photos, every shot looks fresh and island-style, don’t miss it! Second stop: Stone Beach & Seaside Rocks After crossing the bridge is the rocky beach where you can step into the sea water and touch the rocks up close, very soothing. If you want atmospheric sea views or photos of your profile looking at the sea, this is the best spot. A reminder: the rocks are slippery when wet, walk slowly, don’t run or play around, safety first. Third stop: Xiaoputuo Guanyin Zen Temple A few minutes uphill brings you to this small courtyard with yellow walls and dark tiles nestled between the mountains and sea, very tranquil. No need to pray if you don’t want to, just enjoy the ancient-style architecture and the mountain sea breeze, quietly rest for a few minutes, far from city noise, very relaxing, and the photos have a Zen vibe. Fourth stop: Wentao Pavilion + Love Locks Spot A lesser-known, quiet spot with very few people! The pavilion was built to commemorate Master Hongyi. Sitting inside and gazing at the sea while feeling the breeze is super comfortable. The railings are covered with love locks, full of atmosphere, perfect for couples or solo visitors, every photo tells a story. Fifth stop: Lonely Book House & White Lighthouse (top photo spots) These are the island’s two most popular Instagrammable spots! The Lonely Book House is simple and clean, with a cool and sophisticated vibe; the white lighthouse stands on the rocks by the sea, paired with blue sky and ocean, perfect for Instagram-style shots that look great even without editing. If you want to take photos, stay a bit longer here when the light is soft for the best shots. Final stop: Sunset Beach The biggest benefit of coming in the afternoon is watching the sunset! At dusk, the sunlight spreads over the sea, turning the whole ocean golden, gentle and healing. No need to fight for a spot, just find a corner on the beach to sit quietly and watch the sunset—it’s the most soothing way to end a half-day trip. Extra practical tips to avoid pitfalls 1. No need to rush early! Half-day trips don’t require coming early in the morning; afternoons have comfortable temperatures, beautiful light, and fewer tour groups. 2. The island’s paths are all gentle stone steps, not really hiking, suitable for all ages, not tiring. 3. After touring, head straight to Zhapu Town for seafood stalls, fresh and affordable. The mantis shrimp and swimming crab are delicious, a perfect end to the trip. 4. The suspension bridge may close temporarily during strong winds, so check the weather before you go to avoid wasted trips. Overall summary: Waipushan is the kind of small, hidden island where you don’t have to think hard or rush, and every photo is a hit. You can finish the whole trip in half a day, it’s healing and relaxing, perfect for a weekend short getaway!

Recommend reserving about 2 hours. ◦ Lunch: Outside East Lake scenic area or return to the city. ◦ Afternoon: Anchang Ancient Town ▪ A bit farther from the city (about 40 minutes by car), but well worth it. The old street extends along the river, focus on the sauce-dried goods hanging on both banks (sausage, dried fish, sauce duck), feeling the strong local life atmosphere. Recommended spots: local restaurants (such as Xianheng Hotel, Treasure Hunt, etc.). 📌 Practical Tips: · Transportation: City attractions are concentrated (Lu Xun’s Hometown, Sage of Calligraphy, Bazi Bridge, Cangqiao Straight Street), walk + taxi/bus is enough. East Lake is a bit farther; Anchang Ancient Town requires taxi or bus (BRT rapid bus available). · Accommodation: Recommended to stay near Lu Xun’s Hometown or City Square for convenient transport and food. · Essence: The beauty of Shaoxing lies in "slow" and "real." I knew Korean food wouldn't be very good, but I was still lured in by the marketing of the first Korean restaurant in Shanghai. Eating their tacos, the oil from the filling leaked onto my hands (they didn't provide gloves). The creamy cheese baked ribs (¥79) consisted of five small ribs (just a little bigger than our usual sweet and sour ribs). I ate one, but couldn't find any meat, just cartilage. The quality control and taste were both disappointing. After eating there, I swear this place will be on my blacklist along with [another Korean restaurant]. I originally wanted to go to Xita that night, but there was a long queue. Suddenly, I was craving sweet and sour pork, shredded pork with sweet bean sauce, and creamy hand-pulled pancakes. Having just gotten off work, I was starving and ordered a whole table full of food. Of course, we couldn't finish it all. In the middle of the night, my husband got hungry and actually got up and made two more pancakes. PS: If you want something to eat with rice, try their stir-fried potatoes, eggplant, and green peppers. For Jinshan locals, it's a popular restaurant in Pinghu. The owner doesn't offer discounts or round down the price, so it's not cheap, and the food is on the salty side. I don't understand why my husband craves their stinky tofu hot pot every day.

This is my second time here, and I skipped the classic route. Watching the fishing port at Zhapu Ancient Town, climbing the "Little Great Wall" at Tangshan Park, chasing sunsets at Waipushan, and drinking coffee on the old street—this small city blends mountains, sea, and everyday life. A two-day, one-night trip so relaxing I didn't want to leave.🛵 ✨Recommendation reasons 1.5 hours by car from Shanghai or Hangzhou, or 30 minutes by high-speed rail. It has the refinement of a Jiangnan water town and the sea breeze of Hangzhou Bay. Zhapu is the only ancient town in the Yangtze River Delta "sandwiched" between mountains and the sea, where you can listen to the pines, watch the ocean, stroll through old streets, and enjoy fresh seafood. With low prices and few tourists, it's perfect for those who want to avoid the crowds at popular attractions. 📸Must-visit highlights 🔹Zhapu Ancient Town: A thousand-year-old fishing port on one side, a Ming Dynasty battery on the other. A 15-minute climb to the top of Tangshan Park offers a view of the "Little Great Wall," where you can see giant ships in Ningbo Port and fishing boat masts in the same frame—a collision of mountains, sea, history, and industry. 🔹Waipushan: A niche, artistic island by Hangzhou Bay with a photogenic red bridge over the sea. The lighthouse by the sea against the blue sky and ocean is so gentle at sunset it leaves you speechless. 🔹South Street Old Street: Travel back to the 80s with old-fashioned barbershops, tailor shops, and faded supply and marketing cooperative signs. The owner of a riverside cafe said, "Drink coffee in the morning, and you can catch crabs in the afternoon," and it's true. 🔹Jiulongshan Tourist Resort: A national forest park and provincial-level resort with 75% forest coverage. The highest peak, Chenshan, is 161 meters, perfect for light hiking. 🔹Tianfei Palace Battery: A national key cultural relic protection unit. Watch fishermen mend nets and repair boats on the seawall, and see the fishing boats unload their catch in the evening before heading to the food stalls to have your seafood cooked. 🗓️2-day, 1-night relaxing itinerary 🔹Day 1: Slow city tour Arrive in the morning, start with breakfast at Azhen Aba. Visit the Pinghu Museum, then head to Baoben Temple—a thousand-year-old temple with free admission. Lunch: Maogou vermicelli. Afternoon: Cycling around East Lake, check in at the Li Shutong Memorial Hall. Evening: South Hetou Historical and Cultural District, watch the lanterns light up, stay in the city. 🔹Day 2: Mountain & sea route Morning: Drive to Zhapu Ancient Town, climb Tangshan Park for a panoramic view of the harbor. Lunch: Seafood noodles on South Street. Afternoon: Head to Waipushan, walk across the bridge, visit the lighthouse, and wait for the sunset. Evening: Return trip. 🍜Must-eat food list 🔹Zhapu Seafood Noodles: The broth is boiled until snow-white, with a whole blue crab buried inside—so fresh it'll make your head spin. 🔹Steamed Egg with Sea Urchin: Delivered straight from the fishing port, fresh and sweet, melting on the tip of your tongue. 🔹Yellow Wine Braised Sea Snails: A hidden gem in local eateries; the wine aroma brings out the ultimate freshness. 🔹Old-School Pan-Fried Buns: Open for 30 years at the entrance of the old street, crispy on the bottom and bursting with juice. 🔹Fermented Egg and Lotus Root Pork Wontons: Intangible cultural heritage fermented eggs paired with crunchy lotus root—a fusion of three flavors. 🔹Sauce Rib Cold Noodles: Salty, savory, and slightly sweet, carrying the "fresh and sweet" culinary memory of Pinghu. 🚌Practical travel guide 🔹Driving: Navigate to "Zhapu Tangshan Park." About 1.5 hours from Hangzhou/Shanghai. Free parking at the entrance of the old street. 🔹High-speed rail: Transfer to bus 161/162 at Jiaxing Station to reach Pinghu. 🔹In-city: Shared e-bikes are convenient in the city. For Zhapu, driving or taking a taxi is recommended. 🔹Return: Rideshare back to Shanghai or Hangzhou costs about 50–60 yuan per person. 💡Travel tips 🔹Zhapu is not a typical "refined" ancient town; the fishing port area has a slight fishy smell. If you mind, proceed with caution. 🔹It's windy by the seawall; wear a hat and a windbreaker. 🔹The seafood market is busiest from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. You can buy seafood and find a stall to cook it for you. 🔹Wear neutral colors for photos on the red bridge at Waipushan. 🔹Wear comfortable shoes; there are many stone steps at Tangshan Park. 🔹Bring mosquito repellent in the summer; there are many bugs near the water. 💬A final note The charm of this small city isn't in the crowds. It's in the sea breeze on Tangshan Mountain in Zhapu, the sunset seen from the red bridge at Waipushan, the cup of coffee enjoyed on South Street, and the blue crab buried in a bowl of snow-white seafood noodles. Two days and one night—no crowds, no high costs, just take your time. Go before it gets crowded!🌊

📍Address: Jiulongshan Tourist Resort, Zhapu Town, Pinghu City, Jiaxing 🎫Admission: Free entry to the resort, Waipu Mountain (Tongtian Bridge) is 30 yuan, water park and equestrian activities are charged separately ⏰Duration: 2–3 hours, self-driving recommended ✅Must-visit: Tongtian Bridge, Waipu Mountain white lighthouse, Xiaoputuo Guanyin Zen Temple, Wentao Pavilion, Nanwan Battery, coastal boardwalk 💡Tips: Great for sunsets, parking is 10 yuan, it's windy by the sea so bring a jacket, watch your step on the rocky areas

I urge everyone to read this before heading to Maple Leaf Island so you don't make a wasted trip or fall into common traps! ✨Travel tips ▫️Best time to visit: Mid-to-late November to early December. There's only a 20-day golden viewing window. Go too early and it's all green; go too late and the leaves will have fallen. Try to visit on weekdays, as weekends are very crowded. ▫️Transportation🚗 ✅Driving (highly recommended): About 1–1.5 hours from downtown Shanghai. Navigate to "Jinshan Maple Leaf Island (Langxia Shantang Village)." There is a free parking lot, but it's usually full after 10:00 AM on weekends, so try to arrive early. ⚠️Be cautious about choosing private roadside parking. ✅Public transportation: Take the Lianlang Special Line from Lianhua Road Station on Line 1. The bus frequency is low, and you'll need to take a 10-minute taxi ride to the entrance after arriving. The last bus for the return trip is early, so this is not recommended as a first choice. 🗺Itinerary (one-day, relaxed pace) Total visit time: 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace 1️⃣ Enter Maple Leaf Island > Take photos at Maple Leaf Avenue (Maple Leaf Tunnel) 2️⃣ View the reflection of red leaves on the wooden boardwalk by Maple Forest Lake 3️⃣ Stroll and relax on the forest path covered in fallen leaves 👉 If you have extra time: Visit Mingyue Shantang Ancient Village to explore the old street and try snacks > See the rural rice fields at Langxia Country Park, then head back 📸Must-visit photo spots ✔️ Maple Leaf Avenue Tunnel: An archway of maple trees where sunlight filters through to create beautiful spots. Light-colored outfits (off-white/camel) look great in photos. The lighting is best from 9:00–11:00 AM and 2:00–4:00 PM. ✔️ Lakeside wooden boardwalk: On windless days, capture the reflection of red leaves on the lake for a perfect atmospheric shot. ✔️ Forest path with fallen leaves: Less crowded, covered in red leaves. Great for dynamic walking shots, stepping on leaves, and atmospheric portraits. 💡 Pro tip: Pick up fallen maple leaves to use as props, but don't shake the trees! ⚠️Tips to avoid pitfalls | Save this! 1. There are no restaurants or convenience stores inside the park. Bring your own water and snacks. For main meals, go to Shantang Old Street or Langxia Town; don't buy overpriced food from vendors at the entrance. 2. Do not shake trees or break off maple leaves; be a respectful visitor. The ground in the forest can be slippery with fallen leaves, so wear non-slip shoes. It's windy in the countryside, so bring an extra jacket. 3. The red leaves are affected by temperature. Search for recent photos from other visitors before you go to avoid making a trip when the leaves haven't turned red yet. 4. Traffic is heavy on weekends. Try to arrive between 8:30–9:00 AM; arriving late makes parking a nightmare. 5. Ask for prices in advance when ordering at farm-to-table restaurants. Avoid the high-priced shops at the entrance; older, established shops in town offer better value. 🏨Accommodation suggestions 👉 A day trip is fine, but if you want a slow-paced visit and to see the maple forest in the morning, consider staying for 1 night. ▪️ Shantang Village homestays (near Maple Leaf Island): ¥180–320/night. Farmhouse style, close to the ancient village. Rooms are in high demand on weekends during the maple season, so be sure to book in advance on Trip.com. ▪️ Chain hotels in Langxia Town: ¥140–260/night. Plenty of supermarkets and restaurants nearby. It's a 10-minute drive to Maple Leaf Island and offers the best value. 🍜Food recommendations Farmhouse chicken soup, boiled mutton, and seasonal farm vegetables. At Shantang Old Street, try the flat cakes, begonia cakes, and shumai. You can have a comfortable meal for ¥50–70 per person.

We didn't want to travel too far for the National Day holiday, so we took a road trip from Shanghai to Pinghu. It's a short drive, making it very convenient for families traveling with seniors and children. We had originally booked a 4-star hotel, but upon arrival, we found the facilities were quite different from the photos. While the service was decent, the stay was really uncomfortable. We decided to check out and switch to this Atour in the Pinghu Economic Development Zone. We chose it mainly because it looked newer, but it truly exceeded our expectations! 🏠 Facilities and rooms: The hotel is very new overall, the room was clean, and the floor-to-ceiling windows provided great natural light. I was most satisfied with the room layout, which was much more practical than the previous 4-star hotel. The mattress was just the right firmness, the soundproofing was good, and it was very quiet. The details were also well thought out: tissues at the vanity, disinfectant wipes next to the toilet, a large, clear TV, and good ventilation. 💁 Service: The front desk staff were very friendly, especially the young lady with big eyes—her smile was so welcoming that it made us feel comfortable the moment we walked in. Room deliveries are handled by robots, which are easy to use and fast; the kids were quite excited to see them. 📍 Location and transportation: Pinghu itself isn't large, and this Atour is in the new district, where the surrounding roads feel quite new. I highly recommend driving! With a car, it takes about 10–15 minutes to get to Donghu and Nanhetou, and a bit longer to Jiulongshan—about half an hour, since it's by the coast. You can drive into Jiulongshan, while Donghu and Nanhetou have a classic Jiangnan vibe, perfect for a leisurely stroll with family. Also, parking in many parts of Pinghu is very cheap or even free, making it very road-trip friendly. 🍳 Breakfast: Breakfast includes noodles, rice noodles, small wontons, congee, tofu pudding, and DIY desserts. Fried dough sticks (youtiao) are kept warm on an induction cooker, which is very thoughtful, and they taste good too. The restaurant seating is comfortable with good lighting, making for a pleasant breakfast experience. ✨ Summary: With new facilities, great service, a thoughtful breakfast, and convenient parking, it offers excellent value for the price. I highly recommend this hotel for families traveling with children or seniors visiting Pinghu; it's very convenient for road trips. I hope this Atour maintains this level of value and service—I'll definitely consider staying here again next time I'm in Pinghu!
