A hidden gem for traveling with parents on flat ground, no hiking but still breathtaking
Taking parents out is often met with “Since we’re here, let’s hike”—but knees aren’t up for it, stamina runs out, and the second half of the trip is all about coaxing. Actually, China has plenty of cities where you can enjoy stunning views on flat ground. High-speed trains get you there, the journey isn’t tiring, and the scenery is impressive. Here are 7 places I’ve personally visited. The routes are gentle, with convenient dining and shopping along the way, so parents can finish the trip feeling refreshed and ready to share on social media.
01 Zhoukou | Henan
📍 Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Area | Taiqing Palace
When parents come to Henan, Zhoukou is definitely the top choice for “saving their legs.” The entire Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum plaza is flat enough for electric wheelchairs. From Wuzhao Gate to Fuxi Mausoleum, the wide stone paths and dense shade make it easy. Before 9 AM, it’s quiet, with the scent of pine and incense blending. Elderly visitors can walk a few steps and rest on stone benches.
⚠️ Avoid weekends when locals crowd the main hall for worship, cutting the peaceful atmosphere in half. Taiqing Palace is in Luyi, about a 40-minute drive from Zhoukou city. The ancient cypress trees in front of the hall are said to be over 2,000 years old, with trunks too wide for three people to hug.
🍜 For lunch, stop by Luyi county to try “Kongji roast chicken.” The meat falls off the bone and pairs perfectly with a bowl of spicy pepper soup. Parents all said it was satisfying.
02 Ya’an | Sichuan
📍 Bifengxia
For a summer escape with parents, Bifengxia’s key is “see the scenery by car, see animals on flat ground.” The park’s sightseeing bus goes straight to the panda base entrance. A few hundred meters of flat walking lets you watch the national treasure munch bamboo. 🐼 I arrived at 10 AM, just in time for feeding. The panda sat on the ground hugging bamboo, its cheeks puffed like steamed buns. My mom filmed for 10 minutes.
⚠️ Fog often rolls in during the afternoon, reducing visibility. It’s best to see the animals in the morning. After the park, heading down leads to Ya’an city. 🍜 “Gan Lao Si Ya Fish” is a must-try. The fish is tender, the broth fresh, and with a side of spicy bamboo shoots in chili oil, my dad ate two bowls of rice with the soup.
🚄 Take a high-speed train from Chengdu West to Ya’an in about 1 hour. A 30-minute taxi ride from the station to the park on flat roads makes for a smooth trip.
03 Shannan | Tibet
📍 Yamdrok Lake
Many think Tibet means altitude sickness and hiking, but Yamdrok Lake can be enjoyed “lying down.” From Lhasa, hire a car on paved roads all the way to the 4,441-meter-high viewing platform. A 50-meter walk from the car shows the lake surface. 🌊 The lake’s blue changes with the light—sapphire at noon, milky green at dusk. I sat on a roadside rock with my mom, watching Tibetans lead yaks for photos. The wind was strong but not cold, and the sun warmed our backs.
⏰ Arrive before 10 AM for the clearest reflections when the lake is calm.
⚠️ Don’t buy turquoise from the small stalls near the viewing platform. Fake and real are mixed, and it’s easy to get scammed. On the way back, stop in Langkazi county for yak beef noodles. Large meat chunks and rich broth make up for the bumpy ride.
04 Baiyin | Gansu
📍 Yellow River Stone Forest
For parents visiting northwest China, Baiyin’s Yellow River Stone Forest is a prime example of “seeing canyons on flat ground.” Enter the park and take a bus to the top, then switch to an electric cart down to the canyon bottom—no stairs at all. The earth pillars in the canyon rise dozens of meters, making you feel like you’re walking through a giant’s street. My dad kept saying, “It must have taken millions of years to form this.”
⚠️ The canyon bottom is exposed to the sun at noon. Visit at 8 AM or after 4 PM when the light hits the pillars at an angle, highlighting textures without needing filters for photos.
🍜 A 15-minute drive from the park to Longwan village offers farm-to-table dining. The Yellow River carp and fermented rice noodles are exceptional, with a 30-yuan per person price filling you up.
🚄 Take a high-speed train from Lanzhou to Baiyin South in about 40 minutes. The park is far from the city, so renting a car is recommended. One-way drive takes about 1 hour.
05 Dongguan | Guangdong
📍 Humen Bridge
Who says Dongguan is just factories? Take parents to Humen Bridge to see where the Pearl River meets the sea. Park next to the Maritime Museum and walk to the viewing platform—all flat ground. Looking up from under the bridge, the towers soar into the clouds, and cargo ships slowly pass beneath, creating an industrial spectacle. My mom was most interested in the bronze sculptures in the park under the bridge, which recreate the smoky battle scenes. We walked and talked history for nearly 2 hours.
🍜 After the bridge, head to Humen town’s “Xinwan seafood street.” The typhoon shelter crab and salt and pepper mantis shrimp are signature dishes. At 80 yuan per person, you can finish the meal with a stroll along the pier.
⚠️ The bridge may have traffic jams on holidays. Weekdays or before 10 AM are best.
06 Xuancheng | Anhui
📍 Chaji ancient village | Jixi Longchuan
Most ancient villages in southern Anhui require climbing steps, but Chaji and Longchuan are flat for easy strolling. Chaji’s charm lies in its small bridges, flowing water, and old ancestral halls. The stone paths are polished smooth and easy to walk. I arrived at 3 PM when sunlight slanted into the ancestral hall courtyard, casting wooden carvings on the walls. My mom said, “This is what old houses should feel like.” The next day, we drove to Longchuan in Jixi. The car parked right at the Hu family ancestral hall entrance. Inside is a five-section courtyard, each with explanation signs, so no need to guess.
🍜 The “Chaji restaurant” in the village serves must-try fermented tofu and stinky mandarin fish. The tofu is crispy outside and tender inside, dipped in spicy sauce. My dad ate three pieces in a row.
⏰ Stay one night in Chaji. The homestay owner will show you the perfect early morning spot before tourists arrive at 6 AM. Morning mist and cooking smoke create a living ink painting.
07 Baishan | Jilin
📍 Changbai Mountain
Many think taking parents to Changbai Mountain means long hikes, but both the north and west slopes have shuttle buses straight to Tianchi Lake. The west slope has 1,442 steps, but the incline is gentle. My 67-year-old mom took 40 minutes with breaks to finish. Standing by the lake, the wind blows across the water, which feels icy, but the view is worth it. My dad stared at the blue water for 10 minutes, saying, “This must be where immortals soak their feet.”
⚠️ Weather changes quickly on the mountain. Bring a windbreaker and raincoat. Renting one at the base costs 50 yuan, but it’s better to bring your own.
🍜 After descending, go to Erdaobaihe town’s “Songfu family” for iron pot stew. Goose with potatoes and corn pancakes on the side make for a warm, comforting family meal.
🚄 Take a high-speed train from Changchun to Dunhua in about 1.5 hours, then hire a car to the Changbai Mountain base. No wasted travel.
08 Jiujiang | Jiangxi
📍 Lushan scenic area | Lushan West Sea
Lushan sounds like a hiking spot, but there’s a cable car straight to Guling town. A 20-minute taxi from Jiujiang station gets you to the cable car base. The 7-minute ride up leads to flat ground. The villa area and old streets are perfect for a leisurely stroll. My mom loved Meilu Villa, saying, “Soong Mei-ling used to summer in places like this. She really knew how to pick spots.” The next day, we drove to Lushan West Sea. The car took us directly to Zhelin Lake pier, where boats shuttle among thousands of islands. The water is so clear you can see the stones at the bottom.
⏰ Plan 3 days and 2 nights. Stay in Guling town the first night after climbing Lushan, then spend the second night in Yongxiu county after visiting West Sea.
🍜 In Jiujiang city, “Xunyanglou restaurant” is a must for Poyang Lake fatty fish head and radish cakes. The fish head is tender, and the broth is so good you can eat two extra bowls of rice.
⚠️ Temperature varies greatly on Lushan between morning and evening. Bring a light jacket even in summer. Boat trips on West Sea reduce after 4 PM, so plan accordingly.
Traveling with parents once without hiking will show you how much they enjoy flat ground. Dongting Lake plain, Pearl River estuary, Loess canyon, ancient villages in Jiangnan… pick a direction, book 2 high-speed train tickets, and let your parents be the “young ones” cared for. If you have questions or your city isn’t listed, share in the comments.
