A spiritual Lake
#myhiddengems
So amongst the many lake options, people like to compare como, Maggiore and orta. You see now with experience I can tell, while all of them are beautiful. Of course Como is the most touristy and Maggiore is spectacular. But my personal favourite is this little gem called orta. It has such a spiritual vibe. The spiritual mountain of orta san guilo towers above it and with over 20 chapels in the vicinity. Lake orta is a pilgrimage for st. Francis of assisi.
My trip in June was amongst the best times to visit this lake because with spring there are the colorful cherry blossoms and wildflowers. The summer tourists are yet to arrive. There are such brilliant opportunities for surreal walks. While i could do the usual list of places i visited and you should too. But this is a special place and it is more about the feel. You have to experience it yourself.

Lake Orta
#thingstodo
Lake Orta enchanted me by its otherworldly simplicity, isolation, winding path and that deep misty shade of blue that washed over the whole scene. It is less touristy than Como and has the added attraction of the island with a castle and monastery in the middle of the lake. Adjacent Orta San Giulio isalso a joy to explore as it has a timeless medieval ambience with narrow streets, arches, ancient structures and cobbles.
We stayed in the village of San Giulio for five days and were absolutely charmed by its peacefulness, its beautiful buildings and narrow streets, its shops and restaurants and the friendly people. Although day trippers visit briefly and swell the population, early morning and evening are heaven to wander and gaze at the beauty of the lake which is so glisteningly clear and inviting for a swim on a warm day. Ferries leave the port frequently to visit other villages on the lake.
We would stay here again instead of the larger, more touristed lakes. The nearest train station from Milan is Orta Miasino but you would need to get a taxi into the village down the hill.
Booked a coach trip from Stressa to Lake Orta (via Arona) 41 Euros each. Well worth it! Guide Mateo was excellent. You must go over to the island whilst in Orta (boat 4.50euro return). Free entry on island. Avoid weekends as it will be absolutely full of locals (and I don't blame them).
A gem of a place. But visit soon as it is becoming more popular and busier.
