The Rideau Canal, built in 1832, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007, becoming Canada's 14th World Heritage Site.
The Rideau Canal connects Ottawa on the Ottawa River and Kingston on the shores of Lake Ontario. The canal starts from the east side of Parliament Hill, follows the Rideau River to Rideau Lake, and then takes the Cataraqui River into Lake Ontario, with a total length of 202 kilometers.
There are 49 locks and 53 dams on the Rideau Canal. During this self-driving trip, I drove more than 200 kilometers from Ottawa to Kingston, visiting Ottawa Locks 1-8, Smiths Falls Locks 29-31, Upper and Lower Beveridges Locks 33-34, and Kingston Mills Locks 46-49 along the way.
The Rideau Canal is truly an engineering marvel of the 18th century. Fortunately, most of the facilities of the Rideau Canal still retain their appearance from more than 190 years ago. Although large ships no longer pass through the canal, small boats such as yachts still navigate it normally.
