September Travel Recommendation: Dai County, Xinzhou | A Living Ancient City.
| A living ancient city. 📍 Dai County, formerly known as Dai Prefecture, is under the jurisdiction of Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. It is 20 kilometers north of Yanmen Pass and has been a frontier fortress and military town guarding the north throughout the ages. "The Yinshan Mountains stretch north for 3,000 miles, and the first prefecture south of the Zise Pass", the small county has three national protected units: Bianjing Tower, Confucian Temple, and Ashoka Pagoda. Liang Sicheng once praised the Dai Prefecture Ancient City as "a wonderful plan", which is enough to show its profound historical and cultural heritage.
🏯 This is the last city inside Yanmen Pass, a historical and cultural city of China, and a severely underestimated treasure city. Stroll through the Dai Prefecture Ancient City and encounter historical civilizations scattered throughout the streets and alleys.
🎓 Confucian Temple 🎓
The Dai County Confucian Temple faces south, with three courtyards in front, middle, and back. It adopts a symmetrical layout on the central axis. From south to north, they are Wanrenfang, Lingxing Gate, Panchi, Jimen, Dacheng Hall, and Jingyi Pavilion. In front of Jimen, there are three temples: Minghuan, Xianxian, and Jiexiao. On both sides of Dacheng Hall, there are fifteen corridors. The Dai County Confucian Temple is large and well-preserved. It is a valuable material for studying the development of Chinese cultural education. The glazed dragon in the middle of the wall of the Lingxing Gate and the brick carvings below the flying eaves are of high historical and artistic value. 🍃
🌟 Martial Temple 🌟
The Dai Prefecture Martial Temple faces east. There are a pair of stone lions and a flagpole in front of the gate. Drum towers and bell towers are built in the north and south. There are five archways, with the words "Martial Temple" and "Zhuangmu Zhongwu" written on the plaque of the middle archway. The overall architecture is magnificent. The main hall of the Martial Temple is built on a one-meter-high platform. The architecture is magnificent, the structure is exquisite, and the atmosphere is solemn. It has a typical northern Jin and Yuan architectural style. It is the only existing and oldest hip-and-gable roof wooden structure in Dai County, with a history of 691 years. 🎖
🛡 Bianjing Tower 🛡
Bianjing Tower, commonly known as Drum Tower, also known as Qiaolou, means "pacifying the border and calming the people". It was a military facility in ancient times for watching enemies, beating drums, and commanding operations. It was built by Lu Zhonghe, Marquis of Ji'an, who was demoted to Dai County to arrest thieves during the early Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. Bianjing Tower is magnificent, simple, and ancient. The tower base is high, the beams are exquisite, and the structure is tight and reasonable. After hundreds of years of wind and rain erosion and multiple earthquakes, it is still intact. 🔭
🛡 Ashoka Pagoda 🛡
Ashoka Pagoda is located in the northeast of the county government in Dai County, facing Bianjing Tower. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit. Commonly known as the Pagoda, it was originally the pagoda of Yuanguo Temple in Dai County. The pagoda was first built in 601 AD during the Sui Dynasty. It was originally a wooden pagoda and was destroyed in 842 AD during the Huichang period of the Tang Dynasty. It was rebuilt in 847 AD during the Dazhong period. After several ups and downs, it was rebuilt as a brick pagoda in 1275 AD. Today's Ashoka Pagoda is located in the courtyard of the Dai County Government. Only the gate of this ancient government office is still in its original style.
🚶♂️ Tour route: Confucian Temple🔜 Bianjing Tower🔜 Ashoka Pagoda, the three attractions are very close, the whole journey is about 1.6km, no backtracking.
🎫 Tickets: Bianjing Tower + Confucian Temple joint ticket 40r, you can climb the Bianjing Tower city wall, very worthwhile.
🕘 Tour time: 2-3 hours

China's First Pass: Yanmen Pass
Since the Qin and Han dynasties, the northern part of Shanxi has been the center of rule for various northern dynasties, becoming a frontier area for ethnic integration.
Yanmen Pass, located in the Yanmen Mountains about 20 kilometers north of Daixian County in Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, is an important pass on the Great Wall. Known for its danger, it is hailed as 'China's First Pass,' with the saying 'Among the nine passes under heaven, Yanmen is the first.' It is collectively known as the 'Outer Three Passes' along with Ningwu Pass and Pianguan Pass.
Yanmen Pass and its location in Daixian have historically been a passage for northern ethnic groups invading the interior. Therefore, Yanmen Pass has always been a strategic military point. From the 4th century BC to the 20th century, there have been more than 140 battles here, according to incomplete statistics, showing that it is indeed a place of military contention.
Yanmen Pass connects Datong to the north and Taiyuan to the south. It can advance into the vast grasslands or retreat to defend the thousand-mile central plains, making its strategic position extremely important.
Famous generals of the Han dynasty such as Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, and Li Guang have all galloped inside and outside the ancient Yanmen Pass, repeatedly defeating the Xiongnu and making significant contributions. General Li Guang, known as the 'Monkey Arm General,' fought the Xiongnu dozens of times while serving as the governor of Dai Commandery, Yanmen, and Yunzhong, earning the nickname 'Flying General' from the Xiongnu.
During the Northern Song dynasty, Yanmen Pass was the main battlefield in the confrontation between the Song and Liao dynasties, with over 200 wars occurring. Major historical events such as the 'Capture of the Two Emperors of Song' and the 'Yang Family Generals guarding the Three Passes' took place here. Yanmen Pass is also the site of the original story of the Yang Family Generals. The famous Northern Song general Yang Ye achieved a great victory over the Liao army here, earning the title 'Yang the Invincible.'
This is also where the idiom 'Sinking Fish and Falling Geese' originated. During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Han, the stunning beauty Wang Zhaojun left through this pass to marry the Xiongnu, securing 50 years of peace. When she played the zither on her horse, the southward-flying geese heard the music and saw the beautiful woman on horseback, forgetting to flap their wings and falling to the ground. Thus, Wang Zhaojun earned the nickname 'Falling Geese.'
The entrance fee for the scenic area is 90 yuan for adults (83 yuan online) and 45 yuan for students at half price. Some guides have questioned how this section of the Great Wall earned a 5A rating and whether it is worth the price, but I think it depends on personal perspective. After all, money should be spent where necessary, and knowledge should be gained where possible.
Use Gaode Navigation to the Yanmen Pass North Gate parking lot. Once you park your car, you can head to the main entrance. The road from the main entrance to the Mingyue Tower ticket checkpoint requires a mandatory ride on the scenic area's electric shuttle, costing 10 yuan per person round trip.

2 Days and 1 Night in Dai County
I totally get that feeling of wanting a place to stay untouched, yet also desiring for others to discover its beauty and stories. Dai County has so much hidden charm—its authenticity, history, and culture—but it's only a matter of time before more people find their way there. I can imagine how incredible it would be to see Bian Jing Lou, the largest wooden drum tower in China, come alive with visitors while still retaining its deep historical presence.
The idea of sharing the grandeur of Yanmen Pass, where you can still hear the echo of war drums across the Great Wall 🥁, is exhilarating. And for more people to admire the intricate beauty of the Confucian Temple 🏯 in all its majesty, from the fine carvings to the flying peacock glazed tiles 🦚, would be such a gift for those who appreciate cultural heritage.
It's that balance between preserving the serenity 🌿 of the place and sharing its richness with the world. Even though Dai County remains a quiet treasure now, there's no doubt that the blend of ancient stories 📜, remarkable architecture 🏛️, and local life will soon put it "on fire" 🔥 in the travel world.

Visit Yanmen Pass.
☘️☘️☘️Yanmen Pass is known as the "First Pass of China". It connects Datong in the north and Taiyuan in the south. It can control the vast grasslands and defend the Guanzhong region. It has been a famous strategic pass in northern China since ancient times. Since the Zhao Wuling King of the Warring States Period, Yanmen Pass has been regarded as a strategic location by all dynasties. The current Yanmen Pass Scenic Area is a reconstruction of the Ming Dynasty Yanmen Pass ruins. The scenic area is very large. To enter the scenic area, you need to take a shuttle bus to the Yang Family General Sculpture. Then, from Mingyue Tower - Bianmao Street - North Gate. The main scenic area is inside the North Gate, which is the original Wengcheng Gate. On the ancient pass road under the gate, there are traces of ancient cart ruts. The main scenic area includes Wengcheng Gate, Dili Gate and Yang Liulang Temple, Guan Office, Tianxian Gate and Guan Tower, Zhenbian Temple, Ancient Pass Road, Stele Forest, Enemy Tower, etc. Due to the large size of the scenic area and the long ancient pass road, it takes at least 2-3 hours to visit all the attractions.
There are many historical sites to visit near Yanmen Pass, such as the Ming Guangwu Great Wall Ruins, the tombs of Han Dynasty border generals, and the ancient city of Dai County. The Guangwu Ming Great Wall Ruins are also worth visiting. Most of the Yanmen Pass Scenic Area is rebuilt, only the Guangwu Ming Great Wall has not been artificially restored. It is one of the most complete brick-faced Ming Great Walls in existence. The local government has only restored the iconic "Moon Gate" of the Guangwu Ming Great Wall, while the other remaining Great Walls have been preserved in their original state. The remaining sections of the original Great Wall, built on the mountain, look quite old from afar. If you have enough time, after visiting the main scenic area of Yanmen Pass and the Ming Guangwu Great Wall Ruins, you can also visit the tombs of Han Dynasty border generals and the ancient city of Dai County.
👀Note:
1. Visiting Yanmen Pass is quite physically demanding, especially the main scenic area of Yanmen Pass and the Ming Guangwu Ming Great Wall, where there are many places to climb. Please arrange your time to visit the scenic area according to your physical strength.
2. Although the shuttle bus in the main scenic area is a short distance, it can save some energy. It is still recommended for people with poor physical strength to take it.
3. If the weather is sunny, be sure to prepare for sun protection. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sun protection clothing. During the tour, you will be exposed to the sun a lot, so you need to cover yourself from top to bottom.

Yanmen Pass Travel Guide🫰It can be considered as climbing the Great Wall
Originally, I wanted to share all the famous mountains and rivers I have visited with everyone before switching topics, but since all the current spots are in Shanxi, let me take everyone through Shanxi first, and then switch to other places. Later, I will release a special guide on must-visit spots in Shanxi. Please continue to follow, dear friends.
After the division of Jin by the Han, Wei, and Zhao families, the Zhao State, located at the northernmost part, was constantly harassed by the Xiongnu. To counter the Xiongnu, Yanmen was built. During the Han and Tang dynasties, Yanmen Pass continued to develop, reaching its peak in the Song dynasty. After the Yuan dynasty, the expansion of the national territory made Yanmen Pass an inner pass, and its military significance gradually declined. Historically, Li Mu, Meng Tian, Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, Li Guang, and the Yang family generals all stationed here. Princess Zhaojun also passed through here to marry beyond the border. Additionally, with the endorsement of Qiao Feng from 'Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils,' it is undoubtedly the 'First Pass of China.'
📍Detailed Address: Daixian, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, 15 kilometers from the county town
🚗Transportation Guide: There are direct tourist buses from Daixian Bus Station to Yanmen Pass, or you can take a taxi, which is very convenient
🕙Tour Time: About 2 hours for the small loop, about 4 hours from Mingyue Tower entering and exiting the South Gate
💰Ticket Price: 90 yuan
📌Small Tips: 1. There is a shuttle bus from the visitor center to the scenic area entrance, round trip 20 yuan (forgot the exact amount, but it's not expensive), recommended to take.
2. For the small loop, after passing through the border trade street to the first Wengcheng, you can play along the city wall clockwise or counterclockwise, passing through Yanta, Tianxian Gate, and West City Gate, forming a closed loop.
3. Enter from Mingyue Tower and exit from the South Gate, which means exiting from Tianxian Gate. There is a small road, follow it and you will exit from the South Gate of the scenic area. Along the way, there are attractions such as Warring States stone carvings and Zhaojun's departure reliefs, suitable for hiking enthusiasts.
Welcome to like and follow, dear friends.

The unparalleled strategic location of the three borders, the most revered of the nine passes - Yanmen Pass, Shanxi
During the Ming Dynasty, in order to strengthen the defense of Beijing, two layers of defense lines were set up relying on the Great Wall. The eastern side included Juyong Pass, Zijing Pass, and Daoma Pass, known as the 'Inner Three Passes', while the western side in Shanxi included Yanmen Pass, Ningwu Pass, and Piantou Pass, known as the 'Outer Three Passes'.
Located north of Dai County in Xinzhou City, Shanxi, Yanmen Pass, as one of the 'Outer Three Passes', is an important pass on the Great Wall, renowned for its 'danger' and honored as the 'First Pass of China'.
Throughout history, Yanmen Pass has held significant strategic importance. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was a repeatedly contested natural stronghold; during the Qin and Han periods, it became a crucial base for General Meng Tian of the Qin Dynasty in his campaigns against the Xiongnu; it was officially established as a pass during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties; during the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties periods, the Tang army frequently crossed this pass to attack the Xiongnu to the north; during the Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan periods, the Yang family made their mark here; and it underwent extensive renovations during the Ming Dynasty. Additionally, Yanmen Pass is also the place where Wang Zhaojun, the daughter of the Yanmen, passed through on her journey to the frontier.
Friendly reminder: Most of the attractions at Yanmen Pass are concentrated on the north side of the scenic area, so it is recommended to navigate to the north gate for entry.

Northern route: Houyaopu, Mingyue Tower, Yanmen Pass Village, Wengcheng Gate, Dili Gate, and the temples of Yang Liulang, Zhenbian, Guanling, Zhuangshi Pavilion, Yunji Quan and Yan Pool, Fujia Ping, Qianyaopu. The order of the southern route is the exact opposite of the northern route. However, the southern route is not recommended, it's all uphill!
Both the northern and southern routes have large service areas, and there are folk villages where you can stay.

Attacking an ancient pass city was too difficult! Climbing to the base of the city walls would leave one's legs weak
The Great Wall is famous for its numerous strategic passes, with Shanhaiguan in the east and Jiayuguan in the west, and in between, there are Niangziguan and Yanmenguan. Each pass city is a formidable fortress, easy to defend but hard to attack.
Traveling from Dai County to Yanmenguan, one would pass through the Yanmenguan ambush site, a region with winding mountains that indeed makes for an excellent spot for ambushes.
The mountain roads are many, and it's hard to tell how long it took to finally reach the Yanmenguan scenic area.
Yanmenguan is located on the Gouzhu Mountain ridge north of the ancient city of Daizhou. It controls the Central Plains to the south and the desert frontier to the north, and is a grand military defense project from ancient China. It was known as Beiling and Xi in ancient times, listed as the foremost of the Nine Fortified Passes during the Warring States period, called one of the Northern Court's Three Passes during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and known as one of the Inner Three Passes of Shanxi during the Ming Dynasty.
Yanmenguan has a Wengcheng (jar-shaped city). The gate of the Wengcheng, commonly known as the 'Small North Gate', has a stone archway on top, with a plaque inscribed with the three large characters 'Yanmenguan'.
The Yanmenguan scenic area is mainly divided into two parts: the Ancient Yanmenguan scenic area and the Ming Yanmenguan scenic area.

The world's foremost formidable pass, Yanmen Pass
Once visited, no regrets...
The world's foremost formidable pass, Yanmen Pass. Once visited, no regrets...
🙃Although not as grand and magnificent as the Badaling Great Wall, the terrain here is perilous, and the scenery is majestic and splendid. Climbing the Great Wall is stress-free throughout the journey. After briskly walking for over two hours and standing on the city wall, one can't help but reflect on history, hearing that over 1700 battles of various sizes have taken place here.
🌹It's best to go to the scenic area early when there are fewer people. Climbing the Great Wall is stress-free throughout the journey. It takes just over two hours if you walk briskly, and if you walk and rest intermittently, it takes about three to four hours, which I think is suitable for all ages. At the entrance of the scenic area, there is a special product commercial street where you can try some local delicacies. When leaving the scenic area, having something to eat, drink, and buy can relieve the fatigue of climbing the Great Wall. There are also performances in the scenic area, which are nice to watch when resting.

Explore the Magnificent Scenery of Yanmen Pass: A Super Detailed Guide
Yanmen Pass is famous for its perilous terrain and is hailed as 'the foremost of the nine strategic passes under heaven.' Passing through this natural barrier, you can see the mouths of three Great Walls. If you love mountaineering, be sure to climb to the top to experience the grandeur of the continuous mountain ranges, and you will be amazed at the wisdom of the ancients.
The thing I love the most is that Yanmen Pass offers different climbing routes for different groups of people, filled with a humanistic touch.
🚨 Travel Tips:
- Yanmen Pass has two entrances: the North Gate and the South Gate. It is recommended to start the tour from the North Gate (the South Gate is relatively far). I chose the North Gate, and it took about two hours to finish the tour.
- It takes about 3 minutes by car from the scenic area entrance to Mingyue Tower (ticket checkpoint). If you don't want to walk, you can take the eco-friendly vehicle inside the scenic area (10 yuan/person round trip). Personally, I suggest that if you don't mind walking, you can walk from the entrance (it's really not far, unlike what the driver said about 2 kilometers).
- Dining in the scenic area is relatively cheap, mainly noodle dishes. There are some restaurants and small shops on the border trade street where you can eat, buy water, and also find local specialties (such as Shanxi's aged vinegar, yellow wine, coconut powder, etc.).
🚗 Transportation Guide:
- It is recommended to drive there, about 100 kilometers from Xinzhou City.
- You can also depart from Dai County, where you can stay in advance (e.g., Lihua Hotel), about 15 kilometers from the North Gate and about 32 kilometers from the South Gate.
🎫 Ticket Information:
- Peak season (April 1 to October 31) tickets are 90 yuan/person, off-season tickets are 45 yuan/person.
- Eco-friendly vehicle fee is 10 yuan/person (round trip).
- Parking fee is 5 yuan/vehicle (no time limit).

Even Qiao Feng couldn't escape the snowscape of Yanmen Pass!
I was originally going to Foguang Temple,
but without snow chains, I headed for Yanmen Pass instead. As I drove, I marveled, isn't this Qiao Feng's home? The scenery is truly beautiful,
but it's also truly inescapable, so I obediently retreated.
Why is it that the south is already enjoying the blossoming of spring, while the great north is still amidst the flurry of heavy snow...

Beyond Yanmenguan, there is no trace of human smoke
📜About Yanmenguan
The black cloud presses the city and the city is about to collapse, the armor shines towards the sun and the golden scales open.
Li Mu, Meng Tian, Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, Li Guang, Xue Rengui, Yang's generals... A long list of historical generals is endless.
In terms of historical depth, Yanmenguan connects the desert in the north and the Central Plains in the south. It has been a sensitive location for the Chinese nation since the Yuan Dynasty. Shanhaiguan has to call it a predecessor. Among the nine barriers in the world, Yanmenguan ranks first.
Yanmenguan
🌈Highlights:
The Yanmenguan in winter (off-season) is desolate and yellow in the north, white snow and green in the south, the north wind is bleak, there is no trace of human smoke inside and outside the Great Wall, there are few tourists, it is too suitable for slowly galloping in the ancient times.
🚗Address and transportation:
Because it is located at the junction of Xinzhou and Shuozhou, far from the city, the transportation is not very convenient, you have to charter a car or follow a group to travel, and it is convenient to place an order on the APP online.
🎫Ticket information:
55 yuan/person. Opening hours are 08:30-17:00 in the off-season; 08:00-17:30 in the peak season
✨Tips:
The section of the Great Wall on the right hand side when entering the city is a suspicious soldier, and the main line of defense is on the left. Yanmenguan as a whole is a circle, not large in area, and the steps are relatively flat. It is more than enough for 2-3 hours. Especially pay attention to the winter snow and ice, which is easy to slip, and pay special attention to safety.

Qiao Feng sacrificed here, and Zhaojun left the border from here
As a child, I didn't understand why Qiao Feng, a man of great stature, was hard to be accepted by the world. When I grew up, I realized that life is always like a tree wanting to be quiet but the wind does not stop, and there are so many things that are beyond one's control and feelings. This lifelong unsolvable puzzle has been clearly sung by 'Hard to Recite Sutra'. Today, let's take you to Yanmenguan in Daixian County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, to see what different scenery is here. With the popular TV series 'Tianlong Babu', whether you know where Yanmenguan is or whether you have been there, you will not feel strange to it. Not only that, but it is also worth mentioning that Yanmenguan is both the place where Qiao Feng sacrificed and Zhaojun left the border from here. So, the question is, why can Yanmenguan become the first pass of China? This is mainly because Yanmenguan is a pass on the inner Great Wall line of the Ming Dynasty. It is known as the 'outer three passes' together with Ningwuguan and Pianguan, and it is mainly known for its 'danger'. Yanmenguan has been an important pass for the central plains dynasty to resist the invasion of northern nomadic nations since ancient times. The earliest history here can be traced back to the battle between King Wuling of Zhao and the Huns during the Warring States Period. Therefore, Yanmenguan is known as 'the first pass of China'.

Yanmenguan Scenic Area
Yanmenguan is located in Yanmen Mountain, about 20 kilometers north of Daixian County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, China. It is an important pass on the Great Wall, known for its danger, and is known as the 'First Pass of China'. During the Warring States Period, Li Mu was ordered to stay in Yanmenguan to guard against the Huns and prevent the Huns from harassing the border people of Zhao. After Qin Shihuang unified the six countries, he sent the general Meng Tian to lead 300,000 troops from Yanmenguan to drive the Huns to the north of Yinshan, and built the Great Wall. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty ordered the repair of Yanmenguan, and famous generals such as Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, and Li Guang had galloped inside and outside the ancient pass of Yanmenguan, repeatedly defeating the Huns and making great contributions. During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Han, Wang Zhaojun was married from Yanmenguan. The name of Yanmenguan began in the early Tang Dynasty. In the early Northern Song Dynasty, the area around Yanmenguan was a fiercely contested battlefield between Song and Liao. The patriotic general Yang Ye and his Yang family generals have all shown their talents here and made contributions to the country. In 2001, Yanmenguan was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In 2014, Yanmenguan Scenic Area was awarded the title of China's Best Cultural Tourism Sightseeing Destination, and Yanmenguan Scenic Area also won the titles of 'National 5A Tourist Scenic Area' and 'Top Ten Tourism Brands in Shanxi'.

Yanmenguan, known as the 'First Wonder of the World', what makes it so special?
Historically, when the Jin, Hebei, Inner Mongolia and other ethnic groups invaded from the south, they often invaded from the north of Yanmenguan, resulting in more than a hundred wars, including the famous battles between the Xianbei and the Turks, the Five Hu Chaos, the Han-Tang Transition, the Siege of the Northern Song Dynasty, and the Resistance of the Southern Song Dynasty. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there have been dozens of battles between the peasant rebel army led by Li Zicheng and the Qing Dynasty. Therefore, it is known as the 'First Pass of the Great Wall', 'First Barrier of China', 'First Stronghold of the World', 'First Great Wall of China', 'First Wonder of the World', and other reputations. Yanmenguan is one of the longest existing, most complex architectural structures, and most complete and complex military functions in Chinese history. It is located 15 kilometers southeast of Daixian County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, at 32 degrees north latitude. It is the 'Second Throat' of the ancient Great Wall of China, and after Yan and Zhao in Chinese history, it once again became a military stronghold where the Central Plains and the northern minorities traded and competed for high ground. It is a product of the co-progression and long-term coexistence of the Central Plains and the minorities, and also one of the important historical and cultural relics and historical and cultural city cards of the great integration period of ancient Chinese ethnic groups with strategic significance. It has played an immeasurable role and value in studying the formation and development of the ancient Chinese ethnic economy!
