Follow in the footsteps of Hei Wukong and bring your family to Yuhuang Pavilion in Yu County.
Kids, today I'm going to share a hidden gem with you - Yuhuang Pavilion in Yu County, Hebei.
🍡Yuhuang Pavilion is located on the north city wall of Yu County. Its official name is "Yuzhou Yuhuang Pavilion", a temple dedicated to the Jade Emperor.
You can climb the city wall from the side door of Yuhuang Pavilion and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Yu County. Yuhuang Pavilion consists of a memorial archway, a hall of heavenly kings, a side room, a bell and drum tower, and a Jade Emperor Hall. The Jade Emperor Hall faces south, with a width of five rooms and a depth of four rooms. It has a triple-eave hip and gable roof with glazed tiles. There are historical relics such as the rebuilt stele forest under the eaves of the hall. Although it has experienced the vicissitudes of history, the exquisite and majestic architectural charm is breathtaking.
🌟Recommended attractions:
- Thirty-six Lei Gong murals: This theme is really rare. There are thirty-six Lei Gong, including twelve each of heavenly thunder, earthly thunder, and human thunder. Each Lei Gong has a nameplate on his waist, which is very interesting.
- Fengshen Picture: The "Six Yu" of Taoism, the Jade Emperor and his buddies. There is only one administrator in the entire Yuhuang Pavilion. He is a jack of all trades. The first sentence when he meets you is "Sorry to keep you waiting". He also said that due to the protection of cultural relics, the hall can only be visited by natural light, and you can take pictures of murals without flash.
🍜Recommended food:
Tofu, dried tofu, tofu skin and other soy products in Nuanquan Ancient Town, Yu County, as well as Yu County's yellow cake, buckwheat Hele and other special delicacies.
💡Tips:
- Yuhuang Pavilion has a unique architectural style. Tourists can enjoy exquisite murals and wood carvings, but please protect cultural relics and do not touch or damage them.
- After climbing the city wall, pay attention to safety and do not climb or lean against the city wall.
- The climate in Yu County is relatively dry, so tourists should pay attention to moisturizing and sun protection.
Come and play with your family and children.

Summer Vacation Treasure Spots in the Suburbs of Beijing | Yu County, This Small Town is Really Beautiful
With the arrival of summer vacation, if you want to find a less crowded and interesting place, this place is really worth it! As the hometown of intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting, it is also one of the Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun, with rich cultural history and stories.
Travel Tips:
Yuhuang Pavilion: An ancient building from the Ming Dynasty, it has a grand and magnificent feeling. The ancient city wall shows the grandeur of the past, and it's great for taking photos📷.
Nuanquan Ancient Town: It's like traveling back to the ancient towns of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in an instant. The thousand-year-old Weizhou Ancient City is also the birthplace of the Dashuhua (tree flower) performance. Here, you can visit Beiguan Fort, Zhongxiaobao Fort, and Xigubao Fort. Northern ancient towns always have an indescribable sense of desolation.
Paper-cutting Master: This is probably the most amazing part for us. Each piece of work seems to have been polished by time, showcasing the profoundness of Chinese culture through the exquisite skills of the craftsmen. Here, you can try it yourself. I also saw that 🌟Xiao Zhan had visited here.

Yuhuang Pavilion in Weizhou Ancient City | Admire the beauty of the city walls and attics - Yuhuang Pavilion
📍Yuhuang Pavilion
This landmark building of Weizhou Ancient City has withstood the test of time for six hundred years. Due to its central location in the Sixteen Prefectures, Weizhou has always been a strategic border town since ancient times.
In the second year of the Daxiang era of the Later Zhou Dynasty (581 AD), after Qin Shi Huang destroyed the six states and unified China, this "Jingbian Tower" was built to prevent the invasion of the Xiongnu. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by an earthquake in the third year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1739 AD), and after reconstruction, it was renamed "Yuhuang Pavilion" 🏛 in honor of the Jade Emperor.
According to the records of "Weizhou Annals", there were 24 towers on the ancient city walls, but this tower was the most magnificent and imposing.
The site consists of two courtyards, with the Yuhuang Pavilion built on top of the city walls. The pavilion's roof features a triple-eaved Xieshan style, with layered floors and pavilions that look simple yet solid. It's a symmetrical structure that I particularly like, flanked by bell and drum towers on both sides. The main hall's ridge is decorated with glazed floral ridges, with glazed coiling dragons and ceramic mythical creatures at both ends, exquisitely unique.
Inside the hall, there is a statue of the Jade Emperor, and the walls on both sides are painted with images of the Five Emperors and the Queen Mother of the West, as well as the mythological "Fengshen Map" and "Thirty-Six Thunder Generals" ⚡️.
My fondness for the murals made me watch for a long time, and the names marked on them seem to come from the "Thirty-Six Thunder Generals" in "Daofa Huiyuan".
There are eight stone steles 🪦 in the corridor in front of the attic, seven of which are reconstruction steles, showing the importance attached to it.
Walking around the ancient city wall, one can feel the desolation of the northern wind beneath the strategic border town, overlooking the entire Weizhou Ancient City, wondering what the mood of the soldiers guarding the border was like at that time.

The niche travel destination Yuzhou Ancient City
The ancient city of Yuxian is divided into several parts, but they are basically within the old city. Driving is extremely inconvenient as the roads are generally very narrow, and many alleys shown on navigation are just wide enough for one car to pass through. You need to seize the opportunity to drive through immediately, otherwise, you'll have to wait.
We visited the Yuhuang Pavilion, climbed the city tower, and went to the Nanan Temple Pagoda. The places are not very big, but they all require tickets. If you have plenty of time, you might want to go inside for a visit. If you're short on time, you could just pass by and check in.
