Qumarleb County travel guide and discussion

Sisters! When you go to Qinghai, don’t just focus on the salt lakes and Chaka‼️ This time I went all in, flooring it into the Hoh Xil no-man’s land— a world natural heritage site, one of China’s largest uninhabited areas, known as the “forbidden zone of life.” What happened? I cried😭 Not from fear, but moved to tears! 📍 Where is Hoh Xil? Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. About 200 km south from Golmud along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109). The core area is near the Sonam Dargye protection station. 🚗 How to get there? ⚠️ Important reminder: Hoh Xil is not a tourist attraction! No tickets are required, but you must respect nature. Self-drive: Golmud → Kunlun Pass → Budo Spring → Sonam Dargye protection station → Tuotuo River. The entire route is paved, but altitude rises from 2,800 m to 4,600 m, so be sure to prevent altitude sickness. Charter/shared ride: Local travel agencies in Golmud offer one- or two-day tours to Hoh Xil, priced at 800–1,500 CNY per person. Drivers know the roads and can act as guides. Don’t hike on your own: This is no joke. No signal, wild animals, extreme weather— even locals don’t dare. 📅 Best time: June–August (weather is relatively stable, Tibetan antelope calving season, you can see lambs running with their mothers) 📸 Highlights & photo tips 1️⃣ Tibetan antelope 🦌 Near Sonam Dargye protection station, easiest to spot between 5–7 PM. Remember: stay quiet, don’t get out to chase! Use a telephoto lens (phone cameras won’t cut it, renting a camera is recommended). Seeing their white rumps as they run is super heartwarming💖 2️⃣ Kunlun Pass 🏔️ At 4,767 m altitude, surrounded by endless snow-capped mountains and fluttering prayer flags. You can stop here to take photos, but it’s windy and cold, so wear a windbreaker. 3️⃣ Budo Spring 💧 A magical spring that never freezes. Water temperature stays near 0°C year-round but never freezes. The ice-blue spring water against the snowy background is stunning. 4️⃣ Hoh Xil snow mountains and wilderness The overwhelming vastness can’t be captured even one-thousandth by a phone. Use a wide-angle lens, crouch low, and frame the sky, road, and wilderness together with a caption like “No one is here, yet life thrives.” ⚠️ Survival guide (key points!) Altitude sickness: Take Rhodiola 2 days in advance, bring oxygen, avoid bathing and strenuous activity. Clothing: Down jacket + windproof outerwear. It can snow even in summer❄️ Food: Self-heating rice, chocolate, hot water. No convenience stores along the way. Toilets: None! Use a cloth for privacy in the wild... Phone signal: Basically none once you enter the mountains. Download offline maps in advance. Don’t litter: Every plastic bag could be mistaken for food by Tibetan antelopes and cause death. 💡 Why strongly recommend? Because this is not a tourist spot, it’s the last pure land on earth. When your eyes meet those of a Tibetan antelope, you’ll understand what “life” really means. No commercial noise, only wind, snow mountains, and freedom. It’s not for enjoyment, it’s for reverence. Before you go, watch the movie Hoh Xil to better understand the weight of this land. After you go, remember to share your story with me—I’ll be waiting in the comments✨

When it comes to the Kunlun Mountains, most people have heard of its legends. The Kunlun World Geopark is located in the heartland of this "Ancestor of Ten Thousand Mountains." Stretching across western Qinghai, it combines majestic mountains, glaciers, canyons, and ancient landforms. It boasts magnificent natural scenery sculpted over billions of years and countless mythological tales. Stepping here, you can understand the unique grandeur and mystery of Kunlun. The park is situated south of Golmud City, built around the main Kunlun mountain range, with an average altitude exceeding 4,000 meters. It is a representative geological secret on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Over billions of years, tectonic movements, glacial erosion, and weathering have created richly layered geological landscapes. As a world-class geopark, it preserves the geological traces of plateau uplift and glacier evolution intact and serves as a natural classroom for studying the geomorphological changes of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Far from urban noise, the endless mountain ranges and vast, desolate skies fully display the bold spirit of the western mountains. The entire park is full of highlights, with every scene unforgettable. The Kunlun Mountain Pass is a must-visit, marked by towering stone monuments and sculptures. Standing here, you can gaze at the overlapping mountain ranges stretching into the distance with an incredibly broad view. The famous Nachitai Spring flows year-round, its water clear and sweet, forming a lively pool in this cold region, especially vibrant. Further inside, the Kunlun Grand Canyon is steep and rugged, with colorful rock walls and a deep, narrow gorge. Walking through it, you can feel the power of nature’s craftsmanship. The majestic Yuzhu Peak is covered with snow and ice all year, its snowy summit piercing the clouds. The white snow contrasts with the deep blue sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Along the way, you can also see uniquely shaped strange rocks and glacial erosion landforms, with every step revealing the unique charm of geological wonders. Kunlun Mountain has been a cultural sanctuary since ancient times, where mythology and humanity intertwine. It has been revered as "China’s First Sacred Mountain" from ancient times to the present. Legends such as the Queen Mother’s Jade Pool and the immortal cultivation realm have been passed down through generations, casting a romantic and mysterious aura over the mountains. It is also an important section of the ancient Silk Road and the Qiangzhong Road, where caravans and travelers once passed, leaving a long historical imprint. The local ethnic groups living nearby hold deep reverence for Kunlun Mountain, and the sacred mountain belief is integrated into daily life, adding a warm cultural layer to this vast land. Finally, here are some practical travel tips. The best time to visit is from June to September when the temperature is suitable and roads are accessible. The park is at high altitude, so be sure to prepare for altitude sickness and avoid strenuous activities. The plateau has strong UV rays and large temperature differences between day and night, so sunscreen hats, sunglasses, and windproof thick jackets are essential. The scenic area is vast with widely spaced attractions, so self-driving or joining an official tour group is recommended. Please protect nature throughout your visit by not littering and preserving this pristine landscape. Dominating the plateau, Kunlun Mountain offers magnificent rivers and mountains and flowing myths. Enter Kunlun World Geopark, feel the vastness of heaven and earth at the foot of the sacred mountain, encounter natural wonders and millennia-old culture, and gain an unforgettable plateau journey.

I'm not going to Delingha anymore!! I want to go further, to Kekexili where Duojie patrolled his whole life, to Dunhuang where Baiju never went, to the Qinghai-Gansu loop that my camera never finished shooting. 🌲|Chasing the roots of the "Tree of Life," I traveled 3,000 kilometers No turning back, no rushing. I just want to hear the crack once on the blue ice of Qinghai Lake, wait outside Sonam Dargye Station for a herd of Tibetan antelopes to cross the road, and be a person carved by the wind at the sunset of the colorful Danxia. 🚩8 days, a journey about taking root Day 1: Xining—Riyue Mountain—Qinghai Lake—Chaka Town [Stay] Day 2: Chaka Salt Lake—Chaerhan Salt Lake—Golmud [Stay] Day 3: Golmud—Kunlun Mountain Pass—Kekexili Viewing Platform—Sonam Dargye Protection Station—Golmud [Stay] Day 4: Golmud—315 U-shaped Highway—Water Yadan—Emerald Lake—Dachaidan [Stay] Day 5: Dachaidan—Nanbaxian Yadan Landform—Heidushan—Dunhuang [Stay] Day 6: Morning at Mogao Caves—Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring—Dunhuang [Stay] city center Day 7: Dunhuang—Jiayuguan—Zhangye Danxia Landform—Zhangye City [Stay] Day 8: Zhangye—Bianduxia—Qilian Grassland—Distant view of Gangshika Snow Mountain—End in Xining. 📌 Traveling in Qinghai, you only understand in the off-season: · The mirror surface of Chaka Salt Lake has no footprints, only you and the snowy mountains in the reflection · No queues at Emerald Lake, you can have the entire turquoise mine to yourself · Volunteers at Sonam Dargye Station are not busy and will tell you the migration map of Tibetan antelopes, their eyes welling up as they speak 🎞️| In the drama, someone asked Duojie: "Kekexili has nothing, why do you still guard it?" Duojie pointed to the Tibetan antelopes grazing in the distance: "If they are here, so am I." From Qinghai Lake to Dunhuang, from Kunlun Mountains to Qilian Mountains. Gradually understanding— The Tree of Life does not grow in lush, fertile places. It grows in permafrost zones, in the crevices of wind-eroded Yadan, in the worn boots of mountain patrol members, in the hearts of everyone who leaves Qinghai but keeps looking back. Not all roots must be planted in hometowns. Some roots, planted in oxygen-poor heights, can still grow into someone else's tree. · 🚘【Northwest Transportation Guide】 ✈️Major transport: Fly to Xining Caojiabao Airport / Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport 🚗Local transport: Self-driving recommended with car pick-up at Xining/Dunhuang stores 🚌Public transport: Attractions are too scattered! Strongly recommend carpooling/private car🚙 🌟【Qinghai-Gansu Travel "Avoid" List】 ❌Don't join low-price tours, too many traps to cry over😭 ❌Only buy A-class tickets for Mogao Caves! B-class tickets cover only 4 caves and no time selection⏳ ❌Sun protection is a must! Physical sunscreen > chemical sunscreen, hat + arm sleeves are the ultimate combo🧢 ❌Respect local customs! No bare shoulders or legs in temples🙏 ❌Book accommodation in advance! Last-minute bookings cost twice as much💸 🌟【Qinghai-Gansu Travel "Must-Do" List】 ✅Altitude caution: Qinghai Lake is 3,200 meters above sea level, avoid running or jumping! Altitude sickness risk🏔️ ✅Time difference reminder: Northwest gets dark late, you can slightly delay your schedule🌄 ✅Best photo times: Soft light in early morning and evening, high chance of great shots📷 ✅Food exploration: Lamb hot pot, old yogurt, sweet fermented barley… foodies don’t miss out · ✅ Accommodation Recommendations 1️⃣ Xining/Haizhu New District: Rich nightlife, design hotels with great photo opportunities (suitable for those with a good budget) 2️⃣ Delingha: Must-pass on popular routes, accommodations tight in peak season, book early 3️⃣ Dunhuang/Shazhou Night Market: The choice for artsy youth, hutong homestays to experience Northwest charm 4️⃣ Zhangye City: Convenient transport, close to Zhangye West Station and night market, many nearby attractions 5️⃣ Scenic area exits: Commercial atmosphere strong, good for browsing but shop carefully ·

Qinghai | You Must Visit Hoh Xil Once in Your Life Hoh Xil, means "green mountain ridge" or "beautiful girl" in Mongolian, and "desolate land under the northern Kunlun Mountains" in Tibetan. It is a forbidden zone for humans and a paradise for wild animals. · ————— I downloaded the movie "Kekexili: Mountain Patrol" directed by Lu Chuan to watch on the plane before I left. The movie says, "The story of Hoh Xil is hard to tell, only those who have really been there can understand." The movie is based on the true story of Sonam Dargye. This is heaven, hell, a pure land, and a place to witness life and faith. The last primitive wilderness in China, this is the last habitat of Tibetan antelopes. This is the wilderness, but not barren. Every alpine meadow interprets the power of life. · ————— The original plan was to spend two days there, but it was still early and the weather was good, so I went straight to the Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West after returning to the Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace. I was very lucky along the way, from continuous rain to bright sunshine, snow-capped mountains, jade pool, alpine meadows, I saw Tibetan wild donkeys, Tibetan gazelles, Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, and marmots. I didn't see the "egg yolk pie internet celebrity wolf" but took a photo with the "wolf friend" (see the picture later). The local driver was familiar with the road conditions and drove well, and we left the reserve safely before dark. · ————— Travel method: chartered car Departure: near Golmud Railway Station Departure time: 8:30 Return time: 20:30 Travel preparation: 1️⃣ I ate rhodiola and oxygen supplements for half a month, and didn't take a shower or wash my hair the day before. 2️⃣ I prepared 2 bottles of oxygen (I felt a headache and head swelling when the altitude was over 4,500 meters, and I used up both bottles). 3️⃣ ID card (ID card security check is required to enter and leave the reserve). 4️⃣ Keep warm and protect yourself from the sun, wear a hat and a jacket. Chartered car itinerary: Golmud ➡️ Kunlun Holy Spring (with a water toilet) ➡️ Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace (there are two destinations here, Route A is Sonam Dargye Protection Station, Route B is the Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West). Route A: Yuzhu Peak Viewing Platform (it snowed on the night of September 9, and the snow was particularly shocking) ➡️ Kunlun Pass (altitude: 4,768 meters, the breathtaking beauty, there are two wolf-like dogs and a Samoyed outside the platform, which are said to have grown up with humans and dogs, and you can pet them and take photos with them for a fee) ➡️ Yuxu Peak Viewing Platform ➡️ Hoh Xil Sonam Dargye Protection Station (the driver said the protection station was under repair and could not be visited, so I returned at Kunlun Pass) Route B: ➡️ Jade Pool Grassland (the most beautiful scenery is on the road) ➡️ Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West (not stunning, but it led me to the most beautiful no man's land)

Once the National Day holiday is over, flight and hotel prices are like a popped balloon. Traveling now is what true relaxation is all about. Pick a few slow-paced, low-cost places and spend the autumn just lounging around. 01 Nanning | Guangxi Nanning has finally cooled down in October. Short sleeves are perfect for the day, but you'll need a light jacket when the river breeze picks up at night. Qingxiu Mountain is the locals' backyard. ⏰ It's recommended to head up after 4:00 PM when the sun isn't as harsh, and you'll catch the sunset right as you reach Longxiang Pagoda. There are plenty of supply points on the mountain, but they're pricier than outside, so bringing your own water is more cost-effective. 📍 Enter through the North Gate of Qingxiu Mountain and exit through the West Gate; you can visit the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities along the way. It's free, but closed on Mondays, so ⚠️ don't get caught out. Fubo Temple is by the Yong River; it's small but peaceful. The river breeze blows right through, making it a comfortable place to sit for a while. 🚄 A taxi from Nanning East Station to Qingxiu Mountain costs about 20 yuan, and public transport is also convenient. For accommodation, choose areas near Nanhu Lake or Chaoyang Square; it's close to Laoyou noodles and suanye at night. If you want to save money, budget hotels in the off-season can be found for just over 100 yuan. Perfect for those who don't want to rush through attractions and just want to take it slow. 02 Xianning | Hubei The Ancient Battlefield of Chibi is Xianning's biggest draw. Coming here in October, the wind by the river is strong. ⏰ The morning light hits the cliff carvings at an angle, making it the clearest time for photos. The scenic area is large, so grab a map at the entrance to avoid backtracking. 📍 The Three Kingdoms Sculpture Garden and Yijiang Pavilion are two must-see spots. Standing in the pavilion looking out at the Yangtze River, you'll understand why they chose to camp here back then. ⚠️ Some historical reenactments in the scenic area cost extra. It's up to you whether to watch them, but don't get swindled by touts at the entrance. 🍜 Find a local farmhouse restaurant after leaving the scenic area; fish cake and lotus root soup are local specialties, and you can get full for 40–50 yuan per person. 🚄 It's about a 30-minute taxi ride from Chibi North Station. It's recommended to arrange accommodation separately from the city center, or just do a day trip, which isn't tiring. Suitable for those interested in history who don't want to hike. 03 Lhasa | Tibet In October, Lhasa is warm during the day, but the temperature difference between morning and night can reach over 10 degrees. ⏰ It's recommended to book morning tickets for the Potala Palace; the light is good, and you won't be as out of breath climbing the stairs. Tickets must be booked in advance through official channels. ⚠️ Spots are still tight at the end of the peak season, so don't wait until you're at the gate. 📍 Barkhor Street, surrounding Jokhang Temple, is crowded with pilgrims in the afternoon. Follow the crowd for a lap, and your pace will naturally slow down. Sit in a sweet tea house; a pot of sweet tea costs just a few yuan and can help you kill half an afternoon. Namtso is already very cold in October with strong winds. If you go, bring a down jacket and a hat. 🚄 Taxis are convenient in Lhasa city. For Namtso, it's recommended to charter a car or join a legitimate one-day tour; don't be tempted by cheap, unlicensed taxis. Choose accommodation near Barkhor Street; you'll be right in the old town. If you're prone to altitude sickness, rest for a day before planning your itinerary. 04 Hanzhong | Shaanxi In late October in Hanzhong, the ginkgo trees along the Han River start to turn yellow, and the air is moist, neither dry nor humid. The Shimen Plank Road is built along the cliffside and isn't tiring to walk. ⏰ Go in the morning when it's less crowded, and the light shining into the canyon looks great. ⚠️ Some sections of the plank road are narrow, so avoid peak holiday times and don't crowd in at noon. 📍 Guhantai is in the city center, free to enter, and closed on Mondays. The ancient trees in the courtyard are worth a pause. After visiting, take a walk along the Han River; the river gets foggy in the evening, which makes for great photos. 🍜 Hanzhong hot noodles and vegetable tofu are the standard breakfast, costing just a few yuan per serving. Shops with lines of locals are generally good. 🚄 It's a 10-plus minute taxi ride from Hanzhong Station to Guhantai. To get to Shimen Plank Road, you can take a bus or taxi, which takes about 40 minutes. Choose accommodation near the Central Square for convenience in dining, living, and travel. Suitable for those who like a slow pace and don't like hiking. 05 Zhangjiajie | Hunan In October, the leaves on the mountains in Zhangjiajie start to change color, and there are far fewer people than during the summer vacation. The Wulingyuan Scenic Area is large. ⏰ It's recommended to enter from the Biaozhimen Gate before 7:00 AM and take the eco-friendly bus to the Bailong Elevator to avoid the peak tour group hours. ⚠️ Tickets are valid for four days, but the cable car and elevator cost extra, so budget accordingly. Tianmen Mountain and Wulingyuan are two separate systems, so don't get them mixed up. You need to wear shoe covers for the Tianmen Mountain glass skywalk; if you're afraid of heights, just take the side path—no need to force it. 📍 Jinbian Creek in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is flat the whole way, suitable for seniors and children, and takes about two hours to walk. 🍜 Food on the mountain is expensive and mediocre, so it's recommended to bring your own snacks and eat Sanxiaguo after you get down the mountain. 🚄 It's about a 40-minute drive from Zhangjiajie West Station to Wulingyuan. Choose accommodation near the Wulingyuan Biaozhimen Gate for the easiest access to the mountain the next day. It's cool on the mountain in the mornings and evenings in October, so bring a windbreaker. 06 Pingdingshan | Henan The Yaoshan Mountain–Zhongyuan Buddha area is at its most comfortable in October. The red leaves on the mountain start to show color from mid-October. ⏰ Take the cable car up the mountain and walk along the plank road; the view opens up layer by layer. ⚠️ Cable car lines can be over an hour on weekends, so go on a weekday if you can. 📍 The Zhongyuan Buddha is at the foot of Yaoshan Mountain. The bronze statue is very tall; you can't get a full shot if you're too close, so step back to the central axis of the square for the best photo. There is shuttle transport between scenic spots, but it's infrequent, so check the last departure time. 🍜 Languocai and Hele noodles at the farmhouse restaurants at the foot of the mountain are local specialties, costing 30–40 yuan per person. 🚄 It's about an hour's taxi ride from Pingdingshan West Station to Yaoshan. Driving or chartering a car is recommended, as public transport transfers are a hassle. Suitable for those who want to hike without the crowds. 07 Yanbian | Jilin In October, the forests under Changbai Mountain in Yanbian are ablaze with color, and the Liudingshan Cultural Tourism Zone is just right. ⏰ Go to the Jinding Buddha in the morning when the morning mist hasn't cleared yet and the light is soft. ⚠️ The scenic area is large, so wear comfortable shoes—don't wear new shoes that will give you blisters. 📍 At the foot of Liudingshan, there is the Bohai Kingdom Ancient Tomb Complex; if you're interested in history, you can stay an extra hour. After visiting, head back to Dunhua city center to try cold noodles, rice sausages, and sticky rice cakes. 🍜 The cold noodles are sweet and sour, and they're refreshing even in cool weather. 🚄 It's a short taxi ride of about 20 yuan from Dunhua Station to Liudingshan. Choose accommodation in Dunhua city center for better value than around the scenic area. You'll need a light down jacket in the mornings and evenings in October; the wind is bone-chilling, so don't skimp on warmth. Suitable for those who want to see different autumn colors without the crowds. 08 Haixi | Qinghai In October, Chaka Salt Lake and Emerald Lake in Haixi enter the off-season, with fewer people and clean, blue skies. ⏰ It's recommended to go to Chaka in the morning when the lake surface is calm and the reflections are clear; it gets windy in the afternoon, which diminishes the mirror effect. ⚠️ The salt lake has strong reflections, so bring sunglasses and sunscreen—don't try to tough it out without them. Qarhan Salt Lake is much larger than Chaka, and the salt flower landscape is more primitive, but it's remote, so chartering a car is recommended. 📍 Emerald Lake has layered colors, which look best when the light is angled in the afternoon. It's windy at Kunlun Mountain Pass, and it's bone-chillingly cold in October, so a thick jacket and hat are essential. 🚄 Attractions in this area are scattered, so driving or chartering a car is the norm; public transport is infrequent. Choose accommodation in Golmud or Delingha as a stopover. The altitude is high, so don't overschedule your first day; take it slow to acclimate. Suitable for those who can handle long car rides and want to see vast, open landscapes. These eight places are less crowded, cheaper, and slower-paced from October to November. Pick one near you and really make the most of your vacation by just chilling out.

Obtain a border permit in advance (required for some pastoral areas). 🧰 Practical accessories: Bring a thermos, sun mask, altitude sickness medication, and sunglasses. The highland UV rays are strong. 🍚 Supplies: Bring high-calorie snacks and portable oxygen canisters. Dining options in scenic areas are limited, and it's easy to get hungry and tired. 📱 Electronics: Bring a fast-charging power bank and spare camera batteries. Don't want to deal with National Day crowds? 8 budget-friendly small cities tested for savings 01 Luoyang | Henan Luoyang during the National Day holiday is more crowded than the niches at the Longmen Grottoes. But if you are willing to get up early, rush to the 📍 Longmen Grottoes Northwest Service Area before 7:00 AM, and you can see the Vairocana Buddha before the tour buses arrive. Tickets are 90 CNY, with half-price for students. ⚠️ Remember to book in advance via the mini-program; tickets for the day are not sold on-site. If you don't want to squeeze into the grottoes, go to Wangcheng Park in the afternoon. October is just in time for the chrysanthemum exhibition, and seeing the local seniors walking around with their birdcages is much more relaxing than inside the scenic area. The park is free and accessible directly via Metro Line 1. 🍜 Don't eat dinner near the scenic area. Take a taxi to the Old Town Cross Street. A bowl of beef soup is 8 CNY, paired with shredded pancakes, which is a more satisfying meal than at the viral shops. For accommodation, choose the Xigong District; it's on the way to both Longmen and Guanlin, and you can find clean chain hotels for just over 100 CNY. ⏰ Laojun Mountain and Jiguan Cave require a full day. During the National Day holiday, the cable car queue starts at 2 hours. If you aren't physically fit, just skip the summit and take photos at the foot of the mountain. 02 Baiyin | Gansu An hour north of Lanzhou, the Yellow River Stone Forest in Baiyin was my most unexpected discovery this year. During the National Day holiday, the ticket plus sightseeing bus is less than 100 CNY, and it's much less crowded than Zhangye Danxia. 📍 Longwan Village is the main base. Stay in a local farmhouse in the village for about 100 CNY a night, and you can see the stone forest right from your window. ⏰ Take a sheepskin raft down the Yellow River before 8:00 AM. The light hits the stone pillars at an angle, so you won't need filters for your photos. 🚄 Take a bus from Lanzhou to Jingtai and then transfer. The whole trip takes about 3 hours. Driving yourself is even better; the scenic area parking lot is 10 CNY per day. ⚠️ It's windy in the stone forest. In October, you'll need a light down jacket, so don't just bring a hoodie. A good way to play with seniors is to take the sightseeing bus to the viewing platform and walk the plank road to see the panoramic view. Young people can try hiking in the valley, which takes 4 hours round trip; make sure your shoes are non-slip. 03 Wuhan | Hubei In Wuhan during the National Day holiday, the queue for the Yellow Crane Tower can wrap around the park twice. My advice is not to climb the tower; go to 📍 Desheng Bridge to take a long-distance shot. The red walls against the tower's silhouette are free and look great in photos. The East Lake Greenway is the right way to experience Wuhan. Rent a shared bike and ride from Liyuan to Moshan. The lake breeze along the way is much more comfortable than squeezing onto the subway. ⏰ Go after 5:00 PM. The sunset over the lake looks good in every shot. Songyang Temple in Huangpi is quiet and less crowded, perfect for those wanting to escape the crowds. The Mulan Cultural Ecological Tourism Zone has events during the National Day holiday, but the attractions are scattered. ⚠️ Don't buy an all-inclusive ticket; just pick 1 or 2 spots to visit. 🍜 For breakfast, go to Liangdao Street. Hot dry noodles are 5 CNY and doupi is 7 CNY, which is half the price of Hubu Alley. Stay near Chuhe Hanjie; Metro Line 4 makes it convenient to go anywhere, and hostel beds are around 60 CNY. 04 Dalian | Liaoning In October, the sea breeze in Dalian is already chilly, but it's just right to avoid the summer crowds. Tickets for the Golden Pebble Beach National Tourist Resort do not increase during the National Day holiday, and the beach is free. ⏰ Arrive before 10:00 AM for good light and to avoid the cold. Laohutan Ocean Park is suitable for bringing kids, but ⚠️ the performance times are fixed. Check the schedule as soon as you enter; don't wander around and miss them. Tangli Lake Park is where locals go for a stroll. It's free, and the reed marshes in autumn are great for photos. Go to Xinghai Square in the evening to feed the seagulls and watch the lights on the cross-sea bridge. It doesn't cost a penny. 🍜 For meals, go to Heishijiao. Buy seafood at the market and have a nearby shop cook it for you. It costs about 60 CNY per person to eat until you're full. For accommodation, choose the Xi'an Road commercial area. Metro Line 1 goes directly to the beach, and budget hotels are around 150 CNY. The temperature difference between day and night in Dalian in October is large, so bring a windbreaker. 05 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu Zhenjiang is a severely underrated gem for budget travel. The combined ticket for Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigu Mountain is less than 100 CNY. ⏰ Climb Beigu Mountain first in the morning; it's less crowded and offers a view of the Yangtze River. Jinshan Temple is popular, but after 10:00 AM on the National Day holiday, it's full of tour groups, so I recommend entering before 8:00 AM. Jurong Maoshan is suitable for self-driving, and the ticket plus cable car is just over 100 CNY. The Taoist temple at the top of the mountain is quiet, and the mountain scenery in October is just right. ⚠️ Prices on the mountain are high, so bring your own water. 🍜 You must try Zhenjiang pot lid noodles. At those old shops on Daxi Road, a bowl is over 10 CNY, and the yaorou (cured pork) dipped in vinegar is the soul of the dish. Stay near Dashikou; you can walk to the Three Mountains and Xijindu. Hostels are 50 CNY a night. Go to Xijindu in the evening; the lanterns lighting up give it a nice vibe, and it's free to walk around. Overall, a 2-day, 1-night trip can be done for 300 CNY per person. 06 Haixi | Qinghai Going to Haixi during the National Day holiday is a masterstroke of reverse travel. Chaka Salt Lake is crowded during the holiday, but Emerald Lake and Qarhan Salt Lake remain empty. ⚠️ The ticket plus small train for Chaka is over 100 CNY. If you want to save money, just buy the entrance ticket and walk in; it takes half an hour to reach the lake. 📍 Qarhan Salt Lake is north of Golmud. The Ten Thousand Zhang Salt Bridge is free, and the salt flowers look like coral. The Kunlun Mountain Pass is windy. ⏰ Arrive before noon, as the weather changes quickly in the afternoon. The sunset at Emerald Lake is the most beautiful, with layered colors in the lake water, and there is no entrance fee. 🚄 I recommend driving or chartering a car, as public transport is infrequent. Stay in Golmud city; you can get a standard room for over 100 CNY, which is half the price of staying near the scenic area. In October, Haixi is already around 0 degrees. A down jacket, sunglasses, and moisturizer are essential. This is suitable for people who can endure hardship and want to see grand scenery. Be cautious about bringing seniors and children; altitude and temperature differences are hard barriers. 07 Sanya | Hainan Flights and hotels in Sanya are indeed expensive during the National Day holiday, but if you play it right, you can save half. Just pick one between Daxiao Dongtian and Tianya Haijiao. ⚠️ Tianya Haijiao is just 2 rocks, and the ticket is 80 CNY, so I don't recommend it. Wuzhizhou Island requires an hour of queuing to get on the island during the National Day holiday. ⏰ Catch the first boat at 8:00 AM to get on the island and finish the water activities before noon. Yalong Bay is free, and the beach quality is even better than the paid scenic areas, making it perfect for spending an afternoon. 🍜 Don't eat at the scenic area. Go to the First Market to buy seafood and have it cooked; it costs about 80 CNY per person. Stay in Dadonghai or Sanya Bay; homestays are around 200 CNY, which is much cheaper than Yalong Bay. Sanya is still in summer in October, so bring enough sunscreen and mosquito repellent. If you want to save money, take the bus; the tourist lines cover the main attractions. 08 Tianjin In Tianjin during the National Day holiday, the Italian Style Town is crowded, but riding a shared bike through the Five Great Avenues is more interesting than taking a horse-drawn carriage. ⚠️ The carriage ride is 80 CNY for a loop, which isn't worth it. The Olympic Center Stadium looks good when lit up at night, and it's free. Fantawild Adventure is suitable for kids, but the queues are long during the National Day holiday. ⏰ Rush to the popular rides as soon as the park opens. The Five Great Avenues Cultural Tourism Zone is free, and the sycamore leaves turn yellow in autumn, making it perfect for photos. 🍜 For breakfast, go to the Northwest Corner. Jianbing Guozi is 6 CNY and Guobacai is 8 CNY, which is more authentic than Nanshi Food Street. Stay near Yingkou Road; the subway is convenient, and budget hotels are just over 100 CNY. Tianjin is suitable for a 2-day, 1-night trip, and you can have a comfortable time for 250 CNY per person. It's cool in the morning and evening in October, so bring a light jacket. Overall, among these 8 small cities, I most recommend Haixi and Baiyin; they are less crowded, the scenery is real, and you won't spend much money. When going out for the National Day holiday, don't follow the crowd to popular spots. Pick a small city and stroll slowly; the money you save is enough for several good meals. Which one have you been to? Let's chat in the comments section.

Qiemo, located at the northern foot of the Kunlun Mountains, is known as the "Hometown of the Jade King." Legend has it that during the Queen Mother of the West's birthday banquet, a maidservant spilled a jade wine cup, and the fragments fell to Qiemo, transforming into jade stones, while the wine flowed to form the Tatleksu River. In the lobby of the Yudu Hotel, there is a 1,502-kilogram piece of bluish-white jade, certified by the Shanghai Great World Guinness Records. The Qiemo Jade Trading Center is worth visiting; the sugar-white jade is delicate and feels like solidified cream, but if you're not an expert, it's best to look more and buy less. The road from Qiemo County towards the Kunlun Mountains is open wilderness with no established mining tourism projects; you'll need a local acquaintance to guide you if you want to visit the mines. Just stroll through the market in the county town and listen to jade mining stories; don't impulsively go into the mountains.

Kunlun Pass is located on the G109 National Highway at an altitude of 4,767 meters, serving as the vital gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The drive from Golmud takes about three hours; the road conditions are excellent, but the rapid climb in elevation is significant. At the pass, you'll find the Sonam Dargye Monument surrounded by prayer flags that snap in the wind rushing through the mountain gap. Taking photos is a must, but don't linger—the wind is bone-chillingly cold, and a headache here is often the first sign of altitude sickness. Be sure to wear a technical shell with a fleece liner, and don't forget your hat and gloves. Since there is no shade or shops at the summit, it's best to head back down once you've finished shooting. On the return trip, you'll pass through Budongquan (the Unfrozen Spring), where vibrant icy blue water bubbles up from the snow, never freezing despite the cold. Kunlun Pass isn't just a destination; it's a boundary marker for the vast no-man's land ahead. Standing here, the wind truly shows you what it means to be at the edge.

Hoh Xil isn't a commercial scenic area; there are no entrance fees, only a deep sense of reverence. From Golmud, head south along the G109 for about 200 kilometers to reach the Sonam Dargye Protection Station. The entire route is paved, though the elevation climbs from 2,800 to 4,600 meters. Your best chance to spot Tibetan antelopes is near the protection station between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Please stay quiet and remain in your vehicle; a telephoto lens is essential, as smartphone cameras won't be enough. At the 4,700-meter-high Kunlun Pass, prayer flags flutter amidst the snow-capped peaks, and the wind is strong enough to knock you off your feet—a hardshell windbreaker is mandatory. Start taking Rhodiola two days before your trip, keep oxygen cylinders on hand, and avoid running, jumping, or showering. There are no convenience stores along the way, so bring your own self-heating meals and hot water. Do not litter; a single plastic bag can be fatal if accidentally eaten by the antelopes. This isn't a place for leisure; it's a place for awe.

Between the National Day holiday and the start of winter, flight and hotel prices finally ease up. These 8 destinations offer friendly off-season prices and perfect autumn scenery, making them great places to get the most out of your budget. 01 Nanyang | Henan The autumn colors at Laojieling in Funiu Mountain, Xixia, peak in mid-to-late October, with red leaves spreading from the ridges to the valleys. The Dinosaur Relics Park is great for families, but don't expect to finish both spots in one day; the drive between them is quite long. ⏰ Suggestion: Head to Laojieling in the morning, then visit the Relics Park in the afternoon when the light is angled better. 📍 Accommodations in Taiping Town, north of Xixia County, are affordable, with standard rooms available for just over CNY 100. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains can exceed 10 degrees, so a light down jacket is more practical than a windbreaker. Attraction tickets and sightseeing bus tickets are calculated separately; check the official channels in advance to understand the package rules. 02 Gannan | Gansu Zhagana's stone city is already frosted in October, with low-hanging mist in the early morning. Langmusi Town is a good place to stay for a night; there are monasteries on both the Gansu and Sichuan sides, so don't mix them up. Gahai Lake is windy in late October, and the water color is on the colder side, so walking a section of the boardwalk is enough. The autumn leaves in Yeliguan are about a week later than in Zhagana, so you can plan your itinerary accordingly. 🍜 Tibetan buns and yogurt in Langmusi Town are local staples and are priced more reasonably than at the entrance to the scenic area. 🚄 There are buses from Lanzhou to Hezuo. Carpooling within Gannan is more cost-effective than chartering a car, costing around CNY 100 per person per day. ⚠️ After October, some high-altitude roads may be temporarily restricted due to snow, so check road conditions before setting off. Choose accommodations with heating; it gets truly cold at night. 03 Yueyang | Hunan Yueyang Tower is less crowded in the morning, and the autumn water level of Dongting Lake is just right—neither too high nor too low. The reeds on Junshan Island start to turn yellow at the end of October, and it takes at least two hours to walk around the island. 📍 Bianhe Street is near the south gate of Yueyang Tower. It has many snacks, but prices are geared toward tourists. Local restaurants two streets to the south offer better flavors and prices. ⚠️ There is a ferry between Yueyang Tower and Junshan Island, with schedules that change seasonally, so don't leave your return trip too late in the afternoon. Birdwatching at Dongting Lake requires colder weather; in October, it's mostly about the water and the sky. 04 Baoji | Shaanxi The autumn colors of Taibai Mountain start to layer in mid-October: green at the foot of the mountain, yellow at the waist, and snow at the summit. The cable car plus hiking combination is suitable for those with average stamina; don't attempt the whole climb if you aren't prepared. Guanshan Grassland's grass turns yellow in October. It's windy, which makes for great photos but feels cold. Famen Temple is great for those interested in Buddhist culture; otherwise, a quick visit might feel empty. 🍜 Hand-rolled noodles and sazi noodles in downtown Baoji are local daily staples and are half the price of those around the scenic area. ⚠️ "Frozen Mountain Wind" (Dongshanfeng) is a wilder spot; don't go alone if you lack outdoor experience. 🚄 The high-speed train from Xi'an to Baoji takes half an hour, and there is a tourist line from the city to Taibai Mountain. Buy attraction tickets and cable car tickets separately, and keep an eye on official daily opening announcements. 05 Dongying | Shandong The highlights of the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve are concentrated from late October to November, when the seepweed turns red and migratory birds arrive one after another. The scenic area is huge, so don't try to walk it—don't skimp on the sightseeing bus ticket. 📍 Yuanwang Tower is the standard spot to view the confluence of the river and the sea, but the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⏰ The afternoon light is better for photographing the wetlands; the morning backlight makes everything look gray. ⚠️ Dining options inside the scenic area are limited, so bring your own food and water. The ticket plus bus fare is a fixed expense, but it's worth the money compared to the hassle of getting around. 06 Haixi | Qinghai Kunlun Mountain, Qarhan Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake enter the off-season after October, and prices drop. The "sky mirror" at Chaka Salt Lake depends on calm, sunny days; October is windier than summer, which affects the mirror effect. The colors of Emerald Lake are most transparent around 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM, and the salt flowers of Qarhan Salt Lake are best viewed up close. The altitude at Kunlun Pass is high, so don't stay too long. 🚄 Golmud is the base for this route, and carpooling for the salt lake route costs around CNY 200 per person. ⚠️ After October, most accommodations around Qinghai Lake close, but those in the Haixi direction remain open. Prepare for zero-degree weather to stay warm, and don't stop using sunscreen—the autumn sun on the plateau is unforgiving. 07 Baoting | Hainan Binglanggu and Yanoda enter a relatively comfortable period in October–November, with less rain than in summer and temperatures that aren't at their most stifling. The rainforest hiking routes in Yanoda are divided into difficult and easy; choose the short route if you are with elderly travelers. The Li and Miao cultural displays at Binglanggu are more performance-oriented, so just go with the mindset of enjoying the show. 🍜 Farmhouse restaurants outside the scenic area are more affordable than those inside; coconut chicken and wild vegetables are local specialties. 📍 There are buses from Baoting County to both scenic areas. It might be hard to hail a taxi for the return trip, so keep a driver's number handy. ⚠️ Mosquitoes and insects are present in the rainforest all year round, so don't skip long pants and mosquito repellent. 08 Baise | Guangxi The water level of Haokun Lake is stable in autumn. The road around the lake is suitable for self-driving or cycling, and accommodations in the lakeside villages are in the 100-yuan range. The waterfall at Tongling Grand Canyon still has decent water volume in October, but it will be weaker later on. Chengbi Lake is close to downtown Baise and is suitable for a half-day trip; the light is good in the evening. 🍜 Rolled rice noodles and "suanye" (pickled fruit/vegetables) in downtown Baise are local daily staples and are priced more reasonably than at the scenic area. ⚠️ Tongling Grand Canyon has many steps that are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. Public transportation around Haokun Lake is average, so carpooling with a few people is more cost-effective. These 8 places are not expensive to visit in October–November. Gannan and Qinghai are weather-dependent, so keep a close eye on the weather and road conditions before you set off. Yueyang and Baise are perfect for a spontaneous trip and have the lowest costs. Which one would you like to visit first?

Don't get stuck in the crowds this National Day! These 6 places are uncrowded, beautiful, and affordable 1️⃣ Zhongwei | Ningxia Heading northwest for National Day, Zhongwei is the kind of place that is "quiet but impressive." Shapotou is famous, but what really surprised me was the Gaomiao Temple. ⏰ Gaomiao Temple is best visited in the morning; it's uncrowded, and the light shines in from the side hall, making the patterns on the brick carvings clearly visible. It's tucked away in the city, with three stories of pavilions stacked up, like a compressed antique architectural model. Save Shapotou for after 4:00 PM. 📍 Enter from the North Gate, take the shuttle bus to the Yellow River area, then transfer to the desert area. Don't line up for camel rides as soon as you enter; walk further in, and the back of the sand dunes is almost empty. 🍜 In the evening, back in the city, try the Haozi noodles on Gulou East Street. Sour soup with lamb mince—one bowl and you'll forget all about the sand and wind. ⚠️ Shapotou is windy, so choose a hat with a strap, or you'll be chasing it for half a mile. Stay near the Drum Tower; a taxi to either spot is under 20 yuan. Perfect for you if you don't want to join the crowds and can handle a bit of dryness. 2️⃣ Jilin October in Jilin City is the transition period between Songhua Lake and Rime Island. The rime hasn't started yet, but Songhua Lake has already put on its autumn attire. ⏰ Arrive at Songhua Lake Scenic Area before 8:00 AM. There's mist on the lake, like someone poured milk into the water. Take a boat to Wuhu Island. Boat tickets and admission tickets are calculated separately; check official channels in advance and refer to the daily announcement. You won't actually see rime on Rime Island at this time, so don't be fooled by the name. But Hantun Village on the island is very quiet, with corn racks set up in the courtyards, perfect for walking and daydreaming. 🍜 Have a pot of stewed fish by the lake at noon. The fish is caught fresh, and the corn cakes are dipped in the soup. ⚠️ Don't sit at the first restaurant at the scenic area entrance; walk 200 meters further in, and the prices are half as much. Stay in Jilin city center. There are shuttle buses to Songhua Lake, and chartering a car to Rime Island is more convenient. Perfect for those who like lakes and mountains and aren't in a rush. 3️⃣ Qiqihar | Heilongjiang Zhalong in Qiqihar is the most "unpretentious" nature reserve I've ever seen. The red-crowned cranes pace right in front of you, as if patrolling their own territory. ⏰ There are release times every morning and afternoon; check the daily announcement for details. Arrive at the crane viewing platform half an hour early to grab a spot. When the flock of cranes sweeps overhead, the wind is literally fanned by their wings. 📍 You can take bus 306 from the city, but it doesn't run often, so self-driving or carpooling is recommended. Admission and the shuttle bus are separate costs. There's a lot of walking inside, so wear comfortable shoes. ⚠️ Don't feed them, don't chase the cranes, and don't use flash. They are wild, not performers. 🍜 Back in the city, have some Qiqihar barbecue—mixed meat with onions, sizzling on the grill. Stay in Longsha District, and you can stroll through Longsha Park in the evening. Perfect for those traveling with kids, parents, or anyone who just wants to be awed by big birds. 4️⃣ Nantong | Jiangsu Nantong Haohe is the "anti-rat race" choice I found in Jiangsu. While Suzhou and Yangzhou are packed for National Day, you can still take a leisurely stroll here at Haohe. ⏰ Go to Haohe after 5:00 PM, when the light softens and the plane trees by the river blend with their reflections. 📍 Enter from the Huanxi Cultural Square side, walk along the waterfront path toward the Nantong Museum, and pass several bridges along the way. The view from each bridge is different. Haohe is free, but the cruise boat costs money. I recommend walking; if you get tired, find a teahouse by the river and sit for a while. 🍜 Nantong clam pancakes and jump noodles make a good dinner. The clams are straightforwardly fresh, and the noodles are chewy. ⚠️ Walking the whole loop of Haohe takes over two hours, so don't wear new shoes. Perfect for those who don't want to be in crowds and want a sense of city walking. 5️⃣ Hangzhou | Zhejiang Hangzhou is definitely not "uncrowded" during National Day, but I have a way for you to avoid 90% of the tourists. The core is simple: don't go to the Broken Bridge, and don't go to Hefang Street. ⏰ Arrive at Maojiabu in the West Lake Scenic Area at 6:30 AM. Local seniors are practicing Tai Chi, and the lake is as quiet as a private one. Walk from Maojiabu to Guo's Villa, then take a bus to Xixi National Wetland Park. Xixi is bigger and wilder than West Lake. 📍 Enter from the Zhoujiacun entrance and take a sculling boat along the Shentankou route. Reeds and persimmon trees glide past the boat. The China Umbrella Museum is west of Gongchen Bridge. It's free, uncrowded, and you can clearly see the umbrella frames and paper surfaces. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Taiziwan Park doesn't have tulips at this time, but the lawns and streams are still there, perfect for laying out a picnic mat. 🍜 Go to Damalong at noon; the scallion pancakes and fried dough sticks are made fresh. Stay at Longxiangqiao or Gudan; the subway is convenient. Perfect for you if you're willing to get up early and want to see a different side of Hangzhou. 6️⃣ Jiuquan | Gansu Jiuquan is the kind of place that "once is not enough." Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring, Mogao Caves, Yadan, and Yumenguan are scattered along the east-west line; don't try to do it all in one day. ⏰ Enter Mingsha Mountain after 5:00 PM; the sand won't burn your feet. Climb to the sand ridge to watch the lights come on at Crescent Moon Spring. 📍 Be sure to book the Mogao Caves in advance. The caves you see with a regular ticket and an emergency ticket are different; refer to the official daily announcement. Yadan National Geopark is on the west line of Dunhuang, where the wind has blown the mounds into the shape of a fleet. Yumenguan is just a dirt mound now, but standing there, the wind is strong enough to blow you back to the Han and Tang dynasties. 🍜 At the Shazhou Night Market in Dunhuang city, donkey meat yellow noodles and apricot skin tea are standard. ⚠️ The west line takes seven or eight hours to run in a day, so bring enough water and dry food. Stay in Dunhuang city; it's close to both the Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain. Perfect for those interested in history and landforms. 7️⃣ Haixi | Qinghai Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture has a long name, but the scenery is even wilder. Kunlun Mountain, Chaerhan Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake form a salt lake corridor. ⏰ Go to Chaerhan Salt Lake in the morning; the salt flowers look like crushed diamonds in the light. Arrive at Emerald Lake in the evening; the water is an unreal green, like someone spilled a palette of paint. Chaka Salt Lake is the most famous, but also the most crowded. ⚠️ Don't go at noon if you want to take reflection photos; the light is too harsh. The water surface is only calm after 4:00 PM. It's windy at Kunlun Pass, so wear something warm when you get out to take photos. 🍜 There are few places to eat on the road, so prepare some naan and yogurt. 📍 It is recommended to start from Golmud and charter a car for this route; public transportation is basically not an option. Stay in Golmud or Chaka Town, depending on which lake you want to see first. Perfect for you if you can handle long car rides but want to see something you'll remember for a lifetime. 8️⃣ Nanyang | Henan Nanyang's Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling Dinosaur Relics Park Tourist Area has a name so long you can't say it in one breath. But going in October, you'll catch the Funiu Mountains changing colors. ⏰ Hike Laojieling in the morning; take the cable car and walk, and you can see the mountains covered in colorful foliage from the top. The Dinosaur Relics Park is best for the afternoon; the indoor exhibition halls are shaded, and the dinosaur egg fossils are densely embedded in the rock layers. 📍 The two spots are not far apart, but the mountain roads are winding, so watch your speed if driving. ⚠️ The temperature at the top of the mountain is much lower than at the bottom, so bring a jacket. 🍜 Have a bowl of Qiangguo noodles in Xixia County, paired with local kiwifruit. Stay in Xixia or at the foot of Laojieling for convenience to continue exploring the next day. Perfect for families with kids who want to see dinosaurs and enjoy the autumn scenery. If you don't want to crowd into popular mountains for National Day, this is a solid alternative. Pick one of these eight places closest to you and save it. When traveling for National Day, booking hotels and tickets early is more useful than any guide.

The two biggest fears when traveling with kids are crowds and high costs. October brings crisp autumn air. Instead of queuing at popular tourist spots, why not turn your attention to these 8 lesser-known cities? The scenery is great, the prices are reasonable, and the kids will have a blast. 1️⃣ Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai The plateau has already entered autumn in October. Daytime sun is strong, and the temperature difference between morning and evening can reach over 10 degrees. It is best to pack a fleece jacket and a windbreaker for your child. ⏰ The light is softest from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, perfect for viewing the salt lakes. 📍 The salt flowers and the Ten Thousand Zhang Salt Bridge at Qarhan Salt Lake are a natural geography lesson where kids can see firsthand where salt comes from. Emerald Lake has layered colors and actually looks better in photos on cloudy days, but it is windy, so bring a hat with a chin strap. Chaka Salt Lake is less crowded in October, and the wait for the small train is short. We recommend bringing your own waterproof shoe covers. ⚠️ Kunlun Pass is at a high altitude; we do not recommend staying long with kids. Just take a look at the snow-capped mountains as you pass by. Admission tickets and open areas are subject to official daily announcements. 2️⃣ Zaozhuang | Shandong Taierzhuang Ancient Town is the star here, but do not just treat it as a place for photos. In October, autumn colors climb the blue bricks, and the reflections in the water alleys are most beautiful after the lights come on in the evening. ⏰ We recommend entering the park after 3:00 PM and staying until 8:00 PM. 📍 Enter from the East Gate, walk along the main street to Fuxing Square, and then turn into Yuehe Street. Along the way, you can watch the Grand Canal drum performances and shadow puppetry. Kids are usually much more interested in hands-on experiences than looking at architecture. 🍜 For dinner, try the canal stone-baked flatbread and vegetable pancakes; the portions are generous. ⚠️ Accommodation inside the ancient town is pricey. Staying in the Taierzhuang district outside the town is a 10-minute taxi ride away and offers better value. This is suitable for school-age children; you can tell them stories about the canal as you walk. 3️⃣ Heyuan | Guangdong The breeze at Wanlv Lake is the most comfortable gift in October. The water is vast, and taking a boat to the islands is more worthwhile than just staring at the shore. ⏰ Depart in the morning to avoid the afternoon backlight. 📍 Jinghuayuan and Longfeng Island are great for family hikes; the paths are flat and stroller-friendly. Lake seafood is a highlight. 🍜 Steamed osmanthus fish and lake shrimp are the safest bets. Do not eat at the first restaurant near the entrance; walk a bit further into town for better prices. ⚠️ Guangdong still has lingering summer heat in October, and it is sunny at noon, so bring sunscreen and a change of clothes for your child. This is suitable for families looking for a short, relaxing trip who do not want to hike. 4️⃣ Longnan | Gansu Wenxian Tianchi and Guan'egou are the two highlights of autumn in Longnan. In October, the leaves start to change color, and the lake water is so blue it does not look like it belongs in the Northwest. ⏰ We recommend entering Guan'egou early in the morning, as the mountains block the light in the afternoon. 📍 There are many boardwalks in Guan'egou where kids can see waterfalls and colorful forests up close, but some sections are slippery, so non-slip shoes are a must. Wenxian Tianchi is at a slightly higher altitude, so slow down your pace and do not rush the kids. 🍜 You can try the Longnan jiaotuan and potato mochi for a taste of local flavor. The taste is on the sour and spicy side, so ask for less spice when ordering. ⚠️ The drive between the two places is not short; we recommend splitting it over two days rather than cramming it into one. This is suitable for families with decent stamina who enjoy natural scenery. 5️⃣ Guiyang | Guizhou The area around Guiyang is perfect for a "one direction per day" family trip. Tianhetan has caves and waterfalls, and kids will be excited to take a boat into the caves. Qingyan Ancient Town is best visited in the afternoon; ⏰ after 4:00 PM, the tour groups leave, making the stone paths much better to explore. 📍 Gaopo Yunding Grassland is windy and the grass turns yellow in October. It has wide-open views and is great for flying kites, but make sure to keep warm. Huaxi Park is flat, making it suitable for strollers and elderly travelers. 🍜 Braised pig trotters and rose candy are staples in Qingyan, but do not buy them at the most prominent shop on the main street. ⚠️ Guiyang is often rainy in October, so carry an umbrella. Choose accommodation near Huaguoyuan or Penshuichi for convenient travel. 6️⃣ Ningbo | Zhejiang Tianyi Pavilion and Moon Lake are great choices for a cultural family outing. The gardens are not too big, so kids will not get exhausted from walking. ⏰ It is less crowded in the morning, and the light filtering through the old trees is just right. 📍 There is a free walking path along Moon Lake where you can tell stories about the library along the way—it is more interesting than rote memorization of history. Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area offers more of a rural experience, perfect for letting kids run around. Qiantong Ancient Town is quieter; it has rapeseed flowers in March, while October is for harvest displays and blue-brick alleys. 🍜 The "three treasures of Qiantong"—old tofu, hollow tofu, and dried tofu—are authentically made in the small local eateries. ⚠️ Some old houses in Qiantong require separate tickets; choose according to your needs. This is suitable for families who want a mix of culture and nature. 7️⃣ Hefei | Anhui Sanhe Ancient Town is about an hour from downtown Hefei, and the cool air of the water town is just right in October. ⏰ We recommend arriving in the morning; take a boat ride first and then explore the streets. Doing it in reverse is tiring. 📍 Ancient South Street and Yiren Lane are the core areas; kids are very interested in the narrow alleys and stone bridges. 🍜 Sanhe rice dumplings and crispy duck are local specialties; street stalls are more authentic than large restaurants. ⚠️ The ancient town is free to enter, but buy tickets for small attractions as needed. Do not be misled by touts at the entrance. Suitable for families on a budget who want a half-day trip and can return to the city in the afternoon. 8️⃣ Chengdu | Sichuan October is the golden period for family travel in Chengdu. Tiantai Mountain is great for seeing autumn leaves and fireflies (seasonal, subject to park announcements), while Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan are suitable for hiking with older children. ⏰ Go to Dujiangyan in the morning to avoid afternoon tour groups. 📍 Anren Ancient Town has Republic of China-era architecture and mansion complexes. The pace is slow, making it perfect for photos and eating blood curd. Be sure to go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding early; ⏰ enter as soon as it opens at 7:30 AM, as pandas are active in the morning. 🍜 Dining options near the base are average; it is safer to eat back in the city. ⚠️ The Panda Base requires advance booking, and tickets are tight during holidays. Choose accommodation near Chunxi Road or Kuanzhai Alley for convenient subway access. Suitable for all ages, but there is a lot of walking involved, so choose a stroller or baby carrier based on your child's stamina. Traveling with kids in October does not have to mean going far. Choose a small city, slow down, and you will find it more memorable. Of these 8, Haixi and Longnan have the most intense autumn colors, while Guiyang and Chengdu are the most stress-free. Just choose based on your child's stamina.

Worried about tiring your kids on Golden Week outings? These 6️⃣ places will keep them playing until they don't want to leave 01 Beijing Bringing kids to Beijing during Golden Week? Don't try to cram three attractions into one day — their legs will give out. My advice is one big park per day, and use the rest of the time to wander hutongs and eat candied hawthorn. ⏰ Enter the Forbidden City at 8:30 AM when it opens and head straight to the treasure gallery and the clock gallery — kids are more interested in moving clocks than empty rooms. In the afternoon, go boating at Beihai Park. Enter through the south gate and go right to cut queues in half. Pick either the Summer Palace or the Temple of Heaven — a boat ride on Kunming Lake at the Summer Palace saves energy, while kids can play at the Temple of Heaven's echo wall for about half an hour. ⚠️ All parks require reservations seven days in advance. It's basically impossible to book on the day. Ticket prices and opening rules are subject to the official daily announcement. Stay along subway line 2 for easy access to any park. Suitable for kids aged 5 and up who can walk on their own — strollers will be jostled on the Forbidden City's stone paths. 02 Zhanjiang|Guangdong Zhanjiang is an underrated city for traveling with kids. A walk around the volcanic lake at Huguangyan is full of small discoveries — even picking up leaves can be fun for children. ⏰ The most comfortable time to visit Huguangyan is 7:00 AM — it's cool and less crowded, and the loop takes about 2 hours. The lake air is full of negative ions, and you'll feel refreshed after the walk. 📍 Rent an electric cart at the entrance to save half the effort when traveling with elders and young children. 🍜 Afterward, head to Chikan Old Street for beef offal and boji-style steamed snacks. If it's too sunny in the afternoon, go back to the hotel for a nap. ⚠️ Some lakeside sections lack shade, so don't push on after 11:00 AM. Bring sun hats and insect repellent. Suitable for kids aged 3 and up; the lakeside path is stroller-friendly. Zhanjiang isn't a popular Golden Week destination, so hotels are far friendlier priced than Sanya. 03 Lianyungang|Jiangsu Mount Huaguo naturally attracts kids — who wouldn't want to visit Sun Wukong's hometown? To be honest, the monkeys on the mountain are often more entertaining than the attractions. ⏰ Go to Mount Huaguo in the morning, take the shuttle bus to the Water Curtain Cave, then walk down slowly. 📍 Monkeys near the Water Curtain Cave will grab plastic bags, so hide snacks in your backpack. ⚠️ Don't wear red — monkeys react strongly to bright colors. In the afternoon, go to Liandao; the sand at Dashawan is fine and kids can dig all afternoon. 🍜 For dinner, eat swimming crab and mantis shrimp at Xugou Seafood City, and remember to ask the price before ordering. Stay one night on Liandao and go shell collecting at low tide the next morning. Mount Huaguo has many steps — for kids under 5, take the shuttle bus up and down so you don't have to carry them halfway. 04 Sanming|Fujian I hesitated to include this route because Dajin Lake and Taining Ancient Town have very different vibes — one wild, one tranquil — but together they work perfectly. ⏰ The boat tour on Dajin Lake is the highlight; the 9:00 AM boat has the best light, with Danxia landforms reflected on the water like a painting. 📍 Kids will be mesmerized by the pillar at Ganlu Rock Temple — tell them how ancient people put it there. In the afternoon, return to Taining Ancient Town; the Shangshu residence area is like a maze and kids won't stop running. 🍜 Warm mushroom buns and jade rolls in the ancient town suit kids' tastes — not spicy. ⚠️ Boat tickets for Dajin Lake and the ancient town admission are sold separately. Book online in advance to save waiting time. Taining is best with an overnight stay — the ancient town looks better lit up at night. This route is suitable for kids aged 6 and up; a day of boating and walking offers just the right amount of activity. 05 Yushu|Qinghai Taking kids to Yushu requires some courage, but Kekexili and Sanjiangyuan offer shocks of wonder that no urban playground can match. ⏰ For Kekexili, consider a chartered car on the edge of the Qinghai–Tibet route — leave early and return by noon. 📍 Stop at the Sonam Dargye protection station and tell kids stories about the Tibetan antelope. ⚠️ Altitudes above 4,500 m are not suitable for children under 5 or those with heart or lung conditions. Adults should take Rhodiola in advance. Sanjiangyuan National Park currently has limited open areas — check policies before you go and follow the official daily announcement. 🍜 In Yushu city, try yak yogurt and tsampa; kids may not like it, so bring snacks. Suitable for kids aged 8 and up with strong constitutions. It gets cold in Yushu during Golden Week — bring a down jacket and sunscreen at the same time, you'll experience two seasons in a day. 06 Dandong|Liaoning Dandong is a personal favorite family route. Walk the Broken Bridge on the Yalu River, climb Phoenix Mountain, and stay a night in Lvjiang Village — the pace is just right. ⏰ Visit the Broken Bridge before 8:00 AM for softer light and fewer people; the river breeze excites kids. 📍 Take a sightseeing boat for a close look at the opposite shore — kids will ask a lot of questions, so do a bit of homework first. Choose the west route on Phoenix Mountain; the steps are gentle and a 5-year-old can reach Jianyan Peak on their own. ⚠️ Glass walkways have long queues — if you're afraid of heights, don't force it. Kuandian estuary and Lvjiang Village are best explored by car, and the scenery along the way can be better than the destination. 🍜 Try the yellow clams and stir-fried chazi — must-eats. Strawberries are in winter, so you won't get them at Golden Week. Stay one night in a farmhouse in Lvjiang Village — the river fog in the morning looks like a fairyland. This route suits driving families; public transit can be tiring. 07 Chizhou|Anhui Mount Jiuhua with kids isn't about praying — it's about taking the cable car to see a sea of clouds and spotting monkeys along the mountain paths. ⏰ Take the cable car to Tiantai Peak before 7:00 AM; later the queues get unbearable. 📍 The monkeys near Baisuigong are tamer than those on Mount Huaguo, but don't feed them. ⚠️ Mountain prices are high, so buy water and snacks at the supermarket below. The vegetarian cuisine on Jiuhua Street is worth trying — kids often accept vegetarian "chicken" and "duck" substitutes. 🍜 After descending, try xiaoba and rice dumplings in Chizhou city for an affordable, filling meal. Suitable for kids aged 6 and up who can climb steps. Mountain accommodation is tight during Golden Week, so book early or stay in Kecun at the foot and go up the next day. Ticket prices and cable car operations are subject to the official daily announcement. 08 Xianning|Hubei The Red Cliffs battlefield is the most "textbook-turned-reality" stop on this trip — if your kid is learning the Three Kingdoms, this place really lands. ⏰ Go to the battlefield in the morning to see the cliff inscriptions and Yijiang Pavilion; the river breeze keeps it comfortable. 📍 The replica ancient warships in the park let kids climb and touch things, which is more fun than reading panels. ⚠️ The site is large, so grab a map at the entrance and follow the route from Fengchu Temple to the Zhou Yu statue to avoid backtracking. 🍜 For lunch in Chibi city, try fish cakes and lotus root stems — Hubei lotus root is especially sticky and tasty. If you have energy left in the afternoon, take a boat on Lushui Lake; the islet has small animals. Suitable for kids aged 7 and up with some interest in history — too young and it's just looking at rocks. Red Cliffs isn't very crowded during Golden Week, so it's comfortable to explore and doable as a day trip from Wuhan. Of these eight places, choose Zhanjiang or Dandong for an easy trip, and pick Yushu or Mount Jiuhua if you want to give the kids a bigger challenge. When traveling over Golden Week, kids' happiness matters more than checking boxes — if they're tired, go back to the hotel and rest; don't push them. Which stop are you planning to take the kids to?

Hoh Xil is the home of the Tibetan antelope and a forbidden zone for human life 🏔️ ⚠️ Important reminder: Tourists are prohibited from entering the core area of the nature reserve. Regular tourists can only sightsee along the G109 Qinghai-Tibet Highway, making a round trip from Golmud in one day. Do not trust any offers for "no-man's-land" crossings. ✅ Sonam Dargye Protection Station: Register with your ID to visit and learn about Tibetan antelope conservation ✅ Kunlun Mountain Pass: Elevation 4,768 meters, Hoh Xil boundary marker, vast plateau wilderness ✅ Chumar River and Budongquan viewing platforms: Bring a telephoto lens and wait quietly for Tibetan antelopes and Tibetan wild donkeys to appear 📝 Practical tips · The altitude is extremely high, and there is a high risk of altitude sickness. Prepare oxygen tanks and warm windbreakers; it is cold even in the early summer mornings. · Observe wildlife from a distance, keep at least 200 meters away, and do not chase or feed them. · There is mostly no signal along the way, so download offline maps in advance and take all trash out of the reserve. · Drive along the national highway for the entire journey. Driving off the roadbed into the grassland is strictly prohibited and is a violation.

Don't want to deal with the National Day crowds? These 8 niche cities are the ultimate autumn hidden gems. 01 Lanzhou | Gansu Heading northwest for National Day, Lanzhou is often treated as a transit stop where people stay one night and leave. I advise you to stay for two days. ⏰ Go to the time-honored Mogouyan Beef Noodles at 7:00 AM. The people in line are mostly locals; tourists don't start pouring in until after 8:00 AM. When ordering, ask for "erxi" (thin noodles), add chili oil separately, and remember the soup is more precious than the noodles. After eating, walk along the Yellow River to the Zhongshan Bridge. Across the bridge is Baita Mountain Park. The steps aren't steep, and you can reach the base of the White Pagoda in 20 minutes for a bird's-eye view of the Yellow River flowing through the city. 📍 You must book the Provincial Museum in advance. It's closed on Mondays, so don't waste a trip. The real "Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" is on the second floor. ⚠️ The Zhengning Road Night Market is packed after 6:00 PM. If you want to eat comfortably, go at 5:30 PM. For the milk egg sweet fermented rice, look for the old Ma's stall—don't buy from the first one you see. 🚄 The intercity high-speed train from Zhongchuan Airport to the city takes 40 minutes, saving half the time compared to a taxi. It's suitable for traveling with elderly family members. It's windy by the Yellow River, so bring a jacket. 02 Baise | Guangxi Autumn in Baise is quiet, but Haokun Lake will show you its true colors. ⏰ Arrive at Haokun Lake before 10:00 AM. The water is calm, the reflections are clearest, and the boat ride to the center of the lake feels like gliding into a painting. Tongling Grand Canyon is best visited in the afternoon. It's cool in the canyon, and you'll get soaked standing under the waterfall for 3 minutes, so bring quick-dry clothing. 📍 The Chengbi Lake loop road is great for cycling. You can rent bikes next to the dam parking lot and ride half the loop in 2 hours. 🍜 Try the rolled rice noodles on Wenming Street in the city for breakfast—they're 2 yuan each and come with yellow peel sauce. ⚠️ There are many steps in Tongling Grand Canyon, so don't push yourself if you have bad knees. If you take a sedan chair, negotiate the price beforehand. Baise isn't a popular destination during National Day, and hotel prices are significantly lower than in Nanning, making it perfect for those on a budget who still want to see beautiful scenery. 🚄 A taxi from Baise Station to Haokun Lake takes about 1 hour; carpooling is more cost-effective. 03 Huizhou | Guangdong Huizhou is the backyard garden hidden by Shenzhen residents, so it's not as crazy during National Day. ⏰ People start exercising at Huizhou West Lake at 6:00 AM. There are few tourists on the Su Causeway, and the light hits the Sizhou Pagoda at an angle, so you don't have to fight for a photo spot. Luofu Mountain is worth a full day. After taking the cable car up, you still need to walk 40 minutes to Feiyun Peak. It's windy at the summit, so bring a windbreaker. 📍 The sand at Xunliao Bay is fine, but it gets crowded during National Day. I suggest going in the evening—the sunset is 10 times better than at noon. 🍜 Try the "Ama" stuffed tofu in Qiaodong Market. Locals have been eating it since childhood, and you can eat your fill for 20 yuan per person. ⚠️ Buy tickets for Luofu Mountain and the cable car separately. Online package deals are 20 yuan cheaper, but pay attention to the usage times. It's great for couples and families; you can easily push a stroller around the West Lake, and Xunliao Bay has shallow water areas. 🚄 A taxi from Huizhou North Station to West Lake takes about 25 minutes. 04 Bortala | Xinjiang You might not recognize the name Bortala, but you've definitely seen photos of Sayram Lake. ⏰ It's cold enough to wear a down jacket at Sayram Lake during National Day. Arrive at the lake before 8:00 AM; morning mist clings to the water, and there are more swans than tourists. 📍 Anjihai Grand Canyon is closer if you're coming from Kuitun. There are no railings on the edge of the canyon, so don't stand too far back when taking photos—the wind is strong enough to push you. The mountains and waters of Wenquan County are golden in autumn, perfect for soaking in hot springs after walking along the boardwalk. 🍜 Try the naan-pit meat and milk tea in Bole city—any place you walk into will be good, averaging 40 yuan per person. ⚠️ The speed limit on the Sayram Lake loop road is strict, so don't think about speeding; the interval speed cameras are very accurate. It's great for road trips and photography, but accommodation by the lake is in high demand during National Day, so book a month in advance. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Bole Station to Sayram Lake. 05 Nanping | Fujian Nanping's main attraction is Wuyi Mountain, but don't just focus on Tianyou Peak during National Day. ⏰ Take the first bamboo raft on the Nine-Bend Stream at 7:30 AM. The light is soft, the water is calm, and the boatman will tell stories along the way. In the afternoon, head to the "Rock Bone and Flower Fragrance" roaming path near the Dahongpao mother trees. It's less crowded, the tea fields are layered, and it's an easy walk. 📍 Song Street next to Wuyi Palace is great for an evening stroll. Whether you buy tea or not, drink 3 cups before deciding. 🍜 For Zixi noodles and Langgu smoked goose in the resort area, locals recommend eating on the old street—it's 30% cheaper than in the scenic area. ⚠️ There's a 2-hour wait to climb Tianyou Peak during National Day. If you're with elderly family members, skip it and go to Taoyuan Cave instead. It's perfect for hikers and tea lovers. You must book the Nine-Bend Stream bamboo raft 3 days in advance; there are basically no tickets available on-site. 🚄 A taxi from Wuyi Mountain North Station to the scenic area takes about 20 minutes. 06 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang Autumn in Mudanjiang is short, but the Diaoshuilou Waterfall at Jingpo Lake is worth the trip. ⏰ Arrive at Jingpo Lake at 10:00 AM. The waterfall's water volume is smaller than in summer, but the water is clearer. A walk around the boardwalk by the pool takes 40 minutes. In the afternoon, head back to the city. The park along the Mudanjiang River is great for a stroll. The river breeze is cool, so wearing a thin down jacket isn't an exaggeration. 📍 The Maogong Mountain viewing platform in the Jingpo Lake scenic area has a great angle for sunset, but there are no streetlights on the way down, so you must leave before 5:00 PM. 🍜 Try the Korean-style cold noodles and rice cakes on Dongyi Pedestrian Street in the city. It's 15 yuan per person, and the cold noodle soup is full of ice chips. ⚠️ The Jingpo Lake cruise has long lines during National Day. If you want to save time, just visit the waterfall and the Underground Forest. It's perfect for people who like quiet autumn scenery. If you come the week after National Day, hotel prices are cut in half. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Mudanjiang Station to Jingpo Lake. 07 Yushu | Qinghai Yushu is for those who aren't afraid of a long journey. ⏰ You can't just enter Hoh Xil, but if you drive along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway to the Kunlun Mountain Pass, you can see Tibetan antelopes running in the distance. The morning light is good, so bring a telephoto lens. Parts of the Sanjiangyuan National Park are open, but you need to report in advance—don't just wander in. 📍 In the evening at Gesar King Square in Jiegu Town, locals dance the Guozhuang. Just stand to the side and watch; don't hold your phone up to their faces to film. 🍜 Try the yak yogurt and tsampa in Yushu city. You might not be used to the first bite, but it's delicious after adding sugar. ⚠️ The altitude is 3,700 meters. Don't shower or run around on the first day. If you have a headache, use oxygen—don't try to tough it out. It's suitable for road trippers with high-altitude experience. Accommodation options are limited during National Day, so book in advance. 🚄 Renting a car after landing at Yushu Batang Airport is the most convenient option. 08 Zhongwei | Ningxia Zhongwei is where the desert meets the Yellow River. During National Day, it's half as crowded as Shapotou is during peak season. ⏰ Get to Shapotou as soon as it opens at 8:00 AM. You won't have to wait in line for sand sliding or sheepskin rafts. Leave after 10:00 AM when the tour groups arrive. 📍 Gaomiao Temple is in the city. After 4:00 PM, the light shines through the halls, and you can see the details of the brick carvings clearly. It's free, but don't wear shorts inside. 🍜 Try the haozi noodles and stir-fried latiao around the Drum Tower. Locals eat this for lunch, and it's 20 yuan per person. ⚠️ Don't buy the full package for Shapotou activities. Just choose one between sand sliding and the Yellow River zipline. Riding a camel for 15 minutes is enough. It's great for families; there's an elevator to the dunes in the desert area, so you don't have to climb. 🚄 A taxi from Zhongwei South Station to Shapotou takes about 30 minutes. These 8 places are perfect for National Day. Which one do you want to visit first?

Worried about getting tired traveling with kids during National Day? These 5 places are worry-free and fun 01 Shigatse | Tibet Taking kids to the plateau? Don't rush to Everest Base Camp. Shigatse city is at an altitude of about 3,800 meters. We recommend using it as your first stop to acclimate for two days. ⏰ Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in the morning. The kora path is gentle and barely stroller-friendly. You might need to carry younger kids for a bit. The debating courtyard is lively after 3:00 PM, and elementary schoolers will be mesmerized. Please check official announcements for ticket prices and opening hours. Photography is prohibited inside the halls; keep your phone away. Stay in the old town near Beijing Road, where sweet tea houses are right outside. 🍜 Tibetan noodles with sweet tea are kid-friendly. For Everest, we recommend chartering a car for two days. The road is bumpy, so have motion sickness patches ready. ⚠️ Don't trust roadside touts offering "Everest round-trip in one day"; it's impossible. 02 Haixi | Qinghai This route is suitable for elementary schoolers and up; younger kids might get fussy during the long drives. 🚄 Fly into Golmud or Delingha and rent a car. Avoid driving at night. ⏰ Arrive at Emerald Lake before 10:00 AM for less wind, better reflections, and fewer crowds for photos. Qarhan Salt Lake is less crowded than Chaka. The salt crust is sharp, so have kids wear thick-soled shoes. The line for the small train at Chaka Salt Lake is long; we recommend walking in with kids. ⚠️ At an altitude of around 3,000 meters, avoid bathing, running, or jumping on the first day. Stay in Delingha city for easy supplies. You can return from Kunlun Mountain Pass in one day. 🍜 Order the mild version of the lamb hot pot; kids can have it with yogurt. It's windy at Kunlun Mountain Pass, so bring windbreakers and keep an oxygen canister handy for peace of mind. 03 Ordos | Inner Mongolia Xiangshawan is a paradise for younger kids; there's plenty of sand. ⏰ Enter the scenic area after 4:00 PM to avoid the sun and hot sand while sand sliding. The cable car peak is in the morning, so plan accordingly. Xiansha Island has many activities like camel riding and small trains. Buying a package ticket is more cost-effective; please check official announcements for pricing. ⚠️ Don't run barefoot in the shaded areas of sand dunes; there are many hidden pits. The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is more cultural and suitable for middle and high schoolers; rent an audio guide. Stay in Kangbashi for new hotels, wide roads, and evening fountain shows. 🚄 It's about a 40-minute taxi ride from Dongsheng West Station to Kangbashi. 🍜 Hand-grabbed mutton with milk tea; kids can just eat the plain meat. 04 Guangzhou | Guangdong Guangzhou is a safe bet for National Day family travel—it's hot, but manageable. ⏰ Enter Chimelong at 9:00 AM. Hit the Panda Pavilion first, then the rides, and leave when it gets crowded in the afternoon. Focus on animals for younger kids, and add the amusement park for elementary schoolers. We recommend visiting Canton Tower in the evening to catch both the 🌆 sunset and night views. The Ferris wheel line is long, so book tickets online in advance; check official announcements for rules. You can finish touring the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in half an hour; the wood and brick carvings are interesting and great for elementary schoolers. Stay in the Zhujiang New Town or Hanxi Chimelong area; the former is convenient for night tours, and the latter is easier for families. 🍜 Order shrimp dumplings and siu mai for dim sum; kids love them. Hike Baiyun Mountain in the evening via the gentle slope at Yuntai Garden, which is easy for seniors too. 05 Jinhua | Zhejiang Hengdian is great for middle and high schoolers; younger kids will just be watching the spectacle. 🚄 Take the light rail from Yiwu Station to Hengdian; it's half the price of a taxi. ⏰ The Qin King Palace is less crowded in the morning. Go to Dream Valley in the afternoon for water activities, and don't miss the night show. Buy tickets individually or as a package; check official announcements for rules. ⚠️ The shuttle bus between scenic spots has long lines, making strollers a burden. Shuanglong Scenic Area is great for escaping the heat, but the caves are slippery, so hold your child's hand. Stay near Wansheng Street in Hengdian for plenty of dining options. 🍜 Try Dongyang Womian (noodle soup) or virgin boy eggs if you're brave. For elementary schoolers, we recommend picking only two scenic spots; doing too much will be exhausting. 06 Guilin | Guangxi The Li River bamboo raft is the highlight; the section from Xingping to Nine-Horse Mural Hill is the most stable. ⏰ Get on the raft before 9:00 AM while the mist is still on the river—it's like a painting. Make sure younger kids wear life jackets and don't reach for the water. Reed Flute Cave has a constant temperature and is a good backup for rainy days, but there are many steps, so be careful if carrying a child. The Longji Rice Terraces are golden during National Day. The cable car line is at least an hour long, so we recommend staying at a guesthouse on the mountain to watch the sunrise the next day. ⚠️ Don't trust "low-price bamboo rafts" at the pier; they'll likely overcharge you halfway. Stay in Xingping Ancient Town, right by the river. 🍜 Choose the swordfish for beer fish; it has fewer bones. Have Guilin rice noodles for breakfast; kids can mix them themselves. 07 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu Touring the three mountains is suitable for seniors and kids; the pace is slow. ⏰ Visit Jinshan in the morning, have pot-lid noodles at Xijindu at noon, take the ferry to Jiaoshan in the afternoon, and finish by viewing the river scenery at Beigushan. Jinshan Temple has many steps; leave your stroller at the entrance. Jurong Maoshan is suitable for elementary schoolers and up. The cable car saves energy; check official announcements for ticket and cable car prices. ⚠️ Don't accept "free incense" from stalls on the mountain; they'll ask for donations later. Stay near Xijindu for comfortable evening walks. 🍜 Try the pork aspic with vinegar; kids can eat it like a snack. It's about a 15-minute taxi ride from Zhenjiang Station to Jinshan, and the bus is also convenient. 08 Yichun | Heilongjiang Yichun during National Day is a palette of colors and less crowded. 🚄 Fly to Harbin and transfer to a train to Yichun, or fly directly to Lindu Airport. ⏰ The morning light at Tangwanghe Forest Park is great. The boardwalks between the stone forests are gentle, so younger kids can walk on their own. ⚠️ Temperatures in the forest area are near freezing in the morning and evening, so don't skimp on down jackets. There's little food in the scenic area, so bring bread and hot water. Stay in Tangwanghe Town, which is close to the scenic area entrance, so you won't have to rush in the morning. Elementary schoolers can pick pine cones and identify tree species, while middle and high schoolers can take longer hiking trails. 🍜 Order the pork rib hot pot; kids will fight over the corn cakes. Walk slowly on slippery boardwalks and don't run.

8 must-visit small cities for a reverse National Day trip 01 Baoshan | Yunnan Head to Tengchong for the National Day holiday; airfare is significantly cheaper than Dali, and it's less crowded. 🚄 Land at Tuofeng Airport and take a taxi to Heshun Ancient Town (about 40 minutes). Don't rush into the scenic area; drop your luggage at your guesthouse first. Heshun Ancient Town is best explored before 7:00 AM. 📍 At that time, only locals are at the laundry pavilion by the Xian River. The light hits at an angle—perfect for photos. Afterward, grab a bowl of pea starch noodles. ⚠️ Just browse the jade shops in the ancient town; don't make impulsive purchases. Visit Beihai Wetland after 4:00 PM. Boat and admission tickets cost just over 100 yuan. The grass mats feel soft underfoot, like stepping on a wet sponge. ⏰ Boats stop running at 6:30 PM, so don't arrive right at closing time. Save the Tengchong Volcano and Geothermal Area for the second day. The "Big Boiling Pot" spring is spectacular, but the sulfur smell is strong. The Yunfeng Mountain cable car is very steep; if you're afraid of heights, your legs might shake, but the scenery is worth the ticket price. 02 Shantou | Guangdong Nan'ao Island is the most worthwhile stop in Shantou, but be prepared for traffic jams when heading to the island during the National Day holiday. 🚄 Take bus 161 from Shantou Station to the island; it's less stressful than driving yourself, as two-hour traffic jams on the bridge are common during holidays. Renting an e-bike on the island is the most flexible option, costing 80–100 yuan per day. 📍 Riding from Houzhai Town to Qing'ao Bay along the island loop road is refreshing, and it's freer than taking a sightseeing bus. ⚠️ Don't eat seafood near the pier; the prices are inflated. For food, grab a bowl of oyster omelet with fish ball soup in Houzhai Town in the morning. 🍜 Choose an oyster omelet with crispy edges; the soggy ones aren't cooked properly. In the afternoon, visit the Tropic of Cancer Square; when it's not crowded, you can capture the vast coastline. Staying in Qing'ao Bay is convenient for sunrise, but hotel prices double during the National Day holiday. If you're on a budget, stay in Houzhai Town; there are more dining options, and it's a 10-minute bike ride to the beach. 03 Guyuan | Ningxia Xumishan Grottoes is the least popular spot on this trip; you basically won't have to wait in line during the National Day holiday. 🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from Guyuan Station to the grottoes. It's recommended to charter a car for the round trip, as it's hard to get a taxi back. The grottoes are carved into red sandstone and feature statues from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties. 📍 The Great Buddha in Cave 51 is the best preserved. ⚠️ Some caves are locked with iron gates; don't force them open—viewing them from the outside is just as good. ⏰ Before 10:00 AM, the light shines into the caves at an angle, making it best for photos. In the afternoon, you'll be shooting against the light, and faces will be dark. If bringing elderly travelers, be careful; the steps are steep and lack railings, so take it slow. The museum at the foot of the mountain is worth a 30-minute visit to understand the history of the grottoes. On the way back to the city, stop for a bowl of Guyuan mutton paomo; the soup is rich, the meat is tender, and it's lighter than the version in Xi'an. 04 Yushu | Qinghai Hoh Xil and Sanjiangyuan National Park are already quite cold during the National Day holiday. 🚄 Land at Yushu Batang Airport and charter a car to enter the nature reserve; it costs 800–1,000 yuan per day, but carpooling is more cost-effective. ⚠️ The altitude is over 4,500 meters, so altitude sickness is no joke. Arrive in Yushu city two days early to acclimate; don't rush in right after getting off the plane. Start taking Rhodiola rosea a week in advance; it's useless if you start after arriving. 📍 The Sonam Dargye Protection Station is a spot where you can park and take photos. Seeing Tibetan antelopes depends on luck; by October, they have already migrated deeper into the reserve. The wetlands in Sanjiangyuan are vast; ⏰ when the light is good in the afternoon, the water surface looks like crushed silver. Bring enough dry food and hot water; there are no restaurants in the reserve. Take all your trash with you and don't feed the wildlife. This trip is suitable for those who are physically fit and can endure hardship; be cautious if traveling with children. 05 Karamay | Xinjiang Urho Ghost City is windy but uncrowded during the National Day holiday. 🚄 It's about a two-hour drive from Karamay Station to Urho. It's recommended to join a one-day tour, as arranging transportation yourself is too much hassle. The Yardang landforms look best at dusk; ⏰ enter the scenic area after 6:00 PM, when the light turns the mounds a golden red. 📍 Walk 200 meters deeper from the viewing platform for fewer crowds and better photo angles. ⚠️ The small train in the scenic area costs extra, but it's actually not far to walk. The wind is strong enough to blow your hat off, so wear a tight one. Wear sand-proof shoes; fine sand getting into sneakers is very uncomfortable. You can have a big plate of chicken when you return to the city. 🍜 Restaurants in Karamay serve generous portions; a small size is enough for two people. Choose accommodation in the city center; don't stay near the scenic area, as there's nothing there at night. 06 Shigatse | Tibet Mount Everest Base Camp and Tashilhunpo Monastery—one is in the clouds, the other is in the city. 🚄 You need to charter a car from Shigatse Station to Mount Everest; it's a two-day round trip. Prices are high during the National Day holiday, so book in advance. Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in the morning; ⏰ it opens at 9:00 AM. Follow the locals on their kora; the atmosphere is quieter than the Potala Palace. 📍 The bronze Buddha in the Maitreya Chapel is worth seeing, but photography is not allowed inside the hall. At Mount Everest, ⚠️ temperatures drop below -10°C at night in October, so a sleeping bag and down jacket are must-haves. The tent guesthouses at the base camp have basic facilities; be cautious if you are a neat freak. Altitude sickness is even more intense than in Yushu, so have oxygen bottles ready. If the weather is good, ⏰ you can see the golden sunrise on the mountain around 5:00 AM. Don't get upset if you can't see it; plateau weather changes in an instant. 07 Taizhou | Zhejiang Tiantai Mountain, Taizhou Prefecture City, and Shenxianju are scattered; it's recommended to pick two for the National Day holiday. 🚄 Get off at Taizhou West Station; it's closest to Linhai Ancient City, a 20-minute taxi ride away. Taizhou Prefecture City Cultural Tourism Area is best explored in the evening. 📍 Eat the "egg white sheep tail" on Ziyang Street while it's hot; it tastes fishy when cold. ⚠️ There's an extra charge for night tours of the city wall; it's free to go up during the day, and the view is just as good. Leave a full day for Shenxianju; the cable car line can be an hour long during the National Day holiday. ⏰ Arrive at the South Gate before 7:30 AM to save a lot of time. There's a line for photos at Ruyi Bridge; if you're afraid of heights, take the plank road on the side. Tiantai Mountain is suitable for those who like temples and waterfalls; Shiliang Waterfall is most spectacular after rain. Choose the Prefecture City if traveling with elderly people, as it's mostly flat. Choose Shenxianju if traveling with children; the cable car and plank road make it easy. 08 Yantai | Shandong Penglai Pavilion, Changdao Island, and Longkou Nanshan—these three spots in Yantai are enough for a three-day trip. 🚄 It's about an hour and a half from Yantai Station to Penglai; taking the high-speed train to Penglai City Station is closer. Enter Penglai Pavilion as soon as it opens at 8:00 AM to ⏰ avoid tour groups. 📍 The rear corridor offers the best view of the sea. ⚠️ The cable car and the pavilion have separate fees, so think before you buy. Don't count on seeing a mirage; that's a rare, unpredictable event. You need to take a boat to Changdao Island; book ferry tickets in advance for the National Day holiday. Stay at a fisherfolk guesthouse on the island. 🍜 The mackerel dumplings and seafood noodles are hearty. The sunset at Jiuzhang Cliff is worth waiting for; it's windy, so wear a jacket. Longkou Nanshan is best for the last day; the Great Buddha is spectacular, but it's quite commercialized. ⚠️ Don't get scammed into paying for incense; sincerity is what matters. Depart from Yantai Station on your way back and pick up some apples. Take a reverse trip to these eight small cities during the National Day holiday; it's more comfortable than crowding into popular destinations. Which one do you want to visit most? Let's chat in the comments.

Starting from Golmud, we drove along the G109 Qinghai-Tibet Highway, heading all the way to the Yuzhu Peak viewing platform and Budongquan. We truly witnessed the majestic grandeur of the Kunlun Mountains, with endless rugged peaks and vast, magnificent scenery, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of China's landscape. Along the way, snow-capped mountains stood in the clouds, and the wilderness was vast and boundless. The snow-covered Yuzhu Peak was imposing. The crystal-clear Budongquan flows year-round, appearing exceptionally lively and healing on the desolate plateau. The world is vast, and people feel small against the scenery; every frame is a grand Northwest landscape painting that strikes the heart with awe. 🚗 Real road conditions & driving tips The road from Golmud to the scenic area is complex, with many washboard roads and potholes. The ride is bumpy, and the route is heavily trafficked by large trucks, with high speeds and dense curves. Although the view on the plateau section is open, driving risks are high. ⚠️ Be sure to slow down throughout the journey, do not overtake in oncoming lanes, and do not stop on the road to take photos. Only park in designated scenic pull-offs. The altitude is high and temperature fluctuations are significant, so fill up on gas in advance, prepare windproof clothing, prevent altitude sickness, respect the mountain roads, and travel safely.
