We weren't expecting anything special, but what we saw inside literally shocked us! 😱 We accidentally stumbled upon the store: Hǎo Xiǎng Lái Lingshi (Hǎo Xiǎng Lái Lingshi) 💥 Why is this place a tourist paradise? The prices are shocking! Even everyone's favorite and familiar 7-Eleven is nervously smoking in the background. The prices on snacks and drinks here are 2, even 3 times lower! Assortment: Huge shelves filled with the most unusual Chinese sweets, crazy-flavored chips, dried seafood, marmalade, and teas. The Huangpu Yanzhong Greenland is the main venue this year. I liked the Birdsong and Fragrant Flowers area and the night heron installation by the lake the most. The lighting is soft and blends in with the woods and the lake; it's not one of those flashy light shows. Tips: ▪️ Time: Sept 17–Oct 16, lights on at 6:30 PM, ends at 11:00 PM ▪️ Transportation: You can get off at Dashijie Metro Station, Exit 3. After you finish, you can go directly to Exit 4 of the Site of the First CPC National Congress · South Huangpi Road Metro Station. ▪️ Admission: The greenland is free. The concert hall projection show is free but requires a booking. It's very crowded at night, and the boardwalk by the lake is quite narrow, so watch your step when taking photos. The mist is intermittent, so you'll need a bit of luck to catch the Tyndall light.

Shanghai often makes you feel that you should keep moving: another landmark, another neighbourhood, another photograph. Yet one of my favourite walks in the city became memorable precisely because, for a while, we stopped trying to see as much as possible. We started from Nanjing Road and walked towards Suzhou Creek. Almost immediately, the atmosphere changed. There were very few people along the water, and the city felt unusually quiet and peaceful. Instead of following a checklist, we simply continued along the riverbank and let the route unfold naturally. Our first proper stop was the Shanghai Postal Museum. Its collection of old postage stamps was surprisingly extensive, although we are not serious stamp enthusiasts. We spent more time looking at the building itself. Sometimes a museum is worth entering not only for its exhibits, but also for the character of the place housing them, and this was one of those occasions for us. Afterwards, we returned to the waterfront and found a cafe overlooking the water, with the Oriental Pearl Tower visible in the distance. This became the moment I remember most clearly from the entire walk. We sat beside Suzhou Creek with cold coffee and dessert, watching everyday life pass around us. Nothing dramatic happened, and there was no famous attraction demanding our attention. We did not need to reach the next place quickly or search for the perfect photograph. We could simply sit, look at the water and observe Shanghai from a distance. Eventually, we continued towards North Bund. The walk gradually brought the familiar skyline back into view, but by then it felt less like the main destination and more like a natural ending to a quiet afternoon. The route connected several very different versions of Shanghai: busy Nanjing Road, the calm banks of Suzhou Creek, the historic Postal Museum and the open waterfront of North Bund. Yet the best part was not any individual stop. It was the space between them and the freedom to pause whenever we wanted. If you try this walk, leave some time unplanned. Amap / Gaode Maps — A Step-by-Step Guide This app is the most convenient tool for finding real Chinese addresses, planning routes, and checking metro/bus schedules, travel times, and—most importantly—the specific station exit you need. In China's massive megacities, taking the wrong exit can easily cost you an extra 15–20 minutes of walking around a single block. 😵💫 📱 What to Install Search for: 高德地图 or Amap It is best to install it early and practice a bit before your trip. The interface is primarily in Chinese, but the basic logic is easy to pick up: 📍 map point 🚇 metro 🚌 bus 🚕 taxi 🚶 walking 🔎 The Golden Rule: Search in Chinese This is the most important tip. Instead of: Temple of Heaven Use: 天坛 Instead of: Forbidden City Use: 故宫博物院 Instead of: Universal Beijing Resort Use: 北京环球度假区 Using the Chinese name almost always yields a more accurate result. 💡 That’s why I save every location in my itinerary with both the English and Chinese names. For example: Temple of Heaven — 天坛 Then, just copy and paste the characters into Amap. 🗺 How to Plan a Route Find your destination. Tap the route button. Because a route that "looks close on the map" in Beijing or Shanghai can suddenly turn out to be quite far away. 🚇 Amap is Especially Useful for the Metro It shows you more than just the station. It helps you understand: which line to take; where to transfer; how many stops; which exit to choose. Choosing the right exit is critical. In the Chinese metro, exits are labeled with letters and numbers: A, B, C, D or A1, A2, B1… Sometimes the correct exit is right in front of your destination, while another leaves you on the opposite side of a massive intersection. 📌 That’s why I always check Amap before leaving the station to see exactly which Exit / 出口 I need. 🏙 Another Useful Feature If a location has multiple entrances, parking lots, or buildings, Amap often shows them separately. Panic doesn't start in the train car, but when the station offers 14 exits, each leading to a different version of the city. Keep these instructions 🚇 1. Find the right station On Chinese maps, the station name ends in "地铁站" — metro station. It's easy to plan your route in Amap — "高德地图" or Baidu Maps — "百度地图." Look not only at the line but also at the exit number: "出口" — exit. In China, exit 2 and exit 7 can be found in different circumstances. 2. Select a payment method The most convenient option is a transport code in Alipay: Transport / Metro → Metro / QR Code → Metro QR Code / QR Code. You need to scan the code upon entering and exiting. The service varies by city, so activate it in advance and allow the app to determine your location. If the code doesn't work, buy a Single Journey Ticket at a ticket vending machine or service center. Under the line name, it will say: Training toward… Direction toward… In the direction of… Check the next station — Next Station — (下一站). The line color helps, but the final station is more reliable. 5. Transfer Transfers are indicated by the word (换乘) — transfer. You don't need to exit through the turnstiles; follow the colored signs for the desired line. At larger stations, the transfer can be long — the metro has decided to add a short free walk. 6. Don't lose your ticket and QR code Keep your single ticket until the end of your trip: you'll need it when you exit. If you're using a QR code, keep Alipay open and keep your phone charged. One code is usually valid for one passenger. 7. Keep an eye on the time First Train — 首班车. Last Train — 末班车. Different lines and directions have their own schedules. After 10:30 PM, I always check for the last train in advance: the Chinese subway is fast, but staying overnight for a tourist isn't an option. 8. If the turnstile doesn't open Find the Service Center — 服务中心 and say: 我出不去了 I can't exit The employee will check your ticket or ride and open the gate. I honestly don’t know how to describe this dinner without saying WOW. 😍 Taste of China in Shanghai was one of those experiences where I kept thinking, “What is going to happen next?” It is not just a restaurant. It is a whole show built around Chinese food and culture. During the dinner, you travel through different regions of China, with each part bringing new food, stories, music, performances and incredible visual effects. And the food itself was really delicious. 🥢 What I especially loved was that everything was explained. We were given headphones with simultaneous translation, so I could actually understand what was happening and learn more about the dishes and the story behind them. This made such a big difference for me. There were performances during the dinner, and the whole space kept changing around us. It felt like I wasn’t simply sitting at a table having dinner. I was travelling through China without leaving my seat. There was so much happening that I honestly had an endless feeling of excitement. Every new part of the show brought another surprise. ✨ And this is exactly why I would happily go again. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the price. It is definitely not an everyday dinner. 😄 But if you ask me whether I think this experience is worth having at least once in Shanghai, my answer is absolutely yes. For me, this was a real Must-Try Food experience, but also much more than food. It was beautiful, delicious, spectacular and incredibly interesting. Sometimes you go to a restaurant because you already know you love the food. And sometimes you go simply because you are curious about the experience. For me, this was definitely the second kind of place. The interior was so unusual that it immediately caught my attention. Everything felt a little futuristic, and even the dishes were designed to surprise you. The presentation was definitely the main attraction here. Some dishes arrived with a little show, including paper being lit at the table. And then came the dessert, which I had to break open with a small hammer. 😂 I loved moments like this because you never quite knew what was going to happen when the next dish arrived. Even the drinks had very unusual presentations, which made the whole dinner feel more like a little performance than an ordinary meal. The restaurant was very popular when we visited. There were quite a lot of people and a small queue, but the atmosphere was lively and it was interesting to watch everything happening around us while we waited. Would I come back a second time? Probably not. 😄 But would I recommend going once just to experience it? Definitely! For me, this is a Must-Try Food experience in Shanghai more because of the creativity, presentation and atmosphere than because it became one of my favourite meals. It was curious, beautiful, a little funny and definitely memorable. And sometimes that is exactly what I want from a restaurant while travelling. Sometimes the most memorable food is not the most unusual dish, but the one that makes you smile the moment it arrives. In Hong Kong, I found exactly that. We went to a Michelin-recognised restaurant and ordered some classic steamed dumplings, which were already a little piece of comfort for me. I love dumplings, and after trying different food in Hong Kong, I have to admit that many flavours were simply not what I am used to. So these dumplings felt like a little rescue. 😄🥟 They were good, but if I am honest, I still prefer dumplings in Shanghai. Shanghai is hard to beat for me when it comes to this kind of food. But then our steamed buns arrived. They were shaped like little peaches, with a filling inside, and they were unbelievably cute. 🍑 I honestly spent a moment just looking at them because they were so beautifully made. The shape, the tiny details and the colour made them look almost like little pieces of art. Of course, we eventually ate them. 😂 I love when food can be beautiful and fun at the same time. These peach-shaped buns were exactly that. And I think this is why I remember this meal. It was not only about whether every dish was my favourite. It was about discovering something new, seeing how much attention can be given to the appearance of even a small steamed bun, and enjoying a little moment of joy in the middle of a busy Hong Kong day. This place was described by locals as the “Hermès of the foot massage world,” and honestly, I can see why. The interiors feel more like a luxury hotel lounge than a typical massage place, glossy marble, beautiful floral displays, and huge lounge chairs you can completely sink into. And despite how nice the place looks, the price is shockingly low, with the cheapest package for 30 minutes at less than $20 USD. Once you’re settled in, you can watch shows on a massive screen while they bring out fruits, noodles, rice dishes, snacks, and drinks. And after the massage you can stay and rest for a while instead of immediately having to leave. Great for going solo or with a small group of friends or for days when a full-on 24-hour sauna experience sounds like a little too much and you just want a quick break. When it comes to Disneyland, I become a completely different traveller. Normally I can be quite spontaneous, but Disney? I PLAN. EVERYTHING. Before the trip, I’m already checking ticket prices and promotions, figuring out transportation, researching which rides need Premier Access, looking for exclusive merchandise, and—very importantly—finding out what special food I need to try! I even think about the small things: water bottle, portable fan, snacks, comfortable shoes, fireworks timing… and whether staying at a Disney hotel is worth the extra money. Why? I absolutely loved this brand; they have so many unique designs. I picked one up for myself and another as a gift. Le Specs Sunglasses (~$60). Lots of unconventional and super stylish options that look high-end. Adidas Denim Jacket (~$170). I was initially looking for those specific bomber jackets but couldn't find them; however, I stumbled upon this jacket instead. It’s fantastic! The local Adidas collection in China is impressive, with many unique pieces. 💄 Cosmetics Harmay (~$40). A famous Chinese beauty retailer. Their specialty is luxury brands in sample sizes, allowing you to try high-end cosmetics without buying a full-sized jar. I only got skincare, but they have plenty of makeup too. Qingzhi Creams (~$15 for 2). These are the ones designed based on birthdays. I got them for myself and as gifts; I really liked the scent and texture. 🍬 Sweets M&M's (~$25). A classic: a huge selection of candies and merch. We got some for ourselves and for relatives with kids. They even have a custom printing service for the candies. White Rabbit Candy ($5–10 per bag). I visited Chenshan Botanical Garden this weekend for a floral rendezvous, and the moment I stepped inside, I was instantly captivated by the sea of ​​flowers. Orange-yellow California poppies and blue philodendrons intertwined, creating layers upon layers of blossoms stretching into the distance. Various buttercups and delphiniums bloomed in profusion, their colors both gentle and vibrant. A gentle breeze swayed the waves of flowers, sunlight fell on the petals, and my eyes were filled with vivid colors. Large trees stood quietly at the edge of the flower fields, set against a backdrop of blue sky and white clouds; every snapshot was a soothing scene. Strolling slowly, inhaling the delicate fragrance of the flowers, wandering among the blossoms, leaving all worries to the spring breeze—this was the most comfortable time of spring.

Shanghai looks surprisingly easy to navigate on a map, but I quickly realised there is a difference between being “near” a place and actually getting there. The city is huge, some metro stations feel like underground cities, and you can easily spend 30 minutes getting from the platform to the street and then walking to your destination. These are the things that genuinely made getting around Shanghai easier for me: 🚇 Use the metro for the backbone of your trip. For sightseeing, the metro was by far the easiest way to cover long distances without worrying about traffic. I’d use it to move between neighbourhoods, then explore each area on foot. ✈️ Think about your airport transfer before your first day. If you arrive at Pudong, don’t automatically assume a taxi is your only option. The airport has direct public transport connections into the city, so check your hotel location first and decide whether the metro, Maglev or Didi makes the most sense. If you arrive through Hongqiao, the situation is different again, as the airport and railway station are already very well connected to the metro network. 📍 The metro station is not always your final destination. This is something I underestimated. You might get off at the “right” station and still have another 15 to 20 minutes of walking before reaching the actual attraction, café or street you came for. This is especially noticeable around the Former French Concession, where I often found that walking between nearby places was actually more enjoyable than taking another metro stop. 👟 Some Shanghai days are better done almost entirely on foot. Instead of thinking attraction by attraction, I’d pick a neighbourhood and explore it properly. For example, Wukang Road → Anfu Road → Hunan Road works much better as one walking route than repeatedly jumping on and off the metro. 🚕 Didi is your best backup when you’re tired. After several hours of walking, I stopped trying to make every journey work by metro. Didi was particularly useful for awkward routes, getting back to the hotel at the end of the day, or places where the nearest station still meant a long walk. One important thing: in busy areas, check the exact pickup point carefully. Your driver may not be able to stop directly where you are standing. 🌆 Don’t forget that the Huangpu River changes your route. The Bund and Pudong look incredibly close to each other, but the river means you can’t simply walk straight across. If you’re planning both sides on the same day, check the crossing options in advance rather than assuming you can just walk over. 🧳 Know where you can leave your luggage. If you have a late flight or arrive before hotel check-in, luggage storage at major transport hubs can be extremely useful. It can save you from spending your first or last day dragging a suitcase around Shanghai. 📱 Have your hotel address ready before leaving the airport. I’d keep the hotel name, address and Chinese address saved on my phone. Even if you plan to use the metro, this is useful for Didi, asking for directions or getting back to your accommodation when you’re tired. ⏰ Don’t plan Shanghai like a checklist. One of my biggest mistakes would have been trying to see too many neighbourhoods in one day. Shanghai rewards slower days. Pick one part of the city, walk, stop for coffee, explore a few side streets and then move somewhere else later. My ideal combination became: Metro for long distances → walking within neighbourhoods → Didi when I was tired or the route was inconvenient.
