Mekong Magic: A Day Drifting Through Thoi Son Island
I booked a Mekong Delta day trip from Ho Chi Minh City that focused on Thoi Son Island, and it turned out to be the most relaxing day of my Vietnam journey. The moment our bus rolled into My Tho and I stepped onto the boat, the chaos of the city disappeared behind me and was replaced by wide brown rivers, coconut palms, and the slow rhythm of delta life.
The cruise to Thoi Son, also known as Unicorn Island, set the tone for the day. We passed floating houses, fishing boats, and small islets scattered across the Tien River, while our guide explained how families here live off fruit orchards, beekeeping, and aquaculture. The river air was warm and slightly humid, but there was a constant breeze that made it surprisingly pleasant.
Landing on the island felt like walking into a giant tropical garden. Narrow concrete paths led us through lush orchards of longan, sapodilla, and other fruits, with canals crisscrossing quietly on both sides. At one stop, local farmers invited us to taste seasonal fruits paired with hot tea and honey produced directly on the island; the honey, made mainly from longan flowers, had a distinctly rich and fragrant taste.
One of my favorite moments was the slow sampan ride through the narrow, palm lined canals. Sitting in a small wooden boat, conical hat on my head, we glided silently under a canopy of water coconut trees while locals gently paddled us along. It was quiet except for the sound of birds, paddles slicing the water, and occasional greetings from people living in simple houses along the canals.
Back on land, the tour introduced us to some of the island’s traditional crafts. We watched locals making coconut candy by hand, from grating the coconut to boiling and cutting the sticky mixture, and of course tasted the final product while it was still warm. There was also a stop at a small honey farm where we learned about beekeeping in the delta and tried honey tea with lime and pollen.
Lunch was a satisfying highlight. Many tours include a set meal featuring local Mekong specialties such as fried elephant ear fish, fresh spring rolls, and simple but flavorful vegetable dishes. Eating in an open air riverside restaurant, surrounded by trees and the sound of the river, made even a basic meal feel special. The portion size was generous enough to keep me energized for the rest of the afternoon.
The cultural touches along the way made the experience feel more personal. At one garden house, we sat on low stools while local musicians performed Don Ca Tai Tu, traditional southern Vietnamese folk music recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Even though I could not understand the lyrics, the melodies and the laid back atmosphere matched the slow pace of the delta perfectly.
Overall, the day trip was surprisingly affordable for what it included. A typical full day tour from Ho Chi Minh City, covering transport, boat rides, sampan, fruit tasting, folk music, and lunch, usually falls into a comfortable budget range for most travelers. Considering the variety of activities packed into one day, it felt like excellent value and a very easy escape from the city without needing to plan anything complicated.
If you enjoy slow travel, river scenery, and glimpses of local life, Thoi Son Island is a gentle and memorable way to experience the Mekong Delta in just one day. It is not about dramatic sights but about atmosphere: sipping honey tea under fruit trees, cruising along quiet canals, and watching everyday life unfold on the water.
