Ushguli is located at an altitude of 2,100, it’s one of the highest summits of the Greater Caucasus mountains. The most notable feature of Ushguli are the defensive tower houses( Svan tower) which were built primarily between the 9th and 12th centuries. Besides, The area is snow-covered for 6 months of the year, and often the road to Mestia is impassable. It used to need 4 days of hiking from mestia to this hidden heaven, but now there’s unpaved road that took only 2 hours drive from mestia. We went there by late May, took a day trip from mestia to there. If yiu were in Georgia, you should definitely pay a visit here.#georgia #Ushguli

Here’s how to explore Mestia, a haven for nature lovers feeling those “I need air and scenery!” vibes 🏔️🌸 Top Spots to Visit Chalaadi Glacier (4PG8+9PV, Mestia, Georgia) – Open year round, all day. Hiking is a must! The glacier trek starts near Mestia, winding through wildflower meadows, pine forests, and rushing rivers. Even in summer, the air is crisp—so pack layers. The fresh air is next-level—seriously, city lungs will thank you. Start your hike early: you’ll dodge crowds and catch the morning sun lighting up those peaks. Getting Around Marshrutkas (minibuses) run between Mestia and nearby villages, but getting to the glacier is easiest by taxi or on foot from town. Mestia is compact, so walking is perfect for most trips. Food Recommendations Try local Svan cuisine (like kubdari and cheese bread) at “Cafe Laila” (central Mestia). You’ll need fuel for those hikes. Key Destination Tips No visa needed for most travelers—check before you go! Weather changes fast, so a rain jacket is essential. Perched at an elevation of roughly 2,100 to 2,200 meters at the foot of Mount Shkhara—Georgia’s highest peak (5,193 m)—Ushguli is widely recognized as one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. Situated in the Upper Svaneti region along the headwaters of the Enguri River, this remote mountain enclave is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its extraordinarily preserved medieval architecture and unique indigenous Svan mountain culture. Ushguli is not a single village, but a compact community of four historic hamlets: Zhibiani, Chvibiani, Chazhashi, and Murkmeli. Dominated by dozens of 9th- to 12th-century defensive stone watchtowers (koshki) backdropped by permanent glaciers, the settlement feels suspended in time, offering unparalleled mountain trekking, horse trekking, and alpine photography. 📍 Key Highlights & Top Experiences Chazhashi Medieval Tower Complex: The architectural heart of Ushguli and an open-air museum of defensive masonry. Chazhashi alone preserves over 20 original Svan towers and fortified stone dwellings (machubi). These defensive structures were built by individual clans to repel invaders, shelter livestock, and provide refuge during historical blood feuds. Lamaria Church of the Mother of God (Zhibiani): Perched on an isolated grassy hillock overlooking the valley in the uppermost hamlet of Zhibiani. Dating to the 9th–10th centuries, this small stone sanctuary features medieval frescoes, ancient defensive walls, and an uninterrupted view framing the glaciers of Mount Shkhara directly behind its stone cross. Trekking to the Shkhara Glacier: A classic 8-kilometer (one-way) alpine trek following the rocky Enguri River canyon directly toward the snout of the Shkhara Glacier. The route features gentle elevation gains, alpine wildflower meadows, roaring glacial streams, and dramatic views of the Great Caucasus wall (approx. 5–6 hours round-trip, or doable via horse trek/4WD taxi). Queen Tamar’s Summer and Winter Towers: Remnants of royal defensive fortresses associated with Georgia’s celebrated 12th-century monarch, Queen Tamar. Perched on high strategic bluffs flanking the valley, they offer panoramic vantage points looking back down over the stone roofs and towers of all four hamlets. Traditional Svan Culinary Heritage: Experience local mountain gastronomy at traditional guesthouses. Highlights include Kubdari (a spiced, meat-stuffed flatbread seasoned with wild Svan salt), Chvishtari (cornbread stuffed with salty Svan cheese), and rich local curd dishes paired with homemade herbal teas. 🚶 Recommended 1-Day Touring Itinerary 09. 00 – Arrival from Mestia & Hamlet Walk: Arrive via 4WD from Mestia. Begin walking through the narrow mud and stone pathways of Chvibiani and Chazhashi to view medieval stone architecture. 10. 15 – Lamaria Church Visit: Ascend the gentle hill to the 10th-century Lamaria Church in Zhibiani to explore the interior medieval frescoes and photograph the church to

We arrived in Mestia and drove to Ushguli in the morning. The road is good, so it's easy to get there. We went to the Shkhara glacier. The place is very beautiful. I wanted to stop and take pictures, and when you look, it's like you're in a fairy tale. It's a very beautiful place.

In late September, the Caucasus sheds the heat of midsummer and avoids the bitter cold of winter, ushering in the gentlest and clearest season of the year. With cool temperatures between 8–15 degrees Celsius, gentle breezes, and bright skies, the world is filled with a relaxing, healing vibe. Without a doubt, this is the best time to visit Ushguli, Georgia. September 23, 2026. The sky is clear for miles, and sunlight spills wantonly over the Caucasus mountains. The crystal-clear blue sky, unstained by a speck of dust, looks like a canvas carefully colored by nature, gently wrapping around this hidden pure land. At 8:45 AM, I set off by jeep from the quiet and quaint town of Mestia, traveling along the winding mountain road toward Ushguli, the highest inhabited settlement in Europe. After a journey through the wilderness, I arrived as scheduled at 10:00 AM in this land that Georgians revere as the "sun and moon in their hearts." Ushguli is nestled in the heart of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, backed by Mount Shkhara, the highest peak in Georgia at 5,193 meters. Its altitude of over 2,000 meters isolates it from the hustle and bustle of the world, preserving a purity and simplicity that has remained unchanged for a thousand years. It is the brightest pearl in the Upper Svaneti World Heritage site. With my small bag on my back, I immediately stepped into the snow-capped valley to begin a two-hour wilderness hike. Recent autumn rains had left shallow puddles on the mountain trails, but instead of being muddy and messy, they added a touch of lively, rustic charm to the hike, with something new at every step. The Caucasus forests had quietly changed their attire for autumn, with trees of varying shades turning yellow one after another. The layers of forest were dyed in color, with warm autumn hues overlapping the green base, creating a deeply healing autumn scroll. Clear mountain springs gurgled down the valley, the water deep and blue, the tinkling sound lingering in my ears—the most beautiful natural movement of the forest. As far as the eye could see, the world was transparent and cloudless. The excellent visibility made the distant, majestic Mount Shkhara clearly visible, its snow-capped peaks standing tall in the air, grand and magnificent, contrasting with the colorful forests and streams nearby. The fresh, crisp mountain air carried the fragrance of grass, trees, and earth. Taking a deep breath, I felt refreshed, washing away all my fatigue. On the vast alpine meadows, cattle, sheep, and horses strolled leisurely, grazing with their heads down, relaxed and unbothered by tourists. Majestic snow-capped mountains, gurgling streams, vibrant colorful forests, and leisurely creatures—the grandeur and gentleness of the wilderness blend perfectly here. Every step forward is a poetic encounter with nature. As a hidden realm whose name in Georgian means "fearless heart," this land possesses both the majestic character of the high mountains and the gentle warmth of natural life, living up to its thousand-year reputation. At noon, the sunlight became even warmer. At 12:10 PM, I strolled into the ancient village of Ushguli, entered a local home, and tasted authentic Georgian delicacies. The taste of daily life, the flavor of the wilderness—with one bite, I understood the simple warmth of this land. After the meal, I wandered through the alleys of the ancient village, as if traveling back a thousand years. Unlike any other scenery in the world, the Svan towers scattered here are a unique treasure. Medieval stone towers stand against the mountains, simple, heavy, and well-arranged. Having weathered a thousand years of wind and snow, they still stand proudly. These stone towers, built between the 6th–12th centuries, were once fortresses for the Svan people to defend against enemies and protect their homes. The mottled stone patterns are engraved with the vicissitudes of time, embodying the ancient civilization unique to the Caucasus. Thousand-year-old stone towers, quaint village houses, leisurely autumn forests, rolling meadows, herds of cattle and sheep, and majestic snow-capped mountains—all these beautiful scenes intertwine to outline a picture of an otherworldly paradise. Once sealed off by ice and snow for years and isolated from the world, the long period of closure has preserved the original appearance and cultural heritage of the Middle Ages. In September, Ushguli has no crowds, only the breeze, snow-capped mountains, colorful forests, and the ancient village. Half is the magnificent natural scenery of snow-capped mountains, and half is the cultural charm accumulated over a thousand years. Hidden on the roof of the Caucasus, this secret realm is pure, distant, gentle, and majestic. It hides the most healing autumn scenery in the world and the most moving gentleness of time. If you want to encounter the purest autumn colors on earth and head to a distant wilderness that heals the soul, Ushguli, Georgia, is the ultimate destination you must visit in this lifetime.

#adventuretrips Feeling truly like i’m living in fairytale in the shadow of Mount Ushba, watching horses graze peacefully against a backdrop of serrated, snow-dusted peaks, you realize quickly that Upper Svaneti feels untouched by time. The air up here is razor-sharp and sweet, carrying the faint scent of wild alpine blossoms and pine. As I stepped onto the trails of this remote region, framed by centuries-old stone Svan defense towers that once protected medieval families from invaders, I knew this trip would completely redefine what adventure meant to me. Every path winds through breathtaking terrain, from lush, sweeping river valleys to high mountain passes like Chkhunderi. Crossing glacial streams on horseback and hiking beneath the towering summit of Mount Tetnuldi felt less like a modern holiday and more like stepping straight into a living mountain legend. The sheer variety of experiences here keeps your adrenaline running while grounding you in rich local culture. The quintessential adventure is the iconic multi-day trek from Mestia to Ushguli, leading you through remote hamlets like Zhabeshi and Adishi. Along the route, you can go horseback riding through high alpine pastures, brave unbridged glacial river crossings, or hike up to the mirror-like Koruldi Lakes. During winter, the slopes transform into world-class, off-piste ski grounds. For something truly unique, you can step inside ancient family watchtowers or visit local ethnographic museums to uncover the deep history of the Svan people. Living this mountain dream is surprisingly affordable, making the journey as accessible as it is unforgettable. A cozy local guesthouse with warm, home-cooked breakfasts and feast-style dinners typically runs between 70 to 120 Georgian Lari per person per night, which is roughly 25 to 45 US dollars. My top local tip is to skip heavy camping gear and embrace staying in family-run homestays along the trail. You get to sleep comfortably under thick wool blankets and refuel on incredible home-cooked meals like Kubdari, a delicious Svan meat-filled flatbread spiced with local wild herbs, paired with fresh Sulguni cheese. Make sure to tackle the Adishi river crossing early in the morning when the glacial melt levels are at their lowest, carry enough cash since ATMs disappear outside of Mestia, and always take time to toast with your hosts over a glass of local Georgian wine. This is a sign to pack your bags and have some Caucasus adventure of a lifetime! #Georgia #Svaneti #ExploreGeorgia #CaucasusMountains #TrekkingAdventure #Ushguli #Mestia #MountainLovers #TravelGram #OffTheBeatenPath

#easytravelpost Ushguli sits at 2,100–2,200 m in Upper Svaneti, four hamlets (Chazhashi, Zhibiani, Murkmeli, Leshkurashi) with ~30 medieval towers and Mount Shkhara (5,193 m) filling the head of the Enguri valley — often called the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe. I flew Tbilisi→Mestia on Vanilla Sky (GEL 90, 30 min, weather-permitting — mine slipped a day, build buffer), based in Mestia 3 nights, took a shared 4×4 to Ushguli (GEL 50/person one-way, 1.5–2 hrs, depart Mestia 09:00), and slept 2 nights at a Zhibiani guesthouse (full board GEL 90/person, generator power, no ATM — carry GEL 400 small notes from Mestia). The mossy half isn't the Shkhara glacier trail (14–16 km RT, 5–7 hrs, Racomitrium on the moraine yes but crowded by noon) — it's the north wall of the Lamaria church tower in Chazhashi at 07:30, where meltwater seeps from the slate and Hypnum pads the 9th-c. stone 2 cm thick, fog off Shkhara till 8, a cowbell from the lower meadow. The tower interiors (GEL 5–10 to enter with a family key) have moss on the window jambs too. Mistake: I did Ushguli as a day-trip from Mestia — 3 hrs driving for 90 min in the village, saw Chazhashi at 11 a.m. glare, missed the 07:30 tower moss. Sleep in Zhibiani. Second: I handed the 4×4 driver a GEL 100 note for the GEL 50 fare — no change, lost GEL 50. Carry 10/20 notes. Third: I wore trail runners on the Shkhara trail in June — snow-bridge slush at 2,800 m, slipped, rented rubber boots in Mestia for GEL 15. Buy in Mestia: a GEL 4.50 kubdari, not the GEL 28 Ushguli guesthouse dinner (which is good, but eat lunch in Mestia). Gear: 2.5 L water, GEL 90 boots, GEL 40 shell — 2,200 m, 6°C dawn. Local rule: no entry ticket to Ushguli, tower-entry GEL 5–10 cash to family, 4×4 only Mestia–Ushguli (road paved 2024 but still 4×4-recommended), Vanilla Sky card-booked but cash in Mestia, the Chazhashi tower moss is 1,000 yrs of seep not a footrest. Opinion: Ushguli sells the Shkhara glacier; the mossy Lamaria tower wall in Chazhashi at 07:30 is the 10-min half with zero glacier-trail crowd, and sleeping in Zhibiani (GEL 90 board) beats any Mestia day-trip. Would you pay GEL 50 + a night in a generator-powered tower-village just for moss on a 9th-century church wall?

#easytravelpost Ushguli sits at 2,100–2,200 m in Upper Svaneti, often called the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe, a UNESCO cluster of four hamlets (Chazhashi, Zhibiani, Murkmeli, Leshkurashi) with ~30 medieval defensive towers and Mount Shkhara (5,193 m, Georgia's highest peak) filling the head of the Enguri valley. I flew Tbilisi→Mestia on Vanilla Sky (GEL 90, 30 min, weather-permitting—mine slipped a day, build buffer), based in Mestia 3 nights, took a shared 4×4 to Ushguli (GEL 50/person one-way, 1.5–2 hrs on the mostly-paved-but-still-gravel-in-places road, depart Mestia 09:00), and slept 2 nights at a Zhibiani guesthouse (full board GEL 90/person, generator power, no ATM—carry GEL 400 small notes from Mestia). The cliff moss is the tower-base seep and the Shkhara valley wall: Hylocomium and Sphagnum in the drain where the Enguri meltwaters the tower foundations, Fissidens on the schist blocks of the Lamaria Church (9th-c, free entry, dress covered shoulders/knees) overlook wall, and the cliff above the glacier tongue (2,390 m, 5–6 hr RT walk / 2–3 hr with 4×4 partway) has Racomitrium on the wind face—Svaneti moss is subalpine silver-green, glowing at 06:40 before the afternoon thunder builds. I left the guesthouse at 06:30, walked the 14–16 km valley floor to the glacier front, sat on a schist block at 07:10, the moss frost-edged, a lammergeier over the ice, Shkhara's south wall 2,800 m above. Stay 100 m back from the calving front—rockfall is constant, I watched a fridge-sized block peel off at 08:00. Mistake: I did Ushguli as a day trip first—left Mestia 09:00, got 40 min at the towers, never reached the glacier calmly. Two nights minimum; the 16:00 jeep exodus leaves the towers in silence worth the basic bed. Another: I paid the Mestia guesthouse by card and the Ushguli one wanted cash only—no card reader past Mestia, GEL 400 in 10/20 notes for coffee, museum (GEL 5), horse-to-glacier (GEL 100). Would you sleep 2 nights in Ushguli for the tower-moss dawn at 06:40 and a calm Shkhara walk, or blast it as a 4×4 day trip and trade the silence for time saved?

#easytravelpost Okatse is the most engineered nature stop in western Georgia, and I mean that as a compliment. From Kutaisi I took a marshrutka to Zeda Gordi (7 GEL), then a shared taxi to the Okatse visitor centre (20 GEL/car split). Entry is 17 GEL, plus a 3-km forest road walk (or 5 GEL shuttle) to the canyon rim. The highlight is a 780-m metal walkway bolted to the cliff with a glass viewing platform over the Okatse River 100 m below. Ushguli’s tower lanes are real: stone defensive towers from the 9th–12th century leaning over cow paths, with Mount Shkhara (5,193 m) filling the southern skyline. From the last houses I walked the 5 km track toward the glacier tongue along the Enguri River—about 1h up, 45 min back, almost flat but muddy in July. At the moraine the ice wall was 200 m of grey-blue seracs with a wind that dropped the felt temp 10°C. I wore trail runners and regretted it; the meadow sections are boggy. Guesthouse in Mestia was 90 GEL with dinner and breakfast; in Ushguli a cafe charged 25 GEL for lobio and bread. No ATM past Mestia—carry GEL cash. Mistake: I left Mestia at 9:30 once and the return jeep hit a washed-out section near Zhabeshi, adding 40 minutes. Start by 8. Another: I wore a cotton tee under a puffy—sweat on the glacier walk chilled me on the drive back. Would you sleep in Ushguli for sunrise on Shkhara, or do it as a long day from Mestia?

#easytravelpost I based myself in Mestia for four nights and did Ushguli as a day 4WD run plus a Shkhara walk. The Mestia–Ushguli road is 45–60 km of gravel, river crossings, and switchbacks; a normal car will not make it after rain. I booked a 4WD through my guesthouse for 180 GEL one way, shared with three others, leaving at 8 a.m. and reaching Ushguli (2,100 m, Europe’s highest inhabited village) in 1h50. Entry to the village is free, Lamaria Church asks a 5–10 GEL donation, the Chazhashi museum is 10 GEL. Ushguli is a lane of slate roofs and 30-odd medieval defensive towers with Mount Shkhara (5,193 m) filling the back of the valley. From the last houses a flat-ish trail runs 5 km to the glacier tongue along the Enguri River, about 1h–1h15 one way. I walked it at 11 a.m., sun on the ice, 3°C colder than the village even in July—glad I packed a wind shell and 2.5 L water. Summer pastures had yaks and Svan herders’ huts; the meadow smell was thyme and cow dung. Mistake: I trusted a blog saying “shared jeep 60 GEL round trip from Mestia”—that price is gone; 150–200 GEL is the vehicle rate, split 4 ways it’s fair, but confirm before boarding. Another: I wore trail runners and the Enguri side was muddy after a storm. Would you sleep in Ushguli for sunrise on the towers, or day-trip from Mestia and keep the comforts of a Mestia guesthouse?

An Ancient Church at the Peak of a World Heritage Site: Lamaria Church (Ushguli) Review 🇬🇪✨ Perched on the highest hill in the village of Ushguli, Lamaria Church (the Church of the Virgin Mary) is a sacred 10th-century stone church that serves as the spiritual heart of the Svan people. It stands out with its surrounding defensive stone towers, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak. Fortress Architecture: The church is enclosed by stone walls and traditional Svan Towers, which were originally used as ambush and defense points in ancient times. Getting There: From Ushguli village, you can enjoy an easy trek up the hill to the church. The distance is only about 1 km.

· Upper Svaneti (Zemo Svaneti), a hidden gem in the Caucasus Mountains. Snow-capped mountains piercing the clouds, rushing rivers, majestic and beautiful valleys, flower-filled forests and green meadows, medieval stone villages, and towering ancient Svan towers (stone defensive towers), known as Koshki, tell the unique and untamed story of "the Svans." It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and a world-renowned trekking destination. Here's a practical guide based on my experience! · Three-day, two-night itinerary: Mestia – Zhabeshi – Adishi – Iprali, then take a car to Ushguli. Roads connect the villages, so the difficulty is up to you. I saw experienced trekkers, carrying dozens of kilograms of gear, moving with ease. For ordinary people like us, large luggage can be transported by vehicle, and we can go hut to hut, only needing to carry some food and drinks on the way. · Mestia, the gateway to Upper Svaneti, is a one-day drive from Tbilisi and about 5 hours from Kutaisi. It's the starting point for treks, with all necessary amenities for food, lodging, and supplies. You'll pass through Zugdidi, the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region. The Dadiani princely family, who once ruled Western Georgia for centuries, resided here. The Gothic palace and English garden built in the 19th century are a great place to rest along the way. There are also flights operated by "Vanilla Air," but it's said you need to grab tickets on their official website a month in advance. 📍June 22, Day 1: Mestia to Zhabeshi. The weather was clear and sunny, with a pleasant breeze and comfortable temperatures. We departed at 8:27 AM and arrived at the guesthouse around 2:30 PM. My Gudong app recorded 14.58 km, taking 5:53:44, with a cumulative ascent of 622 meters. The path was not difficult, only requiring physical exertion. There were various places to take breaks along the way. There are supply points in the mountains selling coffee, beer, water, and some snacks, and small coffee shops in the villages. The scenery was delightful, with wildflowers in full bloom. The mountain villages are mostly located on both sides of the river valley, with the defensive Svan towers (Koshki) being the most striking feature. 📍June 23, Day 2: Zhabeshi to Adishi. Another clear day. My Gudong app recorded 11.49 km, taking 6:30:29, with an ascent of 902 meters, all within the first 4 km, which was quite physically demanding. The scenery remained beautiful, with snow-capped mountains ever-present, overlooking the river valley, displaying diverse colors and forms from different angles. The forests were lush, the water and grass abundant, and the vegetation rich and varied. Alpine meadows, mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, and tender large-leaf flowers beneath the trees created a vibrant, refreshing green that was very pleasing to the eye. I loved the rhododendrons the most, with three types: yellow below 2,000 meters, and two types of white above, forming the most elegant "lace" for the jungle and mountains. From Zhabeshi, ascend the mountain and cross the meadow. Do not follow the official signpost; turn left, and you will see a white circular signpost that says "Cafe TETNULDI Adishi." Follow the zigzagging path upwards for about 3.5 km, climbing from 1,700 meters to 2,300 meters, passing through rhododendron thickets, meadows, and streams. After exiting the pine forest, you'll find a small shop by the cable car platform, the only supply point along the way. 📍June 24, Day 3: The group split into two, concluding the trip perfectly. The brave ones continued forward, challenging the snowline and glaciers. Unburdened, they performed at their best on what is said to be the most difficult section! They departed at 8:00 AM, covered 17 km, and only took 6 hours and 6 minutes, arriving at a small coffee shop just after 2:00 PM, right as a thunderstorm raged outside! Quietly ordering a beer and waiting for the car to pick them up, that sense of immediate, stable happiness resonated within them. The women's group traveled by car to Ushguli. The bumpy, muddy, and rocky road, winding up and down along the Adishichala River canyon, tossed everyone around! For over 10 km, with two mountains sandwiching a narrow gorge, the roaring sound of the water, accompanied by the rough engine noise of the car, surprisingly evoked a sense of "remote tranquility." Adishi village truly feels "isolated from the world." · Ushguli, the highest continuously inhabited village in Europe, with its Svan towers and dwellings, preserves the medieval Caucasian style and is the core of the Upper Svaneti World Heritage site. The village winds uphill along the river valley, with lush green mountains on both sides. The Svan towers stand tall, ancient and weathered. On the highest hill is a 12th-century church. Behind it, Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak, approaches with immense grandeur. Nature and time together compose a beautiful picture!

#underratedspots Many travelers visit Georgia for Tbilisi or Kazbegi, but the place that impressed me the most was Mestia. Hidden deep in the Caucasus Mountains, this small town feels like a world of its own, where centuries-old stone towers stand against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks. The first thing you'll notice is the unique Svan towers rising above the rooftops. Built hundreds of years ago to protect local families, these defensive towers have become the symbol of Svaneti and give Mestia a character unlike anywhere else in the country. Walking through the quiet streets, I felt as if I had stepped into a living museum rather than a typical tourist destination. Mestia is also the perfect base for exploring some of Georgia's most spectacular landscapes. Whether you're hiking to the Chalaadi Glacier, taking the cable car to Hatsvali, or simply enjoying the mountain scenery from a café, every direction offers incredible views. If you have more time, don't miss the famous hike to Ushguli, one of Europe's highest permanently inhabited villages. I recommend spending at least two or three nights here instead of treating Mestia as a quick stop. The atmosphere changes completely throughout the day, especially in the early morning when the peaks glow in the first sunlight and the streets are almost empty. Even if you're not an experienced hiker, there's plenty to discover without venturing far from town. Georgia has no shortage of beautiful destinations, but Mestia felt truly special. Between its medieval towers, dramatic mountain scenery, and unique Svan culture, it's one of those places that stays with you long after the journey ends. #HiddenSpots #Mestia #Georgia #Svaneti #Caucasus #Travel #HiddenGem #TravelPhotography

While most glacier treks in the Caucasus Mountains require intense scrambles and heavy climbing gear, the hike to the Shkhara Glacier is a rare exception. Starting from the remote, stone-tower village of Ushguli, this day hike follows a mostly flat river valley straight to the base of Mount Shkhara—Georgia’s highest peak, towering at 5,193 meters. It is a straightforward, open-air journey that relies more on stamina than technical skill, trading steep climbs for massive, uninterrupted mountain views. The Valley Floor: Leaving the medieval hamlets of Ushguli behind, the trail begins by passing the historic Lamaria Church. From there, you follow a wide, dirt jeep track that tracks the bubbling Enguri River upstream. The path is incredibly gentle, cutting through massive alpine meadows filled with wildflowers and grazing horses. Because the valley is wide and open, the massive, icy wall of Shkhara stays right in front of you the entire time. The Riverside Cafe: About six kilometers into the trek, the flat gravel road reaches a small, rustic seasonal cafe on the riverbank. This is where any vehicle traffic completely stops. It’s a great spot to grab a drink and take a break before the terrain changes for the final push. The Moraine Scramble: For the last two kilometers, the smooth track disappears. The trail becomes a narrow, rocky footpath that weaves through low-lying brush, overgrown fields, and patches of grey moraine rock. You will cross a few small, shallow streams fed by the melting ice above. As you approach the massive wall of ice, the temperature drops instantly, replacing the valley breeze with a cold, glacial draft. The trail ends right at the massive, rocky snout of the glacier where the Enguri River violently bursts out from beneath the ice. Standing at the base, the sheer scale of the Bezengi Wall—the massive ridge of ice and rock connecting the surrounding peaks—is completely overwhelming. #travel #mountainviews #mountains #travel2026 #georgia #ushguli #mestia #glacier

If you follow the rugged dirt track from Mestia to its absolute end, you reach Ushguli. Tucked deep into a high mountain trench at over 2,100 meters, this remote community is widely considered one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. It is a place where modern time seems to have stalled entirely, trapped behind a ring of giant peaks and the massive, icy wall of Mount Shkhara—Georgia’s highest mountain. Ushguli isn't actually a single village, but a tight cluster of four small medieval hamlets stringed along the rushing Enguri River. Because it was completely cut off by heavy snow for six months out of every year, the community preserved its ancient way of life with a stark, raw purity that you can’t find anywhere else in the Caucasus. The village landscape is a dense, chaotic maze of crumbling stone homes and dozens of perfectly preserved 12th-century Svan towers. Walking through the narrow, muddy lanes feels like stepping into a medieval fortress. Pigs, horses, and heavy-coated Caucasian sheepdogs wander between the dark stone structures, while the sheer, white snowfields of Shkhara tower directly over the rooftops like a frozen tidal wave. For travelers who make the journey, Ushguli offers a handful of unforgettable experiences: The Shkhara Glacier Trek: A relatively flat, spectacular day hike or horse ride that follows the river valley straight to the crumbling, icy snout of the Shkhara Glacier. Lamaria Church: A tiny, isolated 12th-century stone church perched on a lone hill overlooking the village, filled with fading medieval frescoes and surrounded by ancient stone walls. The High Skyline Trails: Steep, unmarked paths that scramble up the ridges flanking the valley, offering dizzying, panoramic views of the entire stone settlement below and the jagged peaks stretching toward the Russian border. Ushguli is not a manicured tourist spot; it is a rugged, beautiful, and sometimes harsh living museum of highland survival at the very edge of the habitable world. #georgia #mazeri #mestia #naturalwonders #ushguli #travel2026 #travel #thingstodo #mountains #mountainviews

🛑 Here is the true story of getting ripped off by a private car in Ushguli: I thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but I just met an Oscar-worthy actor! 💸🎭 Besties, who else gets this emotional rollercoaster of going from hell to heaven and straight back to hell? 😭 Visiting Georgia in April, I didn't just see the sights—I witnessed a masterclass in human manipulation! 🏠 The Guesthouse Owner's "Sincere" Good Deal? Staying in Mestia, my guesthouse owner put on a super earnest face to help me contact a driver, quoting 250 GEL right off the bat! He even told me earnestly, "This is already a super low price (Good Deal) given purely as a favor to me!" I was almost moved to tears at the time, thinking the owner was a true lifesaver for travelers! 🤝✨ 🌈 Finding Love Around the Corner? The Ray of Hope at 70 GEL! Plot twist! The moment I walked out, I bumped into someone hustling for a shared ride on the street, asking for only 70 GEL per person! I was absolutely thrilled, feeling blessed by the luck gods. I immediately canceled the owner's car, ready to embrace the joy of saving money! 🏃♂️💨 🎬 The Driver Goes Full Hollywood, and My Smile Fades... Who knew this was just the beginning of a nightmare! Right before departure, the driver suddenly flipped the script, claiming the other booked passengers had flaked and ghosted him. Since we couldn't carpool anymore, we had to charter the whole car! He demanded 200 GEL upfront! After haggling for my life, we finally settled at 180 GEL... Traveling here in the April off-season, you might dodge the guesthouse owner, but you can't escape the street-side Oscar winners! 💔💸 ⚠️ Attention, folks planning a self-drive road trip (Life-saving tips ahead): Make sure you scrutinize the insurance terms before renting a car, because the logic here is totally whack (a total trap): 1. The Hellish Stretch from Jvari to Mestia: The road from Jvari to Mestia is the true "chassis killer." The surface is so wrecked it looks like a tank drove over it! The kicker is: rental car companies usually allow you to drive this route, but with the road in such terrible condition, if you break down, you're absolutely screwed! 🌳 2. The "Insurance No-Go Zone" of Ushguli: Even though the road to Ushguli is actually slightly better than the Jvari stretch, most rental agencies strictly mandate: "No self-driving to Ushguli!" The second you go, your insurance is automatically voided. If you get a flat tire or scrape the chassis, you're on the hook to pay full price out of pocket! ❌🛡️ 3. The Cost of the Off-Season: Visiting in April means a lot of shared rides are just "random traps." If you don't want to be an absolute chump paying a premium for a ride like I did, keep your wits about you before setting off! Even though my wallet is bleeding, the desolate beauty of Ushguli in April, with its mix of ice and snow, is truly irreplaceable. I'll just treat it as spending 180 GEL for an immersive Caucasian theater performance! 🎭🏔️ 🇬🇪💔🚗🏔️

The Bridge of Peace, or Mshvidobis Khidi, is a bridge crossing the Kura River, connecting the old and new parts of Tbilisi. The main structure of the bridge is made of steel and glass, and it is approximately 150 meters long. It's a place with good air, great views, and refreshing activities. #TheBridgeofPeace #Georgia

Ushguli consists of four small villages scattered in the upper valley of the Enguri River. It preserves the unique medieval Svanetian architectural style: thick stone houses built with stone slabs, with roofs weighted down by large stones to withstand wind and snow. Almost every household is equipped with tall defensive towers, which were once used to shelter from invaders and avalanches, and now have become symbols of Svanetian culture. Walking through the narrow stone alleys, you can almost hear the echoes of history—the Huns and Mongols once swept through the Caucasus, but the Svans relied on these towers to protect their independence and faith for a thousand years. At the end of the village, a hiking trail leads to the Shkhara Glacier. Strolling through meadows filled with wildflowers, herders ride horses driving cattle leisurely by. Looking up, you see Mount Shkhara, standing at 5,068 meters, the highest peak in Georgia, with the glacier seemingly within reach. If you have enough stamina, you can hike to the glacier front (about 3-4 hours round trip) to experience the icy breath of the Ice Age.

Lunch might be a fresh kubdari — a traditional meat pie packed with spices. And in the evening, you sip mountain tea on the veranda, surrounded by silence and sky. It’s the kind of deep reset you didn’t know you needed. 📍 How to get there: The closest major city is Kutaisi, from which it takes about 5–6 hours to reach Mestia, the heart of Svaneti. #summervacay Ushguli is wild, in the best way. It’s this super remote village way up in the mountains of Svaneti, and getting there is already an adventure (bumpy road but so worth it). Once you arrive, it’s like stepping back centuries. Stone towers, cobbled paths, and that dramatic backdrop of Mount Shkhara staring you down, it’s unreal. The village is tiny and super rustic, but that’s part of the charm. Cows wander the streets, locals go about their day, and the pace is slow in the best possible way. You can hike around or just take it easy and soak in the views. Everything’s surrounded by snowy peaks and green hills, it’s like a live postcard. Don’t expect luxury here, it’s raw and real, and that’s what makes it awesome. Plus, the silence? Crazy peaceful. If you want to feel small (in a good way) and totally off the grid, Ushguli is it. Just you, the towers, and the mountains. Total magic.
