Xinzhou Longquan Temple|With holy spring and stone carvings.
|With holy spring and stone carvings. Longquan Temple was first built in the Song Dynasty and was originally the family temple of the Yang family. It was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty and expanded over 14 years during the Republic of China, creating the luxurious and huge Longquan Temple. The stone archway is located at the front of the temple, with a temple on a stone, and the layout is very clever.
The most impressive part of the entire temple is the stone carvings of Longquan Temple. The carvings include dignified Buddha statues, vivid birds and beasts, lush flowers, numerous rare fruits, various stone lions, and 89 coiled dragons. The various patterns are meticulously carved, and the exquisite craftsmanship is breathtaking. It is more exquisite than the stone carvings of the Forbidden City in Beijing, and it is rare in China.
Next to Longquan Temple is a spring named "Longquan". According to legend, there were nine dragons doing evil in the past. Manjushri Bodhisattva pressed them under the mountain. The clear water bottom can see the shadows of nine small dragons, hence the name of the temple.

A journey to the past - Longquan Temple, Mount Wutai.
Longquan Temple, built in the Song Dynasty, is located at the foot of Zhongtai Mountain, Mount Wutai, Shanxi. It is named after a spring next to the temple called Longquan. The temple was originally the family temple of the Yang family. Although it is not large in scale and is not the oldest temple in Mount Wutai, it is well-known in the scenic area. This is mainly because the temple is full of exquisite brick carvings and stone carvings, making it the most beautiful temple in Mount Wutai. The temple faces south and covers an area of 15,950 square meters. The existing buildings include a plaque, a shadow wall, steps, and three courtyards. The stone plaque on the 108 steps is carved from pure Han white jade, and the three doors and six pillars are covered with various patterns such as flying dragons, flower beams, paper fans, and treasure mirrors. The overall appearance is majestic and spectacular, exquisite and transparent, and it is a rare treasure of modern carving art.
The exquisite and spectacular stone plaque in front of the gate of Longquan Temple is the most famous stone carving plaque among the cultural relics of Mount Wutai. The three rooms and four pillars and three floors are in a wooden structure. The brackets, rafters, flying children, tiles, drips, etc. are all exquisitely carved, forming a "一" shape. The overall appearance is majestic and spectacular, and it is ingeniously crafted. There are 89 Jiaolong carved on the plaque, with scales and claws, and lifelike expressions. The back of the stone plaque is equipped with a large stone lion, with stone flagpoles on both sides, and a stone arch behind, all in Han white jade. The stone plaque is exquisitely carved and is a treasure of stone carving architecture. The various patterns on the plaque are not only exquisite, but also meticulously carved. The stamens and grass leaves are as thin as hair and as thin as gauze; the beasts and birds are vivid and vivid; the expressions of the characters are lifelike. The knife work is so fine that it is as thin as a hair and as thin as a cicada's wings. It really feels like "open your mouth and fear the bird, stretch out your hand and fear the branch". It is a rare art treasure.

Nanshan Temple in Xinzhou: A high-altitude ancient temple in Wutai Mountain with a strong atmosphere of cultivation and alchemy!
Nanshan Temple in Xinzhou is located in the scenic area of Wutai Mountain and is one of the highest ancient temples in the scenic area. It was built in the Yuan Dynasty and expanded during the Republic of China period. It merged Youguo Temple, Jile Temple, and Shandetang into Nanshan Temple. The whole temple is built on the mountain and has more than 300 houses, covering an area of 37,175 square meters. Due to the high altitude, the temple at the top is very artistic, just like the magical place of cultivation and alchemy in the mythological TV series. You can overlook the entire Wutai Mountain scenery from the top, which is very shocking. Therefore, you must come to Nanshan Temple when you come to Wutai Mountain. You can appreciate the beautiful natural scenery and profound architectural art of Wutai Mountain. Now I will summarize and share some simple strategies for visiting Nanshan Temple.
1. Ticket information: You can visit Nanshan Temple for free by purchasing a ticket to Wutai Mountain Scenic Area, and the temple no longer charges a separate ticket.
2. Opening hours: Normally open from 8:00 to 18:00 every day. In case of bad weather, major holidays or temple fairs, the opening hours will be adjusted.
3. Visit time: Normally, it takes 2 hours to visit, but if you like architectural art or photography, it is recommended to arrange 1-2 hours more to visit slowly.
4. Play season: Wutai Mountain enjoys the reputation of the cool mountain in North China, so midsummer is the best season to play, and the altitude of Nanshan Temple is higher and the temperature is lower. Even in the hot summer, you need to wear autumn clothes to play normally, otherwise you will catch a cold.
5. Transportation: According to actual experience, it is more convenient to drive by yourself. If you really can't arrange a self-driving tour, you can take the tourist bus line at Taihuai Town to the Wutai Mountain North Gate Visitor Center and walk 500 meters to reach it, or you can take a taxi from Taihuai Town or Wutai Mountain Station.
6. Food and accommodation: There are no accommodation and restaurants in the scenic area. You can arrange to stay in Taihuai Town. In the non-peak tourist season, the accommodation price is about 160 yuan, and the food consumption is not high. Consumption of 40-50 yuan is more common.
Foguang Temple, Xinzhou | Tang Dynasty Heritage
|Tang Dynasty Heritage. Foguang Temple is located in the Foguang Mountain in the northeast of Doucun Town, 32 kilometers northeast of Wutai County, Shanxi Province (at the foot of the South Wutai Mountain). It was first built during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (471-499). In the 11th year of Dazhong of the Tang Dynasty (857), it was rebuilt.
In 1937, Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin and others conducted surveying and mapping work at Doucun Foguang Temple outside Shanxi Province, and discovered precious relics such as Tang Dynasty buildings, colored sculptures and murals. Among them, the East Hall is considered to be built in the Tang Dynasty, and the hall still preserves Tang Dynasty colored sculptures and murals, known as the "Asian Buddha Light". This discovery broke the assertion of Japanese scholars that there are no Tang Dynasty wooden structures in China.

Buddha's Light: China's Magical Light
When sunlight pierces through the clouds and shines on the mountains and rivers, a mysterious and dazzling natural wonder, Buddha's Light, quietly emerges. China's Buddha's Light tourist attractions, with their ethereal and dreamy qualities, attract countless hearts in pursuit of magic and beauty.
The characteristics of Buddha's Light lie in its mystery and ethereal fantasy. It often appears under specific conditions, like a sudden flash of light in a fairyland, giving people a surprise and shock. The colorful halo surrounds the figure, like a sacred crown, and like a blessing of auspiciousness. The colors of Buddha's Light are colorful and changeable, with distinct layers, as if it is a divine painting drawn by nature with the most delicate strokes.
Its cause comes from complex optical phenomena. When sunlight shines on the surface of clouds and fog, after diffraction and reflection, the human shadow is projected into the halo, forming this wonderful Buddha's Light. "The mountains are full of beauty, and the water is full of clouds", which vividly depicts the dreamlike atmosphere when Buddha's Light appears.
As a Buddhist holy land, the appearance of Buddha's Light in Wutai Mountain has a more sacred meaning. The temples are scattered, the bells are melodious, and when the sunlight penetrates the lingering incense, Buddha's Light quietly descends in this solemn and solemn atmosphere. The dazzling halo seems to be the light of compassion shed by the Buddha, warm and peaceful, enveloping every devout believer. "The ancient temple is outside the green mountain, and the Zen room is deep in the flowers and trees." In this deep and quiet environment, the appearance of Buddha's Light adds a transcendent and refined atmosphere. The believers put their hands together and pray silently in the Buddha's Light. The soul seems to have received the purest baptism. At this moment, time seems to stand still, the hustle and bustle of the world are left behind, only the sacred Buddha's Light and inner peace.
The Buddha's Light of Mount Tai shows its majesty and majesty. It stands on the land of Qilu, carrying the heaviness and precipitation of the ancient times. When Buddha's Light comes, the majestic mountain body is even more solemn and solemn under the light. The peaks and mountains are undulating, the clouds and mists are ethereal, and Buddha's Light is like an auspicious sign from the sky, putting a mysterious veil on Mount Tai. Standing on the top of Mount Tai, bathing in the Buddha's Light, you can truly appreciate the majestic momentum of the mountains and rivers.
The Buddha's Light of Huashan adds a touch of magic to its danger. Huashan is famous for its steep cliffs and deep valleys. When Buddha's Light flashes here, it is like a mysterious light from the sky. The peaks are steep, the strange rocks are rugged, and Buddha's Light seems to be a brilliant pearl specially decorated for it by nature. "Only the sky is on, and there is no mountain to match", under the reflection of this Buddha's Light, the danger of Huashan is more unique. The light seems to be telling the tenacity and unyielding of Huashan, and also makes people full of deeper respect and yearning for this famous mountain after marveling.
In Emei Mountain, Sichuan, Buddha's Light often appears on the Golden Dome. Standing on the top of the mountain, the sea of clouds is surging, the sun is piercing the clouds, and Buddha's Light is looming. When the mysterious halo surrounds your figure, it seems to be in the fairyland of the Buddha country. "Shu has many fairy mountains, and Emei is hard to match", this famous mountain full of fairy spirits is more sacred and solemn because of the blessing of Buddha's Light.
The Buddha's Light of Huangshan is also amazing. Among the strange peaks and rocks, the clouds and mists are lingering, and Buddha's Light flashes from time to time. It is like a mysterious visitor, adding a bit of mystery to this magnificent mountain and river. "Huangshan is four thousand feet, thirty-two lotus peaks. Dan Cliff is sandwiched with stone pillars, and the lotus is golden hibiscus." Encountering Buddha's Light in such a strange scene, people can't help but marvel at the ingenuity of nature.
China's Buddha's Light tourist attractions are not only the wonderful gifts of nature, but also the window of dialogue between the soul and the world. Buddha's Light, like the smile of nature, is warm and mysterious. Under the shining of Buddha's Light, people feel the magic and greatness of nature, and are full of awe and yearning for the mystery of the universe.

Explore the soul of Mount Wutai, do you know the ancient temple Xiantong Temple, known as the "second in the world"? It is not only a witness to history, but also a treasure of architectural art, which is fascinating.
Xiantong Temple, after the Eastern Han Dynasty White Horse Temple, was founded by monks in Mount Wutai, and flourished in the Northern Wei Dynasty. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was even more respected as the first of the "Five Great Zen Places", the ancestor of all temples in the mountain. Stepping into this Ming and Qing architectural complex, the seven courtyards are all beautiful. The Great Manjusri and the Great Hall of the Great Heroes are solemn and majestic, especially the Great Hall of the Great Heroes, which is a legacy of the Daoguang period, with a double eave and a hipped roof, showing the royal style. Turning the corner is the Wuliang Hall, a miracle of Ming bricks. It is named Wuliang without beams. The statue of Rushena in the hall is compassionate and peaceful. The dome is high, and the sense of space is beyond imagination. It seems to have traveled to the fantasy world carefully built by Ming craftsmen.
Entering Xiantong Temple, every brick and tile tells a story. Come to the comment area to share, which hall or Buddha statue attracts you the most? Let us feel this shock and tranquility that spans thousands of years together!
Touring ancient temples, listening to Zen sounds, understanding the mind and seeing one's true nature!
In the first year of the Dali era of Emperor Daizong of the Tang Dynasty (766 AD), Bukong Tripitaka sent his disciple Hanguang to Mount Wutai to establish the Golden Pavilion Temple. At that time, the temple was magnificent and grand in scale, with the golden pavilion in the temple reaching over a hundred feet high. It had three levels: upper, middle, and lower, with carved beams and painted rafters, towering into the clouds. The roof of the hall was "cast in copper and gilded," "illuminating the valleys." The temple was named the Golden Pavilion Temple mainly because of the "copper cast tiles and gilded soil." After the temple was completed, Bukong was honored as the founding patriarch of the Golden Pavilion Temple. The Golden Pavilion Temple later went through several destructions due to anti-Buddhist campaigns and wars, leaving only ruins. The existing temple buildings and statues are all from the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods after restoration and additions.
The entire temple faces south with its back to the north, and the temple is basically square in shape. It covers a total area of 21,000 square meters and has 169 halls and buildings. The temple is divided into front and rear courtyards. The front courtyard is centered around the Guanyin Pavilion, with eight pavilion-style halls in the middle. The rear courtyard houses the Mahavira Hall, with monks' quarters on both sides, separated by a two-story building with a door in between for access. Along the central axis are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Guanyin Hall, Pavilion Hall, and Mahavira Hall. The Golden Pavilion Temple has over 1,000 statues, making it the temple with the most Buddhist statues on Mount Wutai. The Golden Pavilion Temple is notable for its long history and numerous large statues, especially the Thousand-Hand Guanyin statue, which stands out among the many temples on Mount Wutai and attracts the attention of the world.

Traveling to the past - Nanshan Temple, Wutai Mountain (National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit).
Nanshan Temple, Wutai Mountain, is a Zen temple located between the mountains 2 kilometers south of Taihuai Town, Wutai Mountain, Shanxi Province. It was built in the second year of Yuanzhen of Yuan Chengzong (1296) and was once one of the ten green temples of Wutai Mountain, a national temple, and a royal temple garden.
Nanshan Temple was originally named Dazheng Shouguo Temple by Yuan Chengzong Tumu. Rebuilt in the 20th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1541). Expanded in the ninth year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1829), it was called Jile Temple. During the Republic of China, people such as Jiang Fuchen in the Northeast carried out reconstruction and collectively referred to it as Nanshan Temple. The existing buildings are relics from the Ming Dynasty to the Republic of China. In June 2009, it was listed as a World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape. On October 7, 2019, Nanshan Temple was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
Nanshan Temple is built on the mountain, facing east and west. There are 18 courtyards, pavilions, halls and houses, covering a total area of 37,000 square meters. The entire temple is composed of seven layers and three parts. The lower three layers are Jile Temple. In the courtyard on the left side of the temple, the Daxiong Hall is located in the center. The middle layer is Shandetang. The upper three layers are Shouguo Temple. The layout form of the traditional Chinese architecture is adopted. The main building is arranged on the axis, and the auxiliary buildings are arranged on both sides.
The main buildings and statues in Nanshan Temple were all made by Anigo, a famous architect and statue master of the Yuan Dynasty. Although they have been repaired and reinstalled many times in later generations, the content and style of the subject still maintain the basic features of the Yuan Dynasty. It is a rare physical relic for studying and understanding the royal colored statues and temple culture of the Yuan Dynasty. At the same time, the study of Nanshan Temple also has important significance for exploring the relationship between the ancient Chinese court, the emperor and Buddhism.
The sky is high and the clouds are light, listening to the wind of the northern frontier at Yanqing Temple
Yanqing Temple, an open hall, with vast and boundless mountains behind it. The weather was particularly good that day, the sky was blue as if washed, and the resting clouds bloomed quietly like white lotus flowers, making the place even more outstanding.
At noon, although the sun was intense, the weather in northern Shanxi was not as sultry as in the south. Coupled with the northern wind blowing from beyond the Great Wall, it was not tiring, and even if you sweated, it would dry quickly.
📜About Yanqing Temple
Only the main hall remains, and its age is untraceable. Based on its architectural style, it is inferred to be a wooden structure from the Jin Dynasty. The roof slope is gentle, the eaves extend freely, the eaves curve beautifully, and the thick side walls taper inward, with harmonious proportions, completely exceeding my aesthetic expectations.
If it weren't for visiting Foguang Temple, who would know of its existence? It is said that the stupa inside the hall was stolen earlier, and it stopped being open to the public. When I went, new buildings had already been constructed around it, and many students from Xi'an were sketching inside.
📝Professional Knowledge
The main hall of Yanqing Temple is three bays wide, with a nearly square floor plan. It is a wooden structure with six purlins and a hip-and-gable roof. In terms of architectural style, the techniques of the eaves, intercolumnar brackets, diagonal braces, and camel hump are similar to those of the Manjusri Hall of Foguang Temple within the same region. The long purlins and the eaves brackets shaped like elephant trunks are also similar to the techniques used in the Amitabha Hall and Guanyin Hall of Chongfu Temple.
📸Recommended Highlights
The stupa from the second year of Jingyou in the Northern Song Dynasty (1035), standing on a lotus base. The upper half of the stupa was stolen by thieves in 2011;
The beast heads on the column tops of the main hall are particularly distinctive, resembling the masks used in southern Nuo opera, identical to the beast heads seen in the main hall of Guangji Temple in Wutai County.

The best restaurant in Wutai Mountain.
The Zifu Chef at Wutai Mountain Marriott Hotel is a buffet breakfast and a weekend buffet restaurant. On weekdays, you can enjoy a la carte or set meals here, with a very high cost performance of Chinese and Western meals.
This time we came with more than a dozen people and booked a set meal here. I can say it was unexpectedly good.
Freshly baked bread, served with olive oil, black vinegar, and homemade basil sauce. Exquisite appetizers, fresh and refreshing. Small tomato and cheese salad, slightly sour, with the dense taste of cheese, instantly open the taste buds.
Pumpkin cream soup, sweet and silky, with a light cream aftertaste. The main course is pan-fried cod, fat cod belly, crispy fish skin, tender fish with asparagus and lemon juice, balanced taste.
Finally, the tiramisu, which is super high in value, is wrapped in a mousse full of milk flavor and soaked in coffee wine biscuits.
Come and have a cup of coffee, look at the scenery outside the mountain, and feel comfortable. The restaurant, from the reception to the service staff to the manager, is very polite, responsive, and very professional in introducing various attractions in Wutai Mountain.
A must-visit in Mount Wutai - Nanshan Temple.
Nanshan Temple is one of the ten temples in Mount Wutai that have been included in the World Heritage List. It is also the temple that surprised me the most on this trip. Although it is close to the bustling Yangbaiyu Village, it still maintains a rare independent state. After walking through a mountain road with flying willow catkins and surging forests, I came to the south gate of the temple~Yongjin Gate.
I was the last batch of visitors that day. As night fell, the Buddhist land with as many as seven courtyards formed by the three temples of Jile Temple, Shande Hall, and Youguo Temple, which were stacked up according to the mountain, seemed even more quiet and pure. After walking through the secluded path in Jile Temple, I came to the courtyard where the Ming Dynasty Daxiong Hall was located. I saw a Qing Dynasty inverted bowl-shaped brick pagoda sitting in the center, tall and handsome. Moving to the second-floor corridor where the halls of Pilu, Guanyin, Puxian, Wenshu, and Jade Emperor are located, the world of gods and Buddhas depicted by the exquisite colored sculptures, hanging sculptures, and murals distributed in it are also not to be missed.
Following the guide and climbing up, I looked at the unopened Shande Hall and then came to the highest Youguo Temple. This small temple is famous for its various brick carvings and stone carvings. It is a treasure trove of sculpture art. The walls, railings, steps, door lintels, and steps... almost any external structure you can think of are decorated by local craftsmen through delicate and vivid carving techniques. Its content covers historical stories, folk tales, flowers, birds, auspicious beasts, and auspicious patterns. It is amazing!
Explore ancient temples and experience their thousand-year history!
Yanqing Temple is located in Shanwen Village, Yangbai Township, Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but the stone inscriptions in the courtyard indicate that the temple already existed during the Tang Dynasty. It was rebuilt in the second year of the Jingyou era of the Song Dynasty and was renovated during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The temple was originally a three-courtyard layout, but only the third courtyard remains. The main existing building is the main hall of Yanqing Temple, a relic of the Jin Dynasty, which faces south. The main hall is three rooms wide and about 13 meters long, with a slightly square floor plan. It is a wooden structure with six rafters and a hip roof. In terms of architectural form, the methods of the head, the supplement, the oblique arch, and the camel hump are similar to those of the Wenshu Hall of the Foguang Temple in the territory. The large supporting wooden feet and the head shape of the elephant are similar to the Amitabha Hall and Guanyin Hall of the Chongfu Temple in Suxian County. The hall uses a reduced column architectural structure, which was common in the late Jin and early Ming Dynasties. It is a newly created wooden structure, that is, it saves beams and columns without affecting the stability of the building. The two column heads in the center of the main hall are decorated with animal faces, which are uniquely shaped. Some people think it looks like a dragon, while others think it looks like a pig's head. There are relics of the Northern Song Dynasty in the temple. Although some are broken, the lotus base is very exquisite. The text on it records a lot of history of Yanqing Temple and has high research value. On May 25, 2006, Yanqing Temple was listed as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Although Yanqing Temple is not large, as a wooden building of the Jin Dynasty, it has important historical, artistic, and scientific value and is a precious example of ancient architecture research.
