| A Stunning Buddhist Kingdom
Hey guys!👫 Today I have to recommend Shanxi Xiaoxitian to you!
I was shocked as soon as I entered!😱 The painted sculptures are so exquisite, each one is lifelike, as if it has a soul🧐. They are colorful yet dignified, and the details show the superb skills of the ancients👏.
The temple buildings are also full of historical charm. Here, time seems to stand still, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle and feel the peace of mind.💕 It is really a super worth checking out!
Xiaoxitian in Xixian County, Shanxi Province.
“Hidden in the mountains, unknown to the world, once known, the world is amazed.”
🔥 The Daxiong Hall of Xiaoxitian, which is only 169.6 square meters, houses nearly 2,000 hanging sculptures of Buddha. Gilded and painted, they are densely packed and stacked in layers. The largest Buddha is nearly 3 meters tall, while the smallest celestial musician is only the size of a thumb. The sculptures are intricately stacked, yet not at all cluttered. They are not only a passionate swan song in the history of Chinese sculpture art, but also an artistic sanctuary where you can experience Eastern aesthetics in person.
🔥 Look up and see the heavens, and be amazed.
I rarely use the word "stunning" to describe a place!
But this time, my trip to Shanxi to visit ancient sites truly left me in awe. The most impressive place was a Zen Buddhist temple, known as the "suspended sculpture masterpiece" in the history of Chinese sculpture art.
The temple is filled with exquisite clay sculptures. Halls, pavilions, shrines, exotic flowers and trees, rare birds and beasts... These lifelike sculptures create a magnificent scene. From Bodhisattvas to celestial musicians, every detail is imbued with unique charm, making it a breathtaking aesthetic feast.
The clay sculptures are intricately detailed, with expressions, postures, clothing, and even the surrounding environment exuding artistic flair. Each sculpture tells a story, taking us back in time to the golden age of Buddhist culture and art.

What's the charm of Xiaoxitian?
When it comes to Xiaoxitian, one has to mention the spectacle of "full hall hanging sculptures". Hanging sculptures, that is, colored sculptures hanging on the walls, originated from the Tang Dynasty. Rare treasures are mostly found in Shanxi, and Xiaoxitian is one of the masterpieces!
Why is it known as the "hanging sculpture masterpiece"?
- Huge number of Buddha statues: The main hall of only 169 square meters can accommodate nearly two thousand Buddha statues. When you step into it, the visual impact is instantly overwhelming, and the shock hits the soul.
- Vivid Buddha statues: Pursuing realism, Buddha, birds, and beasts are all lifelike. If you taste it carefully, you will find that each Buddha statue has its unique expression, and none of them are the same.
- Exquisite spatial layout: All hanging sculptures gradually shrink from bottom to top and slightly tilt. When you are in it, it seems that the surrounded gods and Buddhas use pavilions, towers, and pavilions as the stage, staring at the world, creating a wonderful feeling of being in the scene.
How to take big shots in Xiaoxitian?
- Recommended camera position: Blood handprint corridor, capture the atmosphere of "eighty-one difficulties" in the journey to the west.
- Second camera position: "The Way to the West" mountain gate, take a photo in front of the red wall of the Buddha character, and the person and the scene are perfectly integrated.
- There is a door hole: Use the door hole for frame composition, and the picture is neat and uniform.
- Inside the Daxiong Hall: The hanging sculptures are rich but easy to appear messy. Focus on a Buddha statue or use a guide line to compose the picture to capture the beauty of order.
- Group photo: Try to take a low-angle shot outside the hall, so that the hanging sculptures and people can blend harmoniously.
Best shooting time: It is recommended to go in the morning, the light is soft, easy to capture details; the interior is dark in the afternoon, not conducive to viewing.
Transportation Guide:
- Xixian is remote, it is better to drive by yourself.
- There is a special car transfer at Yuncheng North Station, from 9 am to 5 pm, suitable for a day trip.
- You can also take a high-speed train to Linfen, and then charter a direct bus to Xiaoxitian.

Xiaoxitian
Although I had read a lot of information and participated in ancient architecture training in advance, I was still shocked when I saw it on the spot. There are nearly 2,000 Buddha statues in a space of more than 100 square meters. It is hard to imagine that more than 300 years ago, countless monks and craftsmen who adhered to their original intentions created the stunning Western Paradise in the unknown mountain nest for 18 years. Such a precious ancient architectural miracle is worth seeing!

Check in at the ancient building with Black Goku~Xiaoxitian.
It was built in the 7th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1634) and was presided over by the Dongming Zen master. It covers an area of only more than 1,100 square meters. It is located in the west and faces the east. It is built on the Phoenix Mountain and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The buildings are scattered on the top of the mountain. Due to the limitation of the terrain and the implication of the Western Paradise, the main buildings are placed on the east-west axis. The temple is naturally divided into three courtyards: upper, lower, and front. There are 20 buildings of different sizes, heights, and symmetries in the limited space, and the cave is used as a door to connect the three building groups. The Ming Dynasty colored hanging sculptures in the temple are famous and are known as the Chinese Hanging Sculpture Art Museum and the "Hanging Sculpture Finale" in the history of Chinese sculpture art.

September travel recommendation: Linfen Xiaoxitian in Shanxi Province | Three Thousand Worlds.
|Three Thousand Worlds. Xiaoxitian in Xi County, Shanxi, also known as Qianfoan, is located on the top of Fenghuang Mountain, 1 km northwest of Xi County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is a Buddhist Zen monastery.
Xiaoxitian was first built in 1629 during the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty under the auspices of Master Dongming. It was repaired many times during the Qing Dynasty. Most of the existing buildings were built at the end of the Ming Dynasty. It covers an area of only more than 1,100 square meters. The monastery is built on Fenghuang Mountain, surrounded by mountains on three sides, with staggered buildings. Its layout is divided into upper and lower courtyards, with two mountain gates, a cave as a gate, separating and connecting the upper courtyard, lower courtyard, and front courtyard.
The main buildings of the upper courtyard are the Mahavira Hall, with Manjusri and Samantabhadra Halls on the left and right, and the North Pole Hall and Ma Wang Temple on both sides;
The lower courtyard mainly includes the Wuliang Hall, Weituo Hall, Moyun Pavilion, Bagua Pavilion, and the Zhong and Gu Lou on the Weituo Hall. The Wuliang Hall is the main hall of the lower courtyard, with five bays in width and a corridor in front of the eaves. The hall houses the Wuliangshou Buddha. The hall was built in the early Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty. It was named after the "Wuliangshou Buddha", which means "infinite Buddha Dharma". It is also known as the "Wuliang Hall" because it has no beams or pillars. It is the Dharma Hall of Xiaoxitian Temple, and also the Zen Hall where monks chant scriptures, preach Dharma, and take refuge. The Weituo Hall is located opposite the Wuliang Hall. Inside, there is a Weituo Buddha carved from a whole piece of nanmu wood in the fifth year of Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty.
Xiaoxitian is famous for its Ming Dynasty colored hanging sculptures. It is known as the Museum of Chinese Hanging Sculpture Art, and the "Hanging Sculpture Masterpiece" in the history of Chinese sculpture art. The Daxiongbao Hall is full of hanging sculptures, with more than 1,000 clay sculptures of various sizes. These statues are arranged according to the 33 heavens, with clear order and appropriate size. The tallest is more than 3 meters, and the smallest is only the size of a thumb. The shapes are vivid and varied, with many but not chaotic, and complex but not miscellaneous. The five main Buddha statues on the front constitute the main body of the magnificent statue group in the hall, from south to north, they are the Medicine Master Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Sakyamuni Buddha, Vairocana Buddha, and Maitreya Buddha. Above the ten great disciples are the exquisitely crafted "琉璃 Shengjing" and "Six Desires Heaven" hanging sculpture groups.
Hanging sculptures, also known as wall sculptures, are indoor colored clay sculptures with a frame, thick at the top and thin at the bottom, suspended in a prefabricated wooden frame fixed to the wall. The upper body of the clay sculpture leans slightly outward. When overlapped, the upper body of the lower layer blocks the feet of the upper sculpture. The multiple layers of overlap create a magnificent effect. The paint pigments are hand-processed from natural minerals. Xiaoxitian's craftsmen used the walls, columns, and purlins inside the building as a support to create various figures, scenes, and decorations. They also reflected the connections between them through ingenious transitions, coordinating with each other in various postures, creating a sense of space and reality of being in the air and looking down at the world.
In addition, the half-cloud pavilion in the lower courtyard also houses a complete Chinese Buddhist canon, the Yongle Beizang. The Buddhist canon was originally housed in the Holy Realm Temple, and was stored here after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
On November 20, 1996, Qianfoan was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

🙏🏻"The land of Xiaoxitian, welcomes the chosen one"~ After the popularity of "Black Myth: Wukong", every visitor is the chosen one!
🌟In a space of less than 170 square meters, there are more than 1,900 densely packed statues. The most shocking thing about Xiaoxitian is the strong sense of oppression that hits you in the face!
✨Xiaoxitian is actually not very photogenic, with Buddhas everywhere, gold and color everywhere, and a sore neck from looking up, it's hard to grasp where the focus is! The exquisite and delicate gods and Buddhas in Xiaoxitian are suspended above the beams, also known as hanging sculptures. There is almost no second place in the country with such a similar space filled with colorful Buddha statues. It is extremely unique, extremely complicated, and extremely gorgeous!
💫Xiaoxitian is like a colored clay Buddhist version of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival", creating a full Buddhist world in a small hall. "Before Xiaoxitian, there were no full hanging sculptures, and after Xiaoxitian, there were no more full hanging sculptures"

Check-in at Xiaoxitian in Xi County
Xiaoxitian in Xi County, located at the top of Phoenix Mountain, one kilometer northwest of Xi County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province, is a Zen Buddhist temple. Originally named Qianfo An, it was founded by Zen Master Dongming in the second year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty (1629). It was named after the thousand Buddha statues in the Mahavira Hall. Later, it was renamed 'Xiaoxitian' to distinguish it from another Ming Dynasty temple 'Daxitian' in the south of the city, as the plaque on the main gate reads 'Dao Ru Xitian' (Path to the Western Heaven).
The entire temple of Xiaoxitian covers an area of more than 1,100 square meters, with many halls and buildings such as the Mahavira Hall, Manjusri Hall, Samantabhadra Hall, Amitabha Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Weituo Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower. The temple is divided into upper, middle, and front courtyards by gates. In fact, two-thirds of the temple's halls are double-story structures.
The cultural relic value of Xiaoxitian in Xi County mainly lies in the well-preserved hanging sculptures in the Mahavira Hall. Most of these hanging sculptures were painted and sculpted between the seventeenth year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty (1644) and the thirteenth year of the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1656), remaining dust-free for over three hundred years. The murals in the Mahavira Hall are even more precious, made with gold leaf and powder, resembling the dragon and phoenix patterns and imperial seals of the palace.
