Xining travel guide and discussion

Chaka Salt Lake in autumn is a true mirror of the sky. Departing from Chaka Town and following Salt Lake Road into the scenic area, you will find fewer tourists and a tranquil atmosphere. Board the miniature train and head toward the heart of the lake; beneath your feet lie white salt crystals, while the distant snow-capped mountains and brilliant blue sky are reflected so perfectly that the line between earth and sky disappears. It is recommended to visit in the morning when the light is soft and reflections are at their sharpest. Wear bright colors—red looks particularly striking against the white expanse. Be sure to bring slippers, as the salt crystals can be sharp on bare feet. If you are driving, it is about a four-hour journey from Xining via the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway. By avoiding the peak season, the quiet of autumn allows you to capture the "Mirror of the Sky" without the crowds. This is truly Qinghai’s most ethereal autumn destination.

When I visited Qinghai Lake, I knew the lake would be beautiful, but I didn't expect to enjoy the little places along the way so much. Instead of staying around the busiest viewpoints, I asked my driver if we could stop somewhere quieter. We found a lovely stretch of lakeside where the blue water seemed to blend into the sky. There were only a few people around, and I could finally enjoy the view without hearing too much noise. To get there, I first travelled to Xining, which was my starting point for exploring Qinghai Lake. From the city, I hired a local driver because I wanted the freedom to stop at different places along the way. Public transport is available for some routes, but having a driver made it much easier to explore the lakeside and nearby villages at my own pace. During the journey, I kept looking out of the window because the scenery changed so much. Sometimes, I saw endless grasslands, and other times, I spotted sheep grazing beside the road. I even asked the driver to stop when I noticed a beautiful view that wasn't on my original plan. My favourite moment was standing beside the lake, feeling the cool wind on my face and watching the sunlight sparkle on the water. I didn't feel the need to rush or take hundreds of photos. I just wanted to remember how peaceful I felt at that moment. Looking back, I think my local discovery made the trip more meaningful. Qinghai Lake wasn't just about visiting a famous attraction for me. It was also about enjoying the unexpected stops, seeing everyday life along the road, and discovering beautiful places I might have missed if I had followed a strict itinerary. Sometimes, the best travel memories happen when we leave a little room for spontaneity. 💙 #localdiscoveries #polltime #chinatravelcircle #travelers #hiddengems #travel2026 #travel

I went to Chaka Salt Lake expecting to see the famous mirror-like lake, but what I enjoyed most was discovering the little things along the way. After spending some time at the main viewing area, I wandered around and found a quieter spot where the sky reflected beautifully on the water. There weren't many people around, so I could take my time enjoying the scenery without feeling rushed. Getting there took a little planning. I first travelled to Xining and then took a train to Ulan, which was a convenient way to get closer to Chaka. From Ulan, I arranged a local car to take me to the salt lake. I liked this option because public transport directly to the attraction can be limited, and having a car made the last part of the journey much easier. When I finally arrived, I was surprised by how peaceful the place felt away from the busy areas. I walked slowly along the viewing paths, watched the clouds change shape in the sky, and took a few photos whenever the reflections looked beautiful. At one point, I simply stood there doing nothing, enjoying the cool breeze and the wide-open view. My favourite discovery wasn't a hidden attraction or a special photo spot. It was the feeling of being somewhere so open and quiet that I could finally slow down and clear my mind. Sometimes, travelling isn't about seeing as many places as possible. It's about finding one little moment that makes the whole journey worthwhile. ❤️ #localdiscoveries #polltime #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle #hiddengems

During my trip to Xining, China, I came across something that at first looked completely ordinary — small dried objects displayed on trays and carefully packed into beautiful gift boxes. Then I found out what they were. This is Chinese cordyceps — Ophiocordyceps sinensis. You may see its name written in several ways: 🇬🇧 Chinese cordyceps 🔬 Ophiocordyceps sinensis 🇨🇳 冬虫夏草 — dōng chóng xià cǎo (dongchong xiacao) 🇷🇺 кордицепс китайский The Chinese name 冬虫夏草 literally translates as something close to “winter insect, summer grass” — and its story is even more unusual than its appearance. 🌿 WHAT IS IT? Ophiocordyceps sinensis is a parasitic fungus associated with caterpillars living in high-altitude areas of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions. The fungus infects the underground larva, develops inside it, and later produces a fruiting body above the ground. That unusual life cycle explains why the natural product looks so strange: part resembles a caterpillar, while a thin dark structure extends from it. And yes — the specimens in my photos are real examples of what I saw during my trip. 💰 WHY IS IT SO VALUABLE? Natural cordyceps is difficult to find and collect. It grows in high-altitude environments and is traditionally valued in China and Tibetan regions. Quality, origin, size and condition can make a huge difference to the price. Some specimens are presented almost like luxury products: carefully sorted, placed individually in small tubes or arranged in expensive-looking gift boxes. That was probably the part that surprised me most. I had never imagined that something with such an unusual appearance could be displayed and sold almost like jewelry. 📍 WHY I SAW IT IN XINING Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, is an interesting place to encounter products connected with the Tibetan Plateau. While walking around the city, I noticed cordyceps in different forms: loose specimens, trays where they appeared to be drying or being sorted, individual pieces in transparent tubes, and elaborate gift sets. At first I simply stopped because I had no idea what I was looking at. A few minutes later, this became one of those unexpected travel moments I remember much better than another ordinary tourist attraction. Instead of just taking a photo and leaving, I started looking more closely at the different specimens and packaging. That is when I realized how important this product is locally. 📌 IF YOU SEE CORDYCEPS IN CHINA A few things I would recommend: · Don’t assume that every product has the same quality or value. · Ask about its origin and grade before buying. · Compare several sellers rather than buying from the first shop. · If the price is high, ask for clear information about authenticity. · Don’t rely on health claims from a seller as medical advice. · If you plan to take it to another country, check the current customs and import rules first. And even if you have absolutely no intention of buying it, seeing Chinese cordyceps in Qinghai is an interesting glimpse into a side of China that many travelers never encounter. ✈️ MY TAKEAWAY This is exactly why I like traveling beyond the most famous destinations. Beijing gave me the Great Wall and imperial history. Shanghai showed me a futuristic China. But Xining gave me something completely different — a look at the culture, products and traditions connected with the highlands of western China. Sometimes the most memorable travel story begins with one simple question: “What on earth is that?” Now I know the answer: 冬虫夏草 — Chinese cordyceps. Would you have guessed what it was just by looking at the photos? #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

For those who want to experience Tibet to the fullest, we recommend taking the Qinghai–Tibet Railway from Xining to Lhasa. The journey takes approximately 20-22 hours and offers stunning views of the plateau, snow-capped mountains, lakes, and the natural beauty of Qinghai and Tibet. 🗓️ Recommended 7-Day, 6-Night Itinerary Day 1: Bangkok → Xining Travel to China and stay overnight in Xining to prepare for the train journey. Day 2: Xining → Lhasa 🚆 Take the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. We recommend booking a Soft Sleeper train for comfortable sleep, as you'll be on the train for almost a full day. Day 3: Arrive in Lhasa – Acclimatize On the first day, avoid strenuous sightseeing, as Lhasa is at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters. Take a leisurely stroll around Barkhor Street and get some rest. Day 4: Potala Palace – Jokhang Temple – Barkhor Street Visit the main landmarks of Lhasa. Day 5: Sera Monastery – Norbulingka Visit Sera Monastery to experience Tibetan culture and explore the Norbulingka Summer Palace. Day 6: Yamdrok Lake 🏔️ Go outside the city to see Yamdrok Lake, a stunning blue lake nestled amidst the mountains – another must-see destination. Day 7: Lhasa → Bangkok ✈️ We recommend flying back via a major Chinese city to save time compared to taking the train. 💰 Estimated Budget Approximately 25,000–40,000 THB/person, depending on airfare, hotel, type of sleeper compartment, and Tibet tour packages. Currently, there are many Xining–Lhasa train services, taking approximately 19 hours and 40 minutes to over 22 hours. The reference price for 2026 is approximately CNY 521 for a Hard Sleeper and CNY 808 for a Soft Sleeper. However, please check the actual price before traveling. 📌 Important Notes Before You Go Tibet is a very high-altitude region. The first day in Lhasa should be dedicated to rest and acclimatization. Avoid brisk walking, strenuous exercise, or an overly packed itinerary. If you plan to visit higher elevations like Yamdrok Lake, it's best to do so after spending some time in Lhasa. Another important point is that international tourists should check the latest Tibet Travel Permit requirements and travel conditions before booking tickets, as entering Tibet has additional requirements compared to general Chinese tourism. Personally, I recommend the Xining → Lhasa route over taking the train from Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. It's shorter but still allows you to experience the key sections of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway – a truly worthwhile train trip to try at least once. 🚆 #Tibet #TibetTravel #Lhasa #TibetanRailway #QinghaiTibetRailway #Lhasa #Tibet #PotalaPalace #YamdrokLake #ChinaTravel #InternationalTravel #Tripcom #IndependentTravel #TravelLover

Xining surprised me much more than I expected. Located in Qinghai Province in northwestern China, the city feels completely different from the huge metropolises many travelers associate with China. Here, modern streets, traditional architecture and the culture of the Tibetan Plateau come together in one place. 📍 ABOUT THE PLACE Walking around Xining, you can find colorful traditional-style buildings with incredibly detailed roofs and decorations standing just a few steps away from modern city blocks. One of the most interesting things I noticed was how many cultural details are hidden around the city: guardian lion sculptures, traditional gates, religious architecture and colorful decorative elements. And then I found one of my favorite photo spots — a cute snow leopard character with the words “雪豹之都 西宁”, meaning “Snow Leopard City · Xining.” The snow leopard has become closely associated with this part of China and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. 😄 A STORY FROM MY TRIP My plan that day was simply to walk around the city for a while. But every time I thought, “Okay, now I’ll go back,” I noticed something else worth photographing. First it was the traditional tower. Then I stopped next to the huge guardian lion. A little later I found the snow leopard character, and suddenly my short walk had turned into a proper exploration of Xining. That’s one of the things I love about traveling in China: sometimes you don’t need a famous attraction or a complicated itinerary. You just start walking and the city creates the route for you. ⭐ MY REVIEW Xining was a very interesting discovery for me. It doesn’t feel like Beijing or Shanghai, and that is exactly what makes it worth exploring. I especially enjoyed the combination of traditional architecture, Tibetan Plateau influences and ordinary modern city life. It feels less obvious and more adventurous than following only China’s most famous tourist routes. 💡 TIPS FOR TRAVELERS ✔️ Explore the city on foot whenever possible. Many interesting details are easy to miss from a car. ✔️ Don’t focus only on famous attractions. Traditional gates, sculptures and architecture can appear unexpectedly along ordinary streets. ✔️ Save important destinations and your hotel address in Chinese on your phone. ✔️ Take your time with photography. Look upward — some of the most beautiful details are on the roofs and upper levels of traditional buildings. ✔️ If you continue from Xining into other parts of Qinghai or toward higher elevations, remember that altitude can increase considerably, so plan your route accordingly. 🏆 MY BEST RECOMMENDATION Use Xining not only as a transit point but as a destination worth exploring itself. Give yourself time to walk around before continuing deeper into Qinghai. For me, the best part wasn’t one individual attraction. It was discovering how many completely different sides of China could appear during one simple walk around the city. Would you add Xining and Qinghai to your China itinerary? 🇨🇳👇 #TravelersVoice #ChinaTravelCircle #Xining #Qinghai #TravelChina #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

I want to share my experience returning to the mesmerizing landscapes of Northwest China on the classic Qinghai-Gansu Loop, because this is one of those rare regions on Earth that you simply cannot fully digest in just one visit. Standing on the vast, open roads where emerald green grasslands suddenly give way to towering sand dunes and ancient Silk Road strongholds, I was reminded why this land pulls me back again and again. From tracing the glass-like reflections at Chaka Salt Lake to catching the sunset glow across the dramatic, fiery ridges of the Zhangye Colorful Danxia formations, every leg of this journey feels like stepping into a totally different world. The magic here isn't just in seeing the sights once… it's about returning with fresh eyes to watch the shifting light transform Mingsha Mountain at dusk or taking extra time in Xining to wander through historical temples and lively local night markets without rushing. To make the absolute most of this journey, smart planning and local insight will save both your time and travel budget. Booking a private charter car is essential because the iconic spots from the vibrant, multi-colored salt pools of Da Qaidam Emerald Lake to the ancient arches of Jiayuguan Pass.. are spread across vast distances. For photography, local secret timing is everything: hit Chaka Salt Lake either before 10 AM or after 4 PM when the winds die down to capture those pristine mirror reflections, and visit the Danxia landforms strictly during late afternoon light when the rock colors truly pop. When budgeting, secure your high-demand tickets early, especially the Mogao Grottoes Class-A passes which require booking 30 days in advance via the official website, and set aside 110 RMB for Mingsha Mountain admission. Visiting during the summer months between June and August rewards you with plush green grasslands in Qilian and golden rapeseed blossoms in Menyuan, offering a completely different seasonal palette that makes returning year after year so rewarding. What keeps me coming back to Northwest China is the sheer variety of active experiences packed into a single route. One day you are walking past the sacred, quiet courtyards of Ta'er Monastery, and the next you are riding camels across the sweeping desert sands of Crescent Spring or catching a scenic train across a reflective salt pan. As night falls in Dunhuang, spend your evening sampling local street snacks at the bustling Shazhou Night Market before heading out into the quiet desert for incredible stargazing. Northwest China is never a "check-it-off-the-list" holiday; it is a profound journey through history, geology, and culture that leaves an indelible mark on your soul, guaranteeing that the moment you leave, you’ll already be planning your return trip. #NorthwestChina #QinghaiGansuLoop #TravelChina #SilkRoad #ChakaSaltLake #ZhangyeDanxia #Dunhuang #Wanderlust #ExploreChina #repeatdestination

Xining is great, but I won't be going back 😭 A brutally honest guide to avoiding pitfalls I just finished a 5-day trip to Xining and the Qinghai-Gansu small loop. Honestly, Xining's blue skies, evening breeze, and vast Northwest scenery are truly healing. Every photo looks like a wallpaper. It's niche, relaxed, uncrowded, and quiet—a sense of vastness you don't find in inland cities! But I honestly wouldn't blindly come back a second time... It's not that the scenery is bad; it's that the trip involves hidden suffering, too many scams, and it's very easy for beginners to fall into traps! I've compiled a ton of real, hard-earned experiences that no one tells you. It's all the truth. If you're planning to go to Xining, make sure to read this before you leave to avoid 90% of the pitfalls!! 🌬️ Reason 1 to reconsider: The climate is far more intense than you'd imagine, and it's really tough Don't be fooled by the "Xining summer resort" label! The comfort only lasts while you're in the shade during the day; the actual experience is super grueling! The altitude in downtown Xining is 2,261 meters. It doesn't look high, but most visitors from out of town experience mild altitude sickness upon arrival! Don't try to be a hero just because you're in good shape! On the first day, don't run around taking photos, don't stay up late, and absolutely do not take a hot shower! I took a shower the night I arrived, and by early morning, I had a headache, chest tightness, dry mouth, and shortness of breath. I couldn't sleep until 3 AM—it was agonizing! Plus, the climate is extremely dry! If you're coming from the south or coastal areas, you'll likely have a dry, sore throat, chapped lips, and dry, bleeding nasal passages on the first day. Skincare products won't save you—you must prepare moisturizer, lip balm, and nasal spray in advance. The most ridiculous part is the extreme temperature difference between day and night + the toxic UV rays! It's comfortable when it's sunny during the day at around 25°C, but it cools down instantly when it's cloudy or windy. At night, it drops to just over 10°C. A 15°C temperature difference between day and night is the norm! Important!! The UV rays here are 3 times stronger than inland! Without cloud cover, you can get tanned or sunburned even on cloudy days! I was lazy and didn't apply sunscreen, and my shoulders were red, stinging, and peeling within half a day. Sunglasses, sun-protective clothing, a hat, and sunscreen are essential—you can't even dare to go out without proper sun protection! 🚗 Reason 2 to reconsider: The transport scams are deep, and beginners are 100% going to get ripped off This is the biggest pitfall of traveling in Xining, bar none!! All the attractions in Xining are super spread out. Qinghai Lake, Ta'er Monastery, and Chaka Salt Lake are hundreds of kilometers from the city center. Public transport is scarce and slow. If you're traveling independently, you're almost forced to carpool, charter a car, or join a tour group, which has become a disaster zone for illegal taxis and unscrupulous vendors ripping off tourists! ❌ Never trust people soliciting passengers at the train station/airport As soon as you exit, you'll be surrounded by drivers chatting you up, shouting "Qinghai Lake for 50 per person" or "Low-price one-day lake tour." It sounds like great value, but it's all a trap! After you get in at a low price, they'll force you to pay more halfway through. If you don't pay, they'll dump you on the side of the road. They'll also force you to go to jade, Tibetan silver, and local specialty shops, and won't let you leave unless you buy something! ❌ Absolutely do not book one-day tours under 200 yuan The lake tours you see online or on the street for 199, 99, or 88 yuan are all pure shopping traps! Most of the day is spent visiting various shops, with forced sales of oxygen, Tibetan costume photos, and gift boxes. You'll have less than 2 hours of actual time to explore and take photos at the scenic spots. You're just paying to suffer! ✅ Reliable transport advice 1. For short trips within the city, only take legitimate ride-hailing services or taxis; prices are transparent with no surcharges 2. For the Qinghai-Gansu loop, prioritize booking a pure-play chartered car through a legitimate platform. 800–1,200/day is the normal market price. Make sure to sign a formal contract to prevent mid-trip price hikes 3. Refuse all roadside low-price carpooling or private drivers soliciting you. Being greedy for small savings will definitely lead to big losses 🛕 Reason 3 to reconsider: The scenic spots are full of hidden traps; everything is a tourist trap 1. Ta'er Monastery | Full of pitfalls As a must-visit landmark in Xining, it looks solemn and quiet, but the surrounding scams are ridiculously numerous! ❌ Don't believe the "scalpers offering free tickets" or "secret paths into the scenic area" at the entrance. They are all scams. You'll be blocked on the secret paths and end up wasting your money ❌ Refuse all unlicensed guides or private guides who approach you; their explanations are confusing and they charge exorbitant prices ❌ The amulets, Tibetan-style bracelets, old Tibetan jewelry, and handmade items from grandmas at the stalls by the entrance are 99% mass-produced goods from Yiwu, marked up more than ten times. If you don't know the market, definitely don't buy them! ✅ The right way to play: Buy official tickets online for 70 yuan (students get half price), follow the official guide for the tour, and don't buy any roadside souvenirs! 2. Along the lake route | Tons of hidden fees Along the popular lake-loop road, there are tons of private, unauthorized pastures and niche photo spots. There are no official signs, and locals will randomly block the road to charge fees, ranging from 10 to 50 yuan! The scenery inside is ordinary and not worth the ticket price at all—it's just pure exploitation of tourists. If you see a private toll point, just bypass it. The official free viewing platforms have scenery that is more than enough! 🍜 Reason 4 to reconsider: Popular food streets are all traps—expensive and taste bad Don't be misled by popular travel guides anymore! Mojia Street and Shuijing Lane are definitely not where locals go for food! These two popular streets are specifically designed to rip off out-of-town tourists. All the snacks are marked up double. The liangpi, tianpei, and hand-grabbed mutton taste perfunctory and inauthentic. The value for money is extremely low; a casual meal costs over 80 per person, which is totally not worth it! ✅ Local's secret food guide If you want authentic Xining Halal food, go straight to the Xinqian Night Market or the alleys around Dongguan Street! It's affordable, authentic, and the portions are huge. The hand-grabbed mutton is tender and not gamey, the pan-fried potatoes are crispy on the outside and glutinous on the inside, and the Qinghai yogurt is rich and refreshing. You can eat until you're stuffed for just a few dozen yuan—it's the authentic Northwest vibe! 🏠 Accommodation pitfalls | Don't just book anywhere! If you pick the wrong location, you'll be struggling the whole time ❌ I don't recommend staying in homestays or hotels near Xining Station or scenic spots Most are simple, renovated properties with poor hygiene and terrible soundproofing. Prices double during peak season, and the value for money is extremely low! ✅ Best accommodation choice: The Chengxi area in the city center It has convenient transport, complete supermarkets, and tons of dining options. The environment is clean and comfortable, making it super convenient for daytime travel and nighttime food exploration! 📝 Honest summary | It's not that it's not beautiful; it's just too easy to fall into traps Xining's scenery is truly worth the trip: clear blue skies, vast wilderness, and quiet ancient temples that heal all anxiety But travel here is dense with scams, the climate is harsh, and there's a huge information gap regarding transport. If you set off blindly without doing research, you'll just fall into traps the whole way and pay to suffer My sincere advice: If it's your first time in Xining, prioritize choosing a legitimate, pure-play small tour group. Practice good sun protection and moisturizing, don't be greedy for low prices, and don't spend money recklessly—only then can you truly understand the romance of the Northwest! I've already helped everyone avoid all the landmines. Follow this guide, and you'll easily unlock the perfect Xining trip✨

Traffic practical posts may not be popular on this platform, but I will insist on writing, because such information is harder to find online, I hope to help you. Once upon a time, Cathay Pacific launched many tickets from Guangzhou via Hong Kong to other places, the price is a lot cheaper than Hong Kong, but spicy and not spicy, first Guangzhou back to Hong Kong is a must sit, otherwise subsequent trips will be invalid. And Cathay Pacific Guangzhou has moved to the newly opened T3 in recent years, the subway is not open for the time being, so although it is not far, but from the Shenzhen border seems quite a turning point. Cathay Pacific now has three flights a day from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, with departure times at 5am, 10.10am and 10.20pm. The earliest group basically must arrive in Guangzhou one night earlier for the night, so there is no rush, you can go up at any time you like. The following mainly discusses the other two flights. Let's talk about the night departure, Guangzhou airport stops checkin before 60 minutes. So no later than 9:20 to report to G area. The most direct way is to take a train from Lo Wu to Guangzhou East Station (there are direct trains per hour, the whole journey only takes about an hour), then transfer to Metro Line 3 to Gaozeng Station and transfer to a free shuttle bus. Note that Metro Line 3 only goes to T1/T2 and is far separated from T3. Don't go wrong. Total time from Lo Wu Port (excluding customs crossing time): 2 hours 7pm Train - 8pm Guangzhou East Station Transfer - 8:20 Guangzhou Metro Line 3 - 8:50 T3 Free Shuttle - 9pm Arrive at Baiyun Airport T3 (Arrive 80 minutes before departure) Then came the 10:10 am flight. Since it is 10 minutes earlier than the night shift (10:10 vs 10:20), having a ten-minute buffer seems less stable if you use the same schedule to take the 7am train. The Lo Wu/Futian border opens at 6:30, which is basically no earlier. So be sure to cross the border at Huanggang, then take the subway/taxi to the nearest Futian high-speed rail station to take the high-speed rail to Guangzhou East, then change to the city rail to Baiyun Airport East Station. The advantage of this line is that the city rail can go directly to T3 without having to change trains. Total time spent at Roaring Port (excluding customs crossing time): 2 hours and 50 minutes 5:54 First train at Huanggang Port Metro Station (note that you must change to Line 11 via Huaqiang North, the opposite direction via Fumin has not been available for a while) - 6:19 Futian HSR Station - 6:48 HSR G2942 7:40 Guangzhou South Transfer - 8:03 Up City Rail - 8:45 Arrive at Baiyun Airport T3 (arrived 85 minutes before departure) Since you still need to take the Royal Bus to cross the border at Roaring Hill (public transportation can reach the port gate directly before 6:30, you only need to take the Royal Bus to cross the bridge once), so you need to allow more time. I believe that with the completion and opening of the New Roaring Port soon, the crossing time can be shortened a lot, plus it only takes about 10 minutes by taxi to Futian Expressway. The whole journey can be reduced to about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Although Hong Kong airport is very convenient, in fact, sometimes to other airports by plane will actually have more advantages (destination/price), I tried to go to Changsha Airport to take a direct flight to Xining. I have the opportunity to share with you the transportation tips for nearby airports.

#easytravelpost 🚆 22 Hours to Tibet by Train: What It’s Really Like Inside Taking the train from Xining to Lhasa had been on my travel list for a long time — and after spending almost an entire day onboard, I finally understood why this route is such a big part of the Tibet experience. We traveled on Train Z8991 from Xining to Lhasa, spending around 22 hours crossing some of the most dramatic high-altitude landscapes in China. But what is the train actually like inside? And which ticket should you choose? Here’s a look at the main options. 👇 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎟️ Train Classes 🪑 Hard Seat The most affordable ticket. You travel in a regular seated carriage, which can be challenging on such a long overnight journey. It works if keeping the cost as low as possible is your main priority. 🛏️ Hard Sleeper This was our choice. The carriage is divided into open sections with six beds: ✔️ 2 lower bunks ✔️ 2 middle bunks ✔️ 2 upper bunks ✔️ Bedding provided ✔️ Shared luggage areas For me, this is one of the best options if you want to experience the famous Tibet train without paying for the most expensive category. 🚪 Soft Sleeper A step up in comfort and privacy. Usually there are four beds inside an enclosed compartment, giving you more personal space and a quieter atmosphere. These tickets can be harder to get, especially on popular travel dates. ⭐ Deluxe Soft Sleeper Available only on certain trains. Some services offer private compartments with just two beds, making this the most comfortable and private way to travel by train to Tibet. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🛏️ What Is Hard Sleeper Like? Despite the name, “Hard Sleeper” doesn’t mean sleeping on a hard wooden bed. 😄 You get a proper bunk with a mattress, pillow and blanket. The lower bunk is the easiest to access and has the most space above your head, while the upper bunk feels more private. One thing to remember: Hard Sleeper compartments are open to the corridor, so you’ll be sharing the space with other passengers throughout the journey. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🫁 Oxygen on the Tibet Train This is probably one of the most interesting features onboard. As the railway climbs toward the Tibetan Plateau, the trains operating on the route are equipped with oxygen-supply systems designed for high-altitude travel. Sleeper areas can also have individual oxygen outlets available if needed. The landscape outside gradually changes as the train climbs higher — and watching that transition is part of what makes this journey so memorable. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🍜 Food & Dining Car You don’t have to survive on snacks for 22 hours. There is a restaurant carriage where passengers can buy hot dishes and drinks, while hot-water dispensers throughout the train make it easy to prepare tea, coffee or instant noodles. For me, one of the best moments was simply sitting by the window with something hot to drink while the Tibetan Plateau slowly passed outside. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚻 Facilities on Board You’ll find basic shared facilities throughout the train, including: ✔️ Toilets ✔️ Wash basins ✔️ Mirrors ✔️ Hot-water dispensers ✔️ Luggage storage areas I’d definitely recommend bringing wet wipes, tissues, hand sanitizer, snacks and a fully charged power bank. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏔️ The Real Reason to Take This Train Flying to Lhasa is much faster. But the train gives you something an airplane simply can’t: the journey itself. For hours, you can watch huge open landscapes, mountains, lakes, grasslands and remote areas of the Tibetan Plateau appear outside your window. Sometimes the most memorable part of traveling isn’t arriving at the destination. It’s everything you see along the way. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💡 Which Class Would I Choose? 🥇 Soft Sleeper — if comfort and privacy matter most 🥈 Hard Sleeper — my choice for the best balance of price and experience 🥉 Hard Seat — mainly for travelers on a very limited budget We chose Hard Sleeper, and after 22 hours onboard, I was happy with the decision. The Xining–Lhasa train wasn’t simply transportation to Tibet. It became part of the adventure itself. 🚆🏔️ Would you spend 22 hours on this train, or would you rather fly straight to Lhasa? #travel2026 #china #chinatravel #tibet #lhasa #tibettrain #traintravel #railway #travelchina #chinatrip #couplestrip

On the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop, Sun and Moon Mountain is an unavoidable landmark. This not-so-steep peak quietly stands at the border between Huangyuan County and Gonghe County in Qinghai. It is not only a geographical dividing line but also a culturally significant mountain carrying ancient legends. The wind blowing through the mountain seems to whisper stories from a thousand years ago. Between one mountain, both the scenery and the stories are exceptionally captivating. Sun and Moon Mountain is located on the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an average elevation of 3,520 meters. It holds special geographical significance: to the east lies the gentle and beautiful Huangshui Valley, with continuous fertile fields and lush forests, resembling a Jiangnan-style pastoral landscape; to the west stretches the vast and boundless Qinghai grasslands, rich in pasture with cattle and sheep everywhere, full of highland charm. Since ancient times, this has been a crucial passage from the Central Plains to the Western Regions and Tibet, historically known as "Chiling," an important pass on the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road, witnessing countless travelers over the centuries. Today, Sun and Moon Mountain is full of scenic and cultural highlights. The scenic area is divided into two ancient-style pavilions, the Sun Pavilion and the Moon Pavilion, facing each other from a distance. Their simple and elegant designs are core attractions for visitors. Standing on the pavilion and looking afar, one side shows green mountains and farmland, while the other reveals vast grasslands—two completely different sceneries captured in one view, creating a fascinating visual experience. A statue of Princess Wencheng stands on the mountain, graceful and elegant, becoming the most striking symbol here. Prayer flags flutter in the wind across the mountain, colorful strips swaying under the blue sky, adding rich Tibetan flavor to the wilderness. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom in succession on the slopes, the grass is lush, and cattle and sheep stroll leisurely—every snapshot is a healing highland scene. Speaking of Sun and Moon Mountain, one cannot miss the thousand-year-old legend of Princess Wencheng. When she married into Tibet and reached Chiling, she looked back at her homeland in the Central Plains, overwhelmed by homesickness. She took out the Sun and Moon Mirror and decisively shattered it, determined to let go of her attachments and continue westward. Later generations renamed this mountain Sun and Moon Mountain to commemorate this great woman. Over a thousand years, this story has been passed down through generations, giving an ordinary mountain a profound warmth. This place is also a site of Han-Tibetan cultural integration, where trade and folk customs have continued, and the spirit of harmony flows to this day. Here are some practical travel tips. The scenic area is close to the highway, with convenient transportation, suitable for short stops along the way. The best time to visit is from June to September when the vegetation is lush and the scenery is at its best. The altitude is high, so slow down your pace to avoid dizziness or discomfort. The highland sun is strong, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun, and since it can be windy on the mountain, bring a windproof jacket. Around the scenic area, there are unique Tibetan-style shops and local delicacies where you can pause and taste the local flavors. One Sun and Moon Mountain, half farmland, half grassland, one legend passed down for a thousand years. When you arrive here, slow down, feel the highland breeze, read the ancient stories, and experience the unique depth and romance of Qinghai.

Rolling alpine meadows with blooming flower slopes. Prayer flags flutter along the ridge. The Laji snow mountain silhouette is clear in the distance, with Qinghai Lake’s far peaks faintly visible. Tibetan-style highland outfits create a strong atmosphere. The pasture is wide and sparsely populated, no need to compete for photo spots. Noon🥩: Enjoy hand-pulled lamb, butter tea, and Qinghai clay pot bread at a Tibetan herder’s home at the mountain base. Authentic pastoral flavors. About 38 per person to eat well. Immerse yourself in the vast wilderness of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. 🕳️Practical tips ✅Public areas of the grassland pasture are free to visit🆓. Free parking at the mountain top. Pilgrimage to grassland temples is optional. ✅High altitude with large temperature differences between morning and night. Bring warm jackets. Strong UV rays require full sun protection gear. ✅Do not trample the grassland or chase yak and sheep herds. Respect Tibetan herders’ customs. ✅Pastoral facilities are basic. Bring your own drinking water and snacks. 🌟Hidden gem 4: Huzhu Zhanian road primitive forest valley (Qinghai’s little Swiss forest secret) 📍Location: Along Zhanian road valley, Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Haidong city 🚗Distance from Xining city: about 1.5 hours by car 🗺️One-day itinerary Morning🌲: Pristine original river valley secret in the eastern Qilian Mountains! Mosquitoes are common; bring insect repellent. ✅Strict forest fire control in Qinghai forests. No open flames outdoors. Do not pick wild highland flowers or plants.

Before going to Xining, I always thought of it as just a transit point for Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake. After staying and exploring for a few days, I realized Xining itself is worth visiting: it has temples, museums, a highland zoo, and plenty of parks and old streets perfect for leisurely walks. Plus, Xining’s pace is much more relaxed than the popular loop routes, prices are relatively affordable, and the food has a distinct northwest flavor. For first-timers, I recommend setting aside 4 days to separate the city and surrounding areas. This way, you won’t feel rushed and your body can gradually adjust to the high altitude. Xining’s average elevation is about 2,261 meters. Although most people won’t experience obvious discomfort, avoid intense exercise and overpacking your schedule on the first day. 🗺️4 days 3 nights itinerary Day 1: Dongguan Mosque → Moji Street → Central Square → Shuijing Alley Day 2: Qinghai Provincial Museum → Xinning Square → Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Animal Park Day 3: Nanliang Hutai Ruins Park → Xining People’s Park → Beichan Temple Day 4: Ta’er Monastery → Danggar Ancient City → Riyue Mountain 🏙️Day 1: old town culture and Xining cuisine My first stop was Dongguan Mosque. This is an active religious site, so when visiting, pay attention to the open areas, avoid entering prayer zones, don’t take photos of people praying, and dress modestly. After leaving Dongguan Mosque, you can walk or take a taxi to Moji Street. It’s now quite commercialized, so don’t expect every trendy shop to be amazing. It’s mainly good for soaking up the city center vibe and sampling some local snacks. In the afternoon, head to Central Square and Shuijing Alley. Shuijing Alley is a good place to buy souvenirs and snacks, but when purchasing items like yak jerky, goji berries, or cordyceps, always check the price, net weight, and production info first. Don’t rush into buying just because the staff are enthusiastic. Try to get back to your hotel early on day 1, drink less alcohol, and avoid long hot showers right after arriving in Xining. 🏛️Day 2: museums and highland animals On the second morning, visit the Qinghai Provincial Museum. It’s best to do this in the first half of your trip to get a sense of Qinghai’s history, ethnic culture, and artifacts. This background makes the natural sights you see later more meaningful. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM. It’s usually closed on Mondays. Admission is free but requires advance booking through official channels. Summer is busy, so plan ahead. After the museum, have lunch near Xinning Square, then head to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Animal Park. The zoo is quite large—I set aside most of the day. The highlight isn’t common animals but highland species like snow leopards and Pallas’s cats. There are slopes inside, so wear comfortable shoes. If you’re with elderly or children, don’t rush the route. 🌳Day 3: leisurely park visits and city views Start day 3 at Nanliang Hutai Ruins Park. It’s not the most popular spot in Xining, but it’s less crowded and good for history enthusiasts. Next, visit Xining People’s Park. The park has a local, everyday feel where you can see residents walking, exercising, and drinking tea. After two busy days, a relaxed park visit is more comfortable than rushing to more attractions. In the afternoon, go to Beichan Temple. It’s built on a hillside, so some paths require climbing. Don’t push yourself to go higher if the weather is bad or you’re tired. From a viewpoint with a wide view, you can overlook Xining city. This day is mainly for slow exploration. In the evening, try a Qinghai-style hot pot to save energy for the next day’s trip outside the city. 🏔️Day 4: Ta’er Monastery, ancient city, and Riyue Mountain Day 4 covers the longest distances, so I recommend hiring a car, joining a carpool, or booking an official day tour. First stop is Ta’er Monastery. This isn’t just a photo spot. Don’t touch Buddha statues or ritual items, and some halls prohibit photography. Follow all on-site instructions. The monastery usually opens early in peak season, but opening times vary by season. Confirm via official channels before you go. Next, visit Danggar Ancient City. You can stroll the main street at a relaxed pace. Some internal exhibition halls may charge separately. If you don’t want to visit the exhibitions, walking around the outer streets is fine. The last stop is Riyue Mountain. It’s higher in elevation than downtown Xining, and the wind is noticeably stronger. Even in summer, bring a windbreaker. If it’s cloudy, rainy, or you feel dizzy, don’t keep climbing quickly. Visiting all three places in one day is tight. If you’re with elderly or children, consider only Ta’er Monastery plus either Danggar Ancient City or Riyue Mountain. 🏨Where to stay For first-timers, I suggest staying near Central Square, Dashizi, or Xining Station. Central Square and Dashizi are convenient for dining and shopping, making it easy to explore city attractions. Xining Station is good if you plan to take a train or join a loop tour the next day, but check the actual distance to the station entrance when booking. If you prefer quiet and higher-quality accommodation, choose the Haihu New District, but you’ll need taxis to reach some old town attractions. 🍜Xining food recommendations 🥣 Qinghai old yogurt: thick texture, try it with little sugar first to taste the original flavor. 🍲 Qinghai-style hot pot: usually served in a copper pot with beef, lamb, meatballs, tofu, and vegetables. Best shared with a group. 🍜 Lamb intestine noodles: has a distinctive flavor. If you don’t like offal, order with caution. 🥩 Hand-pulled lamb: choose reputable restaurants with steady customers. Order by the number of people, don’t order too much at once. 🥔 Pan-fried lamb ribs: lamb ribs, potatoes, and side dishes stir-fried together. The flavor is strong and pairs well with staple foods. 🥟 Sweet fermented rice, niangpi (cold skin noodles), and gamianpian (hand-pulled noodles) are also worth trying. If you have a sensitive stomach, don’t mix cold dishes, lamb, and yogurt all on the first day. ⚠️Useful tips and warnings ☀️ UV rays in Xining are strong. Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days. Bring a hat and sunglasses. 🧥 There’s a big temperature difference between day and night. Bring a light jacket in summer. Take a windbreaker for Riyue Mountain. 🚗 Ta’er Monastery, Danggar Ancient City, and Riyue Mountain are outside the city center. Don’t rely on straight-line distances on maps. 💊 Don’t treat oxygen tanks as a must-have. For normal city trips, slow down and rest well. Seek medical help if you feel unwell. 🛍️ Be rational when buying medicinal herbs, silverware, and expensive souvenirs. Don’t buy so-called “collector’s items” if you don’t understand quality. 📅 Museum, temple, and attraction opening hours may change unexpectedly. Confirm again on the day you go. My biggest takeaway from this Xining trip is: don’t just see it as a transit point for Qinghai travel. Spend a few days exploring slowly, and you’ll find a city with the vastness of a highland city plus the everyday charm of parks, old streets, and snack stalls. For your first trip to Xining, do you want to check in at Ta’er Monastery, the highland zoo, or start with a Qinghai-style hot pot? travel guide days 3 nights in Xining travel food check-in northwest travel

If you haven’t heard of Nianbaoyuze yet, your travel list is missing a must-visit destination! Known as the god’s backyard and the sunset of the East, it features snow-capped mountains, lakes, flower seas, yaks… every scene looks like a living painting 🎨. But! ⚠️ The core area of the park is temporarily closed for ecological protection. If you want to visit, be sure to read this guide on how to “take a detour” and still amaze your friends with stunning photos 👇 🌟 Nianbaoyuze · essential info 📍 Location: Jiuzhi County, Guoluo Prefecture, Qinghai Province, about 560 km from Xining (8-hour drive) 💰 Tickets: The core area is currently closed, but outer areas (such as Fairy Lake entrance and Nianbaoyuze National Geopark) are free or low cost. Check local announcements for details. ⏰ Best time: Late June to early August (wildflowers bloom + snowmelt, most colorful), but check the weather in advance! 🌡️ What to wear: Altitude 4,000 m+, big temperature swings! Bring a windbreaker, fleece, and raincoat. UV rays are intense, so sunglasses and sunscreen are essential (or you might come back unrecognizable even to your own mom 👩🏿‍🦱) 🚗 How to explore? Two options Option 1 (official recommendation): Visit Nianbaoyuze National Geopark (west side of Jiuzhi County). Though not the core area, you can still see continuous snow mountains and blue lakes. Tickets cost about 30 yuan. Fewer people, beautiful scenery. Option 2 (hardcore): Hike across Xiawen Cuo – Upper and Lower Rigancuo (guide required!). Along the way, you’ll pass flower seas, wetlands, and snow mountain reflections. About 3 days total, suitable for experienced outdoor enthusiasts 🏔️. Friendly reminder: If the core area is still closed, don’t climb over fences! You’ll be fined and blacklisted. Be good~ 📸 Photo spots · great shots with your phone 1️⃣ Fairy Lake entrance boardwalk: Snow mountains reflect in emerald green water, white flowers float on the lake. Stand on the wooden boardwalk and shoot wide-angle for a natural filter effect ✨. 2️⃣ Xiawen Cuo wetland: In June, the ground is covered with Gesang flowers, with snow mountains in the background. Wear a red dress and lie in the flower sea for amazing photos! 3️⃣ Rigancuo pass: A secret spot only reachable by hiking. Shoot prayer flags and distant mountains in the early morning backlight for magical light and shadow 🪄. Tip: Bring a drone! The aerial view of Nianbaoyuze’s wrinkles is breathtaking (stay away from prayer flags and wildlife) 🍜 Food, lodging & tips Food: Try yak hotpot, butter tea, and tsampa in Jiuzhi County! Recommended “Snowland Tibetan Cuisine,” about 40 yuan per person to eat your fill. Lodging: Hostel beds in the county cost 80 yuan/night. For stargazing, choose “Nianbaoyuze Tibetan homestay,” with large dorms but a warm stove 🔥. Watch out: ⚠️ Don’t trust roadside “cordyceps diggers,” most are just performing! ⚠️ Always agree on horse rental time beforehand. Some have been scammed from 50 yuan/15 minutes to just 5 minutes. The beauty of Nianbaoyuze is the kind that leaves you speechless. When I first saw Fairy Lake, I froze—the lake was as still as a mirror, the snow mountain reflection so clear I couldn’t tell real from reflection. At that moment, I understood why Tibetans call it the “sacred mountain.” If it’s temporarily closed, don’t complain. Nature is resting, and we must learn to wait. Meanwhile, visit nearby Lianbaoyuze (in Sichuan, similar scenery and open) to satisfy your craving. One day, Nianbaoyuze will return with even purer beauty 💙. 💡 Follow me to unlock hidden gems and take the road less traveled! (Be sure to check the “Nianbaoyuze park announcement” before you go to avoid wasted trips!)

July in Xining is truly a gift from heaven. While the mainland is scorching hot, daytime temperatures here are just over 20°C, and you still need a light jacket at night. It’s definitely the ultimate summer escape. The following guide is based on my own experience and mistakes. The order is random—pick what you need. 🌚 Pitfall guide Ignore those unofficial guides at the entrance of Ta’er Monastery. If you want a tour, go through the official channel to avoid being taken to shopping stops. Huangyu fish is a protected species. Don’t order it even if you see it on the menu. We don’t get involved in illegal activities. Don’t buy oxygen tanks at scenic spots. Paying 50–100 yuan per bottle is a rip-off. You can get them at city pharmacies for 15–20 yuan. For mild altitude sickness, drinking two glucose oral solutions works better. You can stroll around Mojia Street, but for food, head south to Nanguan Street. Prices are about 30% lower and the food is more authentic. On your first day, don’t wash your hair or take a shower or rush around. Xining is over 2,200 meters above sea level, so take it slow. 🏔️ Must-visit spots Ta’er Monastery costs 70 yuan. With red walls, golden roofs, and the Eight Treasures Pagoda, it’s one of the six major Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Arrive around 8 AM to avoid tour groups. No photos or short skirts/shorts inside the halls. Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum’s south hall is 60 yuan, and the north hall plus the “Painted Panorama” lower exhibition is 30 yuan. The 618-meter-long thangka is indoors with air conditioning, perfect for visiting during the midday heat. Dongguan Grand Mosque is free and looks best in the evening light. Nanshan Park is also free. Climb to Phoenix Terrace for a panoramic view of Xining. If you have kids, the Xining Wildlife Park is 30 yuan. The snow leopards and Pallas’s cats are more interesting than the park itself. 🍜 Authentic food Hand-pulled lamb is the soul of the cuisine. Look for bone-in ribs dipped in salt and pepper. Expect to pay 50–60 yuan per person. Local spots like Yixin are more reliable than trendy restaurants. Paozhang noodles cost 15–20 yuan a bowl and are very chewy. Even CCTV has filmed here. Sweet fermented barley (tianpei) is 5–8 yuan per serving. It’s barley fermented with a slight alcohol aroma and tastes amazing chilled in summer. Old-style yogurt is 3–5 yuan a bowl, with a thick cream layer you can scoop with a spoon. Kangguo lamb costs 40–60 yuan per person. The potatoes soak up the lamb fat and are incredibly flavorful. Words can’t describe it—you have to try it yourself. At night markets, eat grilled skewers and niangpi (cold skin noodles) while walking. That’s the real way to enjoy Xining. 🧥 Essential clothing Short sleeves are enough during the day in July, but once the sun sets, temperatures drop to the teens. Pack a light jacket or even a thin down jacket. The day-to-night temperature difference can exceed 15°C. Remember the phrase “onion-style dressing”—short sleeves + sun protection shirt + thin down jacket for easy layering. The plateau’s UV rays are three times stronger than the plains. Don’t skimp on SPF 50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Even cloudy days can cause sunburn. Bring lip balm and moisturizer. Dry, cracked lips are common here. 🚗 Transportation guide Fly into Caojiapu Airport from out of town. The airport shuttle costs 20 yuan to the city. Ignore unlicensed taxis asking for 150 yuan. Public buses and ride-hailing in the city are cheap. There’s an intercity bus directly to Ta’er Monastery, which is more cost-effective than hiring a car. If you’re heading to Qinghai Lake, don’t drive yourself on the pastoral mountain roads. Rockfalls during the rainy season are serious. Book official shared rides or shuttle buses on Trip.com. They gather early and depart on time, so no need to haggle on site. High-speed train and flight tickets are tight during peak season. Booking two weeks in advance is more reliable. You can have a comfortable three-day, two-night trip for about 1,000 yuan per person. After that, it’s up to you if you can finish that plate of hand-pulled lamb.
