Hotel Sao Joao de Deus by Ridan Hotels

The beauty at the front desk was very good at English and introduced the history of the hotel very warmly. The hotel is transformed from an ancient building in the 17th century. The room is very spacious, that is, there are too few sockets. You have to charge the plug and you can unplug the TV. The sound insulation is not very good, and the sound of passing cars outside can be heard.

The location is perfect, out in the country, very quiet and tranquil with beautiful views from the balconies. The rooms are large and satisfactory for a 3 star. But, there are problems. Wi-Fi doesn't work reliably in the rooms. The hotel is beginning to look a bit run-down and needs reinvestment, furniture in the rooms is worn. There was only one employee in the whole hotel to serve customers. The food in the dining room (dinner) is HORRIBLE - whoever is cooking is not a chef, avoid eating in the dining room at all costs. For an overnight stay, or a longer stay the rooms are fine. Just find somewhere else to eat.

This was our second visit to this hotel and it really is a lovely place. The building is a converted convent and the convention has been beautifully done. Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice in a buffet style. The staff are friendly and attentive, especially the breakfast and Bar staff. We first visited not long after the hotel had opened and it was noticeably busier on this visit. Elvas is a lovely place to wander round. The fortifications, castle, small ally ways, churches, gardens & museums are a joy to explore. It also has some great quality restaurants. Would highly recommend Adega Regional, Recanto de São Paulo & especially Acontece. There is plenty of free parking around the hotel if you are traveling by car and it makes a great base for exploring the area, even nipping over the border into Spain. Look forward to returning again.

A pleasant hotel a little already needing works. The bathrooms are already in use. The floor and very old locks. For people with reduced mobility, it becomes very complicated only to have bathrooms. The breakfast is satisfactory. The hygiene tb is present in the rooms and inside the hotel. But walking through the pool patio we found some less careful part behind the breakfast room. But nothing worrying. In general, a pleasant hotel for a weekend.

For a 5* hotel, it needs improvement. It is not enough to have the Name and the classification. Small details that make all the difference. I don't know if the time is bad, but covid and crisis can't be an excuse for everything. And considering the price should have better service! Besides that there were few guests, so the dedication could be different. Good rooms, although somewhat damaged, double bed with 2 single mattresses, which could be more secure and adherent, in addition to the mattress protection, not comfortable, we know that there are more comfortable protections. Great light insulation, sound not really. Great shower! Nespresso machine in the room. PA very good, but for a 5* it should be great, eg boiled eggs and cheeses, already dried out. Platters to be replaced, it was always necessary to notify the employees. Nice SPA area, but the water was cold, and you need to make a reservation, but it was still full. It is not clear then why schedule an appointment. Access to the gym and the indoor pool, the water was also cold outside the hotel. Which with the cold is not pleasant at all. Staff friendliness in general. It is a good hotel to relax, due to its surroundings and the geographical area, which is quiet, with good access.

Lovely old hilltop house with really friendly and helpful owners, although they don’t speak much English so conversing is tricky! Beautifully looked after and clean with a large lounge area which you can use to relax and a terrace overlooking the valley, what a view! We received a welcome glass of port and the breakfast was substantial and delicious. Parking is outside the house and requires nerves of steel to navigate the narrow cobbled lanes around the inside of the walls to the top! It’s very near the castle which is well worth exploring and has nice gardens for a picnic. You can explore the whole town on foot and a day is more than enough so if you stay 2 nights you have time to relax. There are a few restaurants and cafes in the area but some of them get booked up so it’s worth reserving. Marvao is not as much off the beaten track as the guide books would have you believe. My only gripes are that (1) the house is quite echoey inside and people coming in late can disturb the whole building, and I could hear the man next door snoring quite clearly which is a shame because it’s otherwise so peaceful here at night and (2) the lighting is quite dim, not good for older eyes reading.

Simply amazing. A lovely restauration of an old building that came out to be a beautiful hotel. The only problem that they were not allowed to add an elevator - but the staff is helping and bringing the luggage up and down. We had a gourmet dinner there and a lovely and informative service from Joao the owner and the rest of the staff. Highly recommended.
