In 1934, 30-year-old Lin Huiyin was at the Iron Buddha of Lingyan Temple in Xiaoxiang Village, Fenyang County, Shanxi Province. Liang Sicheng captured this beautiful moment: the Buddha lowered his head and looked down, while Lin Huiyin raised her head and stared at him. The two were in harmony with each other. Lin Huiyin gently stroked the open-air Buddha with her hand, as if whispering to the lowered Buddha, and the Iron Buddha seemed to have seen an old friend who had been away for a long time. Four years later, in 1938, the Iron Buddha was melted into molten iron to make artillery shells that were fired at the Japanese. You lowered your head with compassion, and I was gentle and speechless. The silence was like a dialogue, and the gaze has lasted for a thousand years.
