My first stop in Fujian was Zhangzhou, and I was completely captivated. The prices here are affordable, and the cultural and scenic beauty rivals Xiamen and Quanzhou. While Zhangzhou is still relatively under the radar, I highly recommend a visit; you won't be disappointed. 🚶 Zhangzhou 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary If you have 2-3 days, you can slowly experience Zhangzhou's beauty, history, and culture: 🟡 Day 1 Zhangzhou Ancient City → Zhangzhou Three Museums → Purple Flower Sea Ferris Wheel → Nanshan Bridge 1️⃣ Zhangzhou Ancient City Spend half a day walking the ancient city's City Walk. The white walls and red tiles are very distinctive. The "Zhangzhou" characters on the Confucian Temple's exterior are worth a look. The old streets and memorial archways of Hong Kong Road and Taiwan Road are well-preserved. 2️⃣ Zhangzhou's Three Museums The Zhangzhou Museum, Zhangzhou Art Museum, and Zhangzhou City Exhibition Hall are all located in one location, making it the perfect place to explore Zhangzhou. 3️⃣ Purple Flower Sea Ferris Wheel This spring-only purple flower sea, with the Ferris wheel in the background, looks like a cartoon. The ancient bridge, the river, and the night view are absolutely stunning. 🟡 Day 2: Qishouyan Temple → Zeng's Fanzilou → Former Site of Tianyi General Administration → West Lake Ecological Park 5️⃣ Qishouyan Temple This is a little-known temple that many locals haven't visited. The bronze hall is stunning, and the entire temple is filled with a Zen-like beauty. 🎐 (I've written a detailed guide before.) 6️⃣ Zeng's Fanzilou This Minnan folk house, over a century old, blends Chinese and Western styles. It took Zeng and his son over a decade to build, using materials shipped from Southeast Asia. It's quite unique. 7️⃣ Former Site of Tianyi General Administration Founded by overseas Chinese, it's said to be China's first private post office. 🏣 Currently under renovation, only the outer perimeter can be visited. 8️⃣ West Lake Ecological Park West Lake, one of Zhangzhou's five lakes and four seas, offers stunning night views. Enjoy a stroll here. If you have more than four days, Dongshan Island, Volcano Island, and the Nanjing Tulou are also worth a visit. 🥘 My accommodation and food recommendations I recommend staying near Zhangzhou Old Town, as it's close to various attractions. Zhangzhou snacks are incredibly delicious and affordable. If you only have half a day in Zhangzhou, then go for a walk in the ancient city, sit on the street to eat a dessert, and watch people coming and going. I recommend two places to visit. Figure 1, Shixing South Road (formerly known as Xinfu Road) is the only century-old stone slab road in the ancient city of Zhangzhou. I like this kind of original stone slab road very much. In my memory, when I was a child, Zhangzhou was full of such stone slab roads, and most of them were paved and renovated later. Figures 2 and 3, old streets, churches, and snack bars. Pay attention to the ground. This is the renovated ground. Although it is also made of granite, it is something made by machines at a glance, and it has no temperature. Figures 4 to 7, two very beautiful archways. (Real cultural relics, not newly built now.) National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit: "Shangshu Tanhua" and "Sanshi Zai Er" Stone Archway. This is a pair of parallel stone archways, which is one of the iconic buildings in the ancient city of Zhangzhou. These two stone archways were built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty to commemorate two Jinshi from Zhangzhou, namely Shangshu Tanhua Lin Hong and Sanshi Zaier Lin Chong. Lin Hong was a Jinshi in the 18th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1590), Tanhua, and later served as the Minister of Personnel. He is the only Tanhua in the history of Zhangzhou. Lin Chong was a Jinshi in the 36th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1608), and later served as the Minister of the Ministry of Revenue. He is the only Sanshi in the history of Zhangzhou, that is, his grandfather, father, and himself have served as prime ministers. These two stone archways are carved from granite, about 10 meters high and 6 meters wide. Recommend this dessert shop in the old street: Gu Zaowei Pangjie Lotus Seed Balls.
