Heshun Ancient Town

8.1
4.4/5
6.5k reviews
Heshun Ancient Town is located southwest of Tengchong city, a borderland ancient town with over 600 years of history. Originally settled by military households guarding the frontier, the village was named "Heshun" (meaning "river follows") due to a small river encircling it. Later, locals refined the name to its current form, inspired by the phrase "scholars harmonious, people compliant." As Yunnan's renowned hometown of overseas Chinese and a key caravan hub on the Southwest Silk Road, generations of ancestors traveled to Myanmar for trade—their descendants now spread across more than ten countries and regions. Here, traditional central plains family values, borderland customs, and Western influences brought back from Southeast Asia blend seamlessly in the alleyways, making the entire town resemble an open-air museum of Sino-Western architectural fusion. The ancient town rises gradually along the mountain facing the flatland, with ancestral halls, memorial archways, and old residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties spreading across the slopes. Clan ancestral halls like the Cun and Liu family halls line the alleys—the Liu ancestral hall stands by a stream, housing a teahouse where visitors can sit and enjoy hot tea brewed with Longtan spring water and chestnut charcoal fire. The curved building dwelling museum gets its name from structures following the winding lanes, featuring three courtyards with ingenious East-meets-West designs; the TV series "Beijing Love Story" filmed scenes here. Crossing Shuanghong Bridge leads to a hillside library founded in the late 1920s by overseas Chinese from Myanmar, still serving locals with its 100,000-volume collection today. Ai Siqi's former residence, the Jade King's house, Zhongtian Temple, Wenchang Palace, and the Sino-Myanmar Anti-Japanese War Museum each hold unique histories worth exploring in depth. A clear stream winds around the village, with weeping willows brushing the banks. Along the river stand several laundry pavilions built successively since the Guangxu era of the Qing dynasty—a thoughtful gesture from men traveling abroad to their families back home, providing shelter for women washing clothes by the river. This earned them the poetic name "wifeloving pavilions." Watching locals pound laundry and chat by these pavilions offers a deeper taste of the ancient town's daily life than hurried checkins. The lanes of Heshun gather shops preserving old crafts like shadow puppetry, rattan weaving, and traditional papermaking, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Heshun takes its food seriously: the local specialty "Dajiu Jia" (literally "life-saving dish") is actually stir-fried rice cakes, thinly sliced and cooked with eggs, ham, and pickled vegetables—oily, fragrant, and named after a legend involving an exiled emperor. The pine pollen cakes from old street-side shops, made with pine pollen and red beans, are delicately sweet and soft. Sweet "Tounao," slow-cooked earthen pot stews, and the traditional banquet "Sandishui" served only for guests are all worth saving room for. The ancient town is sizable—too big to explore in one day—so consider staying at an inn converted from an old residence, many of which retain their original two- or three-courtyard layouts. Wake up naturally, enjoy a bowl of Dajiu Jia at the town entrance, then bask in the sun by the riverside laundry pavilion, adjusting to the rhythm of Heshun life.Tengchong · 3.6km from downtown

Tengchong Beihai Wetland National AAAA-level attraction is located 12.5km northeast of Tengchong City, Yunnan Province. It is the only volcanic barrier lake floating carpet wetland in China. The attraction is surrounded by mountains. It is a subtropical volcanic rock barrier lake formed by the eruption of Cenozoic volcanoes 600,000 years ago. The nutrient-rich volcanic ash has nurtured a large area of meadows floating on the water, forming a colorful giant floating carpet on the water. The wetland is famous for its biodiversity due to its three-dimensional ecosystem composed of alpine forests, floating carpets on the water surface and barrier lakes. It is known as the "Kidney of the Earth" and "Gene Bank of Wetland Species". More than 300 years ago, Xu Xiake, a traveler in the Ming Dynasty, visited here in person. In his "Yunnan Travel Diary", he left a description of the magical landscape of Beihai Wetland: "The lake is as large as a thousand acres, with green weeds in the middle, and the bottom is like floating grass. There are also streams running through it, but they cannot rise." The altitude here is 1,750 meters, with negative oxygen ions as high as 16,000/cubic centimeter, and PM2.5 less than 10 all year round. It is a world-recognized longevity and livable altitude zone. It is a good place for you to escape the heat and cold, enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh oxygen, and have a good vacation. You can take a small boat and bamboo raft to roam in the water, feel the company of fish, shrimps and birds, the breeze is gentle, the water is calm, and you are at ease. Here you can experience grass rafts, stepping on grass, stepping on fish, grilling fish, etc., and enjoy the fun of nature. There is a floating water plank road here, allowing you to get closer to many precious birds and exotic flowers and plants in the wetland, including the blue-headed duck known as the "giant panda among birds", the "giant panda among plants" Brasenia schrenkiana and hundreds of other rare animals and plants, and experience the vivid fun of the natural classroom. Here, you can experience the unique four-season experience of "appreciating the romance of irises in spring", "enjoying the coolness of the sea of clouds in summer", "shooting the colorful sea of flowers in autumn", and "watching the flock of migratory birds in winter", and enjoy the beautiful encounter between the mountains and the sea in the Beihai Wetland.Tengchong · 12.7km from downtown

Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark is the region with the largest scale, most complete preservation, concentrated distribution, and comprehensive types of volcanic landforms in Tengchong. It showcases diverse volcanic activities and records a complete volcanic history spanning millions of years. The attraction features complete volcanic types, recent eruption periods, abundant species, and unique views. It serves as a comprehensive national geopark integrating volcanic sightseeing, outdoor leisure, environmental wellness, geological research, and science education. In 2016, as a key component of the Volcanic Hot Spring Tourism Area, it was rated as a national 5A-level attraction. Within the attraction, Dakongshan, Xiaokongshan of Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark, and Heikongshan are aligned in a row. Except for the volcanic cones, all are covered by overflow lava from volcanic eruptions, surrounded by typical volcanic geological landscapes. Visitors can hike to the crater and enjoy panoramic views of vast lava flows and platforms from the summit of Dakongshan. Alternatively, they can take a hot air balloon ride or a powered delta wing for an aerial view of the volcanoes. Nearby, Xiaokongshan of Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark is equally spectacular with its perfectly round crater. Walking around the crater symbolizes "a turn of good fortune." Upon entering the attraction's main gate, you'll find the Tengchong Volcanic Geology Museum on your right. This museum focuses on volcanic geology education, showcasing the distribution of interstellar, global, and Tengchong volcanoes through interactive exhibits, specimen displays, and multimedia presentations. At the foot of Xiaokong Mountain, there's also a Volcanic Science Experience Center – an educational theme park that combines scientific knowledge with entertainment activities. The hot air balloon ride club may close early or suspend operations due to weather or air currents. Those with a fear of heights or special conditions are not recommended to participate. Separate bookings are required for hot air balloon rides, powered trikes, and horseback riding.Tengchong · 21.6km from downtown

Gudong Town is located in the northern part of Tengchong County and serves as the economic, cultural, and commercial center of northern Tengchong, earning it the reputation as the "Key Town of Northern Tengchong." A 40 km drive from Tengchong County will take you to Yinxing Village in Gudong Town. With the rise of self-drive tourism, Jiangdong Yinxing Village is poised to become another new attraction in Tengchong. Mid-November to early December is the best viewing period for the ginkgo trees. The ginkgo trees in Jiangdong Village are not only ancient and naturally clustered, but also uniquely integrated with the village in a "village within the forest, forest within the village" harmony. Local houses are scattered around open spaces, surrounded by ginkgo trees of all sizes in front and behind, creating a scene of "golden carpets" when visiting this ancient ginkgo village. In recent years, villagers have continued cultivating young ginkgo trees, totaling about 33,000 across over 1,000 acres—likely one of Yunnan's largest, most concentrated, and oldest ginkgo forests discovered to date. These ancient trees stand quietly majestic, hidden among mountain ranges and revealed through the village's rustic charm.Tengchong · 31.6km from downtown

Dongshan Grassland

4.5/5
225 reviews
Dongshan Grassland is a hidden alpine meadow landscape nestled along mountain ridges, untouched by excessive human modification. Here, undulating slopes dance with shifting clouds and sunlight, while the expansive 2,200m elevation offers panoramic views of distant mountain waves stretching toward the horizon. This creates one of western Yunnan's rare three-dimensional grassland vistas. Winding up along County Road 193, the grasslands grow increasingly picturesque. Hikers love exploring the narrow trails trodden by livestock, discovering wild charm among irises and lichen-covered boulders. Photographers often wait to capture the morning mist rising from valleys or the silhouettes of herders guiding horses home at dusk. Scattered across the grassland are natural ponds reflecting drifting clouds and birds in flight—summer brings brief visits from black-necked cranes. From May to August, the meadows transform into a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers like asters and gentians, while after September, they turn into a golden carpet. Local villagers maintain traditional herding practices—if you come across their wooden hay-drying racks, take a moment to hear their modern take on the pastoral scene described in the ancient verse, "The grass bends low in the wind, revealing cattle and sheep." At the edge of the grassland, remnants of the ancient Tea Horse Road hide in plain sight, with uneven hoofprints on stone slabs whispering tales of caravan traders from centuries past. The charm of Dongshan Grassland lies in its primal sense of freedom and fresh air. Spread out a picnic blanket and listen to the chime of grazing bells, or wrap yourself in a blanket while waiting for a starry plateau night—time seems to flow much slower here than in the city.Tengchong · 6.9km from downtown

The Gaoligong Mountains are located on the west bank of the Nu River and form an important part of the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage Site. "Gaoligong" derives from the transliteration of a Jingpo ethnic family name "Gaoli," with "gong" meaning "mountain" in the Jingpo language—thus, "the mountain of the Gaoli family." Stretching from north to south, the Gaoligong Mountains span Gongshan, Fugong, and Lushui counties in Nujiang Prefecture, as well as Tengchong County and Longyang District in Baoshan City. Gaoligong Mountains National Nature Reserve is home to a variety of rare wildlife and plants, serving as the origin of Yunnan's eight famous flowers. Within the reserve, a giant rhododendron tree, renowned as the "King of Rhododendrons in the World," blooms over 40,000 flowers annually, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Additionally, the Gaoligong Mountains, dotted with cascading waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and alpine lakes, also feature volcanic hot springs, making it a paradise for photographers and hikers with its stunning scenery.Tengchong · 60.1km from downtown

Tengchong Dieshui River Scenic Area is a natural ecological attraction featuring cascading waterfalls and volcanic geological landscapes. Named after the river's multi-tiered falls formed as it flows through volcanic rock terraces, the layered water cascades create a harmonious landscape painting of movement and stillness, complemented by lush surrounding vegetation. Tengchong Dieshui River Scenic Area showcases remarkable geological wonders. Visitors can walk along the boardwalk to observe the interaction between volcanic rock formations and waterfalls up close—water carves varying depths of gullies into black basalt, while mist creates miniature rainbows in sunlight. The trail combines scenic views with educational elements, featuring interpretive signs that explain how millions of years of geological activity shaped these unique landscapes. Beyond natural exploration, Tengchong Dieshui River Scenic Area incorporates local cultural elements. The viewing platform by the waterfall offers panoramic views of Tengchong's rural landscape, where local villagers often work in the fields during spring and fall, presenting an authentic farming scene. The small cultural exhibition hall within the attraction displays intangible cultural heritage crafts like Tengchong shadow puppets and oil-paper umbrellas. Visitors can participate in simple hands-on activities to experience the delicate preservation of borderland culture. For photography enthusiasts, the Tengchong Dieshui River Scenic Area holds special charm during early mornings or after rainfall. The misty atmosphere creates striking contrasts between the waterfall and volcanic rock textures, making it an ideal setting to capture natural light and shadow. The refreshment break area at the scenic area's exit offers Tengchong specialties like Leixiang tea and pea flour porridge, adding flavorful memories to your visit. Tengchong Dieshui River Scenic Area doesn't pursue grand narratives. Instead, it weaves together geological grandeur with cultural vibrancy, offering visitors a lighthearted nature experience that delights both the eyes and the soul. Perfect for travelers who prefer a slower pace and seek to discover subtle beauty within mountain and water landscapes.Tengchong · 1.4km from downtown

Daying River runs through Tengchong from north to south and encounters the huge fault cliff when flowing through the west of Tengchong County. The water falls from the 46-meter (151-foot) cliff to the deep pool, and the water seems to be folded in two. The Dieshuihe Waterfall was named after this. Above the waterfall stand three peaks. Between the peaks is a stone bridge stretching across the river, called Taiji Bridge, built during the period of the Warlord Era. Beside the bridge is a stone pavilion engraved with the characters "Guan Pu" (Viewing the Waterfall) on the plaque, hence the name, Guan Pu Pavilion.Tengchong · 1.4km from downtown

Rehai Boiling Pot is a local specialty and the only geothermal scenic area in China. It's very unique and highly recommended. However, some attractions are under renovation, so the scenery is still somewhat lacking.

I visited Heshun Ancient Town last October. The weather was great; it was even warm enough to wear short sleeves on hot days. Occasional rain was brief, and most importantly, there were no mosquitoes by then. I stayed in a guesthouse inside the ancient town. The guesthouse owner would tell me the nearest taxi stand, making it quite convenient to get around the town. The ancient town is quite large, and there are performances on holidays; it's quite nice to explore.

The wetland is China's only volcanic barrier lake floating carpet type wetland, surrounded by mountains, with beautiful scenery and large meadows floating on the water. Walking along the wooden boardwalk is very comfortable due to its high altitude (1750m) and high negative oxygen ion content, but migratory birds were not observed much.

The scenic area is nice, but personally, I feel the shuttle bus is pointless. It replaces a section of scenic flat road, making the package ticket a waste. The real challenge is the mountain trails; the high altitude makes climbing them especially strenuous.

From late November to early December, Ginkgo Village transforms into a golden wonderland, a dreamlike world for photographers. I was fortunate enough to witness this beauty in mid-November. Almost every household in the village grows ginkgo trees, with the central square being particularly spectacular, especially the King Ginkgo, a witness to the passage of time. In the rustic courtyards, sitting under the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, sunlight filtering through the golden leaves, enjoying ginkgo chicken soup, one can feel the warmth of the countryside. A young villager on a small bicycle took us through every corner of the village, telling us its stories.

What a wonderful day! The tour guide was incredibly warm and kind. Even traveling alone, I didn't feel lonely. The tour was very well-prepared; they took photos for me while we walked and gave me edible wild fruits and medicinal herbs. The meals were also delicious and beautifully presented. Highly recommended!

The Dieshui River waterfall cascades like a ribbon, its roar echoing through the valleys, its mist forming rainbows. Hidden within the city, yet possessing the grandeur of the mountains and fields. Gazing at the volcanic cliffs, listening to the roar of the flowing water, one's heart finds peace in the sound of the waves, fully enjoying the wonders of nature.

This attraction is very close to Tengchong city center, but the entrance shown on Gaode Maps is incorrect; it's actually across the street. To be honest, it's only worth about 10 yuan. It's not very big; the main attraction is the Dieshuihe Waterfall. You can visit the park later to relax. Actually, most of the attractions in Tengchong are just average; I feel Gaoligong Mountain and the hot springs are the most unique.
