Berat Castle

4.9/5
13 reviews
Berat Castle stands majestically on a rocky hill beside the ancient city of Berat, Albania. Upon reaching the castle, you are greeted with a wide view, offering a commanding perspective of the Osum River and the layers of white old houses on both banks. It once housed many Byzantine-style Orthodox churches. Today, surviving ones like the Church of the Holy Trinity can still be visited, with some containing medieval frescoes and iconostases. The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos has been converted into the Onufri Iconographic Museum, exhibiting icon paintings by the representative 16th-century Albanian painter Onufri and his followers, serving as a window into local religious art. It also retains ruins of Ottoman-era mosques. Traces of different eras coexist here, with history layered upon this hill. Unlike many castles that are reduced to mere ruins, local families still reside here today. Residential houses and courtyards are scattered along the cobblestone paths, and strolling through it feels like entering a living hilltop village.Berat · 295m from downtown

Pyramid of Tirana

38 reviews
The Pyramid of Tirana is a landmark building in the capital of Albania. Originally a museum dedicated to former Albanian leader Enver Hoxha, it has served as a conference center and a television studio over the decades. It also sat abandoned for a long time, with its exterior walls covered in graffiti. Its sloping facade, however, became a place for local youth to climb and play. After a comprehensive renovation, this old building has been revitalized. Its interior has been transformed into TUMO, a creative technology education center for teenagers, offering courses and activities focused on programming, robotics, and art. The bright, colorful space adds a sense of lightness to the originally heavy concrete shell. One of its sloping sides has been converted into a series of steps, allowing people to walk all the way to the top of the building to overlook the city view, continuing the building's unique climbable appeal. Not far in front of it hangs a Peace Bell, cast from shell casings collected during the social unrest of the late 1990s to commemorate those who lost their lives. A bell and a building perfectly encapsulate the changes this city has undergone over the decades.Tirana · 69.1km from Berat
Blue Eye

Blue Eye

5.9

Blue Eye is a natural karst spring in southern Albania, located in the mountains between the cities of Saranda and Gjirokastër. It is the source of the local Bistricë River, from which the water flows to the Ionian Sea south of Saranda. Looking down from the viewing platform above, the outer ring of water is bright and light blue, while the center is deep blue, almost black, making the entire water surface look like a deep blue eye gazing at the sky. The spring water constantly surges up from an underground cave; as you approach, you can hear the continuous roar of the water. The water is so clear that you can see dozens of meters deep. The water temperature is icy cold year-round, and a touch will make you shiver. It is precisely because of the low temperature and lack of impurities that the water color appears exceptionally rich and transparent. The surrounding area is designated as a nature reserve, characterized by oak and sycamore forests. Walking along the forest trail, you are accompanied by dense shade and the sound of water, making it much cooler than the surrounding lowlands.Saranda · 90.2km from Berat
Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle

5.1
Rozafa Castle stands on a rocky hill southwest of the city of Shkodra, with the confluence of the Buna River and the Drin at its feet, adjacent to the southern end of Shkodra Lake. Today, it still retains the ruins of a 13th-century church, which was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman siege, with traces of different eras layered upon each other and clearly visible. Inside, there is a small museum displaying historical artifacts and archaeological finds unearthed locally, among which the Rozafa statue, half-embedded in the wall, is particularly eye-catching. You can reach it by walking along the winding mountain road from the old town of Shkodra. Standing at the top, you can take in the panoramic view of the old town of Shkodra, the Buna River, and the distant Shkodra Lake. On clear days, you can even see the rolling Albanian Alps to the north. At dusk, the setting sun paints the river and the rooftops of the old town in gold, a time when many tourists prefer to linger.Albania · Shkodra
Castle of Kruja

Castle of Kruja

5.0/5
3 reviews
Kruje Castle is located in central Albania and was the core stronghold of the national hero Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. It can be reached by car from the capital, Tirana, or by bus which departs every hour.   The must-visit Skanderbeg Museum in the castle recreates the epic battle with a three-dimensional sand table and weapons displays. The top-floor observation deck overlooks the entire Kruje Valley. On the east side, there is a folk museum that was transformed from a 15th-century caravan station, displaying traditional looms and bronze crafts. The weekly open-air market at the foot of the castle still continues the trade tradition of the Ottoman era, and handmade wool blankets and pottery are worth buying.   It is recommended to wear non-slip shoes to climb the gravel slope and prepare plenty of drinking water in summer. In winter, some outdoor areas may be temporarily closed due to snow. It is recommended to check the local tourism bureau's homepage for updates before traveling. Parking spaces are limited, so it is recommended to arrive before 10 am during peak season.Kruje · 89.7km from Berat

Lake Shkodër in Albania is absolutely stunning! 💖 From afar, it looks like a giant emerald embedded in the earth. 💎 Every snapshot is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese ink painting. The lake's mirror-like surface in the early morning, paired with little red flags fluttering in the wind, makes for incredibly photogenic shots. The distant mountains appear and disappear in the mist, creating an ethereal atmosphere! ☁️ 📷 Best Photo Poses: ✔️ Posing in front of the little flags is a must! 200% success rate! 📸 ✔️ Bring a telephoto lens to photograph the birds; they're all master posers! 🦆

The pyramid in Tirana is a very strange building. It was built during the Hoxha government. Now the building has been abandoned, but it has become a famous tourist attraction because the slope of the building is about 50 degrees, which is a huge slide, attracting many citizens to come and play, which is really ironic.

It is about an hour's drive from the capital, Tirana. On the way to the castle, there is an Old Bazaar lined with souvenir shops selling traditional embroidery and handicrafts, so those who love miscellaneous goods will definitely be distracted! Inside Kruja Castle is a museum where you can see the history of Albania. The view from the terrace is also amazing, so be sure to visit.
