Reviews: Istanbul City Highlights, Blue Mosque & Grand Bazaar and more. Half Day Guided Small Group

It was great! We had a half-day layover and did a quick tour of Istanbul. Xiaoshan is very familiar with Istanbul and speaks some Chinese, so communication was easy. However, the tour was in English. For communication, if you don't have WhatsApp, it's best to call in advance. Adding someone on WeChat is even better, just in case you have trouble finding them. Also, the paid tour doesn't include admission to the Hagia Sophia Mosque, so it's best to have the money ready. I think it's definitely worth going inside. The mosque has strict rules; women need to bring their own scarves, as the 10 rupees ones at the entrance are too cheap. It's the only building where a church and mosque coexist, and the murals will be amazing once they're restored. The Blue Mosque is amazing, but it's very difficult to take a photo without people inside. If you want to see the beautiful view of the interior bathed in direct sunlight, don't choose a morning tour.

We started our trip at 9.00am and ended at around 4.30pm. Our guide, Mr Baki contacted us to confirm the meeting point and time. He also recommended and brought us to a local restaurant for lunch and the food prices were not too high. Some memorable moments include learning about the history and influence of the Romans and Ottomans at the Sultanamet Square, the Blue Mosque, the cable car ride station with a splendid view of the town, and the private boat ride along the Golden Horn. We were brought to places selling Turkish carpets and ornaments in the morning and local snacks in the afternoon. Suitable tour for those seeking such goods. We did not buy any as we wanted to do it later in their shopping mall.

A morning tour is highly recommended. It's not yet so hot and much less crowded, so you can get in everywhere quickly. The explanations for the Blue Mosque were excellent, and the entrance to the Basilica Cistern (Sunken Palace) was available for the extra price (800 TL/person) that TUI had quoted. And it was definitely worth it! It's simply breathtakingly beautiful! The explanation of the Hagia Sophia felt a bit too brief. At the same time, the former Hippodrome was a new addition to the itinerary.
