This was my first time using an e-SIM like this, and it was incredibly convenient! I activated it before leaving my home country, and upon arrival in China, the SIM card found a signal immediately. Connection in China and Japan has always been excellent, even in remote locations. The only downside: to use apps that aren't available in China (TT, inst, etc.), you'll need a VPN, even if you're using the same SIM card in Japan, for example. Data traffic apparently goes through Chinese providers. I bought a 30GB plan for 30 days during a 13-day trip, and in total, I only used 12GB, but this unlimited plan still seemed the best value to me.
