Although it was a layover, the timing was manageable. I had a quick meal at Kunming airport and arrived in Xishuangbanna in the afternoon. The hotel was in Gaozhuang, where there's a night market where you can buy small goods at reasonable prices. The hotel itself was just average; there are many guesthouses there, and in the off-season, prices are generally around 150-200 yuan. The local Yunnan rice noodles were quite good, cheap and delicious. There's a restaurant nearby called Manfeilong Roasted Chicken, which was pretty good. Local restaurants are inexpensive and offer generous portions. Bananas, pineapples, mangoes, and jackfruit were all cheap, and the tamarind and small loquats with mango were tasty. In Xishuangbanna, I learned about the culture and history of Pu'er tea and bought a lot. The prices and quality were much better than in Beijing. Prices ranged from tens to hundreds or even thousands of yuan, with a wide variety that could be confusing; I recommend buying from larger stores. For sightseeing, I think the Tropical Botanical Garden, Ganlanba, and Manting Park are worth visiting, as you can experience the Dai and Jinuo ethnic cultures and the leisurely lifestyle of the Xishuangbanna people. If you're getting older, this is a great place to relax.
