La Boca

4.1/5
100 reviews
La Boca is an old neighborhood next to the port of Buenos Aires. In the late 19th century, large numbers of Italian and Spanish immigrants settled here, making a living as port stevedores and shipbuilders. They used leftover ship paint to paint their corrugated iron shacks, accidentally creating the colorful street view seen today. The heart of the neighborhood is a pedestrian street called Caminito, which has been turned into an open-air museum. The high-saturation colored houses on both sides are clustered, and the walls are covered with murals and reliefs by local artists. Tango dancers often perform impromptu shows along the street. La Boca is considered one of the important birthplaces of tango, and the name of Caminito itself is taken from a tango song of the same name. The neighborhood also carries a rich football culture. The home stadium ofArgentine football club Boca Juniors, Estadio Alberto J Armando, is nearby, where Maradona once played wearing the blue and gold jersey. A team museum is located next to the stadium, displaying collections such as trophies and jerseys from over the years.Argentina · Buenos Aires

The obelisk stands in the Plaza de la República and is one of the city's iconic landmarks. In 1936, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires, Argentine modernist architect Alberto Prebisch designed this monument, using the Luxor Obelisk in Egypt as a prototype. The monument is approx. 67.5 m high, features a reinforced concrete structure, and is clad in white stone from Cordoba, with geometric lines throughout. The site it occupies has a unique historical background—it was once the location of the Church of St. Nicholas, where the Argentine flag was first raised in Buenos Aires. Inside the monument, there is a 206-step staircase leading to windows on all four sides at the top. Its surroundings are also a hub of urban vitality: the Avenida 9 de Julio is known for its width, Corrientes Avenue brings together numerous theaters and restaurants, and multiple subway lines intersect underground. Whether it is citizens celebrating after a sports victory, or street art and public gatherings, this place has always been a central point where people spontaneously gather.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Plaza de Mayo is the main square of Buenos Aires, with a history dating back to the city's founding by the Spanish in 1580. The square was formerly the colonial-era Plaza de la Victoria and Plaza del Fuerte. In 1884, the colonnade separating the two squares was demolished, and they were merged and officially named after the May Revolution of 1810—a revolution that took place on May 25 and marked the beginning of Argentina's path to independence from Spanish colonial rule. In the center of the square stands the Pirámide de Mayo, built in 1811 to commemorate the first anniversary of the May Revolution. It is surrounded by several iconic buildings: the pink Casa Rosada at the east end, and the colonial-era Cabildo at the west end, which is now a museum displaying historical artifacts from the May Revolution; to the north is theBuenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. These buildings, with their diverse yet harmonious architectural styles, make the square feel like an open-air history museum.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Puerto Madero

Puerto Madero is a very modern waterfront neighborhood in Buenos Aires, converted from an old port dating back to the late 19th century. This area was once one of the earlier ports built in Buenos Aires, but it fell into decline after the port's functions were relocated, until large-scale urban renewal began in the 1990s. The former red-brick warehouses and granaries have been converted into loft apartments, offices, hotels, and restaurants. They stand side-by-side with brand-new glass curtain wall high-rises, and this blend of old and new has become the neighborhood's signature cityscape. A prominent landmark in the port area is the Puente de la Mujer, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, with a shape inspired by a pair of tango dancers. Strolling along the dockside promenade, you can board the ARA Sarmiento frigate moored at the pier to visit and learn about the history of the Argentine Navy. The east side of the port area is adjacent to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, a rare, large-scale natural wetland within Buenos Aires that is home to a large number of birds. In addition, the streets in the port area are all named after prominent women in Argentine history, and there are several cultural venues along the way.Argentina · Buenos Aires

San Telmo is the historic neighborhood of Buenos Aires, preserving a large number of colonial-era buildings and uneven cobblestone streets. The neighborhood is adjacent to Plaza de Mayo. Strolling along the main thoroughfare, Defensa Street, you can see mansions built by wealthy families in the 19th century. This area once declined due to a yellow fever epidemic, but became a center of cultural revival in the 20th century due to the intact preservation of its historic buildings, thus forming its unique present-day appearance, where historical relics and a bohemian atmosphere are intertwined. The heart of the neighborhood is Plaza Dorrego, which features year-round open-air antique stalls and is also a gathering place for impromptu tango performances. The San Telmo Antique Fair, which extends along Defensa Street, is a highly representative open-air market in Buenos Aires, bringing together antiques, handicrafts, and street performers. San Telmo is an old indoor market that retains its original structure. The neighborhood is also dotted with numerous antique shops, old cafes, and tango venues, with colorful murals visible on walls everywhere.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Floralis Generica is a giant kinetic metal sculpture in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, designed and donated by Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano and completed in 2002. The sculpture's Spanish name, "Floralis Genérica," means "representative of all flowers." It is cast from stainless steel and aluminum, stands approx. 23m high, is composed of 6 giant petals, has a total weight of approx. 18 tons, and stands in the center of a reflecting pool with a diameter of approx. 44m. When fully bloomed, the flower reaches a diameter of approx. 32m, and approx. 16m when closed. The design of the Floralis Generica is inspired by the circadian rhythm of flowers in nature—the petals open slowly at dawn and close gradually at dusk, remaining closed during strong winds to protect the petal structure. The Floralis Generica is adjacent to the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, surrounded by lush trees, with the pool reflecting the metallic luster of the petals.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Caminito

Caminito is an iconic pedestrian street in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is a small alley over 100 m long that has been transformed into an open-air street museum. The street is named after the famous tango song of the same name composed by Juan de Dios Filiberto. In the late 1950s, painter Benito Quinquela Martín, who grew up in La Boca, worked with artist friends to redecorate the area to resemble the old immigrant neighborhood. The colorful corrugated iron shacks, clotheslines strung between walls, and relief murals on the walls are all part of the scenery, recreating the old days when Genoese immigrants painted their houses with leftover ship paint. Today, the walls painted in bright yellow, royal blue, and vibrant red remain the stars of tourists' photos, making every snapshot highly photogenic. Tango dancers perform in pairs and musicians play live music here year-round, while painters and artisans set up stalls along the street, continuing the deep connection between La Boca and tango. When you reach the end of the street, keep an eye out for the abandoned train tracks on the ground, which are remnants of the area's early railway era.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Puente de la Mujer spans Dock 3 in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, and is a white rotating pedestrian bridge. It is approx. 170 m long, with a white pylon over 30 m high pointing toward the sky, and cable stays suspending the bridge deck like harp strings. The towering pylon and the extended bridge deck lean toward and away from each other, resembling a dancer frozen in an embrace. It can also rotate to open, with the middle section turning horizontally to clear a path for passing vessels. Strolling across the bridge, you will see the dockside scenery and rows of modern buildings on one side, while not far away, the old sailing ship Sarmiento, now a museum, is moored. You can often see love locks placed by couples on the railings. After nightfall, the lights come on, and the white pylon and cables are reflected on the water, making it a popular time for tourists and locals to take photos.Argentina · Buenos Aires

Plaza General San Martín is located in the Retiro district of Buenos Aires. Shaded by trees and featuring undulating terrain, it is a rare, tranquil oasis in the bustling city center. The bronze equestrian statue in the center is the focal point, created by French sculptor Louis-Joseph Daumas. The general's pose, reining in his horse, complements the bronze reliefs depicting war scenes around the base, and it is also a popular spot for tourists to take photos. On the side facing Avenida del Libertador stands the Malvinas War Memorial. The names of the fallen are engraved on several black marble slabs, creating a solemn atmosphere where citizens often come to lay flowers. On one side is a gentle slope covered in grass, from which you can see the Torre Monumental standing across the street. On the other side, ancient trees provide shade, with ombú and jacaranda trees dotting the area, surrounded by historic buildings of various styles, such as the Edificio Kavanagh and the Palacio Paz.Argentina · Buenos Aires

La Boca is a very vibrant and colorful area in Buenos Aires. it is an area with colorful houses, shops and restaurants. be sure to go during the day and do not wear fancy clothing or jewelries and not to cross over to Baraccas due to safety reason. otherwise it is a nice stroll and walk through city.

Avenida 9 de Julio, like a majestic urban artery, runs through the heart of Buenos Aires. With 14 lanes running in parallel, it is one of the widest streets in the world, demonstrating Argentina's heroic spirit. The towering obelisk stands in the center, piercing the sky. It is not only a city landmark, but also engraved with the glory of national independence. On both sides of the avenue, classical buildings from the colonial period stand side by side with modern skyscrapers, where European style and South American enthusiasm blend together. The shuttling traffic and pedestrians give the street endless vitality; when night falls and the lights come on, neon lights and car lights interweave into a river of light, and the obelisk is more solemn and majestic under the light. This is not only a major transportation route, but also a vivid epitome of the symbiosis of Argentine history and modernity, carrying the city's memory and future.

Every city in Argentina has a city flower. When the original manuscripts were collected, a famous American artist voluntarily donated more than 2 million US dollars to build this steel flower. The flower is 23 meters high and has a diameter of 16 meters when closed and 32 meters when open. The flower is composed of 6 large petals and weighs 18 tons in total. It is tilted at 70 degrees. The base of the flower is a pool with a diameter of 44 meters.

It seems like many heroes are named San Martín. This is another memorial square named after San Martín. It's not very big, and there aren't many people during the day. There aren't many lighting effects at night either. It's just average. You can take a look when you pass by, but don't make a special effort to see it.
