Ohori Park features a unique waterscape formed by its expansive lake, small islands scattered throughout, and the stone bridges that connect them. The lake was originally the moat of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. The park opened in 1929, and the lake covers approx. half of the park's area. Nakanoshima Island is connected by several bridges, and the Ukimido Hall on the island is a representative view. The walking path around the lake is approx. 2 km long, making it suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. Boat rental facilities are available by the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the lakeshore and islands from the water. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lake, while in winter, water birds often stop by. The park also features a Japanese garden, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and a Noh theater. The Japanese garden showcases traditional styles with its pond, artificial hills, dry landscape (karesansui), and tea house, offering changing scenery throughout the seasons; the Fukuoka Art Museum houses works by artists such as Dalí, Miró, and Chagall, as well as a collection of ancient Japanese art; and the Noh theater is used for traditional performances such as Noh and Kyogen. In addition, the park has a children's play area, providing leisure space for visitors of all ages.Fukuoka · 2.4km from downtown

Kushida Shrine

Kushida Shrine has been an important guardian shrine for the Hakata area since ancient times, and locals affectionately call it "Kushida-san." The shrine is closely linked to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every July, a tradition spanning hundreds of years that has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The "Oiyama" race held on the early morning of July 15 is a key part of the festival, where teams carry Yamakasa floats weighing approx. 1 ton and run along a route of approx. 5 km, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The shrine grounds feature a permanent display of ornate decorative Yamakasa floats, standing over 10m tall, whose intricate decorations showcase traditional craftsmanship and serve as a representative view. Near the entrance stands the Kushida Ginkgo tree, said to be over 1,000 years old, with lush foliage that, together with the ancient shrine buildings, evokes a profound sense of history. In early spring, the Kawazu cherry blossoms on the grounds bloom, adding a soft spring touch to the shrine. Whether you are admiring traditional architecture, learning about Hakata customs, or experiencing local festival culture, this place showcases distinct regional characteristics.Fukuoka · 859m from downtown

728 reviews
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, and is an important center for Tenmangu shrines across Japan. Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu due to political strife during the Heian period and passed away there. He was later revered as the deity of learning and culture, making this a long-standing place of worship for those praying for academic success and success in exams. Upon entering the grounds, the Shinji-ike Pond and the three arched bridges spanning it form an iconic view. The pond is named for its resemblance to the character for "heart," and the three bridges symbolize the past, present, and future, respectively. Several stone statues of reclining sacred oxen are scattered throughout the grounds, reflecting the traditional connection between the ox and Sugawara no Michizane. The Tobiume (Flying Plum Tree) beside the main hall carries the legend of a plum tree that flew here from Kyoto in a single night. It is the first to bloom each year, adding vitality to the spring. The garden is planted with approx. 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees, creating a particularly rich landscape during the blooming season, and you can also enjoy irises in early summer. Traditional festivals and cultural events are also preserved here. The Usokae ritual held every January involves exchanging wooden bird carvings to express wishes, and the Kyokusui no En (Winding Stream Banquet) is held on the first Sunday of March, where participants dressed in Heian-period attire recite poems by the flowing water, recreating the elegance of ancient banquets. After your visit, you can stroll along the approach and taste Umegae Mochi, a grilled rice cake with a crispy exterior and red bean filling, to experience the local traditional food culture.Dazaifu · 14.5km from Fukuoka

Since the beginning of the Meiji era, Moji Port has been an important international trade port in Japan. It is located in Kyushu, connected to Honshu Island, and faces the Chinese mainland. Ships from Europe, America, Asia and Japan are busy here every day. Noisy, lively. With the development of the municipal government, although Mojigang has lost its former scenery, the European-style buildings in the port area still exude a charming charm. After another renovation, while retaining the European style of the original Western-style buildings in Japan, it is plated with the nostalgic atmosphere of the Taisho period in Japan. The European style and nostalgia add radiance and beauty to each other. After the Moji Port nostalgic area, the former bustling port has become a tourist attraction that attracts domestic and foreign tourists today. Shops and restaurants are lined up, and tourists can freely take outdoor photography. The former Osaka Merchant Shipping Company, the former Moji Port Customs and the former Moji Mitsui Club are all very popular tourist historical buildings in Moji Port, which are open for tourists to visit. Walking into these houses, you can taste the Japanese European style a hundred years ago, and learn the gorgeous culture of Mosigang for a hundred years.Kitakyushu City · 65.2km from Fukuoka

The Fukuoka Castle Ruins are located on the west side of the Naka River and on the east side of Ohori Park. This is a nationally designated historical site, and it is also known as "Maizuru City" and "Stone City". Kuroda Nagamasa made great achievements in the battle of Guanyuan, so he was canonized as the lord of 520,000 stone before the building. Starting from Qingchang 50% (AD 1600), Kuroda Nagamasa spent 7 years building the city. The whole city belongs to the large-scale Hirayama Castle. Due to the war and various destructive factors, there are only stone walls left in the city, such as Otemon Gate, Shiomi Ogura, Muli Taibei Residence Nagaya Gate, Honmaru, Ernomaru and Sannomaru. There are Land Arena and Heiwadai Baseball Stadium, as well as Heiwadai Athletics Field, which is famous as the starting point of the Fukuoka International Marathon. It is said that the castle did not have a castle tower from the beginning, but it is famous for having three large, medium and small towers and 47 watchtowers. Inside the moat is the sedge, a natural wild vegetation memorial designated by Fukuoka Prefecture, and there is a monument of Manyo Song in the castle. A few days ago, near the Heiwa Billiards Stadium, the remains of the Dazaifu-era State Guest House, the Korokan (Chikushikan), were discovered. Now there are remnants of the main gate and other remnants in the castle, which are open for viewing in the name of Maizuru Park.Fukuoka · 1.8km from downtown

Noko Island is located in the west area of Fukuoka, about 12 kilometers away. It is a small island in Hakata Bay. It has a very long history. It is said that Noko Island has opened a defense station since the Nara period. On the island, there are "Nenggu Dream Coffee Garden" and "Nenggu Museum" where you can grow coffee beans by yourself. There are also various restaurants, barbecue huts, etc., as well as a "nostalgic street" full of old city style. Lots of quaint pastries and toys can be found on the street. If you linger and immerse yourself in this, there are also villa rentals and cabins in camping villages on the island, where you can stay for one night. The writer Tan Ichio lived in his old age on Noko Island. The natural park is naturally located at the northern end of Nenggu Island in Hakata Bay, covering an area of about 150,000 square meters. In spring, cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers bloom here; in summer, the oiran is sunflower; in autumn, the most beautiful season of the year, a large number of cosmos blooms, decorating the island like a paradise; in winter, narcissus adds to the desolate environment. A touch of bright color. Among them, rapeseed flowers and cosmos are particularly famous, and they are known as "superb scenery" against the blue sea and blue sky of Hakata Bay.Fukuoka · 9.5km from downtown

This shrine is dedicated to the gods of Sokotsutsuo-no-kami, Nakatsutsuo-no-kami and Uwatsutsuo-no-kami and it was officially designated in ancient time as one of the high ranked shrines. It was once admired as the greatest shrine of Chikuzen area (northern part of the present Fukuoka prefecture). The surrounding area was originally a cape at the mouth of Nakagawa River flowing into Hakata Bay. It was worshipped as a tutelary shrine of navigation. The gods were also worshipped as gods of Japanese poem (waka) and ancient famous poet Sogi visited this shrine to pay respect to the god. The straight shaped roof of the main hall of this shrine is one of the specific features of ancient architectural style, very contrastive to the later Buddhist style. The main hall is designated as a national treasure and the copper axe and sword of the shrine are designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.Fukuoka · 1.2km from downtown

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.

Kushida Shrine is a must-visit shrine when you come to Hakata. You must come to see the Gion Yamakasa. Although I didn't come in July, I didn't see the big Yamakasa in the city, but I can see the Yamakasa in Kushida Shrine. Read the introduction According to the legend of the shrine, Kushida Shrine was founded in the first year of Tenpyo Hoji (757) and has been the general guardian of Hakata since ancient times. The Hakata Festival is a representative festival of Fukuoka City and is well-known throughout the country.

Of the castle ruins, nothing remains except the stone foundation. The feudal lord was pragmatic, building only three castle towers: large, medium, and small. Tamon Turret is overgrown with weeds; the other turrets have only their foundation stones left, while others are merely imaginary.

I stopped by Hakozaki Shrine on New Year's Day, January 2nd. There was a New Year's event, so I had fun looking around. I thought it was fun because the signboard that said "Enemy Surrender" was hanging right there. It was easy to get to, as it was about a 5-minute walk from the subway station. However, there's nothing else to see around here besides this shrine, so the downside is that you have to come here to see the New Year.

Sumiyoshi Shrine has been revered by the public since ancient times as the guardian deity of maritime safety and safe travel. There are several small shrines within the shrine grounds, and the "Ryujinja Shrine" that enshrines the god of commerce, entertainment, and learning is particularly popular.
