Daxiang Mountain Grottoes

101 reviews
Daxiang Mountain Grottoes are located on the southwest side of the county seat of Gangu County, Tianshui, approx. 2 km from the county seat. The grottoes in the mountains date back to the Northern Wei Dynasty and are an important grotto site on the Silk Road. It is also said that Gangu is where the Chinese ancestor Fuxi lived, so there are also sights related to Fuxi here. Visitors can explore the grottoes and historical sites, pray for blessings in the temple, and overlook the surrounding scenery from the mountaintop. It is a great place to visit in Tianshui. The Great Buddha Mountain Grottoes are built along the mountain. There is a 1.5 km stone path along the mountain within the scenic area. You can explore it on foot, and most visitors spend approx. 2–3 hours touring the site. The most famous sight on Great Buddha Mountain is the large Buddha statue on the hillside, which is also the origin of the mountain's name. The Buddha statue is approx. 23 m high, carved along the mountain, and is very spectacular. Many visitors come here to worship. Next to the Great Buddha, there is a corridor built along the mountain, connecting many grotto caves, where you can visit the ancient Buddha statues. There is a temple on the mountain with many temple buildings where visitors can pay their respects. There are also structures such as the Fuxi Hometown Stele and Fuxi Temple (Taihao Palace), where you can pay tribute to Fuxi, the ancestor of the Chinese nation. The view from the top of the mountain is very expansive, allowing you to overlook the surrounding scenery and feel refreshed.Gangu · 2km from downtown

10 miles away from Gangu County is Jiangjiazhuang, the hometown of Jiang Wei. Along the winding small pebble road, up the hillside, Jiang Gong Temple is in front of you, only to see the courtyard of the temple, the pine pier stands, and the stone monument of "Jiang Wei's hometown" stands in the west of the courtyard. The statue of Jiang Gong in the temple is burly, and his eyes are suspicious of Weichuan. Passing through the Jiang Gong Temple, on both sides of the Magou, the peaks are stacked on top of each other, and the General Ridge is majestic. Leaving Jiangjunling, come to pay homage to Jiang Wei's tomb. Jiang Wei's tomb is divided into upper and lower layers. From the lower layer to the upper layer, it is necessary to pass through the nine stone steps. "Shitai" means to take the meaning of nine expeditions to the Central Plains. The center of the stone steps is lined with two large seal-shaped characters "Yuanzhi". Jiang Wei's cemetery was surrounded by pines and cypresses, and it was quiet. A tombstone was erected in front of the tomb, which read "The Tomb of General Jiang Wei of the Han Dynasty". Behind the tombstone is a tall tomb, and the entire cemetery coincides with Jiang Wei's life. The tomb is 3.5 meters high, which means that Jiang Wei held an important position under Zhuge Liang when he was 35 years old, and made many military exploits; the diameter of the cemetery is 6.2 meters, which means that Jiang Wei died at the age of 62 and returned to Shu with his righteousness. 1.2 meters, meaning that Jiang Wei was smart and brave when he was 12 years old, and he joined the army with hair. The meaningful tomb of Jiang Wei symbolizes the life of this famous general of the Three Kingdoms who devoted himself to serving the country, galloping the battlefield, and blood-staining the land of Shu.Gangu · 3.9km from downtown

The Daxiangshan Grottoes are one of the eight scenic spots in Gangu. On both sides of the Buddha Cave, there are long corridors built according to the mountain, like a belt. The caves and niches on the corridor are connected, majestic and spectacular. There are 22 existing caves and niches, most of which are nearly square in plan. There are large round arch niches and high altar bases on the main wall, and there are Zen caves for monks to practice. This is the special feature of the Daxiangshan Grottoes, which is also rare in China. The Gangu Buddha is a semi-circular stone-based clay sculpture, 23.3 meters high, 9.5 meters wide at the shoulders, 5.8 meters high at the head, and 6 meters long at the knees. Its shape is tall and majestic, which makes people look up to it. Its cultural characteristics can be regarded as a masterpiece of art that perfectly combines Western decorative sculptures and Chinese freehand sculptures. According to research, the Buddha statues in Gangu can be traced back to the Northern Wei Dynasty, and have gone through four dynasties and more than 300 years.

Daxiang Mountain is located in Gangu County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. It was named after the giant Buddha statue carved on the top of the mountain. The Gangu Giant Buddha is Sakyamuni Buddha. Since Daxiang Mountain was renamed after the giant Buddha, people have been calling it Daxiang Mountain. Because the mountain is shaped like a flag, it is also called Wenqi Mountain.

At the Fuxi Temple in Tianshui, every step you take is like stepping into the weathered texture of time, awakening the slumber of Qin bricks and Han tiles, and hearing the lingering echoes of camel bells from the Silk Road... In front of the Fuxi Temple, the smoke and clouds shroud the faint glow of civilization. Here, history lies beneath your feet, and the divine is before your eyes.

5 stars! A thousand-year-old city hidden in Northwest China, the night view and food are absolutely amazing! A must-visit treasure in Tianshui! The free admission to the ancient city is such a generous offer; I was instantly hooked after exploring it. The ancient residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties are incredibly well-preserved, with exquisite wood and brick carvings that are breathtaking. The courtyard layout of the north and south houses is particularly stunning; stepping inside feels like stepping back in time. Wearing Hanfu for photos is incredibly photogenic, and in the morning when it's less crowded, you can take pictures effortlessly. The vibrant atmosphere of the ancient city is truly captivating! The streets and alleys are filled with Tianshui's signature snacks: spicy and chewy "guagua," refreshing and tangy "jiangshui noodles," and springy "laolao" (a type of noodle). You can't go wrong with any of the small shops; sit down and slurp down a bowl after a long walk—pure bliss! There are also shops selling intangible cultural heritage handicrafts and creative cultural products; you can discover many surprises at a leisurely pace. It's not overly commercialized, allowing for a truly relaxing stroll. And the night view deserves special mention! As dusk settles, red lanterns illuminate the cobblestone streets, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the ancient buildings. Occasionally, you might even catch a street band performance or a Qinqiang opera, adding to the lively yet charming ambiance. The guesthouse we stayed at in the ancient town was incredibly stylish with its retro decor. The owner was warm and attentive, even sharing hidden tourist routes. It was within walking distance of the Fuxi Temple and Yuquan Temple, making it super convenient. The facilities were excellent, and the staff were very attentive. Overall, a fantastic experience! Whether you want to immerse yourself in history and culture or simply enjoy the food and photos, Tianshui Ancient Town is definitely worth a visit. I'll definitely bring my friends back next time! Would you like me to compile a detailed list of "food and photo spots" in the ancient town, highlighting specific shops and the best photo locations?

The scenery is absolutely stunning! The cable car is safe and well-organized, and there are emergency contact numbers displayed upon entering the scenic area. Staff are present at almost every attraction to guide visitors and assist with cleaning. A shuttle bus connects the scenic area gate and the cable car station, which is very convenient. The only drawback is that some restrooms within the scenic area are extremely unsanitary; some people couldn't stand it and vomited on the spot. It is hoped that the scenic area will improve its management in this regard.

It quite nice to travel around Shuimodanxia, however, the downside is if you want to save time and save energy you must buy in-dept travelling because I spent almost 2 hours walk across the mountain and there are stairs and stairs. With that said It was worth for visiting when you stay in Lanzhou.

Having passed through Jianmen Pass, no obstacle in life is insurmountable. Jianmen Pass was one of the attractions we had been longing to visit. This time, we used both our hands and feet to traverse the "bird path," truly experiencing the difficulty of the Shu Road. The large and small tunnels were both quite unique, while the Stone Bamboo Shoot Peak and the One-Line Sky were rather ordinary. If you don't want to take the bird path, you can climb the cliffside corridor, while the gate tower stands tall and imposing.
