Wilderness Beach
No. 6 of Cool Water Escapes in South Africa

Wilderness Beach

5.8
Wilderness Beach is an open beach facing the Indian Ocean. Its west end connects to the mouth of the Caimans River, and it extends east to the area around the Tou River mouth, stretching for several kilometers. Backed by dunes covered in scrub and shea trees, with green hills visible in the distance, the overall view is wide and peaceful. The pale white sand is broad and gently sloping, and dolphins can often be seen along the shore. From about May to November each year, southern right whales and humpback whales migrate along the coast, and you may spot whales from the beach or from higher points on the shore. The main surf zone has waves year-round and is suitable for surfing. The beach is also good for walking, sunbathing, and swimming. On clear days you can see paragliders launch from the cliff top and glide along the coast toward the beach. The Tou River lagoon behind the dunes has relatively calm water, suitable for swimming and other water activities. A wooden boardwalk to the beach crosses the dunes, making access easier while reducing impact on dune vegetation.Wilderness · 3.5km from downtown

Highgate Ostrich Show Farm

19 reviews
Highgate Ostrich Show Farm was established in 1938. Oudtshoorn became an important region for ostrich farming due to the development of the ostrich feather industry from the late 19th to the early 20th century, and this history is part of the farm tour. Mountains and semi-arid plains can be seen around the farm, and herds of ostriches are kept in the paddocks. The tour is guided and covers topics such as ostrich breeds, feathers, incubation, and farming. Visitors can learn about how incubators work and the anatomy of an ostrich, and can also experience activities like feeding ostriches and standing on ostrich eggs. In the incubation area, you can see ostrich eggs and chicks. The farm has a processing area where you can learn about the processing of materials like feathers, leather, and eggshells, while the showroom displays feather products, leather goods, and eggshell crafts. The farm features the Pepper Tree Restaurant, which offers local flavors such as ostrich steaks and ostrich egg dishes, with outdoor seating that provides views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The overall tour focuses on ostrich farming, processing, and the local ostrich industry, and also provides insight into the historical connection between Oudtshoorn and the ostrich farming industry.Oudtshoorn · 44.9km from George

Knysna River

Knysna Riveris an estuary lagoon connected to the Indian Ocean, located next to the town of Knysna along the Garden Route in South Africa. At high tide, the water is vast and calm, resembling a giant mirror. As the tides change, sandbars are exposed in some areas, subtly altering the shoreline. Two headlands facing each other extend toward the center of the lagoon, causing the wide water surface to narrow abruptly here, forming a natural channel that connects the inner lagoon to the open sea. The headlands not only shape the unique spatial layout of the lagoon area but also act as a natural barrier, blocking some of the Indian Ocean's waves and keeping the waters inside relatively calm. Therefore, compared to the open sea, the interior of the lagoon is more suitable for water activities, with boat tours, kayaking, and sunset cruises all concentrated in this area. During the voyage, you can observe the natural view composed of the shoreline, headlands, and the open lagoon from the water.Knysna · 54.3km from George

Tsitsikamma National Park is located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and is part of the Garden Route National Park. The park stretches along the coast, and its marine protected area covers dozens of km of pristine coastline. The landscape here is diverse—indigenous forests spread along river valleys, cliffs plunge into the sea, mountain fynbos and coastal wilderness intermingle, and rivers rush from the inland to the sea, carving out deep canyon views. Storms River Mouth is the core area of the park. A suspension bridge spans the mouth, and walking on it offers a spectacular view of the river water meeting the ocean waves. Inside the park, there is a hiking trail stretching approx. 40+ km from Storms River to Nature's Valley, passing through beaches, cliffs, wilderness, and indigenous forests, offering panoramic views of the coastline along the way.South Africa · Western District

Cango Caves

Cango Caves are located at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, north of Oudtshoorn, South Africa, and are one of Africa's most representative large stalactite caves. The cave developed within ancient limestone strata, and over tens of millions of years of groundwater erosion and deposition, it has gradually formed the vast underground space seen today. The various halls within the cave are known for their unique geological features, with the deeper Botha Hall being particularly spectacular. Giant columns stand inside the hall, and travertine draperies formed by limestone deposits hang from the cave walls, layer upon layer, revealing textures naturally carved over long ages. The adjacent Rainbow Hall offers a completely different viewing experience, with colored lights shining through the translucent stone curtains to cast colorful halos between the rock walls and columns, giving the originally dark cave a dreamlike visual effect.Oudtshoorn · 67.5km from George

The Ostrich Farm in Oudtshoorn is a large farm that specializes in breeding ostriches. Ostrich is a delicacy on the tables of people here. There are about thousands of large ostriches raised here. The small ones are about 1.45 meters tall, and the big ones are up to 2 meters tall. They will run over to ask you for food, which is really a bit scary.

Knysna Coral Lake is the estuary of the Ness River in Cape Town. It is a large lagoon formed by changes in the siltation terrain. The entire lake is about five kilometers in size and the water is clear. Because the lakeside is full of reed swamps and the natural environment is good, it has become a paradise for migratory birds to reproduce. In the green mountains and clear waters, the Coral Lake is like a dazzling pearl that is intoxicating.

It is STUNNING here! I don’t know what else to say! The place where the river meets the sea, the experience of going up the river and feeling the ocean’s tides affect it. Beautiful.
