Kumbum Monastery is one of the important monasteries of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Yellow Hat sect. The monastery features magnificent architecture, abundant treasures, and a strong religious atmosphere, making it one of the more popular travel destinations in Xining. Overview of the visit It has distinct differences in architectural layout compared to Han Chinese Buddhist temples in inland China: the complex here is not symmetrically arranged along a central axis. The monastery is an ancient architectural complex composed of numerous halls, scripture halls, stupas, and colleges, with each sutra hall, main hall, and stupa irregularly distributed on a small hill. Travelers can explore the site in a relatively free manner rather than following a straight path along a central axis. The Great Golden Roof Hall of Kumbum Monastery is the center of the entire architectural complex. It is said that Master Tsongkhapa was born here, and when he was born, his umbilical cord blood dripped on this spot, from which a bodhi tree grew. Later, a stupa was built around the tree, and a monastery was constructed, hence the name. Believers hold that this tree and stupa are the embodiment of the master. The three unique features of the attraction: butter sculptures, murals, and appliqué embroidery. Butter sculptures are made by mixing butter with various pigments to mold and carve into figures of Buddhas, people, flowers, birds, animals, and pavilions. Travelers can admire exquisite butter sculptures at the butter sculpture hall inside the temple (located far from the main gate). Vibrant centuries-old murals can be appreciated in the main halls, corridors, and front galleries of the temple. Appliqué embroidery involves cutting colored satin into desired shapes, such as Buddha figures or animals, stuffing them with wool or cotton, and embroidering them onto cloth hangings. In the temple's great sutra hall, two rare large appliqué embroidery pieces—"Sixteen Arhats Displaying Divine Powers" and "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea"—hang on either side. The four major religious festivals (based on the lunar calendar): 1. Cham dance (14th day of the first month) and butter sculpture exhibition (15th day of the first month); 2. Cham dance (14th day of the fourth month), Buddha unveiling, and Cham dance (15th day of the fourth month); 3. Buddha unveiling, Cham dance (6th day of the sixth month), and golden Buddha procession (8th day of the sixth month); 4. Full-day Buddha unveiling (22nd day of the ninth month) and Cham dance (23rd day of the ninth month). During these festivals, activities like Buddha unveiling and ritual dances take place, attracting large crowds of devotees and travelers, creating a lively atmosphere.

Kanbula, located in Jianzha County, Huangnan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, is a newly designated UNESCO Global Geopark, hailed as a sacred mountain and water of Tibet. Here, the Yellow River transforms into a crystal-clear lake, with towering, reddish-brown Danxia landforms rising directly from the water's edge—a unique spectacle of Danxia landforms on water, breathtaking at first glance. The entire park is distinctly layered, with the emerald-green Yellow River reservoir at the foot of the mountains, towering peaks in the middle, and continuous forests atop the mountains. Ancient Tibetan Buddhist temples are scattered among the hills, blending nature and culture seamlessly. Visitors can travel by boat or car, the mountain scenery constantly changing with the perspective, every snapshot a masterpiece. Due to its high altitude, there are significant temperature differences between day and night, and strong ultraviolet radiation; a thick jacket and sunscreen are essential. Not too far from Xining, it's perfect for a day trip and a hidden gem in Qinghai that shouldn't be missed.

Entering Nanzonggou, the reddish-brown Danxia peaks rise like towering pagodas, while pines and cypresses stubbornly cling to the cliffs. Clear springs gurgle at the bottom of the valley, and the mountain breeze carries the fragrance of grass and trees past your ears. Occasionally, a argali sheep flashes by between the cliffs. There is movement within stillness, like a flowing painting of Danxia mountains and clear waters on the plateau. Danxia is the body, the Yellow River is the vein, and ancient temples are the soul. Here, the creation of nature and human beliefs are perfectly integrated.

Luoduojie Zhihe Temple is located in the north of Luoke Village, Maketang Town, Jianzha County, Qinghai Province. The upper courtyard of Zhihe Temple is built on the hillside of Xijiang Rock, 4 kilometers away from Jianzha County and about 130 kilometers away from Xining City. It is a cultural relic tourist attraction and tourist attraction that integrates visiting ancient sites, worship, sightseeing and scientific research.       Zhihe Temple was first built in the Huichang Year of the Tang Dynasty (842 AD). During the Yuan Dynasty, Sakya Panchen built a Benkang here. During the Qing Dynasty, he dug a rock wall to build a Buddhist hall and sculpted Buddha statues. Zhihe Temple is also called "Vajra Cliff Temple" because it is mainly composed of cliff caves. It is known as the "Mogao Grottoes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau", and is closely related to the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the later period of the lower road, the "Hometown of Chinese National Archery Sports", and the "Hometown of Five-Colored Magic Arrow Culture and Art". It is a famous scenic spot integrating history, humanities and nature. It was approved as a provincial cultural relic protection unit in 1998.

The Qiankunwan Museum consists of an introductory hall and three specialized exhibition halls: the Geological Science Hall, the History and Culture Hall, and the Folk Customs Hall. Together, they paint a magnificent picture of "Charming Yanchuan," showcasing the magnificent beauty and wonders of this land. The Folk Customs Hall is the museum's most vibrant corner. Reproductions of cave dwellings in northern Shaanxi recreate the scenes of life on the banks of the Yellow River. Yanchuan is known as the "Hometown of Folk Paper-Cutting," and its paper-cutting and cloth-stacked paintings have both been designated national intangible cultural heritage, showcasing the charm of this folk art.

I hadn't originally planned to go, but I spent an extra day in Xining. Aside from being far from the city center, it was quite nice. I took bus 909 directly from Xining Station. At the entrance, I shared a guided tour with other tourists; there were quite a few unlicensed guides in the square. Their explanations were alright. At the butter sculpture museum, I encountered a little white cat and learned how to identify Master Tsongkhapa.

Although Chaka Salt Lake is often avoided, the scenery is still quite beautiful, but not worth a second visit! The most disappointing thing in the scenic area is the mini-train!!! There's no set departure time and it moves extremely slowly. Unless you're suffering from severe altitude sickness, there's absolutely no need to ride this mini-train! The scenery is very weather-dependent; it only looks good on sunny days.

The Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum is well worth a visit, with its South and North wings each having their own focus. Its crown jewel is the Guinness World Record-holding 618-meter-long painted Thangka, created with natural mineral pigments and breathtaking detail. Other exhibits include Tibetan medicine mandalas, traditional costumes, ancient books and ritual implements, comprehensively showcasing the history, medicine, and customs of the Tibetan Plateau. Renting a guided tour is highly recommended to allow for a leisurely appreciation of Tibetan civilization; it's an excellent place in Xining to gain a deeper understanding of Tibetan culture.
