Gaoyiling Tourist Area

4.5/5
5.3k reviews

Gaoyiling Tourist Area is a natural attraction centered on Danxia landforms. Unlike many Danxia views that feature only mountains without water, this area's red cliffs and crimson rock faces are dotted with emerald pools, and the lake at the foot of the hills is as clear as jade. Viewed from above, dark green pools encircle the crimson ridges, often vividly likened to a "heavenly lake" embracing an "octopus," with the contrast between red and green creating a highly distinctive scene. The attraction's trail runs along the mountain ridge, with the core highlights concentrated at several spots: Dragon's Back Ridge, Monitor Lizard Lake, and the cliffside plank walkway. Dragon's Back Ridge is a narrow ridge at the top of the mountain, with sheer cliffs on both sides; walking along it offers a panoramic view of the Danxia landscape, and it is also a popular photo spot. Monitor Lizard Lake takes its name from a Danxia rock formation in the lake that resembles a monitor lizard lying in wait; during the dry season the rock's full outline is revealed, vivid and lifelike. The cliffside plank walkway is built against the cliff face, with a deep canyon below, leading to a sliver of sky — stone walls press in on both sides, and at the narrowest point only two people can squeeze through sideways. The Hundred-Step Sky Ladder is a steep flight of stone steps, and after reaching the top the view opens up wide. The tour route follows the ridge trail as its main line, with little shade along the way and strong sun exposure. Danxia elements such as mountains, waters, springs, caves, villages, cliffs, and flatlands are all present here; among them, "flatland" is the local term for flat areas atop Danxia peaks, and the Meili Flat area is planted with bamboo groves, serving as a rest stop along the hike.

Mount Hengshan

4.5/5
6.7k reviews

Mount Hengshan is located in Nanyue district, Hengyang. Its highest peak is Zhurong peak, at an elevation of approx. 1300 m. Among the "Five Great Mountains", Mount Heng is located furthest south. Its relatively favorable climate means the mountain is verdant all year round, with lush trees, earning it the reputation of being the "most beautiful of the Five Great Mountains". Mount Hengshan is mainly composed of the central attraction and a few other small attractions. When most visitors refer to "Hengshan," they mean the central attraction. The "Nanyue Grand Temple" in Nanyue Town at the foot of Mount Hengshan is an important attraction besides the central attraction, and it is a massive ancient palace-style architectural complex in southern China. Mount Heng is a sacred site of Chinese Buddhism, where the "Nanyue school" of the Southern Chan tradition was founded, and its dharma lineage gave rise to the Weiyang and Linji schools, which spread throughout China and overseas. In addition, this is also a sacred site of the War of Resistance in southern China. At the foot of Xianglu Peak, the "Nanyue Martyrs' Shrine" commemorates and buries Chinese soldiers who died on the frontal battlefields of the War of Resistance. When visiting the central attraction, you can choose to walk the entire way, or combine walking with the eco-friendly bus (including the cableway). For most ordinary visitors, the latter is recommended, as it will leave you with more energy to appreciate the beautiful scenery in the mountains and experience the cultural connotations of Nanyue. Route recommendations If you choose to travel on foot and by eco-friendly bus (including the cableway), then visiting Mount Heng in one day is not a particularly strenuous task. You can first visit the "Nanyue Grand Temple" in Nanyue Town, and then enter the central attraction. The basic route is:Martyr's Shrine-Hengyang Mount Hengshan Tourist Area-Banshan Pavilion-Magu Wonderland-Mojing Terrace-Hengyang Mount Hengshan-Hengyang Mount Hengshan Tourist Area-Nantianmen-Zhurong Peak. If you have more time, then spending two days touring Mount Hengshan will yield more rewards. The general route is similar to the "1-day tour" above; since you have ample time, after visiting the Fuyan Temple in Mount Hengshan in Hengyang, you can then go to the Sutra Library Hall in the Mount Hengshan tourist area in Hengyang and stay for a while—it is extremely tranquil there. In the early morning of the second day, you can also head to the "Sun-Watching Terrace" to watch the sunrise.

Nanyue King Museum-The Site of King's Tomb

4.6/5
6.3k reviews

The Museum of the Nanyue King (Royal Tomb Exhibition Area) was originally the Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Nanyue King, which opened in 1988. After the two museums merged to form the Museum of the Nanyue King in 2021, this area became the exhibition area themed around the royal tomb. It was built around the original site of the tomb of Zhao Mo, the second king of the Nanyue Kingdom of the Western Han Dynasty. This royal tomb was discovered in 1983 during construction on Xianggang Mountain on the west side of Yuexiu Mountain. It was carved into the mountain and buried deep inside the mountain. The tomb is shaped like the Chinese character "士" (shi), and is divided into seven burial chambers according to the "front court and rear palace" layout. It has been undisturbed by tomb robbers for more than two thousand years and is well preserved. The entire exhibition area consists of three parts: the ancient tomb protection area, the comprehensive exhibition building, and the main exhibition building. The original site of the tomb is preserved within the ancient tomb protection area. You can enter the original tomb site: the upper walkway offers an overhead view of the stone chamber structure. To descend to the lower level for a closer look, advance booking is usually required, with limited slots available. Even if you can't secure a spot, it won't diminish your experience of this mountain-carved royal mausoleum. Among the unearthed artifacts, the jade burial suit stands out as the signature piece. Composed of over 2,000 jade pieces threaded together with silk, it measures more than 1.7 m in length and is one of the earliest and most complete jade suits discovered in Chinese archaeology. The dragon-knobbed gold seal inscribed "Seal of Emperor Wen" found near the tomb owner's chest directly confirmed his identity. The main exhibition, "Treasures of the Nanyue Kingdom: Artifacts Unearthed from the Nanyue King Museum-The Site of King's Tomb of the Western Han Dynasty," is divided into five sections: the gold seal of Emperor Wen, treasures from the main chamber, sacrificial victims, imperial storage, and ritual bronzes. Beyond the jade suit and gold seal, you can also see the rhino horn-shaped jade cup carved from a single piece of green jade (now listed among China's prohibited overseas exhibition relics), the high-stemmed cup combining jade, gold, silver, bronze, and wood materials, as well as over ten sets of jade pendants and dozens of jade sword ornaments from the Han dynasty. The double-ring jade pendant with openwork dragon and phoenix designs was found covering the tomb owner's right eye. Its inner ring features an openwork swimming dragon, while the outer ring depicts a phoenix—this very motif became the source of the museum's emblem. The visit usually follows the order of the comprehensive exhibition building, the ancient tomb protection area, and the main exhibition building. The comprehensive exhibition building also features a special exhibition titled "Ceramic pillows donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yang Yongde," where the diverse shapes and glazes of porcelain pillows from various dynasties are easily overlooked but worth taking a few minutes to appreciate. The tomb also contains over ten sacrificial burials, corresponding to the "Sacrificial burials in the tomb" unit, offering a direct insight into the unique burial customs of the Nanyue Kingdom. If you're interested in Han Dynasty jade artifacts or the history of the Nanyue Kingdom, it's recommended to hold two to three hours for a thorough exploration.

The scenery of the Li River is exactly what is depicted in the primary school Chinese textbook essay "Guilin's Scenery," and the praise "Guilin's scenery tops the world" is inseparable from this river. The peaks on both banks of the Guilin Li River Scenic Area are tall, majestic, and endlessly varied, making this the essence of Guilin's scenery. "A hundred miles of Li River, a hundred miles of gallery"—green peaks line the banks, emerald waters swirl, gorges and cliffs rise, springs and waterfalls hang, and green islets and treacherous shoals, wondrous caves and beautiful rocks abound; every view is like a typical Chinese ink painting. The main ways to explore the Guilin Li River Scenic Area include taking a boat, riding a bamboo raft, and hiking. Cruising downstream allows you to take in the peak forests and pastoral villages along both banks, making it the classic way to experience the entire river; bamboo rafts are ideal for getting up close to the water and cliff faces on the most scenic stretches; hiking along the river lets you pass through villages and mountain paths, savoring everything at your own pace. The section from Yangdi to Xingping is known as the essence of the Guilin Li River Scenic Area, home to classic views such as Nine Horses Mural Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal Reflection, and the Xingping scenery—no matter which option you choose, it is not to be missed.

I’ve a great memorable and interactive time in the Chimelong International Circus. I purchased at here since I was not able to purchase in WeChat as I don’t have China phone number. The view is so great and all of the performers are just infront of me. Totally recommend this experience! It’s just a pity that it’s only 1hr! :)

The scenery is beautiful, featuring Danxia landforms rarely seen in northern China. However, it gets extremely sunny at midday, so it's best to avoid visiting around noon. Going earlier, before noon, will allow you to see most of the sights. Alternatively, go after 2 PM, as there's less shade in the area.

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't visited the Museum of the Tomb of the Nanyue King in all these years in Guangzhou 😅, but I was incredibly lucky to stumble upon a special exhibition of Egyptian artifacts. Seeing two great civilizations in one visit was an immersive experience that I highly recommend! The museum is located on Xianggang Mountain, built on the original site of the tomb. This is truly unique; it's not just about moving exhibits into the hall. Standing in the tomb passage, you can feel the original layout of the tomb. It's not just looking through glass from afar; you're genuinely on an archaeological site. The details of the Nanyue King's tomb itself are breathtaking. The jade burial suit, gold seal, and chime bells are far more impactful than textbook pictures. The information panels are very clear, making it easy to understand the funerary practices, craftsmanship, and history of the Nanyue Kingdom in Lingnan during the Han Dynasty—it's not just a superficial visit. The biggest surprise was the concurrent Egyptian exhibition! I hadn't planned ahead, but once inside, I discovered how wonderful it was to see different civilizations side-by-side. Having ancient Egyptian stone carvings and ornaments alongside Nanyue artifacts in one visit, comparing the craftsmanship of two ancient civilizations, was a truly novel experience. The exhibition hall has a well-designed layout, preventing overcrowding. The lighting is also suitable for viewing the artifacts, avoiding glare that obscures details. Tips: It's recommended to book online in advance. Audio guides are available for rent inside the museum; otherwise, you might miss the historical context. The ground-level tomb area has many steps, so wear comfortable shoes. The museum isn't extremely large; allowing 2-3 hours is just right and won't be too tiring. Overall, it offers excellent value for money and is a must-see for history enthusiasts. Catching a special exhibition was a delightful surprise; the experience of encountering two ancient civilizations simultaneously is rare, and I'll definitely visit again!

A Seven-Character Quatrain on Viewing Five Finger Peak A magnificent sight in Chenzhou, Five Finger Peak soars to the heavens. A towering cliff holds up the azure sky, a thousand layers of verdant ravines rise in layers of peaks. Dense forests hang upside down on the cliff edge, a light mist lingers around the majestic mountain peak. Many visitors rush to climb the stone plank road, but I alone stand quietly at the foot of the cliff.

We really enjoyed this cruise. 60 minutes of relaxing stress relief. The views of the night city skylines was incredible. We enjoyed seeing everything from a different angle combined with less crowded area to view close up Canton tower. The three bridges we traveled under also offered a different fun experience. A pretty city showcased by the cruise. Food (snacks stuff) and drinks are served to order throughout trip

There are plenty of fun activities; grass skiing down the slopes is incredibly relaxing, and the hillsides are dotted with adorable cartoon installations, making it feel like stepping into a fairytale world. Adults and children alike can have a great time, and every snapshot is a beautiful scene—a truly worthwhile trip.
