Dai Ancient Town

39 reviews
The Dai Ancient Town is located in Mangshi, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is built according to the national 4A-level scenic spot standards. Through in-depth excavation of Dai history and culture, with ancient Dai culture as the leader, architecture as the backbone, commerce as the spirit, and intangible cultural heritage as the skills, relying on the shape of the mountains and water, it has created a world ancient Dai cultural experience site that integrates cultural experience, leisure vacation, tourism services and ecological living. Improved Dai-style stilt houses are distributed on both sides of the main street, and the gray tiles, wooden eaves and carved window lattices retain ethnic characteristics. The Dai Ancient Town "has theme festivals every month, regular activities every day, and large-scale celebrations every year". Many theme, literary and artistic activities have been carried out, which also allows many tourists to feel the unique charm of Mangshi here. The ancient town is about 3 kilometers away from the center of Mangshi. It is recommended to ride or take a taxi to avoid the scorching sun at noon. If it is the Water Splashing Festival in April, the town square will hold a water-taking ceremony and song and dance performances. It is recommended to prepare replacement clothes in advance to participate in the interaction.Mangshi · 1.5km from downtown

Shubao Tower, originally named Tiecheng Pagoda and known as "Guangmu Jielie" in the Dai language, is named after the former Dai village of Jielie where it was built. It is one of the older Dai Buddhist pagodas in Mangshi. Legend has it that the local chieftain built this pagoda during the Qing Dynasty to commemorate a military victory. The pagoda is a solid brick structure standing 11.6 m tall, with an octagonal base supporting a conical, bead-shaped body. The finial's rings and vase point toward the sky, with smaller pagodas standing at each of the four corners. The stone carvings of the mythical "Gatuo" beasts on the base still retain the traditional charm of Dai Buddhist pagodas. What truly made it famous throughout western Yunnan is the spectacle formed by the pagoda and the tree intertwined for over a century: it is said that abodhi tree seedlanded in the dust on the pagoda's top, carried by bird droppings. It took root and sprouted, with the roots cascading down the pagoda walls. Over time, they completely enveloped the entire structure. Today, the dense canopy covers the top of the pagoda like an umbrella, and the gnarled roots coil down the body. From a distance, the pagoda appears hidden within the tree; up close, the tree seems to grow from the pagoda. The tree wraps around the pagoda, and the pagoda embraces the tree, interdependent and inseparable. The bodhi tree is considered a sacred tree in Dai Buddhist culture, and a tree growing atop a pagoda adds even more significance.Mangshi · 420m from downtown

Dehong Prefectural Museum

Dehong Prefectural Museum is a comprehensive museum dedicated to showcasing the history and ethnic culture of the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. The museum building features an irregular cubic design, resembling a "treasure box" as a whole, and the exterior walls are colored in the red earth characteristic of the Yunnan plateau. Even before entering, the building itself bears a distinct regional imprint. The museum's exhibitions are centered on the theme of the Southwestern Silk Road: from the Western Han Dynasty bronze relics of the "Dianyue Elephant-Riding Kingdom," to the Eastern Han Dynasty bronze washbasin with fish patterns from "Zhuti Tanglang," to the caravan bronze bells that recorded the Tea Horse Road trade, the "Mengmao Ancient Kingdom" palm-leaf manuscripts, Dai ethnic chieftain seals, and the Longchuan Pacification Commissioner's seal engraved in both Manchu and Chinese, the ancient trade route, which spanned a millennium, is connected by these individual artifacts. The museum's treasure, the Longjiang-style asymmetrical bronze axe, is an Eastern Han Dynasty bronze artifact. It features a thin body, a nearly semi-circular blade, and is decorated with diagonal grid and nipple patterns; it is well-preserved and has been designated as a national first-class precious cultural relic. The ethnic and folk exhibition focuses on items such as Dai brocade, carved gold and silver jewelry, and the lead dancer's hat for the Jingpo Munao Zongge dance. Theravada Buddhist statues and seals of successive chieftains are also striking. The museum also features an intangible cultural heritage experience area where visitors can try their hand at activities like Dai paper-cutting and Dai pottery making, and ethnic cultural display activities are often held on holidays.Mangshi · 2.3km from downtown

The Meng Huan Golden Pagoda is a must-see attraction in Mangshi. Its golden splendor can be seen from various parts of the city. Climbing the long steps, the pagoda's unique South Asian Dai royal palace style is visually stunning, and the view of it framed alongside the silver pagoda is unique. Inside, the Buddha statues are exquisite, and the Buddhist atmosphere is profound.

On January 7, 2026, I finally visited this tree-encased pagoda attraction that I'd been wanting to see for so long. Admission is free. The area is quite small, and new residential buildings, all 20 stories high, are under construction nearby. I imagine they'll affect the view when they're finished. The tree is enormous; it's a Bodhi tree, and the pagoda is nestled within its trunk. The tree and pagoda are tightly integrated, completely merging into one—a truly rare spectacle. Five to ten minutes is enough for a visit and some photos.

The architectural style of Mangshi Square is unique, integrating the traditional cultural elements of the Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups. The roofs of the buildings in the square are all glowing with golden light, and the entire square presents an exotic Burmese style. These buildings are not only beautiful and generous, but also carry rich historical and cultural connotations. A good place for citizens to relax and have fun. Citizens will do morning exercises here early in the morning, and it will be more lively in the evening. Citizens will play chess and cards, dance square dances, etc. here, enjoying a leisurely time. Unlike the square dances that everyone knows in the mainland, there is no annoying noise here, but dancing to the beautiful folk music. It is not only a kind of appreciation, but you will definitely have the desire to join if you are there. There are flame trees planted around the square, and the flame flowers in autumn are really beautiful; there are also coffee shops and restaurants; there are all kinds of local delicacies in the residential area not far away, and you can eat happily in the morning or in the evening.

It's huge, covering an entire mountain. There are shuttle buses to and from the mountain. The jungle adventure is also good, with a particularly long walkway. The package ticket includes a slide down the mountain, which is quite nice. You can get up close to the peacocks in the peacock garden, and you can buy feathers at the small shops nearby. They're cheaper than other places! 👍🏻 Apparently, there are over 10,000 peacocks inside. I saw enough on my first day; afterwards, I got tired of seeing peacocks at other attractions. 😂 It's definitely worth it. Getting a taxi is also quite convenient.

Dehong Museum, Library and Cultural Center are all in one square. Three venues with three architectural styles. As soon as you enter the museum, there is a free explanation machine on the counter. Sign up and get one. It will play the corresponding cultural relic explanation as you walk, which is very detailed! From the long history of cultural relics, Dehong Prefecture has a long history of human activities, an important geographical location, and cultural heritage.

A fun and worthwhile hidden gem! You can challenge yourself on the glass walkway, sample cave-aged wine, and enjoy stunning mountain and cave views. It's a truly unique place, with an underground river inside the cave that even raises koi fish – a great spot for making a wish.
