Laoshan Scenic Spot

8.5

Qingdao · 23.9km from downtown

26.3k reviews

Laoshan Scenic Spot is located in the east of Qingdao, bordered by the Yellow Sea to the east and south. It enjoys the reputation of "famous mountain on the sea," with its highest peak at an altitude of approx. 1,100 mJufeng. The attraction, renowned for its majesty, grandeur, uniqueness, and elegance, has become a famous Taoist mountain. The Taoist temples, sunrises, and sea of clouds in the attraction are allPrestigious. The attraction is mainly composed of seven scenic areas: the Laoshan Jufeng Scenic Area, Liuqing River Scenic Area, Laoshan Taiqing Scenic Area, Huayan Scenic Area, Laoshan Yangkou Scenic Area, Laoshan Jiushui Scenic Area, and Laoshan Hualou Scenic Area. There are four tour routes in total, including three land routes (south route, east route, and central route) and one water route. The scenery in these scenic areas includes: Jufeng Sunrise, Taiqing Water Moon, Haijiao Immortal Mound,Hualou Dieshi, and Jiushui Mingyi, together forming the twelve scenic spots of the attraction. The Hualou scenic area of Laoshan is located in Beizhai Subdistrict, Laoshan District. The Jiushui scenic area of Laoshan is known for its water, with streams and springs throughout the attraction and beautiful scenery. For typical visitors, the routes truly worth exploring are the Julan Peak scenic area of Laoshan and the Liuqinghe scenic area–Yangkou scenic area of Laoshan route; one day for each of these two routes is sufficient. The Julan Peak scenic area of Laoshan and the Yangkou scenic area of Laoshan are also where the attraction's natural beauty lies. Liuxinghe attraction - the Laoshan Yangkou scenic area, also known as the southern route, is the earlier-developed attraction here. It hugs the coastline and features the famous attraction Laoshan Taiqing Palace, making it the route most people take. The basic route into the attraction is Liuxinghe attraction - Taiqing Palace scenic area - Huayan Temple, with the endpoint being the Laoshan Yangkou scenic area. Since the essence of this route lies in the Laoshan Yangkou scenic area, it is recommended that you manage your time accordingly when visiting the attractions before it. Laoshan Taiqing Palace—LiaozhaiMediumLaoshan MountainThe setting of the story of the Taoist priest. Back then, Pu Songling came to this place and was inspired by the Taiqing Palace in Laoshan, where he wrote "The Taoist Priest of Laoshan." Visitors here can see the wall through which the Taoist priest in Pu Songling's story passed through walls and walked through solid barriers. Huayan Temple — the surviving Buddhist temple in the attraction. Because the Laoshan Yangkou scenic area is close toHuanghai, where you can look at the sea and enjoy the breeze. Of course, in addition to the beautiful scenery, the Yangkou Scenic Area of Laoshan also has the challenging Mitian Cave. This cave is winding, steep, and narrow; in dark spots you cannot see your hand in front of your face, and in narrow spots you can barely squeeze through, greatly increasing the fun of the visit. You can walk or take a cable car to Mitian Cave; after climbing to the mountaintop, you can take photos, enjoy the scenery, and gaze out at the Yellow Sea. Also remember to bring a flashlight so you can take in the beautiful sights inside the cave. In addition to the Yangkou Scenic Area of Laoshan, the second beautiful spot in the attraction is the Giant Peak Scenic Area of Laoshan. The Giant Peak Scenic Area is home to the main peak of the attraction, with Laoding as the highest point. This area is mainly for mountain hiking and is one of the more physically demanding parts of the attraction. The Giant Peak Scenic Area of Laoshan features layered rocky peaks with a magnificent momentum. On clear days, you can see the sea; on cloudy days, you can watch the sea of clouds; and from Laoding, the sunrise offers a breathtakingly enchanting view.

Badaguan

8

Qingdao · 3.2km from downtown

8.3k reviews

Badaguan is a coastal neighborhood in the southern part of Qingdao, nestled between the southern foothills of Taiping Mountain, Huiquan Cape, and Taiping Cape. It earned its name from eight streets named after ancient passes, with roads like Shaoguan Road, Zhengyangguan Road, and Shanhaiguan Road now forming a crisscrossing network. The area is shaded by lush trees, dotted with deep courtyards, and offers a tranquil atmosphere with few pedestrians. This neighborhood boasts hundreds of old villas built in the 1920s and 1930s, showcasing a blend of architectural styles from Russia, Britain, Germany, Denmark, Japan, and more, earning it the nickname "International Architecture Expo." Among them, the seaside Huashi Building is a European castle-style structure built with multicolored stones and is one of the few villas open to the public, allowing visitors to explore inside and enjoy sea views from its rooftop platform. On Juyongguan Road, the Princess Building is a Danish-style villa with green walls and red tiles, named after a Danish princess and known for its photogenic charm. The Marshal Building on Shanhaiguan Road is a Japanese-style villa where several founding marshals once stayed. Note that most villas here are not open to the public, so visitors can only admire their exteriors. A unique feature of Badaguan is its "one tree per road" theme: Shaoguan Road is lined with flowering peach trees that bloom brilliantly in spring; Ningwuguan Road is adorned with crabapple flowers in late spring and early summer; Zhengyangguan Road is filled with crape myrtles throughout summer and autumn; Jiayuguan Road is flanked by maple trees turning red and yellow in late autumn; Juyongguan Road is carpeted with golden ginkgo leaves; Zijingguan Road features evergreen cedars; while Shanhaiguan Road and Linhuaiguan Road are lined with plane trees and junipers, respectively. Each season transforms the neighborhood into a different landscape. Walking south to the end of these roads leads to the seaside, adjacent to the Second Bathing Beach, where fine sand contrasts with red-tiled villas, embodying Qingdao's classic "red tiles, green trees, blue sea, and azure sky" scenery. This area is a popular spot for wedding photos and a quintessential place for strolls and photography in Qingdao.

Qingdao Polar Ocean World

Qingdao · 5.4km from downtown

64.4k reviews

Haihe'an Qingdao Polar Ocean Park faces the Yellow Sea and backs onto Fushan Mountain. Located along the coastal tourism belt of Laoshan, it is a polar ocean theme park integrating marine displays, animal conservation and popular science experiences. The park comprises five venues: the Polar Oceanarium, Horizon Theater, Deep Sea Fantasy – Jellyfish Secret Realm, Polar Legend – Ice and Snow Experience Hall, and the 360° Dome Theater. At its centre lies Whale Joy Square, where a giant water-spouting beluga whale sculpture stands as an iconic landmark of the park. The Polar Oceanarium serves as the core venue of the park. It houses polar animals including beluga whales, dolphins, walruses, polar bears and penguins, and exhibits a rich variety of marine creatures such as hawksbill turtles, sand tiger sharks, golden trevally, cow-nosed rays, jellyfish and seahorses. Horizon Theater is an open-air theatre facing the sea, featuring interactive performances starring walruses, sea lions and other marine animals. Deep Sea Fantasy – Jellyfish Secret Realm is home to a 360° fully transparent jellyfish tunnel. Countless jellyfish of varied shapes drift amid shifting lights, forming a dreamy miniature ocean world. Polar Legend – Ice and Snow Experience Hall combines ice-and-snow art with recreational experiences, allowing visitors to enjoy ice and snow attractions all year round. The 360° Dome Theater delivers immersive deep-sea visuals with naked-eye 3D effects. The park features marine animal performances, with six shows on offer: *Sea Whale & Dolphin Show*, *Beluga Romance*, *Deep Sea Mermaid Show*, *Sea Lion Legend – Pava*, *Science Magic Show* and *Magical Ocean*. *Sea Whale & Dolphin Show* brings together performances by beluga whales, false killer whales and dolphins, blended with dance, acrobatics and water ballet. *Beluga Romance* presents tender scenes of humans and beluga whales dancing together underwater. *Deep Sea Mermaid Show* combines mermaid performances with swimming fish schools, enhanced by modern light and shadow effects. *Sea Lion Legend – Pava* stars sea lions and walruses, telling an adventure story set on the sea. There are many delightful viewing zones across the park. The Undersea Tunnel lets visitors feel surrounded by schools of fish and other marine life. In the beluga whale exhibit tank, beluga whales swim gracefully with their keepers. The Deep Sea Migration Pool offers wide viewing vistas, letting guests admire corals and colourful fish without diving. The Ocean Cute Creature Gallery creatively reinterprets classic world paintings with polar animal motifs for a playful effect.

Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center

7.8

Qingdao · 1.6km from downtown

3.1k reviews

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center is located on the shores of Fushan Bay in eastern Qingdao, where the sailing competitions of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were once held. Here stands the giant Beijing Olympic torch and the Olympic rings, and the harbor is filled with a spectacular array of sailing boats. This is also a great place to enjoy the sunset. The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center is a vast area featuring a long coastal promenade. You can stroll along the seaside, or lean against the railing and gaze blankly at the sea and enjoy the sunset, savoring all kinds of coziness. By the sea at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, there is a sailing boat dock, where sailing boats with masts and private yachts are moored throughout the harbor, forming a beautiful scenic sight. You can also first go to May Fourth Square and walk along the seaside all the way to the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center (approx. 1 km). There is also a cruise terminal here, where sea sightseeing cruise ships dock. You can sit on the boat to look at the sea and enjoy the coastal scenery. Sea tours all last about one hour, with one departure time in the morning and one in the afternoon on weekdays, and a night tour in the evening. During holidays such as National Day, additional departure time slots are usually added. In the southern part of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, there are several large buildings that once served as the venue area for the Olympic sailing competitions, and the Olympic Sailing Museum is now located here. Next to the museum, at the waterfront dock, stands the "Maritime Theater," which hosts a long-running nautical-themed performance titled "Dream of the Sea." At night, the exterior of this building is illuminated in changing colors such as red, yellow, blue, and purple, looking very beautiful from a distance. Walking to the southern end of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, you will come to a boardwalk extending into the sea, known as "Lover's Dam." Here, various bars, coffee shops, and restaurants stand in abundance, and at the end of the boardwalk is a white lighthouse. It is a great place for a date with your partner in the evening; even if the two of you simply stroll around and enjoy the sea breeze, it is quite romantic.

Qingdao Underwater World

7.7

Qingdao · 4.4km from downtown

36k reviews

Qingdao Underwater World is a themed venue integrating marine life displays with science education, developed from the Qingdao Aquarium built in 1932, and comprising six major exhibition halls: the Dream Jellyfish Palace, the Seal Hall, the Marine Life Hall, the Whale Hall, the Underwater World, and the Freshwater Life Hall. Entering the Dream Jellyfish Palace, thousands of jellyfish of dozens of species display brilliant colors under the lighting, with moon jellies, ribbon jellyfish, flower hat jellies, and other species drifting gracefully in the water; together with interactive virtual walls and mist screen displays, they create a dreamlike jellyfish kingdom. In the Seal Hall, visitors can observe spotted seals, sea lions, penguins, and sea turtles up close, these marine mammals moving freely in the blue venue. The Marine Life Hall systematically displays marine specimens in the order of biological evolution, covering fish, marine mammals, corals, and many other categories, and is an important window for understanding marine biodiversity. Next, you enter the underwater world area built entirely underground. The more than 80 m long underwater tunnel is made of acrylic glass and features viewing windows at various angles; strolling through it, you can feel surrounded by a multitude of marine creatures such as sharks, rays, and sea turtles. In the cylindrical tank, schools of tropical fish such as clownfish can be seen swimming around the coral. The live underwater performances in the underwater theater are a major highlight of the attraction: "Dancing with Sharks" is thrilling and exciting, the "Dream Mermaid" performance is aesthetically romantic, and programs such as underwater ballet and "Monkey King Havoc in the Underwater World" are staged in rotation. Finally, you can visit the Freshwater Biology Hall, which is landscaped with Inca and Mayan cultural elements and features a large Chinese sturgeon tank, where you can also see rare freshwater creatures such as arapaima and redtail catfish, and amphibians and reptiles are exhibited on the second floor. The visiting route through the entire attraction is one-way, passing in sequence through the Dream Jellyfish Palace, Seal Hall, Marine Life Hall, Whale Hall, Underwater World, and Freshwater Biology Hall, with no backtracking along the way, so it is recommended to set aside ample time to explore at a leisurely pace.

Qingdao Site Museum of the Former German Governor's Residence

7.4

Qingdao · 4.5km from downtown

9.6k reviews

The Qingdao Site Museum of the Former German Governor's Residence, also known as the Guest House and commonly referred to as the Governor's Mansion, is located at the southern foot of Signal Hill. Built in 1905 and completed in 1907, it originally served as the official residence of the German governor of Jiaozhou Bay. Designed by German architect Lazarowicz, it blends the architectural style of the Wilhelmine era with Jugendstil techniques. Architect Liang Sicheng praised it as a monumental work of architectural art that integrates multiple cultural concepts from East and West. The entire mansion features a castle-like design with four floors and dozens of rooms, now open to the public as a museum. The building's exterior is striking enough: yellow walls adorned with large mushroom stones and granite, topped with beige-red barrel tiles, blue fish-scale tiles, and green ox-tongue tiles. The pediment above the main entrance features a radiant sun pattern crafted from rough stone, surrounded by carvings of anchor chains and knots, with a dragon-head stone sculpture—inspired by Norman ship figureheads—jutting out from one side. The color scheme and details make it highly recognizable in Qingdao's old town. Inside, the palace-style wooden decor showcases exquisite carvings and craftsmanship: the central hall spans two floors, lofty and bright, while the banquet hall doubles as a concert hall, complete with an orchestra pit and private boxes. The top features a crystal chandelier with a bronze frame weighing over a ton. At the eastern end lies a steel-framed glass conservatory. The building still displays original furnishings like an old piano, grandfather clock, gun cabinet, and rosewood bed. The tower roof's slope ratio matches that of Ming and Qing Chinese architecture, with glazed tiles adorning the parapet walls, creating a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western elements throughout. It should be noted that photography is generally not allowed inside the museum, so you'll mainly have to rely on the exterior architecture and courtyards for keepsake photos. After the visit, you can conveniently climb the nearby Signal Hill to overlook the old town with its red roofs and green trees, as well as the bay.
