Lawang Sewu

33 reviews
Lawang Sewu is located in the city center of Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, and is a century-old Dutch colonial building. Its name means "a thousand doors" in Javanese, derived from the numerous doors and windows in the building. Although the actual number does not reach one thousand, its densely arranged arches and corridors create a unique visual effect. The building was originally constructed in 1904 and served as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company, later being used as a military prison during the Japanese occupation. Today, it is open to the public as the Museo del Ferrocarril de Madrid and has become an iconic attraction in Semarang, showcasing colonial architectural styles and the history of railway development in Indonesia. As one of the well-known historical sites in Semarang, Lawang Sewu not only carries colonial memories but also showcases the history of railways during Indonesia's modernization process, serving as an important window for exploring Indonesia's cultural heritage.Central Semarang · 1.1km from downtown

Lapangan Pancasila Simpang Lima Semarang is located in the heart of Semarang and serves as the intersection of five main roads: Pahlawan, Pandanaran, Ahmad Yani, Gajah Mada, and K.H. Ahmad Dahlan. The square was built in 1969 as a proposal by then-President Sukarno to replace the traditional city square in the old Kauman district, aiming to create a more open and representative municipal public space. This is a popular spot for locals in Semarang to gather on weekends and holidays. People often participate in Car Free Day in the early morning, cycling, walking, jogging, exercising, or meeting with family and friends. In the evening and at night, the area around the square is lined with vendors and food carts, and as the lights come on, the city atmosphere comes alive, making it a great place for sightseeing and trying local delicacies. Because of its accessible location, lively atmosphere, and free admission, Lapangan Pancasila Simpang Lima Semarang has become an important window into the local life and cultural pulse of Semarang.South Semarang · 1.1km from downtown

At the time, Semarang was a wild, undeveloped area. Sam Poo Kong was built to commemorate Zheng He's arrival. The temple's architecture is largely classical Indo-Chinese in style, with towering pagoda-style roofs, large domes, and many Chinese lanterns and dragon decorations.West Semarang · 2.2km from downtown

An absolute must-visit in Semarang! The Dutch colonial architecture with its iconic 'thousand doors' and beautiful stained glass windows is stunning. It's incredibly well-maintained and rich in history. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended to learn about its fascinating past. It’s also a fantastic spot for photography, especially in the late afternoon!

Not only magnificent, the Great Mosque of Semarang has a variety of uniqueness that makes it special. One of them is that there are giant umbrellas in the courtyard outside the mosque. The umbrellas can open and close automatically.
