Sunrise Sightseeing in Dunhuang

The Gobi Desert and sand dunes of Dunhuang form a vast natural theater. When the morning light pierces the sky, the golden rays gild the curves of Mingsha Mountain. Layers of texture emerge from the quicksand in the light and shadow, as if the earth is awakening, making Dunhuang at sunrise even more vast and magnificent. Dunhuang offers diverse sunrise views from various locations. From Mingsha Mountain, one can overlook the rolling sand dunes, where the rising sun is reflected against Crescent Lake. In the Yadan landform area, the morning light carves clear contours on the wind-eroded rock faces, and the earth-yellow ridges interplay light and shadow, reminiscent of prehistoric ruins awakening. Whether sitting alone on the dunes or sharing this moment with companions, Dunhuang offers a unique sense of the spatial and temporal depth of sunrise.China · Dunhuang

Jiayuguan Cultural Relics Scenic Area

Jiayuguan Cultural Relics Scenic Area

6.2
The Jiayuguan cultural relics scenic area includes three major attractions: Jiayuguan pass city, the overhanging great wall, and the first beacon tower of the great wall. It showcases the historical role of the Hexi corridor as a military barrier and a key town on the silk road, featuring the historical remains and sites of Jiayuguan's military defense system as its main view resources. The Guan City of Jiayuguan features a well-planned layout and excellent architectural design. It is divided into inner and outer cities, with three main grand gate towers and structures like arrow towers, enemy towers, corner towers, watchtowers, and sluice gate towers built along the city walls. The inner city serves as the core and main body of the Guan City, with a perimeter of 640 m and an area of 25,000 m². Outside the east and west gates of the inner city, there are protective barbicans, each covering over 500 m². The barbican gates all face south, and to the west of the western barbican lies the outer city wall, with a gate in the center facing west, inscribed with the characters "Jiayuguan" on its lintel. Key existing structures within the Guan City include the Residence of the Guerrilla General, the official well, Guandi Temple, an opera stage, and Wenchang Pavilion. The Hanging Great Wall is located 14 km northwest of Jiayuguan city, 8.4 km south of the Guan City of Jiayuguan, serving as a crucial component of Jiayuguan's military defense system. When Minister Zhai Luan inspected the Hexi defense system and found Jiayuguan's defenses inadequate, he petitioned the imperial court. Under the supervision of Li Han, the military defense officer of Suzhou, the northern and southern wings of Jiayuguan's Great Wall were constructed, known as the "Ming Wall and Hidden Wall." The Ming Wall ends at the "First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall" by the Taolai River south of the pass, while the Hidden Wall terminates at the Hanging Great Wall in the Shiguan Gorge north of the pass. Together, the Ming Wall and Hidden Wall act like a pair of iron wings guarding the Hexi Corridor for Jiayuguan. Thus, the Guan City, along with the northern and southern wings of the Great Wall and surrounding beacon towers, forms a complete military defense system. The first beacon tower of the Great Wall (also known as the first tower under heaven), as the westernmost beacon tower of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, was historically called the Taolai River beacon. It borders Jiuquan to the east, connects to the desert in the west, leans against Jiayuguan in the north, and faces the Qilian Mountains in the south. Standing on a nearly 56 m high cliff by the Taolai River, it is also the southernmost beacon tower of Jiayuguan's western Great Wall, earning the title "the most perilous beacon tower under heaven". The First Beacon Tower attraction mainly includes sightseeing spots such as the underground valley, viewing platform, Taolai inn, perilous suspension bridge, ancient-style military camp, drunken on the battlefield, and century dragon forest.China · Jiayuguan

Western Thousand Buddha Caves

The Western Thousand Buddha Caves are an integral part of the Dunju Buddhist art system. There are 16 caves from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Song Dynasty. Among them, the first to third caves are the Tang Dynasty caves, the fourth to eighth caves are the Wei Dynasty caves, and the sixteenth caves are the late Tang Dynasty caves. These 9 caves are well preserved. The shape of the cave and the artistic style of the murals are the same as those of the Mogao Grottoes, and the time of its creation is at least the same period as the Mogao Grottoes. Among the 9 well-preserved grottoes, most of them have a central seat in the center, with niches carved around the seat and Buddha statues inside. Under the central seat and the Buddha statues on the four walls, the statues of King Kong and Luxuries are painted. The story of the west section of the south wall of a grotto in the Northern Wei Dynasty (Lazijing) and the story of the east section (Laodu Chadou Shengbian) are the stories of the Buddha's life that are not found in the Northern Wei caves of the Mogao Grottoes, which can fill the gaps and are unique. value. The walls and caissons of other caves are rarely painted with stories of Buddha's life.Dunhuang · 67.5km from Subei

The Shazhou/Dunhuang Night market is clean, cohesively decorated, and conveniently located in the city center! As part of your silk road travels visit this well put together market for delicious food and souvenir buys! 🛍 We bought cashmere wool scarves, magnets, and knick knacks all for great prices. The vendors are not pushy at all! We had a pleasant experience wandering the shops and the vendors were very friendly and accommodating. I'd recommend having alipay or wechat pay set up as this is the most convenient payment method when travelling China but at this market the vendors did accept cash from our fellow tour guide travellers. 🐟 The food court area gives camping vibes. You'll see small camp stools and chairs around small fires. Our tour guide told us that the fish and beef cakes are the most popular. We tried the fish which was yummy and the beefcakes welllll the line was a little too long for us but our fellow tour group travellers said it was delicious and even bought some for the road the next day! 🎐 Since the market was in the city center we explored the shops nearby and then caught a Didi back to our hotel. The night market is worth visiting, probably one of the best I have visited in my travels.

The Overhanging Great Wall was too crowded; parking was free but difficult, and it seemed like it would easily cause a traffic jam. The First Beacon Tower was actually quite nice, with a good feel to it, being completely natural.

The Five Temples Grottoes are one of the small and medium-sized grottoes in the ancient Gua and Sha areas (now Guazhou and Dunhuang areas) centered on the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. They are located on the cliffs on the west bank of the Dang River, about 100 kilometers south of the Mogao Grottoes and 20 kilometers northwest of the county seat of Subei Mongolian Autonomous County. The caves were carved on the sand cliffs formed by the erosion of the Dang River. The sand cliffs are about 30 meters high. The caves are suspended halfway up the cliffs, about 12-15 meters from the ground. There are 19 existing caves on the cliffs about 300 meters long from south to north. Only the five caves in the middle can be climbed, so they are called "Five Temples". One of them was destroyed in the early years. On the east bank of the Dang River opposite the Five Temples Grottoes, there are four residual caves. About 5 kilometers upstream from the Five Temples, there is a grotto, commonly known as "One Temple".

We set off at 9:00 AM and arrived at the park entrance at 10:15 AM, just in time for the 11:00 AM Meng Jiangnu Theater. My daughter had planned our trip in advance, downloading the Fantawild App, which helped us efficiently plan our rides and save time. We only visited the park's most thrilling and classic attractions, and even then, it took us eight hours. However, it was definitely worth it—the experience was fantastic!

I absolutely love Dunhuang Ancient City! It feels like stepping back in time. This film and television base is my favorite; it's incredibly old and so realistically built. It has every kind of ancient filming location imaginable. I even saw the Monkey King and Fairy Zixia on the city wall, which brought back so many youthful memories! And my favorite, New Dragon Gate Inn, was also filmed here. So amazing! If you're not in a rush, you could easily spend an afternoon exploring it. Highly recommended!

Besides the Mogao Caves, a visit to the Western Thousand Buddha Caves is a must when visiting Dunhuang; the overall experience exceeded my expectations. It's quiet and less crowded, with no need to squeeze into long queues, making for a very comfortable visit. The site is right by the roadside, making it easily accessible, and perfect for following the western route itinerary. While there aren't many caves, each one is worth seeing. The murals and statues are well-preserved, showing signs of age; although the colors have faded, the lines and details remain exquisite. The staff are friendly and their explanations are easy to understand, not too obscure, making it accessible even to the average person. It's not overly commercialized, the atmosphere is pure, and you can quietly appreciate the ancient cave art. Compared to popular tourist spots, this place allows for a more immersive experience of history, offering excellent value for money and making it a worthwhile trip when visiting Dunhuang.
