Flaming Mountain Scenic Area

The Flaming Mountain Scenic Area is a Turpan attraction famous for its crimson sandstone landform. Stretching approximately 100 km east-west, it is called "Kiziltag" (meaning "red mountain") in Uyghur and was historically known as "Volcano Mountain" during the Tang Dynasty due to its extreme heat. Located along the northern Silk Road in ancient Gaochang Kingdom territory, its barren, crimson ridges appear like rising flames under the scorching sun. Combined with its association with Journey to the West's "Three Borrows of the Banana Fan" episode set here, Flaming Mountain has become a must-visit Turpan destination. The attraction features underground and aboveground sections: visitors typically start with the underground gallery-style exhibition hall, whose ceiling mimics the sky with decorative lighting, housing themed zones like the Journey to the West cultural corridor, Flaming Mountain geographical exhibit, and Gaochang historical figures hall, offering insights into the mountain's formation and ancient Gaochang history. The true highlight lies aboveground—vibrant red cliffs create spectacular photo opportunities under sunlight, while Journey to the West character sculptures (Tang Monk, Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, etc.) dot the plaza. A landmark giant thermometer shaped like the Monkey King's staff displays real-time ground temperatures. Summer brings extreme heat, with ground temperatures often reaching 60–70°C or higher, making midday visits particularly challenging. Bring ample water, sun hats, sunglasses, and scarves for sun/dust protection, and avoid afternoon peak heat. Exploring the entire attraction takes about one to two hours at a leisurely pace, with most time recommended for the striking aboveground views.Turpan · 26.8km from downtown

“Kumtag” means “Sand Mountain” in the Uyghur language. The Kumtag Desert is formed by the tempestuous winds from Tianshan's Qijiaojing Wind Gap and the Dabancheng Wind Gap. After a long journey, the sand that has been carried in the wind collides and deposits in the Kumtag area, forming a desert with various sand dunes. The Kumtag Desert has been developed into a scenic area integrating scientific research, investigation, exploration, sand sports and desert tourism. Looking south from the old town of Shanshan, the golden desert rolls endlessly into the horizon. For thousands of years, the desert and the oasis have coexisted like royal lovers.Shanshan · 23.5km from downtown

Situated to the west of the city of Turpan, Yarkhoto (also called Jiaohe) is a city which flourished during the Southern and Northern Dynasties through to the Tang Dynasty. Later, due to years of war, the city was abandoned and became a ruin. It is a relatively complete urban relic. The ruins of Yarkhoto are divided into temples, houses, and government offices. All the structures are made with rammed earth. Today these ruins of once magnificent rammed earth buildings give Yarkhoto its sense of historicity. It is a good place for photography. There is no clear route to follow when visiting the Yarkhoto Ruins. Take a walk and take photos as you please.Turpan · 9.9km from downtown

On the vast Gobi oasis, you can see many raised sand hills, arranged in an orderly manner and extending to the south. They are the vertical wells of the Karez, and below them are the Karez underground channels. The Karez is composed of four parts: vertical wells, underground channels, open channels, and flood dams. The Karez is an ancient water conservancy project that uses local geographical, hydrogeological and topographical conditions to bring groundwater to the surface without any power.Turpan · 6.3km from downtown

Jiaoheyi was an important post station on the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. The Jiaoheyi Attraction is equipped with: post station meeting hall, post station house, horse caravan, beacon tower, Karez source, world's largest drying room, grape corridor, etc. The Attraction presents this period of history in multiple forms, reproducing the ancient way of transmitting information through the five scenes of Chang'an City, Jingzhao Post Station, Liangzhou Post Station, Yumen Pass, and Jiaohe Post Station. The glory of the Silk Road post station is condensed here. Due to the dry climate, little rain and lack of water in Turpan, the local working people of all ethnic groups creatively guided groundwater to the surface for irrigation and domestic water use, which is called "Kanerjing", meaning "well hole". There are 1,784 Karez in Xinjiang with a total length of 5,272 kilometers. There were 1,237 Karez in Turpan in history, and only 214 Karez with water are still there. Karez is composed of four parts: vertical well, culvert, open channel and reservoir. The Karez in Jiaoheyi Scenic Attraction is called "Keqike Aji" Karez, which has a history of more than 570 years. The diameter of the Karez Source Scenic Area is 20 meters. You can take the sightseeing elevator directly to the source of the 50-meter-deep Karez and experience firsthand the "underground canal" created by the ancients with just a shovel, a pickaxe and a basket. It is known as one of the three great human projects in ancient China, along with the Great Wall and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.Turpan · 7.9km from downtown

Mazar village of Tuyuk valley is located in the climate zone south of the Flaming Mountains, with a history of over 2,600 years. The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves were first excavated in the late Northern and Southern Dynasties. They have been one of the Buddhist centers in the Western Regions since the Tang, Five Dynasties, Song and Yuan Dynasties. There were originally 83 caves in total. Among the 57 existing ones, 40 have murals. Among them, the murals in Cave No. 20 depict the image of the Uighur Gaochang King and Queen. On the back wall of Cave 33, there is a painting showing the disciples standing in silence and mourning after the Buddha's Nirvana, while Cave 38 is a cave reflecting the life scenes of ancient Manichaeism. Caves 82 and 83 are small memorial caves built for Buddhist monks during the powerful period of the Gaochang Uighur Kingdom in the 10th and 11th centuries AD. The Uighur Gaochang was the prosperous period of the cave group. At the end of the 13th century AD, the Gaochang royal family moved east to Yongchang, Gansu. In addition, after Islam was introduced to Turpan, Buddhism gradually declined, and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves declined accordingly. They were destroyed in the pagan conflict, and the eyes of the figures in the murals were all dug out. At the beginning of this century, it was repeatedly robbed and destroyed by foreigners, which made it even worse and unrecognizable. Despite this, the remaining Buddha seat is gorgeous and exquisite, and the remaining murals are rich in content and colorful. It is still a large-scale cultural and artistic treasure house. If you want to appreciate the essence of the murals in this cave, you can only go to the Indian Art Museum in Berlin, Germany. To commemorate the passing of Tang Monk and his disciples here, a sculpture of four masters and disciples was built not far from the Attraction. The shape is based on the 1986 TV series "Journey to the West". Behind the sculpture is the Flame Mountain.Turpan · 29km from downtown

There were so many people visiting during the National Day holiday. 90% of the grapes had already been harvested; the remaining 10% were quite unique. However, the sightseeing bus service was extremely chaotic, with pedestrians everywhere and no order whatsoever.

Its core visual impact lies in its crimson mountains, which from a distance truly resemble a fiery dragon lying across the Gobi Desert. Especially at dusk, when the setting sun casts its rays, the fiery red of the mountains is completely ignited, creating stunning photographs. The awe-inspiring nature of this landscape is unique, and it is difficult for other parts of Xinjiang to replicate this extreme desolate beauty where "not a blade of grass grows."

Open the door at dawn to a sunrise and desert view 🌅 No need to queue in the morning, you can ride a whole caravan of camels all to yourself 🐫 Play in the sand and practice your skills before the desert gets too hot The police in Xinjiang are very relaxed. There are police tea stalls at the entrance of scenic spots They will even help tourists take photos, shattering my preconceived notions about the police.

Jiaohe Ancient Village, nestled at the foot of the ancient city of Jiaohe, is a century-old village that retains its original Uyghur charm. The earthen houses are scattered among the trees, and the hollowed-out grape drying sheds stand quietly. The folk museum displays old earthen hoes, wooden molds, and antique utensils, completely recreating the life of the early inhabitants of the Turpan oasis. The alleyways replicate an old bazaar, and there are immersive folk performances where song, dance, and storytelling intertwine. If the ancient city of Jiaohe is a frozen millennium epic, then Jiaohe Ancient Village is the living flame of the Western Regions, perfectly preserving the aesthetics of life in the Silk Road oasis. The evening breeze wafts through the earthen walls, carrying the faint aroma of fruits; walking through it, one seems to touch the warm essence of this land.

Tuyugou, including Mazar Village and the Tuyugou Grottoes, features charming earthen houses. The Tuyugou Grottoes are quite dilapidated, but their weathered atmosphere is palpable. A round-trip shuttle bus costs 10 yuan. Although it's only a little over 1 kilometer, 10 yuan is a reasonable price, especially considering the two-hour time allotted for the chartered bus.

It's worth visiting to learn about this important period of water conservancy development. I suggest consolidating the Kanjing area; there's no need to develop several adjacent industrial parks, as they're all quite similar—why break it up?

A long time ago when I visited Turpan, there was only one attraction related to the Karez irrigation system. Now, three have been developed: the Karez Well Park, the Karez Well Folk Culture Park, and the Karez Well Source. My chartered driver recommended this one; it's quite deep, but there's an elevator down. It's worth a look for basic information.

The Flaming Mountains (Kiziltag in Uyghur, meaning Red Mountain) are located in Gaochang District, Turpan City, Xinjiang, on the northern edge of the Turpan Basin, a crucial point on the ancient Silk Road's northern route. They are a national AAAA-level scenic area and a national geological park. The mountain range stretches approximately 98 kilometers east to west and 9 kilometers wide, with its main peak reaching an altitude of 831.7 meters. The mountains are primarily composed of iron-rich red sandstone and conglomerate, which blaze with intense red light and heat under the scorching sun, resembling a burning fire.

Upon entering, you'll pass a museum that you absolutely must visit; the electronic exhibits are fantastic. To tour the grottoes, you need to form a group. Each grotto has a guide who explains things very well, answers all your questions, and you can have quite in-depth conversations. However, like all the grottoes in Xinjiang, they were mostly excavated by the Germans and are now in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin, Germany (how awful!).
