London Travelcards FAQs

  • What are zones 1 to 6 in London?

London is divided into different travel zones to calculate fares and issue tickets. Zones 1 to 6 refer to the concentric rings that extend outwards from the city centre. Here's a breakdown of which area each zone generally covers:

    • Zone 1 - Central London.

    • Zone 2 - Inner London.

    • Zone 3 - Between Inner London and Outer London.

    • Zone 4 - Outer Part of London.

    • Zone 5 - Suburbs of London.

    • Zone 6 - Suburbs of London.

  • Is it cheaper to buy a Travelcard or use pay as you go/contactless?

When you make three or more journeys for six days or more within a 7-day period, a 7-day Travelcard works out cheaper than a contactless payment card.
  • Is it cheaper to get an Oyster card or a Travelcard?

Generally, it is cheaper to get an Oyster card and load it with pay as you go credit than to purchase a Travelcard, especially if you are only travelling in the central zones of London.

However, if you are planning to travel frequently and extensively throughout London, for example, if you make three or more journeys within seven days, the 7-day Travelcard is cheaper than using an Oyster card or contactless payment.

  • Can I get a refund if I have two Travelcards on an Oyster card with overlapping dates?

Yes, it is possible to get a refund if you have two Travelcards on an Oyster card with overlapping dates. You can request a refund for one of them.
  • Do you need to tap in with a Travelcard?

Yes. For example, Day Travelcards are paper tickets that can be used at the gates at Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and National Rail stations, or shown to the driver on buses and tram services.
