Looking up at the 208-meter Giant Buddha from up close is truly breathtaking. — traveler post in Baofeng

Looking up at the 208-meter Giant Buddha from up close is truly breathtaking.

A 2-day trip near Zhengzhou | Lushan Giant Buddha + Xiangshan Temple itinerary guide✨ 📍Destination: Lushan, Pingdingshan It takes about two hours to drive from Zhengzhou, making it perfect for a short weekend getaway. 🌿Day 1 | Central Plains Giant Buddha You can see the 208-meter-tall golden Buddha standing among the mountains from afar. The sense of solemnity is overwhelming, and you can only truly appreciate it when standing at the foot of the mountain. Walk slowly up the 365 steps, enjoying the view of the rolling mountains along the way. If you're interested, you can pay to touch the Buddha's feet or ring the giant auspicious bell. The light between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM is perfect for photos, and shooting from a low angle makes it easy to capture atmospheric shots. 🍲Local food After exploring, be sure to try Lushan Languo Cai. The rich ingredients paired with steamed buns are incredibly satisfying. If you prefer something lighter, the vegetarian buffet near the scenic area is a great choice. 📌Travel tips Admission is 35 yuan, and insurance is optional. There are many steps in the park, so be sure to wear soft-soled sneakers. Sightseeing carts and elevators are optional transportation services; those with less stamina can choose to use them as needed. You can get incense for free at the entrance of the scenic area, so there's no need to buy it outside at a high price. 🌇Day 2 | Xiangshan Temple This is the well-known ancestral temple of Guanyin. The temple complex spreads out along the mountain, and the mottled red walls paired with the ancient pagoda are particularly beautiful. It is recommended to visit near dusk, when the soft light of the setting sun spills over the vermilion walls, making it perfect for photography. The Guanyin Pagoda, the corridors, and the liberation pond are all excellent photo spots. Choose simple and elegant clothing. When visiting the temple, try to keep your voice down, respect the etiquette of the place, and do not take photos inside the halls. It takes about two to three hours to tour the entire area. 💫Summary A two-day trip where you can experience the solemnity of the Giant Buddha and the unique tranquility of the ancient temple. It's a great way to temporarily set aside the busyness of daily life and relax your body and mind. Would you plan a road trip like this for the weekend?💬

Explore the stories of the Ying State at the Pingdingshan Museum

Calling all history buffs and culture lovers! Come to the Pingdingshan Museum and travel back 3,000 years to explore the mysterious Ying State! 🏛️✨ The Ying State was established as early as the Shang Dynasty! According to oracle bone inscriptions from the Yin Ruins in Anyang, the Ying State was not far from present-day Qi County, Henan. 🤯 In the 11th century BC, the Zhou Dynasty implemented the enfeoffment system, granting titles to vassals on a large scale. This is the legendary "enfeoffing relatives to protect the Zhou"! At that time, there were over 70 enfeoffed states, more than 50 of which were ruled by the Ji clan, and the Ying State was one of them! 👑 The Ying State was enfeoffed during the reign of King Cheng of Zhou. Its territory was vast, stretching roughly from north of the Nanyang Basin to south of the Ru River, including present-day Lushan, Ye County, Baofeng, Jia County, Xiangcheng County, and other areas. It was truly a regional power! 📍 🕰️ Opening hours: Tue–Sun 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM), closed on Mondays (except for public holidays) 📍 Address: Middle section of Chang'an Avenue, Xinhua District, Pingdingshan City Can't wait to set off and experience this buried history! Forget Pingdingshan? Actually, it's amazing! — traveler post in Baofeng

Forget Pingdingshan? Actually, it's amazing!

(Clickbait warning!!! It's actually a recommendation!) For those who want to avoid the crowds, you should definitely check out Pingdingshan! It has both majestic mountains with a sea of clouds and the Zen atmosphere of ancient temples. It offers a great mix of nature and culture, is budget-friendly, and isn't crowded, making it perfect for a short weekend getaway. 🌿 Why visit Pingdingshan It's not a trendy, popular city, but it hides some of the best scenery in the Central Plains. You can hike Yaoshan to see the sea of clouds and unique peaks, visit ancient temples for peace of mind, and enjoy free lake views for relaxing or camping. Whether you're hiking, praying for blessings, or just relaxing with the kids, it covers everything and offers great value. 📅 Best time to visit ✅ Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best choices! In spring, the mountains are covered in flowers; in autumn, the red leaves on Yaoshan create an incredible atmosphere. Summer is cool for escaping the heat, and winter offers rime ice views—choose based on your preference. 📍 Must-visit attractions 1️⃣ Yaoshan Scenic Area (5A) Pingdingshan's top attraction! A must-visit! Check out the Qinglongbei ridge boardwalk, Jiuqu Waterfall, and Yuhuangding. If you're lucky after the rain, you might see a sea of clouds. If you're not feeling up for a strenuous hike, I recommend taking the cable car, otherwise, your legs will be sore. The autumn red leaves are stunning. 2️⃣ Xiangshan Temple Scenic Area The ancestral home of Guanyin, and it's a great deal! Tickets are only 5 yuan. It's not very commercialized, and the ancient trees and red walls are perfect for photos. It's a great place to stroll, clear your mind, and relax. Don't forget to see the national treasure, the Cai Jing Stele. 3️⃣ Baigui Lake Wetland Park Free! A healing spot kept secret by locals. You can walk or cycle around the lake and watch the beautiful sunset. You can set up a tent on the lawn, and the breeze by the lake is so relaxing. It's perfect for photos. 🗓️ 2-day, 1-night itinerary (lazy-traveler friendly) Day 1 | Natural scenery Morning: Head straight to Yaoshan, take the cable car up, visit Qinglongbei and Yuhuangding, and see the unique peaks and sea of clouds. If you're tired, don't force yourself to walk all the trails; turn back when needed. Lunch: Eat farm-style food at the foot of the mountain. Evening: Stay in Lushan County. Day 2 | Culture + relaxation Morning: Take a slow stroll through Xiangshan Temple, soak in the Zen atmosphere, and take some great photos. Afternoon: Head to Baigui Lake Wetland Park, walk by the lake to catch the sunset, enjoy the breeze, and wrap up your trip before heading home. 💡 Tips 1. Hiking Yaoshan is physically demanding! Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and snacks. I recommend buying a cable car ticket to save a lot of energy. 2. Don't miss the local food: Lushan Lan Guo Cai and Jiaxian Hele noodles. They have an authentic local vibe. 3. Xiangshan Temple is quiet and uncrowded, perfect for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle. The overall pace is balanced, allowing you to experience the grandeur of the mountains while being healed by the ancient temples and lake views. Avoid the crowds and enjoy a perfect weekend getaway.

Just got back from Pingdingshan, and let me be real: my perception of travel costs has been completely shattered! — traveler post in Baofeng

Just got back from Pingdingshan, and let me be real: my perception of travel costs has been completely shattered!

Before going, my mind was full of labels like "coal city," "industrial," and "just a stopover." After spending three days there, I was stunned—this place hides the most underrated treasure in the Central Plains, and the best part is that the costs are so low it’s hard to believe 💰💰💰 🏔️ First, let's talk about Yaoshan—it's not just hype that it's a Central Plains wonderland Formerly known as Shiren Mountain, it's one of the ten most beautiful peaks in Henan. With its strange rock formations, sea of clouds, and pine waves, it's stunning. In spring, azaleas cover the slopes. The cable car up is CNY 80 per person, which saves your legs and time. Walking down the plank road, you can still see traces of the ancient path, with wooden nail holes embedded in the stone crevices—the sense of history is palpable. Seeing the sea of clouds rolling over Yuhuang Peak made every penny worth it. Admission plus the scenic shuttle bus is CNY 120. I recommend combining the cable car with hiking; trying to hike the whole thing will just wear you out. The farmhouses at the entrance serve wild mountain vegetables with scrambled eggs, stewed chicken, and acorn jelly—all foraged from the mountain. You can eat your fill for about CNY 40 per person. 🗿 The Central Plains Buddha, to be honest, is a bit complicated At 208 meters, it's the world's tallest Buddhist statue, and standing at its feet is truly awe-inspiring. But honestly, the secondary spending experience in the scenic area is just average, and it feels quite commercialized. My advice: focus on the Buddha itself and the Foquan Temple to soak in the solemnity, and keep your spending rational. Do some research beforehand so you don't get swayed. 🍜 Food is Pingdingshan's hidden ace This deserves a special mention because the value for money for food in Pingdingshan is ridiculously high. 1️⃣ Jiaxian Heluo noodles: Freshly pressed buckwheat noodles, chewy and smooth, served in a mutton broth with green onions and chili oil. Pair it with a freshly baked mutton flatbread, and for CNY 18, you'll be in food heaven. I ate at that old shop on Jianshe Road twice. 2️⃣ Lushan Languo dish: Meatballs, vermicelli, and tofu stewed in one pot with Chinese herbal seasoning. It's savory and goes great with rice; a small portion is only CNY 15. You can eat your way from one end of the Heping Road pedestrian street night market to the other—grilled gluten, flatbread rolls, stir-fried rice noodles—it's full of authentic local vibes. 3️⃣ Sanlangmiao beef: Made from Jiaxian red cattle, the meat is firm and tender. It's vacuum-packed, making it a perfect souvenir to take home. 4️⃣ Baofeng mutton soup: Boiling broth is poured repeatedly over mutton, turning the soup milky white. It's a local breakfast staple served with flatbread. Have a bowl in the morning to stay warm all day. 5️⃣ Ru porcelain: Yes, Ru porcelain is from Pingdingshan! Baofeng Qingliang Temple is the site of the Ru official kiln. The celadon glaze has such a warm, gentle feel. Modern handmade cups cost CNY 300–800, while mass-produced ones are cheaper. You can watch the throwing and trimming process; the masters are so steady that the rims are thin enough to be translucent. 📍 Two severely underrated places You must visit the Pingdingshan Museum—it's free! From Peiligang culture artifacts to Spring and Autumn and Warring States period bronzes, plus a dedicated Ru porcelain exhibition area, you can see authentic pieces from one of the five great Song Dynasty kilns right in front of you. It's closed on Mondays, so remember to book in advance via their official WeChat account. Baigui Lake National Wetland Park is also free. With egrets flying about and the sunset reflecting on the lake in the evening, just use your phone's wide-angle lens and shoot from a low angle for amazing photos. It's best to go between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM when there's a light mist over the water—it's ethereal. ⚠️ Honest tips to avoid pitfalls 1️⃣ For high-speed rail, make sure you book to Pingdingshan West Station, not Pingdingshan Station. They sound similar but are far from the attractions. If you arrive late at night, there's a shuttle bus; search for the "Pingdingshan Bus Comprehensive Business Platform" mini-program on WeChat to book. 2️⃣ For accommodation, don't choose small hotels near the highway exit—trucks will rumble all night. In the city, choose the intersection of Kuanggong Road and Jianshe Road; there's plenty of food and it's close to the museum. Or stay by the Zhan River for a morning walk. Business hotels are CNY 180–260 on weekdays and around 300 on weekends. 3️⃣ Attractions are scattered, so renting a car is most convenient. If you don't drive, hire a reputable private driver for the day—they know the routes and will save you money by avoiding detours. 4️⃣ There are summer discount policies: Jiufeng Mountain is half-price (CNY 20) for students, Sansu Garden is CNY 20, Huamei Valley is CNY 40, and Zhengzhou residents get a special CNY 30 rate for Daxiangshan Cultural Park. Check the dates to save some money. 💰 Why my perception of costs was shattered For two people, three days of travel including transport, accommodation, tickets, and food cost less than CNY 800 per person. A taxi starts at CNY 7, and a trip across the city is under CNY 20. Heluo noodles are CNY 18, Languo dish is CNY 15, and farm meals are CNY 40 per person. The money you'd spend on one meal in a first-tier city can feed you for three days here. Pingdingshan isn't the kind of city that stuns you at first glance, but it's the kind that gets more comfortable the longer you stay and more addictive the more you eat. It has a solid foundation of scenery, authentic food, and honest prices. Stop treating it as just a stopover; give it three days, and it will show you the full tenderness of the Central Plains.

Yexian County Government Office: Watching the Henan Intangible Cultural Heritage Baofeng Puppet Show

I was truly amazed at the Yexian County Government Office Museum today! 😍 It was my first time seeing the Henan Baofeng string puppet show up close, and the performances by Lou Yanjun and Zhao Aixiang were absolutely incredible! ✨ Decades of dedication, using silk threads as the medium and puppet heads as companions—this craftsmanship is truly moving~ It's completely different from the puppet shows I usually see! The delicate movements of the string puppets, even the curve of the fingers, were handled perfectly—it felt like the puppets had come to life! 🤩 I have to admire the charm of our intangible cultural heritage~ 📍Yexian County Government Office Museum 📍Address: No. 9 Dongdajie, Yexian County, Pingdingshan City 🕐Opening hours: 9:00 AM–6:00 PM daily What's especially interesting is that watching this performance in front of the antique county government office building felt like traveling back to ancient times! 🏮 The ancient trees, brick walls, and upturned eaves in the courtyard, combined with the outlines of the puppet show's threads, created such an immersive atmosphere! The collision of tradition and modernity, the blend of simplicity and vitality—I suddenly felt that this is the most authentic, vibrant life~ 🪁 I recommend that friends visiting Pingdingshan must come to the Yexian County Government Office Museum to experience the charm of the intangible cultural heritage of our Central Plains! 💫 Who gets it? This kind of traditional culture really speaks to me! 🥹

Staying at this hotel makes my Pingdingshan business trip a breeze — traveler post in Baofeng

Staying at this hotel makes my Pingdingshan business trip a breeze

For this business trip to Pingdingshan, I booked the Runzeyuan Shenma Hotel near Yingcheng Square. It was a direct taxi ride from Pingdingshan West Station. When I checked in, the front desk staff saw I was in a rush with my briefcase and promptly assigned me a room on a good floor—very efficient. The room wasn't ultra-modern, but the desk and bed frame were clean, the mattress firmness was just right, and the hallway was quiet at night, so I could get a solid night's sleep after a busy day. Since I had to meet clients the next day, the front desk also stored my luggage, saving me the hassle of carrying it around. Breakfast is a real plus here; the selection of congee, rice noodles, and pastries is quite complete, and they even have a few local hot dishes, which gave me plenty of energy for the day. You can even order late-night snacks when you get back to the hotel, which is thoughtful for those arriving on late trains. The parking lot is large, making it stress-free if you drive yourself. The route from the hotel to my clients the next day was smooth and hassle-free, saving me enough time to sleep in for an extra 30 minutes. I snuck out for a break between meetings. Baigui Lake National Wetland Park isn't far from the hotel. The breeze over the lake on an early autumn afternoon was gentle. Walking along the wooden boardwalk helped me relax. I could watch the water birds flying low for hours without getting bored, and there were people on the shore waiting patiently with their fishing rods. The Pingdingshan Museum is also nearby. It clearly explains the city's history from the ancient Ying State to the present day, and it's well air-conditioned—a perfect place to rest your feet when you're tired of walking. If you want to see old architecture, head to Xiangshan Temple, said to be the ancestral temple of Guanyin. The courtyards are quiet and filled with the scent of incense—perfect for a slow, contemplative walk. The sound of the morning bell is incredibly peaceful. On the way back, I stopped by Yingcheng Square. As the lights came on in the evening, local residents were out for walks and dancing, giving the place a lively, authentic atmosphere. I found a small shop across the street serving Jiaxian Hele noodles. The thick noodles with lamb soup warmed me right up. I also had a serving of Lushan Languo dish—savory and perfect with rice. I was very satisfied with the food on this trip. Next time I'm in Pingdingshan for business, I'll likely stay here again. The location, parking, and breakfast hit all the essentials, allowing me to save my energy for work. When the ginkgo trees turn yellow in autumn, I plan to bring my family back to visit Baigui Lake.

Longmen Grottoes

It is worth visiting. The place is huge but I find the number of visitors huge. It's kinda hard to see the grottoes up cup close. There are other things to see aside from the grottoes like the temple (forgot the name though), river viewing and of course you can also ride the boats with extra charge. Thus, the amount you pay is actually worth it.

NicangNicang

Sansuyuan Scenic Area

It's a relatively niche tourist spot, with few visitors, so you can take your time to explore and appreciate it. I saw a short essay by a Su Shi fan at Su Shi's tomb; it was really well-written. I snapped a picture and uploaded it for comments, hoping more Su Shi fans will see it. I hope "Yunxi" won't mind?

Shenhou Ancient Town

This ticket grants access to three attractions in Shenhou Ancient Town: the Ceramics Bureau, the Bolingweng Temple, and the Guandi Temple. The Ceramics Bureau, with its Ming and Qing dynasty architecture and interior design, is definitely worth seeing, offering a wealth of information. The Bolingweng Temple and Guandi Temple opera stages are unique in their architectural style, serving two functions in one building: the front is the temple gate, and the back is the opera stage. This is the first time I've seen such ancient architecture, showcasing the wisdom and craftsmanship of our ancestors. The People's Cinema's immersive digital light show, offering a breathtaking experience of "myriad colors emerging from the kiln," is also well worth watching.

Too many people up the hills. Hard to enjoy the scenery quietly.

Baigui Lake National Wetland Park

The wetland beside the Pingdingshan Water Source Reservoir has a beautiful environment, shaded by green trees, flowers of all seasons, and winding paths. The roses in spring are the most distinctive. The roses are in full bloom around May Day. The entire wetland park is full of flowers, the fragrance of flowers is overflowing, and there are many people. It is a good place for Pingdingshan people to travel and relax.

Laojun Mountain Scenic Spot

The location for the creative beer was illogical; it was impossible to get one, especially for those taking the tour bus up the mountain. I ended up buying another bottle. The most fun part was sliding down the mountain on my butt – a less strenuous activity and more interesting. The summit was absolutely stunning, but the order was terrible; nobody cared or looked after you. You had to shout to get down the mountain, otherwise you wouldn't be able to get down at all.

Song Du Huangcheng Cultural Tourism Resort

It's very worthwhile, but it's also very crowded, which might slightly detract from the overall experience. However, the people are incredibly welcoming, and there are many beautiful spots for taking photos. The food is also affordable and inexpensive, which kids enjoy. I'll definitely go back when it's less crowded.

Wansuishan Martial Arts City

The price is quite reasonable. The main attractions are the performances and the interactive games with NPCs in the park where you can win silver tickets. I wouldn't recommend it when it's crowded. The "Three Attacks on Zhu Family Village" and "Iron Flower Show" require reservations after entering the park, which are quite difficult to book. Overall, it's okay.
