Ultimate Guide to Dreamy Waterfalls in Upstate New York | Step into a Real-Life Fairyland — traveler post in Ithaca

Ultimate Guide to Dreamy Waterfalls in Upstate New York | Step into a Real-Life Fairyland

Don’t just know Niagara Falls! Upstate New York hides some of the world’s top hidden waterfall clusters—gorges, water curtains, rainbows, mossy cliffs—every step feels like walking into a fantasy movie. More healing than the big city, more photogenic than trendy spots, this natural paradise is a must for nature lovers and photographers alike 🍃! 📍 Core Waterfall Clusters | Check in at 5 Dreamy Secret Spots 1️⃣ Watkins Glen State Park | Fairy Tale Gorge with Water Curtain✨ A must-visit in the Finger Lakes! This 2-mile gorge hides 19 waterfalls, with trails passing through water curtains, over stone bridges, and winding spiral stone steps. You can reach out and touch the mist—known as the “New York version of Jiuzhaigou.” · Highlights: Rainbow Falls (sunlight refracts into dreamy rainbows), mossy cliffs + emerald pools, scenic at every step · Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆, 1.5 miles of gentle trails, suitable for all ages · Admission: $10 per car, open May to October (closed in winter due to ice) 2️⃣ Taughannock Falls | 215-foot Giant Cliff Waterfall💦 The tallest single-drop waterfall in the eastern U.S., even taller than Niagara! Water plunges from a 100-meter cliff into a deep pool, with a deep gorge and mist filling the air—truly breathtaking. · Best views: Overlook from the viewing platform, hike down to the base for a close-up roar · Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆, easy short trail · Admission: $9 per car, open year-round 3️⃣ Ausable Chasm | Adirondacks Earth Rift🌊 Known as the “Grand Canyon of North America,” this sandstone gorge formed over 10,000 years features cliffs up to 150 feet high. Waterfalls rush through the chasm, with options for hiking, kayaking, or rope adventures. · Must-see: Rainbow Falls, Elephant Head cliff, stunning autumn foliage · Admission: $25 per person, includes basic trails; extra activities cost more 4️⃣ Kaaterskill Falls | Kaaterskill Double-Tier Waterfall🍂 The tallest two-tier waterfall in Upstate New York (260 feet), nestled in forested mountains. Water cascades in two stages into a crystal-clear emerald pool, with layered small waterfalls along the hike. · Difficulty: ★★★☆☆, 1.6 miles round trip, includes stone steps climb · Tip: Parking upstream shortens the walk; shallow pools for wading in summer 5️⃣ Niagara Falls | Majestic Transnational Wonder🌈 One of the world’s three great waterfalls, shared by the U.S. and Canada! On the U.S. side, get up close to the roaring Horseshoe Falls, often with double rainbows in the mist—utterly awe-inspiring. · Must-do: Maid of the Mist boat tour (goes under the falls, raincoat essential), Cave of the Winds (walk right under the falls) · Admission: State park free, boat tour $28 per person 🗓️ Best Time & Route Planning Best Seasons · May-June: Highest water flow, most spectacular waterfalls, fewer tourists · September-October: Colorful foliage with waterfalls, prime photography season · July-August: Summer retreat, great for hiking and wading, more visitors 3-Day Highlight Route (No backtracking) Day 1: New York City → Watkins Glen (gorge hike + water curtain photos) → Stay in Finger Lakes Day 2: Taughannock Falls (cliff waterfall) → Kaaterskill Falls (forest secret spot) → Stay in Kaaterskill Day 3: Ausable Chasm (grand canyon adventure) → Niagara Falls (stunning finale) → Return 🚗 Transportation & Practical Tips Transportation · Driving: About 4 hours from NYC, 1-2 hours between spots, highly recommended for flexible sightseeing stops · Public Transit: New York State buses to Ithaca/Glens Falls, then local transport What to Wear & Bring · Shoes: Non-slip hiking shoes (trails can be slippery, water shoes preferred) · Clothing: Quick-dry clothes + light jacket (mist can be cool), light or vintage styles for photos · Essentials: Raincoat (heavy mist), waterproof camera, sunscreen, trekking poles Avoid Pitfalls 1. Arrive at Watkins Glen before 8 AM to avoid crowds; sunlight through mist makes stunning photos 2. U.S. side of Niagara is less crowded and beautiful; Canadian side has brighter night views and a walkable bridge 3. Swimming is prohibited in all waterfall areas (dangerous currents), only designated shallow spots allow wading ⚖️ Hotspot Comparison | Help You Choose Precisely · Watkins Glen vs Niagara: The former is delicate, dreamy, and less crowded; the latter is grand, iconic, and a must-see—recommend visiting both · Taughannock vs Kaaterskill: The former is spectacular and panoramic; the latter is quiet, less known, and great for forest hiking 💬 Interactive Ending Upstate New York’s waterfalls offer both the healing charm of fairy gorges and the awe of natural wonders—a hidden treasure away from the city~ Which waterfall do you want to rush to first? Tell me in the comments! Want me to break down the route into daily schedules + restaurant recommendations? ❤️ Niagara Falls "Maid of the Mist" Boat Tour

#travelwithfootball Destination: Enfield, NY If you’re chasing some serious upstate New York nature vibes, Robert H. Treman State Park in Enfield is your go-to! 🌲💦 Trails, epic waterfalls, and dramatic gorges make it a paradise for all levels of hikers. Here’s why you’ll love it and how to max out your visit: Must-See Spot: Robert H. Treman State Park – 105 Enfield Falls Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850 Open year-round, 7:00–21:00 Don’t miss Lucifer Falls: this 115-foot cascade looks unreal in person! Park at Upper Entrance for easiest falls access and sweeping views. There are also scenic swimming holes (opposite the Lower Falls, usually open late June-Labour Day if lifeguards are present). Gorge and Rim trails loop you through postcard-perfect woodlands and rocky cliffs, with plenty of photo ops. Pro Tips: Arrive early to beat the crowds and snag the best parking, especially on weekends. Wear solid hiking shoes – trails can get muddy or slippery. Bring a day pack with snacks and water. 10 Days Train & Bus Journey 🌊 From NYC to Niagara Falls — traveler post in Ithaca

10 Days Train & Bus Journey 🌊 From NYC to Niagara Falls

That’s a great route, but I would make one adjustment. Instead of returning to Boston from Niagara Falls, return to New York City unless your flight home departs from Boston. Going from western New York to Boston is a long trip . If your international flight leaves from Boston, then this itinerary works well: 🍎 10-Day New York & Upstate New York Adventure 🗽 Day 1–3: New York City · Central Park 🌳 · Brooklyn Bridge 🌉 · Times Square ✨ · Staten Island Ferry 🗽 · High Line 🌿 🚇 Use the subway to get around. ⸻ 🚆 Day 4: New York City → Albany · Take an Amtrak train (about 2.5 hours). · Visit the New York State Capitol and Empire State Plaza. Stay overnight. ⸻ 🚆 Day 5: Albany → Saratoga Springs · About 40 minutes by train. · Walk downtown. · Visit Saratoga Spa State Park. Stay overnight. ⸻ 🚌 Day 6: Saratoga Springs → Ithaca · Bus (usually with a transfer in Syracuse). · Visit Taughannock Falls State Park and downtown Ithaca. Stay overnight. ⸻ 🚌 Day 7: Ithaca → Corning · About 1.5–2 hours by bus. · Visit the Corning Museum of Glass. · Explore the Gaffer District. Stay overnight. ⸻ 🚌 Day 8: Corning → Buffalo · Explore Canalside and downtown Buffalo. Stay overnight. ⸻ 🌊 Day 9: Buffalo → Niagara Falls · Take local bus or train to Niagara Falls. · Ride the Maid of the Mist (seasonal). · See the falls lit up at night. Stay in Niagara Falls or Buffalo. ⸻ 🚆 Day 10: Niagara Falls → Boston · Take Amtrak’s Maple Leaf to New York City, then transfer to the Northeast Regional or Acela to Boston. · Alternatively, take a bus (usually 10–12 hours with one or more transfers). 💰 Estimated Transportation · NYC → Albany: $25–50 · Albany → Saratoga Springs: $10–20 · Saratoga Springs → Ithaca: $30–50 · Ithaca → Corning: $15–25 · Corning → Buffalo: $25–40 · Buffalo ↔ Niagara Falls: $5–10 · Niagara Falls → Boston: $70–150 (depending on train or bus and booking time) This route is excellent if you’re looking for a mix of big cities, charming small towns, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes, all without renting a car. It also keeps transportation practical while letting you experience some of the best of Upstate New York before finishing in Boston.

Watkins Glen in Upstate New York — traveler post in Ithaca

Watkins Glen in Upstate New York

Watkins Glen, which I have been thinking about for years, did not disappoint me at all. It was absolutely stunning! 🥰 Although it is also a canyon park, it follows a beautiful route. The main Gorge Trail is not long, only 1 mile, but every step offers a new view, filled with numerous waterfalls, water curtain caves, winding narrow gorges, and unique rock formations, like a fairyland.
