Reflections on a Visit to Yaoyougou
Living in the city for a long time, I'm often enveloped by noise and anxiety, yearning for the tranquility of mountains and rivers. Taking advantage of some free time, I visited Yaoyougou in Lanling, Linyi. This ancient village nestled in the Yimeng Mountains, with its verdant mountains and clear waters, the everyday life of its ancient village, and its rich cultural heritage, soothed my restless heart, leaving me with overflowing warmth and profound insights.
The beauty of Yaoyougou begins with its pristine natural charm. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and water on one, the barren mountains boast a 95% green coverage rate, a tapestry of varying shades of green. Stepping into the scenic area, the city's hustle and bustle instantly disappears, leaving only the babbling brook, the crisp birdsong, and the rustling of leaves in the wind, weaving a natural symphony to heal the soul. The winding cobblestone path meanders through the valley, wildflowers bloom freely along the way, and the crystal-clear stream flows gently. Walking on the stones in the stream, the splashing water wetting my trousers, a long-lost sense of ease washes over me. As dusk falls, the setting sun bathes the valley in a warm golden glow, mingling the rising smoke with the twilight, making the distant mountains appear like dark eyebrows and the nearby waters shrouded in mist, resembling a flowing ink painting.
The charm of Yaoyougou lies in the warmth and tranquility of its ancient village. A typical northern village, its old houses with stone walls and black tiles are built against the mountainside, arranged in a charming, staggered pattern, preserving the original rural landscape of southern Shandong. Stone-paved roads, old stone mills, peeling paint on wooden doors, corn and peppers hanging under the eaves, a yellow dog lounging in a corner of the yard, and elderly people sunbathing in front of their doors—every detail exudes a simple, rustic charm. In the Baigongfang (Hundred Crafts Workshop), the creaking of wooden presses from the ancient oil presses and wineries fills the air with the rich aroma of wine and oil. The scenes of intangible cultural heritage inheritors working by hand allow one to touch the weight of time. On Xinghua Street, the aroma of Yimeng pancakes, Lanling wine, and other local delicacies wafts through the air, and the enthusiastic vendors and authentic flavors allow one to experience the most genuine human warmth.
The soul of Yaoyougou lies in the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature. Here, you'll find not only pristine natural landscapes but also immersive cultural experiences. On the ancient stage, Liuqin Opera and acrobatics are performed in turn, full of charm; the large-scale live-action horse battle, "The Legend of Drunken Lanling," is magnificent, with galloping warhorses recreating the heroic spirit of the ancient battlefield. Over 400 NPCs in ancient costumes roam the streets and alleys, with vivid and lively characters such as shopkeepers, constables, and Sun Erniang, interacting and playing games with tourists, making you feel as if you've traveled back a thousand years and entered a traditional Chinese martial arts world. Every brick, tile, blade of grass, and tree here carries the essence of Yimeng culture, telling a story of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature.
A day trip here passes in the blink of an eye, but the scenery and everyday life of Yaoyougou are deeply imprinted in your heart. It may not have the grandeur of famous mountains and rivers, but it heals the heart and cleanses the soul with its simple natural beauty and profound cultural charm. On the way back, I suddenly realized that the meaning of travel is never about escaping life, but about rediscovering our original aspirations amidst nature and feeling warmth in the everyday life. Yaoyougou taught me that life doesn't have to be rushed. Occasionally stopping to appreciate nature's gifts and experience human kindness is the only way to find inner peace and tranquility.
