Langbapu earth forest | a million-year geological wonder, a hidden gem in Yuanmou — traveler post in Mouding

Langbapu earth forest | a million-year geological wonder, a hidden gem in Yuanmou

When you visit Yuanmou, you must go to the Yuanmou earth forest. The Yuanmou earth forest is not a single attraction but a collective name for several earth forests. The three main core earth forests in Yuanmou are Wumao earth forest, Langbapu earth forest, and Bango earth forest. 1️⃣ Why visit Langbapu earth forest❓ Langbapu is located at the junction of Yuanmou, Dayao, and Mouding. The earth pillars are spectacular and colorful, the wilderness is peaceful, and the visual impact is strong. There are few tour groups. After comparing options and following local advice, we chose Langbapu earth forest. 2️⃣ How to explore Langbapu earth forest❓ Langbapu earth forest is divided into 4 viewing areas. Sightseeing vehicles usually take visitors to area 4, then tour in reverse order: 4, 3, 2, 1. When there are fewer people, you can tour in order from area 1 to 4. We toured in order. Area 1: Terrain slopes from high to low. Fewest visitors. It’s the most natural area. If you have energy, you can take a short walk here. If pressed for time, you can skip it. Area 2: A narrow, secret valley with the densest arrangement of earth pillars. The afternoon backlight creates a strong atmosphere. This area offers painterly textures and great spots for portrait photography. Area 3: The core highlight! Earth pillars reach over 40 meters high. The General Pillar and Thousand Buddha Wall are here. The textures and layers are rich. You must spend time here for photos. The cover photo is from area 3. Area 4: The highest point in the park with an open viewing platform. You get a 360° panoramic view of the entire earth forest cluster. This area is best for wide, distant views and drone shots. 📍Summary: Areas 1 and 4 offer panoramic views of the earth forest. Area 2 has the most diverse shapes. Area 3 has the tallest and most unique earth pillars. Many consider areas 3 and 4 the park’s highlights. I think except for area 1 being a bit less impressive, areas 2, 3, and 4 are all very beautiful. 3️⃣ How to choose among the three earth forests? ✅ Wumao earth forest, 4A: The most famous. Filming location for “The Promise” and “Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.” The earth pillars are compact and dense, with intricate mazes and castle-like screens. The colors are warm and soft. Facilities are well developed, making it suitable for families. The downside is it attracts many visitors. ✅ Langbapu earth forest, 3A: A hidden gem for photographers. The earth pillars are tall and majestic, with saturation far beyond Wumao. The colors have rich layers, and the sunset light and shadows are stunning. The downside is no public transportation, so it’s better for self-driving, car rental, or photography enthusiasts. ✅ Bango earth forest: Undeveloped and the largest in size, far exceeding Wumao and Langbapu. It’s a wild, natural area with dense but not clustered earth pillars. The geology is in the late stage of residual hill earth forest, with rugged shapes resembling ancient castle ruins. It has unique gem-like sandy textures. The roads are rough, so it’s not suitable for elderly or children. 🌟 Langbapu practical travel guide 📍Address: Langbapu Village, Xinhua Township, Yuanmou County, Chuxiong. 🚗 Transportation: Best by self-driving. Parking fee is 10 yuan for the whole day. ⏰ Hours: 8:00 AM–6:00 PM 📃 Ticket: Langbapu 50 yuan (Wumao 60 yuan). 🚖 Park electric shuttle: 20 yuan round trip, recommended. ⌛ Duration: 3–4 hours. The entire park is on foot with many stairs, so wear athletic shoes. 📸 Best season: October to May next year. The hour before sunrise and sunset is the golden time for photography. 👇 Two main earth forest self-driving routes in Yuanmou 📃 One-day tour: Yuanmou town → Wumao earth forest in the morning → lunch in town → head to Langbapu around 3 PM to catch the stunning sunset. 📃 In-depth photography: Stay at nearby guesthouses to capture sunrise, sunset, and starry skies.

Yi Ethnic Signature Dish: Yi-style Lamb Soup Hot Pot! The clear broth lamb retains its original flavor, fresh and not gamey, perfect for warming up in autumn and winter, suitable for all seasons; Wuding Zhuang chicken has firm and fragrant meat, making for a nourishing and delicious soup; Tuotuo meat is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, incredibly satisfying to eat. 2. Seasonal Delicacy: Wild Mushroom Hot Pot (June-October) A top choice in Chuxiong! Chicken mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, and green-headed mushrooms are cooked together in one pot, the broth is incredibly flavorful, a seasonal feast that you must try when visiting Yunnan. During the non-sterile season, you can choose local chicken hot pot, which is equally authentic. 3. Authentic Local Snacks: Yuanmou cold chicken rice noodles and cold rice rolls are refreshing and appetizing; pine needle roasted tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a spicy and flavorful dipping sauce; buckwheat cakes dipped in honey are sweet and unique; Mouding fermented bean curd is a perfect accompaniment to rice, with a unique flavor. 4. Home-Style Cuisine: Lufeng salt-braised chicken and Yi ethnic eight-bowl feasts are made with simple ingredients and have a rich flavor, making them authentic Yunnan cuisine often served at local banquets. Tips: Chuxiong cuisine tends to be fresh, fragrant, and slightly spicy. If you don't eat spicy food, please inform the restaurant in advance; be cautious about long street banquets in scenic areas, as they are overpriced and the taste is generally mediocre. Authentic Yi cuisine can be found in old shops in residential areas of the city. ❌Super Comprehensive Guide to Avoiding Pitfalls | Hard-Earned Experiences, Don't Fall into These Trap! 1. Huge Pitfalls in Ancient Town Tourism 1. Reject Low-Priced Long Street Banquets on the Roadside! 1. **Low-priced Yi ethnic banquets sold at the entrance of the ancient town:** Most dishes are perfunctory, the ingredients are not fresh, and the seating is cramped. It's a purely tourist-driven experience with extremely low value for money. 2. **Avoid scams when taking photos in Yi ethnic costumes:** Street vendors offering photoshoots and clothing rentals often have hidden tricks. They'll charge extra for accessories and lighting later on. Prioritize shops with clearly marked prices; a full set of photos for around 30 yuan with no time limit is the most reliable. 3. **Fortune telling and blessing services in the ancient town:** These are all scams. They offer free fortune telling but then force you to pay a donation. Just ignore them. 4. **The ancient town is quiet during the day; don't rush there early. Focus on nighttime exploration; the night view and bonfire are the highlights.** 2. **Deadly pitfalls to avoid when eating wild mushrooms (crucial)** 1. **Never pick and eat wild mushrooms yourself!** Wild mushrooms found by the roadside, in the mountains, and in scenic areas often contain many highly poisonous species. Accidental ingestion can be fatal. Don't take the risk. 2. When eating wild mushrooms, always choose reputable, established restaurants and ensure they are fully cooked. Avoid eating raw or undercooked mushrooms, and refrain from drinking alcohol afterward to prevent poisoning. 3. Be cautious about eating cheap, loose mushrooms sold on the street; their quality is unknown, they may not be properly cleaned, and they can easily cause stomach upset. 3. Avoiding Scams When Traveling to Tourist Attractions 1. Yuanmou Earth Forest is far from the city center. Avoid taking unlicensed taxis or cheap shared rides, as they are likely to overcharge or abandon you halfway through the trip. Prioritize reputable ride-hailing services and direct shuttle buses to the scenic area, and confirm a fixed price before departure. 2. The Earth Forest is exposed to intense midday sun with no shade, so avoid traveling during this time and take precautions against sunburn. Do not climb over the guardrails in the ravines of the Earth Forest, as landslides and slippery conditions are common; safety is paramount. 3. The State Museum requires advance booking and is closed on Mondays; avoid making a wasted trip. Do not buy cheap tickets from scalpers at Dinosaur Valley, as they are unreliable and may expire. 4. Zixi Mountain has many mosquitoes in the forest; bring mosquito repellent. The mountain roads have many curves, so drive slowly. 4. Food and Drink Pitfalls 1. Don't trust taxi or tricycle drivers' recommendations for mushroom hotpot or Yi ethnic cuisine restaurants. They all receive kickbacks, resulting in overpriced and inauthentic food. 2. Snacks in ancient towns and scenic areas are overpriced. Try them casually; for authentic mutton soup or wild mushrooms, go directly to established restaurants in Chuxiong city. 3. Most roadside vendors claiming to sell "wild local products from the deep mountains" or "precious mushrooms" are actually selling artificially cultivated products at inflated prices. Be cautious when buying. 5. Transportation Tips 1. Chuxiong's attractions are spread across a wide area: the ancient towns in the city, Zixi Mountain, Yuanmou, and Lufeng are scattered across different regions. Don't try to visit multiple attractions in one day; the journey is time-consuming and the experience is poor. 2. Unlicensed taxis are rampant at the high-speed rail and train stations, charging exorbitant prices. For short distances, prioritize public transportation and ride-hailing services; refuse to accept unlicensed taxis soliciting passengers. 6. Avoiding Betrayals When Choosing Accommodation 1. Best choice for beginners: Lucheng area in Chuxiong city, or the area around the Yi Ancient Town! Convenient for dining, night markets, and transportation, with well-developed amenities. 2. Avoid staying in remote towns or farmhouses near the Earth Forest Scenic Area. Facilities are basic, hygiene is poor, and transportation is inconvenient. 3. Be wary of cheap, trendy guesthouses. Some are damp, dark, and poorly soundproofed, and prone to mold during the rainy season. Prioritize reputable hotels. 7. Avoiding Betrayals When Shopping for Local Products 1. Yi embroidery pendants, handmade silver jewelry, and wood carvings sold in scenic areas are often overpriced and poorly made; not recommended. 2. For souvenirs like Mouding fermented bean curd and buckwheat products, go directly to large local supermarkets for affordable, authentic, and straightforward deals. 8. Weather and Clothing Tips 1. Chuxiong has a large temperature difference between day and night. Even in summer, it's cool in the mornings and evenings, so bring a light jacket. The UV radiation is extremely strong, so sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential. 2. Mountainous areas are prone to rain and unpredictable weather; carry an umbrella. For hiking in earthen forests and mountain forests, wear non-slip sports shoes; avoid sandals and high heels. 3. Mountain roads are wet and slippery during the rainy season; pay attention to road conditions and avoid taking long detours to see undeveloped scenery. 🌟Core Itinerary (Optimal 3 days 2 nights, not rushed or tiring) Day 1: Yi Ancient Town Route | Ancient Town Night View, Cultural Relics, Immersive Yi Ethnic Customs Chuxiong Prefecture Museum: A free treasure museum, a must-visit first stop in Chuxiong! Pear blossoms like snow, spring tea fragrant — traveler post in Mouding

Pear blossoms like snow, spring tea fragrant

📍March in Mouding is a poem gently wrapped in pear blossoms and tea fragrance. 🌸At Fengtun Sama Ranch, tens of thousands of pear blossoms are in full bloom, covering the hills and fields like frost and snow. The pure white petals adorn the branches, creating a picturesque scene against the blue sky and green mountains. When the wind blows, petals fall like rain, lightly touching your clothes, filling the air with a fresh fragrance. Every snapshot captures a cool yet healing beauty. 👣Stroll along the flower paths, watch bees and butterflies circle the branches, listen to the wind brushing the flower shadows, and time seems to slow down. ⛰Turn and step into Gongfeng Tea Garden, where layers of fresh green stretch as far as the eye can see. Rows of tea trees sprout tender new buds, carrying the moist freshness of mountain clouds and mist. 🌿Carry a bamboo basket, gently pinch the youngest bud and leaf with your fingertips, and the tea aroma mixed with the scent of earth fills the air. Immerse yourself in the joy of tea picking, with every moment capturing the vitality and life of spring. 🌃Return in the evening and stay at Fanyin Xishe in the Yi Ancient Town, a peaceful retreat amid the bustle. The courtyard’s flowing water and full Zen atmosphere help you unwind from the day’s fatigue. Fall asleep with the breeze, bringing a gentle end to your spring journey.

The Heijing Ancient Town Highway Opens

At 10:00 on December 26, 2025, the millennium-old salt capital Heijing Ancient Town, located in the Longchuanjiang Gorge in central Yunnan, will witness a historic moment—the official opening of the Muyuan Expressway, marking Heijing's first inclusion in the national expressway network. The main line of the Muyuan Expressway is 48.56 kilometers long, starting from Daditou in Jiangpo Town, Mouding County, connecting to the Xinchuda Expressway, and ending at Boheng Village, Laocheng Township, Yuanmou County. It seamlessly connects to the G5 Jingkun Expressway and is a core part of Yunnan Province's "Eleven Links" road network plan. The entire route features 29 bridges and 10 tunnels, with a bridge and tunnel ratio as high as 77.2%, along with supporting service areas, parking zones, and six interchanges. The Heijing section is about 15 kilometers long, including key projects such as the Heijing Tunnel and Awat Bridge. This road embodies wisdom and hope, overcoming challenges like fractured surrounding rock and railway underpasses during construction. Local residents gave up land, and road workers sweated to turn a natural barrier into a thoroughfare. Heijing has a long salt history; Yi ancestors discovered brine springs in the late Neolithic period, and during the Nanzhao era, salt was exclusively supplied to the royal family. Visitors can drive on this new expressway to experience the vicissitudes of the millennium-old salt capital and enjoy the convenience brought by improved transportation. Come to Heijing Ancient Town and embark on a journey through time!

Check in at Tiantai Peak for Buddha's Light

Today, let's climb the secret "Little Emei" of central Yunnan — Mu Ding Hua Fo Mountain! 📍Located in the northwest of Mouding County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, just 12 kilometers from the county seat, with an elevation of 2,493 meters, it is a Buddhist sacred mountain and ecological treasure nurtured by the Ailao Mountain range. Here, there is no noisy incense, but a thousand years of Zen: the mountain shape layers like lotus petals, the main peak "Tiantai Peak" is often shrouded in clouds and mist, and you can see the "Buddha's Light illusion" in the morning; ancient temples are built along the mountain — Longquan Temple on Hua Fo Mountain, founded in the Tang Dynasty and flourishing in the Ming Dynasty, is hidden among green pines and cypresses, with temple bells hanging from the eaves ringing clearly in the wind; even more remarkable is the symphony of geology and life: the mountainside is full of volcanic karst caves (such as "Guanyin Cave" and "Arhat Cave"), with stalactites hanging like lotus flowers inside; ancient trees tower in the forest, Yunnan cherry blossoms, wild rhododendrons, and alpine dove trees bloom in succession, painting the mountain pink and white in spring and golden red in autumn; at the foot of the mountain, the Longchuan River tributary winds clearly, reflecting the peaks, called "Hua Fo Mirror Lake" by locals. Colorful Sand Forest: Nature's Masterpiece — traveler post in Mouding

Colorful Sand Forest: Nature's Masterpiece

The "Colorful Sand Forest" is a natural wonder located in Xujie Township, Mouding County, Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan Province. On February 17, 2025, a sunny day, we visited this free (still under development) attraction. Approaching this natural landscape, we were greeted by towering sand peaks standing in a pool of yellow water (containing a lot of sediment) (photos 2, 3). Walking along the path into this natural wonder, we all felt like we had entered a fairyland— With every step (or rather, every turn), the scenery changed: the surrounding sand pillars were majestic, the sand screens were picturesque, and the sandy beaches stretched endlessly. They were all connected, weaving together vivid three-dimensional paintings: some clusters of sand mounds resembled the ruins of a lost city, some sand pillars looked like pagodas, some sand dunes resembled beaded curtains, and many sand pillars looked like upright tree trunks... Nature's craftsmanship has carved the mounds and pillars in the sand forest into various strange and unique shapes— Look, this sand pillar looks like a camel! See, that sand mound resembles a screen! Ah, this sand pillar is a snake's head... In this wonderful natural world, we all felt rejuvenated and enchanted, lingering in the sand-made fairy tale world! It is said that this sand forest changes color with different lighting, time, and seasons. However, due to our limited visit time, we did not experience the "colorful" aspect of the sand forest.
