Italy Train Travel FAQs

How much does a Trenitalia train ticket cost?

There are three main fare types on Trenitalia's Intercity and high-speed services (Frecce: Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca): Super Economy, Economy and Base (in ascending order of price and flexibility).

For the best fares, we recommend booking in advance, as the cheapest tickets are only available in limited numbers and prices can rise significantly once they sell out.

Regional trains on the other hand operate on a fixed fare basis depending on the distance of the route and do not change the closer it comes to departure.

How much does an Italo train ticket cost?

In ascending order of price and flexibility, Italo offers three train ticket types: Low Cost, Economy and Flex. Low Cost fares offer no refunds and only very limited changes, while Flex fares guarantee maximum flexibility, with free ticket changes and refunds for only a small fee.

How far in advance can I buy train tickets in Italy?

Trenitalia: Long-distance train tickets (Frecce and Intercity) are generally available up to 6 months prior to departure.
Italo: Train tickets are available to book 4-6 months in advance.
Please note: Every year on the second Sunday of June and December, Italy’s national rail timetable changes. Around these dates, the advance booking window for both Trenitalia and Italo may be temporarily reduced.

When can I buy the cheapest train tickets in Italy?

For high-speed trains such as Frecciarossa and Italo, the earlier you book, the cheaper the fare.
But even when purchasing closer to departure, you can still benefit from Trenitalia's FrecciaDAYS fares, unlocking savings of up to 60% when travelling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
You can also take advantage of Trenitalia's dynamic pricing system, which offers significantly lower fares on quieter days and during off-peak hours.

How does Trenitalia's 2-for-1 offer work?

With Trenitalia's Freccia 2-for-1 offer, two people travelling together pay the price of just one Base fare ticket. Simply purchase your tickets by midnight, at least three days prior to departure. Please note that tickets are non-refundable and cannot be amended.

Need a little more flexibility? Just add the tiRimborso option before checkout – this allows you to cancel your journey and recover the total ticket cost (minus a 10% fee) up to midnight two days before departure.
