Holiday Inn Chester - South

The expression 'it is what it is' is oft used these days and seems made for Holiday Inns, Travelodges, Premier Inns etc. The general gist being, you get what you pay for; don't stay in a budget hotel and expect premium. To be honest, the hotel was absolutely fine. Yes it's a bit rough around the edges and the rooms were old and worn, however it's location is very good and the breakfast was surprisingly enjoyable. I probably wouldn't have bothered writing a review were it not for the pool. This was actually one of the main reason we booked the hotel; it was one night away with the kids and the bonus of having a pool always keeps them happy. The warning signs were there in the changing rooms which looked iffy but when you dip your toe in the pool and it's a pleasurable warm, you dismiss the worries. That is until you ease yourself into the pool, look into the water and realise the deep blue colour is actually caused by the amount of dirt floating in the pool. I raised my hand out of the water at one point to wave at my family and had several strands of hair (not my own) hanging off it. Have you seen the remake of National Lampoons Vacation when they accidentally go swimming in a cesspool. Ok ok I'm exaggerating but you get the point. I don't know whether the filter wasn't working properly - I know nothing about pool maintenance - but in my experience I feel it shouldn't be difficult to make pool water cleaner than that. As we all agreed, I could have handled swimming in cleaner colder water so Holiday Inn please turn down the temperature and what money you save, spend it on cleaning up the pool.

Stayed for two nights, great place to stay with convenient train travel to get to the Grand National. Whilst staying we had an evening meal and drinks, great selection on menu, food was tasty and great value. staff were excellent, cheerful and attentive. We had a family room, myself, husband and daughter. The room was spotless, clean bathroom, great shower, nice fluffy clean white towels. We all slept well, comfy beds and the bedding was spotlessly clean and smelt fresh! The quality of produce for the breakfast was outstanding, you don’t very often get this at a hotel, quality of a farm shop breakfast, again great choice, super service and delicious food. We stay in a lots of hotels/ B&B’s and for the price, this place is outstanding! Looking forward to booking and staying again next year. Thank You 😊

I booked this hotel for a one night stay on my way back to London for a night of rest and relaxation before starting a new job on Monday. Sadly rest and relaxation were not achieved as I had the worst night's sleep ever and left more tired than when I arrived. The room itself, Bay, was small and rather depressing, very small bed (lucky I came solo) and looking out onto a flat roof, no view, strewn with an old plastic lemonade bottle and bits of debris. When I turned out the light to go to sleep at 11pm, all I could see was the incessant neon green flashing of the smoke alarm directly above the bed. I had to sleep turned to the wall with the pillow half over my head to block it out. I booked breakfast for 9.30am desperate for a lie in but woke at 6.34am to the sound of loud chatter from the room next door which sounded like it was in my own room, this was not muffled sound but loud enough to wake me and I could hear every word. I could then hear the deafening noise of their bathroom, pipes, teeth brushing, banging around, closely followed by a mechanical beeping noise from below (kitchen perhaps? Dishwasher?) At which point I screwed up tissue paper to put in my ears to try and act as earplugs in the hope I could get a bit more sleep but it was too late. Defeated I went down early for breakfast and spoke to the receptionist. She tried to get the manager who was in a meeting and would be ”another ten minutes” so I said I would go for breakfast and come back. Breakfast was average, watery coffee, one choice of hot meal, which arrived about a minute and a half after ordering, not freshly cooked but OK. Strange that the menu said ”smoked rindless bacon” but bacon had a thick rind and did not taste smoked. I asked for brown sauce which took longer to arrive than the hot food itself and was placed without a word or a smile by a depressed looking teenage girl. On returning to the desk 25 minutes later I was told the manager was still busy but would email me later today. At this point a huge wedding party arrived with suitcases stacked all over reception and a bridal party getting ready and pinning dresses in the corridor directly in front of the lift causing a blockade. Why they weren't given a room to prepare in I have no idea. Considering my experience as a guest, I dread to think what their day held for them. So utterly disappointing considering the beautiful building and garden but this is a definite case of all fur coat, no knickers.

Wall Hill Farm

We needed a place to stay in order to attend a colleague’s 50th Birthday Bash in Northwich. The location is quiet and rural with plenty of parking spaces and a well maintained exterior. Comms were excellent and instructions were clear. The accommodation varies by room with each having its own character and theme. Ours was ‘classic’ and was comfortable, clean and cordial. Of particular note was the shower! Wonderfully simple, controllable and powerful. Breakfast was plentiful, freshly made and personally served in a lovely, ‘solid’ farmhouse style dining room which has a cozy communal lounge off to one side where one can sit and relax outwith the bedrooms. The remote for the TV didn’t work, but this was fixed immediately with a smile. Cleaning staff friendly and approachable and nothing seemed like too much trouble. The overnight temperature during our stay was an unseasonal 25°! Very warm for September. Thankfully the windows opened widely and the quiet idyll of the Cheshire countryside didn’t intrude. We stayed three nights and really enjoyed this wee gem. Good value and high quality aren’t always found together. But they are at Wall Hill!
The Pheasant Inn

As a party of 2 couples we had visited separately and this was our first time together. Our rooms were fabulous, both in the converted barn. Not the biggest of rooms, however they absolutely had everything you could need and were exceptionally comfortable with amazing views over the Cheshire plain, Liverpool in full view. We ate in the restaurant in the evening which was absolutely packed and deservedly so, the food was fabulous. Between us we had: soup, garlic ciabatta, bruschetta and cod fish cake, all of which were delicious. We all chose fillet steak for our main course, we all commented that it was one of the best we had had, succulent and perfectly cooked, served with great chips, tomato and mushroom - delicious. After a super rested nights sleep, we tucked in to yet more food. Our breakfast was again delicious, a decent continental selection, followed by good hot choices: omelette, poached eggs with avocado on sourdough, full English and crumpets with smoked salmon and poached eggs. If that wasn’t going to set us up for the day then nothing would. From start to finish the service was great, one waiter was a little grumpy in the morning, however I think I would be a little jaded following all the covers the previous evening. We had a fabulous stay, everything was so good. We are local and are already looking forward to the next excuse to treat ourselves.
Carden Park Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa

The Spa is a must visit if you stay here. Special mention to Harvey, Amanda & Nire in providing first class service in a very friendly way. Nothing seemed too much bother for any of this Hotel’s staff. We asked The Concierge, Grieg where the golf clubhouse was and he took us there in a buggy and gave us a guided tour. He is another credit to this hotel. Every member of staff we encountered were helpful & friendly. We will definitely return soon.
