Estalagem do Mar

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights during our 2 week visit of Madeira. Our stay was disappointing especially compared to the other places we stayed in Funchal and Porto Moniz (same price). No wonder they ask you to pay in advance. Our checkin was very cold. The breakfast was average. Every day the exact same choices. No fresh bread but stale buns. It must have been a top class hotel 20 years ago but seems to live on old glory. There is a beautiful lobby, but the atmosphere is cold. Most of the personel does not seem to be happy to work there. Only a few managed to bring up a smile when we asked for a service. I can imagine why as they must be getting auite some complaints about the infrastructure. The pool was ice cold. The restaurant was closed and there is only 1 other restaurant at walking distance. Fortunately we had a car. Whilst I appreciate the traditional rooms, the bathroom facilities are really poor. There was mould around the bath tub and our toilet kept running. We mentioned this on the first night and had to wait 2 days for it to get fixed and to have the problem again the last night. The hotel has so much potential, so it’s really sad to see it perish

Visited on a Saga holiday and were very impressed. Room was large and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and could not do enough for you. Food in the restaurant was excellent. The only downside was that it was quite remote; however if you want a relaxing holiday it would be hard to beat, or if you have transport it makes a wonderful base to explore the north of the island. We will certainly revisit
