My Wife and I stayed for one night in July as a spa package 'deal' which all in all cost over £500. As I write that I feel slightly uneasy... was it really that much? My bank balance confirms it and I wish the money had been better spent elsewhere. £365 for a standard room, two 25 minute spa treatments each, access to the spa facilities, £50 voucher towards dinner and breakfast in the morning. The hotel itself has a certain amount on grandeur due to its age, but this is only reflected in the communal areas. We then payed £50 for a superior 4 poster bedroom upgrade at reception as this was a 'special deal" What a disappointment. Rickety old bed, on the main road, very tired decor, bathroom panels falling apart and only a tiny bath with a shower on the wall. No walk in shower or anything luxurious. A real disappointment and felt scammed after looking at photos of standard rooms. Dinner in the evening was good in regards to the food. Decent options and tasty but oh my word overpriced in some cases. Over £40 for a small sirloin steak?! We went for Steak but one of the cheaper options and to its credit, it was a good cut, even if the waitress had the come and take our order 3 times to confirm how we would like it cooked. Seemed to be a consistent theme as the table opposite was a large group and were sending food back every 5 minutes after it had been served. We had a starter, dessert and a couple of drinks each and the bill came to £130 so nearly £200 on food with the vouchers. Bob Bob Ricard or Ivy Asia kind of money for half the service and quality. The Spa was gladfully much better. Could use a refresh as there were some tiles missing in places etc but nothing to really complain about. Spa treatments were really lovely and we both came away feeling refreshed and relaxed. Breakfast wasn't great. A buffet style which was disappointing considering the style of the hotel. We had hoped for a served breakfast but no...watery scrambled eggs and undercooked bacon it was. We're really not ones to moan. We enjoy breaks away as having two small children, the opportunity to do so doesn't come around very often so when we do and especially pay this much money for a one night stay, we expect a standard of quality to be better than what we received. When mentioned at checking out (discreetly I will add because I didn't want to embarrass staff or make a scene, I was met with a rude eye roll and almost shrug of the shoulders and told that the room service would be for free. Thanks....some free onion rings and bottled still water for my disappointment. Says it all really. Wouldn't stay again and would just give a word of warning to future travellers in regards to expectations when staying here for the price you pay.
