Coylumbridge Hotel

When we first arrived at the hotel we were greeted warmly and given checked in fairly quickly. I had chosen a “cosy double room” didn’t realise quite how cosy this room would be. The bed was smaller than a regular double bed and the bathroom was pretty small too. There was plenty of parking in front and behind the main hotel building. Our room was in the courtyard which was separate from the main hotel building. The courtyard is not well signposted and we were quite confused trying to find our room initially, we had to ask a cleaner for directions. Other than being small the room itself was fine. The bed was fairly comfy and there were spare pillows in the small cupboard. The room had tea/ coffee making facilities and a tv with multiple channels. The walls were pretty thin so we could hear everything the people next to us were saying so bare that in mind. The bathroom appeared clean at first but upon further inspection the shower had spilled soap/ shampoo on the floor from the previous people that stayed there. Next to the hotel is the woodshed. The Woodshed was cosy, clean and served a variety of different snacks and drinks. Amy who works there was very friendly and welcoming and showed good knowledge of the surrounding areas. It also had popular music playing and a pool table. Dogs were welcome in this area. There was a real fireplace in here however this wasn’t lit when we visited.

A lovely setting among trees & very clean room. Has tea kettle. No wash cloths. Needs rubber mat in shower. Bed was comfortable.. Food - had a nice dinner that was as organized as possible for a crowd. Breakfast- was very good. Especially Enjoyed porridge, yogurt, fruit & eggs. was happy to see the liver type of brood coffee. It was efficient and tasty. T he birds are so wonderful I can hear them inside the room..

On arrival we checked in and were informed that the lift was out of order and that we were on the 3rd floor, we were not informed before we arrived of the issue and it had been out of order for at least 2 weeks, no offer of another room on a lower floor or offer of a refund. Went up to the room and for a 4* hotel we were not impressed, very bland, dated and boring not to mention the dead flies on the carpet, huge spider on window, live flies flying about tried to open window to let it out and the wouldn't open, chips and cracks on walls, wardrobe door kept coming off rails, 2 tv's in room and neither of them worked. Extreme lack of UK sockets in the bedroom and for a suite I would have thought there would have been a dressing table with a mirror. Breakfast on the first morning was lukewarm, also maybe staff should be speaking to parents when their children are running around while people are trying to eat breakfast and their parents let them go over to the hot area and handle food with their hands and put it back in the containers where others had to select their food from. The lack of elevator took its toll on Saturday and I was bedded with a flare up of sciatica for the rest of the day. Went to check out on Sunday and as we were going down the stairs with our luggage a cleaner was throwing bedding down the gap in the stairs narrowly missing us. I would have had a better stay at Fawlty Towers.
Macdonald Highlands Hotel

We recently stayed at the Macdonald Highland Hotel for two nights (checking in on Fri-30-Aug and checking out on Sun-01-Sept; room 2202 a “deluxe double” room). This trip was a special occasion for us as we were enjoying some quality time as a family of three before welcoming our second child — I’m currently 8 months pregnant. When booking, I mentioned my pregnancy and requested a “popular” room to contribute in making this special. (Despite the resort being like a ghost town, the room we were in was not just basic but subpar). While we rate it 10/10 for children with the array of facilities offered (and is the only reason we hope to return next year), I must express our disappointment with the quality of sleep we experienced during our stay. Being 8 months pregnant, sleep is already challenging, and unfortunately, the bed in our room was atrocious. The mattress was severely sunken in the centre, which exacerbated my existing pelvic girdle pain and left me in significant discomfort. The mattress was too hard, the sheets were torn and it has to be said, it was sadly the most uncomfortable bed I’ve slept in. As a result, I only managed about 4 hours of sleep the entire stay, and on the second night, my partner even ended up sleeping on the floor. Certainly not worth the £408 we paid for our stay — we expected much better. The general feel of the place is tired and in need of refreshing - particularly the rooms. There was mould around the bath / shower, the TV is Freeview with no channel guide and the sound wasn’t working on half of them … Not that we go to hotel’s to watch TV however, it’s nice to put on while family are getting ready / in the evening. I would have shared this feedback upon check-out, but since we were not asked about our experience, I felt it more appropriate to communicate this via a review. On a positive note, our daughter, despite a disturbed sleep the second night, had an enjoyable time. Like I said, the facilities for children were fabulous. We hope that if we return next year, we’ll be able to enjoy a more restful stay!
